Friday First Kiss #5 :: His Brother's Wife by Lily Graison-Historical Western Romance

I have a brand new feature here on the blog, Friday First Kisses. If you're anything like me, when I crack open a new book, I rush through the beginning, the budding relationship between the hero and heroine, and anticipate that spontaneous moment when they make their move. The First Kiss. The first turning point in every story.
I'll be sharing those moments here on the blog every Friday and I've invited a few other authors to share their character's first kisses as well. It will be a love-fest on the blog every week so lets get started!
This weeks Friday First Kiss is from my upcoming release, His Brother's Wife, a full length, stand alone novel, in the Willow Creek Series. This scene drops us right in the middle of a heated argument between our hero and heroine, Rafe and Grace, that ends differently than either expected.

“You can’t leave.”
Grace blinked her tears away and swallowed to dislodge the lump in her throat. “Why?”
“Because…” He stuttered, his mouth opening and closing several times. He looked as if he were about to say something then thought better of it before he shook his head. “You’ll break Jesse’s heart if you do.”
“As if you care about Jesse’s feelings,” she scoffed. “If you did, you’d treat him as he wished to be treated and not as a child who is underfoot all the time.”
“I do not.”
“You do!” Grace took a deep breath after yelling and tried to get her temper under control. “Rafe, you can not order that boy around. He told me on our way into town how he lived alone after your father died. He had no one to take care of him. Only himself. In his eyes, he’s a man, whether you or anyone else in this town sees it or not. Having you come in and boss him around is eating at what little pride he has left. Why can’t you see that?”
“Because he isn't a man, Grace. He’s a child, regardless of how you see him. He only survived as long as he did because Morgan Avery and his brother's made sure he was all right.”
“Fine. "It's obvious you'll not see him as anything but a child so why aren't you treating him like one? Why isn't he in school? Why is he here, doing your bidding instead of out playing with every other kid in town?”
“He told me he didn't want to go.”
“And you just accepted that answer and let him stay at home?”
Rafe growled and jerked his hat off, running a hand threw his hair before slamming the weathered leather back on his head. “What the hell was I supposed to do, Grace? The kid hated me the moment he clapped eyes on me. It took him three weeks before he’d even acknowledge I was in the house, another two before he uttered his first words to me, which, by the way, was to tell me to go to hell. I couldn't very well march in here and order him to school, now could I?”
“And what about now?”
“What about now?”
Grace tried to rein in her temper and lowered her voice. “He speaks to you now. Have you asked him what he wants?”
“If you haven’t noticed, every time I speak to him he lashes out. I avoid speaking to him at all if I can.”
“And how long do you expect to live that way? Until he is old enough to marry and leave?”
"Oh, so you're not marrying him, then?" he said, his words dripping with sarcasm.
"I've told you I'm not."
"So why are you still here? To torture me with your presence on a daily basis?
"Torture you?" Grace was shocked by his choice of words. He was being tortured? How so? She took a step closer to him and jabbed a finger into his chest. "If anyone is being tortured here, Rafe Samuels, its me. I'm the one cooking and cleaning for you with nothing in return other than a bed to sleep in. A simple thank you would suffice most days but you're too pig headed for even that." She gritted her teeth, raised her head to try to look him in the eye and shook her head is disgust when she failed. "I can't believe for a second I even harbored the notion of marrying you, but trust me when I say you'd be the last man in Montana I'd marry!"
The moment the words were out of her mouth, Grace froze. Rafe tilted his head a fraction, enough for her to see the fire in his eyes change so quick, she gulped in a breath of air moments before he reached for her, dragging her to him and kissing her like his life depended on it.
Her knees went weak, dizziness befalling her when he forced his tongue into her mouth. She moaned, reached up with both hands, placing them on his wide shoulders to steady herself and closed her eyes the moment her heart slammed against her ribcage.
It was the kind of kiss she'd always dreamed of. Forceful, full of passion and unrestrained need. His free arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him. The desire she’d seen in his eyes earlier wasn't the only place she noticed it. It was there on her thigh, hard and digging into her flesh.
She tilted her hips a fraction, rubbing herself against him and felt completely wanton as she did. He moaned, his hold on her tightening, and she wrapped her arms around his neck to draw him nearer.
His lips were firm and warm, his breath hot as it washed across her lips. Heat engulfed her body when his hand roamed down her back to her bottom. He cupped her flesh in his hand, pulled her tight against him, the hard length of him pressed more firmly against her leg.
He held her in a vise-like grip, his mouth hungry and demanding and for the first time in her life, Grace would have given herself to a man without a single regret. Her body ached in places she wasn't even aware could ache, her heart was pounding against her ribcage and no matter how close they were, it wasn't close enough.
She gasped and broke the kiss, dragging in lungs full of air as Rafe found the soft skin under her ear. His tongue lapped at the flesh of her neck and goose bumps pimpled her skin. Her breasts ached, her nipples hardening and begging for his touch. “Rafe.”
Grace was so caught up in the moment, she barely heard Jesse call her name. The sound of footsteps hitting the wooden steps at the back of the house caught her attention seconds before her name was carried to her on the breeze.
She gasped, pulled away from Rafe, and stared at him while trying to catch her breath. She scrambled to straighten her hair and turned, running the remaining distance to the house.

