Automation will happen one way or the other.

Automation will happen one way or the other. And UBI is a concept we will need to explore (to encourage learning & innovation). But I agree with Jeremy below, insofar as we shouldn’t look to Communism. Capitalism done correctly (focused on innovation, personal growth, hierarchies of competence, and consumer value) is a better model. It will remain so.

I see three big problems to solve in the USA. Most relate to helping young people unlock their potential earlier rather than forcing them to chase a paycheck & pay off loans/mortgages/healthcare costs into their 30s:

(1) high-quality, cost-efficient, market-driven education that doesn’t result in exorbitant loans or degree inflation;

(2) increase housing supply 2–4x in urban centers;

(3) universal high-quality healthcare;

(4) regulation of social media as utilities to protect freedom of speech, to prevent chilling effects & groupthink, and to encourage new ideas.

Innovation is our comparative advantage. If enough people can learn the habits that lead to this at younger ages, without massive debt, with assured high-quality healthcare, with good places to live (w/ rejection of local red tape/NIMBY policies), we will be on the right track again.

When people can find and follow their passions earlier, they make real technological and intellectual contributions with the prevailing winds of the world, earlier in life. They won’t need to collect paychecks from megacorps to pay off monstrous student loans and mortgages.

America’s own economic system will adapt well to these changes, if we reject Washington stagnation and commit to change. There won’t be a lot of pushback on these changes from thoughtful Millennials and Gen z. But Boomers have a stranglehold on political power, and the media pushes groupthink and division. We need to emphasize free speech, reject postmodernism and “Cancel Culture,” and organize around good ideas.

The most efficient & effective Silicon Valley corporations should be our model — not the failed states of the past.

Doesn’t it though? Cancel Culture has just such a chilling effect on future speech.

This is the key.

This is the key. Finding the difference between objective truth and subjective truth — dissociating fact from self from position.

We could all stand to listen to each other and ask more questions.

Great article.
