A Bird’s Eye View Of Rotterdam From Atop The Euromast
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday is Euromast in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
In one of my previous travel tales, I’d mentioned about my failed first attempt to get atop this tower because of torrential rains in the city. Luckily, and because I’m not one to back down on my itinerary so easily, I smartly chose a sunny day for my second visit, and got my wish to view this city from the tallest tower in town, fulfilled. Though the view was everything I’d wished and hoped for, I wasn’t prepared for the strong gusts of wind at that height. So, the sight was definitely breathtaking, but moving around the periphery of the viewing board, made me scared of getting blown away by the wind and breathing my last (get the joke?).
I captured this photo from top of the tower, where you can see the shadow of Euromast falling on the green trees and grass of the adjacent Het Park. You can also see the famous Rotterdam skyline with the landmark structure of the city, The Erasmus Bridge in clear view.
Unfortunately, because of the windy weather, the Euroscoop, a panoramic glass elevator, which rotates till 185 meters, was shut. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the bird-eye view of this architecturally rich city from the tallest open tower in the Dutch country. If in Netherlands and in Rotterdam, don’t miss this chance to experience the city from a height of 100 meters! At a minimal rate, the platforms at Euromast are accessible for everyone who is not afraid of heights (or of strong winds

Of Panoramic Views and an Unplanned Monsoon Trek At Cabo De Rama
In focus for today’s #TravelTuesday is the Fortress Cabo de Rama in Goa, India.
(place in above video: the broken down staircase which take you to the spot offering a panoramic view from Cabo De Rama Fort)
This was my second trip to Goa (as an adult; as a toddler too I had been there once but the only recollections are from the photos) and in my first trip, the only Fort I got a chance to visit was Chapora and that had been a memorable as well as scenic experience.
(place in above photograph: Chapora Fort)
Hence, when the view from atop Cabo de Rama first came in sight, I was pleasantly surprised that there was another Fort with an even better view!
(place in above photograph: Panoramic view from Cabo De Rama Fort)
There are two tips to the Fortress, where one takes you to the top, whereas from the other end, you can climb down (slippery and broken down stairs) to the sea coast.
(place in above photograph: other side of Cabo De Rama Fort which takes you the sea coast)
As there was high tide (which you can obviously make out from the pic) and rains, exploring both sides of the Fortress, turned out to be a monsoon trek and quite exciting!

(place in above photograph: Panoramic view from Cabo De Rama Fort)

The above two photos (with my husband in them) were taken from the side which offers the top view and I captured them before getting down to go to the other side.
If in Goa, visit this one for an unhindered view of the sea, with clouds and green trees enveloping the water from the top and sides, respectively.
(place in above photograph: view from the broken down staircase at Cabo De Rama Fort which take you to the sea coast)

And if going during monsoon, your trekking itinerary will be sorted too. Also, Catholic devotees, note that inside the Fort, there is a church which is in excellent condition and is still used regularly for masses. The white church and the black fort provide a photographic picture of stark contrast. So, go pray here to get your blessings and to also enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the fort.

Standing atop the Fort provides majestic views of the entire length of Colva Beach, the Canacona stretch and a panoramic outlook of the surrounding areas.

Savitribai Phule: Know About The First Female Teacher Of India
Savitribai Phule is not an unknown name for most Indians. For women, she is no less than a pioneering force that led to revolutionary changes. The first female teacher of India, Savitribai Phule surely did not reach there without any impediments or hurdles on the way. We know her name and her many achievements, but we don’t know what her many other contributions or how and why she did it all. With education and women’s rights becoming increasingly popular and trending topics, knowing more about Savitribai Phule has become even more important.
So, today, let’s get to know the woman behind the name. Here’s some interesting trivia on the life and times of Savitribai Phule, who was more of an activist than most of us today!
1. Savitribai Phule, Victim and Survivor of Child Marriage
She was married off at the tender age of 9. Though her husband was one of her biggest supporters, it was this which made her vehemently oppose the evil practice of child marriage. Looking at the wasted lives of young widows who were victims of child marriage, also led to her to opposing the evil practice of Sati.

2. One Woman, Many Roles
Besides being a teacher and a social reformer, Savitribai Phule was also a philosopher and a poet. Her poetry focused on nature, education and the abolition of the caste system. Thus, she played many roles in just one lifetime. Here is a snippet from one of her poems.

3. Compassionate Woman
Other than fighting for the rights of women, Savitribai Phule also vouched for the rights of the untouchables and lower caste people in India. Such was her compassion that she opened up a well for the untouchables in her own house.

4. Women’s Protection and Rights activist
She always laid emphasis on the education of women. It was she who, along with her husband, opened the first school for girls in India. Together they went on to open 18 such schools. The miserable condition of pregnant rape victims was also observed by Savitribai Phule, and hence, yet again with her husband’s support, she opened a care center “Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha”
5. Believer of Love Marriage
Back in the days, when the caste system was deeply embedded in our culture and society, she promoted inter-caste marriages openly. She founded the Satyashodhak Samaj, along with her husband. Here, people could get married without a priest and without any sort of dowry being given or taken.

6. No-shave movement
She organized and led a strike against the barbers to discourage and stop the practice of shaving the heads of the widows which was a norm back in those days.

7. The Struggles
Fighting against the system and the society, at a time when India was still suppressed by the British and also its own rigid caste and superstitions, Savitribai Phule wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms. People used to dislike her movements so much that they threw dirt and mud on her whenever she used to go out to teach the girls. However, Savitribai wasn’t one to give up easily, and hence always carried an extra pair of clothes with her for such scenarios.