His Brother's Wife
by Lily Graison
A Willow Creek Novel
When Grace Kingston accepts a wedding proposal through a mail-order bride agency and travels across country to be married, she has no idea her bridegroom is a fourteen-year-old boy. There’s no way she can accept his offer but with depleted funds, and winter coming on, Grace has little choice but to stay. Things go from bad to worse when she meets Jesse’s older brother, Rafe. The attraction is immediate. He’s surly, rude and downright pig-headed but he makes her pulse race with a single glance.
Rafe Samuels thought to teach his brother a lesson by making him take responsibility for his rash behavior but one look at Grace and his plans go up in smoke. She isn't the dowdy spinster he imagined and having her live in his house and not be able to have her is the worst kind of torment. But putting her out of his mind is impossible.
As fall turns to winter, Grace finds that living with the two brothers isn't as simple a thing as she once thought. Jesse still thinks marriage is in the cards, and Rafe is a devilishly handsome distraction she doesn't need. She can’t decide if he hates her or wants to kiss her. And how does she avoid breaking Jess’s heart when it becomes clear that the attraction between her and Rafe is mutual?

Friday First Kiss #4 :: Terms of Surrender by Lorrie Farrelly

Welcome back to Friday First Kisses, where we take a small peek at the turning point in every romance... the First Kiss!
This weeks Friday First Kiss is from Terms of Surrender by Lorrie Farrelly.
![]()
Annie was both frightened and exhilarated. Michael’s hands urgently framed her face, then slowly gentled, sliding lower to caress her throat. He explored the curve of her neck with a sensuous stroke, finally thrusting his fingers deep into the soft, thick tresses of her hair. Still he couldn't stop the restless motion of his hands. He tugged Annie tightly against him and fairly devoured her lips with his. Her heart raced wildly and she could scarcely breathe.
When her lips parted slightly, he teased her with his tongue, then thrust deep, exploring the sweet, seductive taste of her mouth. Her hesitant surprise dissolved first into a glowing pleasure and then, so quickly it stunned her, into something else altogether more urgent and hungry. A deep craving flared as she instinctively understood all his kiss was asking of her, all the desperation with which he was taking her.
Michael wanted comfort, absolution, warmth. He wanted life. He wanted everything she could give.
Annie wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her body against him as a low moan escaped her throat.
Michael was jolted from the haze of his desire by that small, urgent sound. As Annie’s arms slipped around his neck, her fingers grasping his hair to urge him even closer, he was shocked to realize he was about one second away from laying her down on the porch and taking her right there. The softness and heat of her body, sweet and warm even under the layers of her clothing, pressed hard against him. His heart thundered in his chest.
Convulsively he pulled his hands from Annie’s hair and again held her face in his palms, drawing back slightly and gentling the passionate kiss, then breaking it. He leaned slightly against her, breathing hard, touching his lips tenderly to her forehead as he listened to her soft, rapid breathing.
In all his life, Michael had never felt so raw and exposed. He trembled from the power Annie held in her sweetness, strength, trust, and passion to shake him to the very core. The unexpected fire of her response had nearly undone not only his every ounce of physical resolve, but his heart and soul as well.
Southern tradition made much of flowery, maudlin sentiment, and Michael had always easily distinguished lust from romantic love. He knew from experience that one involved getting right down to scratching the itch, but the other, he surmised, involved a great deal of sighing and pining and God knew what else. What was happening to him now stunned him completely.
He’d known the first moment he’d ever touched her that he wanted Annie, and therefore he expected to have to keep holding an iron rein on his lust. He just hadn't expected to be shattered into such sharp need, tenderness, desire, vulnerability, and power all at once, then to be put back together with an awful lot of pieces in the wrong places.
“Annie,” he whispered hoarsely. “Annie, you’re so damn beautiful, so sweet...Aw, hell, sugar, if we don’t settle down here, I’m gonna come all undone and start teaching you things I got no right even thinking, much less doing.”
She looked up into his eyes, gone dark as a moonless night sky. She shook her head in gentle denial and reached up to tenderly trace his mouth. He shuddered and sucked in a breath, then gently closed his hand over hers, lacing their fingers. He pressed a kiss over each of her fingertips.
“Michael, I want...I never knew...”
He understood instantly what she was saying, and something very male inside him was foolishly, inordinately pleased, as well as gut-wrenchingly relieved he hadn't ravished her on the front porch after all.
“Annie.” He had so much inside of him to tell her that he couldn't even begin, but she heard the fullness of his emotion in the way he spoke her name.
She smiled a little giddily at him, then giggled. “When Andy Carlisle from out Arapahoe way kissed me last summer, I hit him.”Michael’s eyebrows arched, both in amusement at the instant mental picture he got of Annie whacking some poor, besotted cowboy, and in sudden, intense jealousy. She was far too lovely to have never been kissed, but he purely hated every boy or man who’d ever touched her.He cleared his throat, but his voice remained raw. “God, Annie, I've wanted to kiss you for so long, ever since that day you rode with me on Jet. You darn near drove me insane.”
Annie’s eyes widened and she gasped, killing him sweetly.
“You fixing to haul off and smack me?” he grinned crookedly, not entirely certain she wouldn't do it, thinking they both might be better off if she did.
“Maybe I might,” she murmured, her gaze fixing helplessly on his mouth. “Unless of course, you kiss me again.”

