Highly Sensitive Person or Highly Sensing Person?

In her book, Personal Boundaries for Highly Sensitive People, author and writing coach Grace Kerina says something really interesting about how she talks with her highly sensitive clients about sensitivity.
She says:
“Because the word sensitive has multiple associations, some of which are used as snubs (“You’re too sensitive”), I like to bring in the word sensing, which can have less charge for some people. We are highly sensing people. We sense the world with sensitivity.” ...

On Trusting & Following Our Intuition.

Should we always follow our intuition?
If you’re someone who knows and feels things, you know this is a tricky question.
You may have followed a feeling or intuition and rammed straight into a wall. But then, when you tried to just follow your mind and “be logical,” that didn’t work either. You later found that your first feelings and intuitions about people & things were spot on.
Our intuition is really valuable. It helps us sniff out things. At the same time, it can take...

What watching a bird has to do with being creative.
I put out a birdfeeder a year ago, and in this short space of a year, I have become a “bird person.” It’s not that I didn’t like birds earlier.
I talk about synchronistic encounters with hummingbirds in my book The Empath’s Journey. A few days ago, looking through my overextended bookshelves, I found a bunch of books I’d bought almost a decade ago on birdwatching.
But for a long time, I didn’t do much about it.
But something prompted me last year, and after a tiny Google...

How to Input Better if You’re a Magpie who Loves Collecting Shiny Things.
As a highly sensitive creative, you may love finding the metaphorical treasures on the roadside – odds & ends of information, interesting facts, exciting new materials to work with.
There is something thrilling about finding a shining gem after sifting through some rubble.
One of my favorite daydreams is that one day, I will find something that I can take on the Antiques Roadshow. Everyone else thinks it’s rubbish, but once it’s appraised, its value is discovered. For me, this is...

The Dynamics of being a Highly Sensitive High Sensation Seeker.
I have written before about how it is possible to have BOTH traits – to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) who is ALSO a high-sensation-seeker. A lot of creative people are like this. We have both these traits.
The push and pull between these two parts – the cautious, sensitive part and the explorative, high-sensation-seeking part is what creates the dynamic energy that helps us create new things. But sometimes these two parts can also feel like polar opposites, like two levers we ca...

Has everyone suddenly become a narcissist?
Has everyone suddenly become a narcissist? Over the last few years, this question has kept on coming up for me as the empath-narcissist conversation has grown online.
It is no doubt true that sensitives often get entangled with bullies.
Many times, we don’t even approach these people. Rather, these people come to us.
Even as a little kid, one of my first memories from primary school is of being bullied by a girl in my class. I had done nothing to incite her. I don’t remember ...
How hard is having hope?
In a video of between-takes, an audience member asks comic & The Daily Show correspondent Dulce Sloan about the biggest challenge she has had getting to where she is.
She says, Hope.
And continues: “People don’t talk about how hard hope is.”
Dulce Sloan always comes across as fun, sassy and really positive. And I think it bears underlining that just because someone is a positive person doesn’t mean that hope always comes easy to them.
Whether it’s working towards an “imp...
