“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

Great article. Breath of fresh air right now.

If we like free speech, we need to regulate big social media as a utility. The spectre of censorship creates a chilling effect many greater than what we see. This prevents us from getting to the truth, as a people.
We also need to reject postmodernism as a society. Universal truth exists. Reasoned debate has served advanced civilizations well. You’ve been to law school. Share the Socratic Method. Share the value of listening and learning — of honing a position through debate without ad hominem or suppression. Ours is now a culture of fear and insecurity.

I see your point.
I see your point. Government can be wasteful and inefficient. My point had more to do with the disconnect between regulating OTC/Rx medication pruduction and not regulating supplement pruduction. This tends to send the misleading message that supplements are different from meds — that they are not important/legitimate/powerful, do not have a purpose, and also aren’t dangerous.
Vitamin D isn’t necessarily the best example. One of the things I’ve learned with chronic migraine is that some supplements can be as effective as even the bext Rx meds.
One of them, called butterbur, can cut migraine days in half. This is better than some Rx preventatives (which can have unbelievable side effects). But the butterbur plant also has a series of chemical compounds called PAs that need to be filtered in preparation because they are hepatotoxic. This is expensive. Some companies reportedly cut corners, and it’s hard to know if you’re getting PAs until it’s too late. There is no FDA approval process for supplements whatsoever. So a lot of docs now don’t use butterbur.
I’m not a fan of extensive government regulation either, but I would like to be able to take butterbur and know that it is safe.

What is your Aim?
You can get a better price that that at Costco I think.
You can get a better price that that at Costco I think. The other thing to consider is branding. Supps aren’t regulated, so the best marker of quality is brand (better brands are pricier). We should probably change this policy.

Fantastic article, and very well-written.
Fantastic article, and very well-written. I had a similar experience with chelated magnesium. Mg2+is the most common deficiency, second only to Vitamin D. The two are synergistic & often supplemented together. Magnesium deficiency can lead to high BP, migraines (mine were far worse pre-supplements), insulin sensitivity, and even diabetes.

Wonderful posts. One of my favorites on Medium, I think. The first two are my favorites.

I understand.
I understand. I didn’t mean the tags to be disrespectful or condescending. I‘ve changed the “Life Lessons” one.
My point was to emphasize that discussion should focus on questions and issues—not personalities, parties, or labels. I’ve found that these aren’t particularly helpful. People stop reasoning when emotions get too involved. An easy way of divorcing emotion from position is to ask someone with an entrenched view for the opposing points. Many of them don’t understand them and won’t be able to answer coherently.
This is a well-written article, by the way. It was a good read.
