A Walk Through An Artist’s Muse
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday is Nuenen in Netherlands.
Are you an artist or a fan of art? Then you’ve surely heard of Van Gogh. If so, this place is your eye and mind candy. This little village, which you can explore on foot in about an hour max, is the place where Van Gogh painted most of his famous works.
A typical Dutch village by character, Nuenen has made a great effort in the last two years to show visitors from all over the world where the celebrated artist lived and worked in Nuenen and how he viewed the village whilst living there.
Walking around town has become highly informative and feels like walking into a real-life Van Gogh painting, as it were, as many of the landmarks shown in his pictures are still there today. A little walk around town will take you to all the 23 spots that were significant to the artist, 14 of which he painted or sketched. Some buildings that he painted are still there. You literally follow his footsteps looking up the 17 information columns. You can press the buttons on these columns to get an explanation (in English or Dutch) on why that particular spot was so important to Van Gogh and in which of his works this place was featured. How cool is that, right?
This picture I’ve taken is a spot which inspired the painting titled ‘Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen’.
A replica of the painting can be seen in front of the actual structure and inspiration, which stands as is, even today. If in Netherlands and around the city of Eindhoven, do visit this for some artistic inspiration and to get to know Van Gogh a little better.
Pro-tip : The village is well connected via the city buses from Eindhoven railway station but intercity connection to it may take longer to reach there. So, if travelling from outside Eindhoven, take the train and then the bus from Eindhoven station to reach faster.

A Natural Oasis In The Middle Of Urban Concrete
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday is Nirvana Park in Mumbai.
I had chanced upon a random photograph of this park while surfing the net. When I looked at the location, I was surprised to know that it existed right next door to my previous workplace. Visiting the park had been on my agenda from the moment I had seen its photo.
So, few days back, I just decided to go because I was not in the mood to work from home and I just couldn’t put off going here anymore. With greenery of tall and short trees, an arena of colourful flowers, a children’s play area, benches to sit on at various points in the park, a pond with a variety of fish swimming around happily and tree house type towers offering panaromic views of the entire park, this is just the eye-candy and break from the crowd that one would want.
In the thriving corporate and residential area of Powai, this is a piece of natural heaven that cannot be missed.
I spent almost two hours here, working, reading and most of the time just absorbing the wonderful views around me. If in Powai, you should not miss out on this green and colourful beauty. Don’t let the entrance make you think it’s just another garden, because that’s what kept me from discovering this gem of a place from so many years, despite it being right in my face.
Pro-tip: The time between 3-6 is a little crowded and you might find it difficult to get an empty bench to sit on. So go before lunch time if you can, and if you want to get a good spot from where you can enjoy all the beauty that the park has to offer.

What is Satta Matka And How Did It Start In India?
Satta Matka, as a term may be unknown to many. But if we say its gambling, we’ll immediately figure out what it is. In English, it is also referred to as Matka gambling. Gambling is an illegal activity in our country today, and the Satta Matka in its original form has ceased to exist. But we do play it in various forms like the Rajdhani Day, Main Mumbai Day, Kalyan Night, Kuber Morning, etc. In today’s scenario, the gamble is placed on numbers. The players involved in this business, bet their money on the number of their choice to win the game.
However, do we know anything about the Satta Matka as it existed? Very few know how it all began, what was the origin, who started it and why it became illegal. Would it not be interesting to find out? Let’s delve into it then!
The Satta Matka was actually started off as a lottery, which involved guessing and betting on the opening and closing rates of cotton which was transmitted from the New York Cotton Exchange. As surprising as that may be to few, it is true!

And, when did this start? In the pre-independent India, it was known as the Ankada Jugar. This was however changed and replaced in the 1960s. It improvised into versions such as pulling out slips from a large pottery pot which was known as a Matka or dealing playing cards. That’s how the practice came to be coined as ‘Satta Matka‘. Satta stands for gambling and matka means an earthen pot.

The original form of this game involved betting which would take place on the opening and closing rates of cotton as transmitted from the New York Cotton Exchange to the Bombay Cotton Exchange, via teleprinters.
But, who started it? Well, as to that we have three ‘Matka Kings‘ as they have or had been crowned then. These include:
Kalyanji Bhagat
Suresh Bhagat
Rattan Khatri
In the 1960s, Kalyanji Bhagat ran a grocery shop in Worli. He acted as the pioneer of the Satta Matka by accepting bets on the opening and closing rates of cotton traded through the New York wholesale market. It was he, who in 1962, started the Worli Matka. This was because, in 1961, the New York Cotton Exchange stopped the practice started off by Kalyanji.