Capture and execution of Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj by Mughals …
8. Practicing What She Preached
She once stopped a pregnant woman from committing suicide by promising her that she would take care of her unborn child. Later, she and her husband adopted the son who was born to this lady. They named him Yashavant Rao. He grew up to become a doctor. Moreover, she believed so much in the importance of education and its equality that in order to encourage students to study and reduce the drop-out rate, she used to give stipends to children for attending school.

9. Contributions to Healthcare
Along with her adopted son, Yashwant, she opened a clinic to treat those people who were affected by the worldwide Third Pandemic of the bubonic plague when it started to spread in and around Pune in 1897.

10. After Death
Savitribai Phule passed away on March 10, 1897. To honor her lifeworks and contributions, the University of Pune was renamed as Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2015. Her unreleased poems were published posthumously in the form of two books, Kavya Phule (1934) and Bavan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar (1982), respectively. India Post released a stamp in honor of Savitribai Phule on March 10, 1998.

Wasn’t she an amazingly inspirational woman? If you like her story then the tale of Rukhmabaiwill also entice you too.

Living Inside A Box At The Cube House, Rotterdam
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday are one of the most unique living spaces I’ve ever come across, The Cube Houses at Rotterdam in Netherlands.
(place in above photograph: a view of the cube houses from the streets of Rotterdam)
During my first to the Netherlands, this was one of those attractions which was on top of my list and I ended up visiting them on my very first day in town. However, because of time constraints, I missed out on checking them out from the inside.
(place in above photograph: a view of the cube houses from the common space shared among the cube houses)
Oh yes! You can go see how these peculiar one-of-a-kind houses are from inside, because one of the houses has been turned into a museum of sorts and is accessible to public (the ticket costs just 2 Euros and the visiting hours are 10am to 6pm). Luckily, on my second visit, I got to explore this architectural wonder from within too!

What I was left marveling at most was how in such a small space, each corner has been effectively utilised to make space for everything essential, and there’s still no cramming up.

(place in above video: stairs leading from the first floor to the second floor which houses a bedroom, a washroom and a study area)

I chose a great time to visit too, because I went just before they were shutting it, and it was time for sunset too, so I got to see the setting sun from the top floor of the house, as the rays of the sun settled on the glass tops of each of the roofs of these clustered houses. It was a sight worth it all.

If in town, visit these for some architectural and home decor inspiration. And, for those wanting to explore even further, and wondering how living in such a space would be, there’s hostel here. Yep, you can stay at Stayokay Rotterdam to get the practical experience of life in such a space (I definitely intend to do so if I get another chance to visit this city)

Pro-tip: The Cube Houses are a walking distance from the Rotterdam Central Station. If you don’t want to do that, take the tram or metro to enjoy local transportation and attractions. Also, the De Markthal Rotterdam (another architectural attraction) is right opposite the cube houses, so you can cover that too!

Anasuya Sarabhai: Know about The First Female Labour Union Minister of India
Anasuya Sarabhai, a name we should know more about, but sadly we don’t. We know Mahatma Gandhi supported the works and thinking of a few women, who were always by his side. Anasuya Sarabhai was one of these women. Indian history is rich with the contributions of extraordinary women who have broken barriers and set an example for future generations. For instance, Savitribai Phule was one such woman. However, the stories of many of these women still remain in the dark. Anasuya Sarabhai was one such woman who dedicated her life and work for the betterment of the downtrodden and less fortunate.
She was affectionately called motaben meaning elder sister. Her words, and more so, her actions, even today, continue to inspire those who believe in a better and equal world for everyone. Let us now tell you the tale of Anasuya Sarabhai.

She was born in Ahmedabad in 1885. Though born into the affluent Sarabhai family, Anasuya Sarabhai was orphaned at the tender age of 9 when she lost both her parents.

Her paternal uncle took care of her and her two younger siblings after that. However, her uncle got her married unwillingly when she was 13. The unhappy marriage did not last long. Anasuya soon got divorced and returned to her own family. Her brother Ambalal Sarabhai, supported her in her desire to study further which she had earlier been denied by her uncle.

She completed her education in England and returned to India after having found her calling to serve the cause of social equality. It began in the form of a school which she opened for the poor children of all castes. She used to bathe and teach these children on her own. After this, she went on to open several creches and toilets for women, a maternity home and a hostel for harijan (untouchable) girls.
It was later, when she had an honest conversation with middle-class working women labourers, that she became an activist for the labour class of India. In 1914, when Ahmedabad was hit by a plague epidemic, upon the request of the labourers, Anasuya Sarabhai went on to demand fair wages from the mill owners. This wasn’t easy as it was her own brother, Ambalal, who was the then-president of the Mill Owners’ Association.
This was followed by a 21 one day strike following which the mill owners had to finally agree to the demands of the labourers. She played a pivotal role in the Kheda Satyagraha and the foundation for Gujarat’s oldest labour union, Majoor Mahajan Sangh (Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association or TLA). It was established on February 25, 1920.
In 1927, Anasuya also founded Kanyagruha, a school for the daughters of Ahmedabad’s textile workers and SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association of India).
Thus, Anasuya dedicated her entire life in the betterment of the less fortunate, even if it meant standing up and fighting against her own. We salute such an inspiring lady. What are your thoughts on the same? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments below.
