Currently in the middle of reading Aja James' novel Pure Ecstasy, and I just wanted to give quick shout out the mastery that is Sofia in this book. Sofia was never a character I think we aren't meant to particularly care for, at least in beginning, a thing she often pointed out with knowing self derision.Come some. 10 fantastic, absolutely binge worthy, mouth watering reads or so later, and we see her coming around (not quite there yet) to who she was fabled to be.
Spoilers ahead!
In the story it TELLS us, she behaves like all three of her main Incarnation's. Because of that, I LOOKED to ensure that's the case. And boy did Aja deliver!
I could feel her righteous fury as Ninti, a slave liberator forced to see her people on the cusp of returning to chains. I can see the Persian Princess wrathful with the desire to see everything burn if it doesn't fit her expectations. And Sofia. The girl who wanted to know the answers. About her fate. About her entire race. But whose soul was not that of a warrior in this life.
Sofia who now has the soul of a warrior to find this answers.

For those familiar with Purslane's story, a little tease.
"I'm sorry." Earnest in her apology, Purslane licked her lips. "I wish I could give you want you need. All of you. Please tell me you understand."
The tension in Delavar's shoulders drew his muscles taught. "We both know you fight a losing battle. By drawing this out, you hurt my family, and you hurt me. So no, I don't understand." And with that, he left, slamming the door shut behind him.

There were a lot of things I truly enjoyed about this book. I would love to read more about these characters, and even wish the book were longer just so Cari could explore how they all fit together even more! Unfortunately, I wish the book was longer for another reason as well.
Condemned has a lot of intense situations - betrayal, fanaticism, the damage of war, that all build wonderfully to an apex that had me on the edge of my seat... and then tipped me over on my side. In the bad way. The betrayal got handled not by the betrayed, the fanaticism didn't pan out, and the huge battle did not happen. For all the build up it was disappointing. But, the story to get there was a quick fun read.