Following the closure by New York Cotton Exchange, it was Rattan Khatri who came up with and introduced the idea of declaring the opening and closing rates of imaginary products. This was one of the many ingenious ways the punters came up with while looking for alternative ways to keep the matka business on.

It was also Ratan Khatri who started the practice of drawing out three cards to decide the day’s number. This betting was considered to be genuine by many as the said cards were opened in the presence of a patron. Another name to reckon with in the Satta Matka is Suresh Bhagat, who was also one of the leading players in the Indian gambling business. His death is believed to have been conspired by his own wife and son.
Though gambling may have become illegal, the likeness and addiction to it remain the same. Today, the Satta Matka has been infamously replaced by cricket betting and games like teen patti.

Satta Matki may have become illegal (or have got replaced), but it will always be remembered for the adrenaline rush it provided to the gamblers.
Note: We don’t endorse gambling in any form and practicing it is illegal. This article is purely for reporting purpose.

2. Walrus
The front teeth of the walrus are its distinguishing feature. However, it is this very body part that makes it one of the creepiest animal skeletons out there. The protruding shape of the skeleton would scare anyone.

Bird Watching And Nature Trial On A Sunday Morning
In focus for today’s Traveler Tuesday is the Gavier Lake in Surat, Gujarat.
Being born and raised in this diamond city, I never viewed it from a tourist or traveler’s point of view. Now that I’m settled in another city, the perspectives have changed because I’m an occasional visitor rather than a permanent dweller in the city. Hence, doing something offbeat when visiting Surat, is now always on my mind. So when my friends told me about a lake where we could watch a variety of birds in their natural habitat, I was game! We visited it on a Sunday morning, sometime around 10am. I was pleasantly surprised that such a beautiful place existed so close to the city and I was never aware about it. With viewing cameras placed at various points around the walking trail, you can observe the birds flocking or just lazing around on the lake’s water.
For nature lovers and bird gazing enthusiasts, this is a hidden paradise. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a walk around the lake while drowning oneself in the flora fauna and the wetland, this is just the kind of getaway you might be looking for.
Maintained by Nature Club Surat, the lake and its vicinity are quite clean. In fact, Nature Club also organises lake cleanup drives regularly and one of its major success stories was the clearing of the water hyacinths which were taking over this wetland. Surtis, and other visitors to the city who think there’s nothing to do and see in Surat besides food ravaging, add this to your list!
But, when you visit, please do ensure that you don’t pollute the area with trash, as the volunteers work hard to sustain its natural beauty.
Pro tip : It recommended to visit this place early morning for a beautiful view of the sunrise; unfortunately we missed out on that. Also, wear trekking/comfortable clothes with sports shoes as there is reasonable amount of walking involved.

It doesn’t even have a police station and the lone ATM in the village doesn’t have a CCTV either!

Nutan: Interesting Facts About The Legendary Actress Who Ruled Bollywood During The ’70s
Bollywood’s iconic actress Nutan Samarth Bahl aka Nutan is no longer amidst us, but her fans still remember as one of the best actresses of her era. Her journey in Bollywood is something you may be interesting in knowing about. Bollywood in the ’70s was unthinkable without Nutan. Pick any of the top ten movies between 1950 and early 1980s, and Nutan would surely have been the leading lady of at least two of those. What made Nutan the indisputable queen was her beauty and charm. But more than that it was her acting caliber.
The Padmi Shri awardee, Nutan, also holds the record for the most-awarded female actor (apart from Kajol, her own niece, who matched the record in 2011). Take that for women empowerment, ladies! Very few people know about her personal life and her personality off screen though. So, let’s get to know a bit of something we might not have known so far about Nutan.
There is no doubt that she had a huge fan-following and continues to rule the hearts of many yesteryear Bollywood fans. Look at how alluring she looked!

Apart from having a long career in Bollywod, Nutan also held a secretarial degree which she earned from Switzerland. It was here that she also learnt how to speak French. Despite having ruled the industry for more than three decades, she was quite humble. And, yes, a feminist too.
In her own words:
“I got a lot very early in life. I feel I have achieved everything in the right time, but I have managed to maintain it a little while longer than many. With actors or actresses, it’s a fade out or a fade over to another category in 15 years’ time. I was a leading lady for over 30 years and my transition was gradual and smooth. Yes, I do feel a sense of achievement. But the credit doesn’t go entirely to me. Luck had a big hand in it. I must admit I’ve had it easy, though.”