When he stood and crossed the room to her, leaning close to her back, she sucked in a quiet breath. She hadn't lied when she said a woman had needs. She did. She missed having a man in her bed and having Morgan so close to her sent shivers racing up her spine.
He leaned in, trapping her body against the cabinet by placing both hands on either side of her. She could smell the soap on his skin and buried under what she knew was distinctly him, the faint hint of gun oil. Morgan Avery was every bit the kind of man she’d fancy. Strong, arrogant and just a little bit demanding. Turning her head to look at him, she was taken aback by the smile on his face.
“Anytime you fancy crawling into my bed Miss Thornton, feel more than welcome to do so. Hell, I’ll marry you myself if that’s what it takes. I've done worse things in life and a rash decision usually ends up working out in the long run. Crawling between your thighs every night would be no burden whatsoever.”
Abigail was stunned when he leaned closer and she felt the proof of his claim stabbing at her backside. He was aroused and the look on his face confused her. Was he serious about the marriage? When he leaned toward her, angling his head to kiss her, she realized he must have been.
The kiss shocked her for more reasons than one. What she thought would be a light teasing play of lips turned out to be so soul stealing, she had to grip the cabinet edge to keep from falling. Morgan Avery kissed like his world was ending. He devoured with a single mindedness, his tongue forced into her mouth to dominate and claim possession.
His arms banded around her waist, his body flush against her back and at the odd angle, Abigail couldn't seem to get close enough. She tried to turn but he pulled away, her bottom lip caught between his teeth for a brief second before he let go of her.
Dazed, she watched him turn and walk out of the room, his footsteps creaking on the stairs moments later. What the hell had just happened?
The Lawman

The Willow Creek Series, Book 1
On the run from her ex-lover…
Jilted by a no-show husband…
And now mistaken for a whore in the Diamond Back Saloon…
Abigail Thornton doesn't think things can get any worse. That is until a single slap to a man’s face starts a barroom brawl that lands her in the last place she expected to be.
Town Marshal Morgan Avery wants nothing more than to wash away the trail-dust and sleep for a week, preferably with a soft, willing woman by his side. Instead, he gets Abigail Thornton – all one hundred pounds of her thrust at him seconds before a fist connects with his face. Breaking up the fight takes more effort than he wants to admit and when the last man falls he finds Abigail still standing and not looking the least bit contrite.
Throwing her into the town jail for the night would salve his wounded pride and then he will let her go. Or that was the plan. When morning comes he finds himself oddly reluctant to do so. Miss Thornton is hiding something and he aims to find out what, even if he has to bed her to do so. But will one night in her bed be enough?

“Why didn't you let me kiss you just now, Taylor?”
His eyes narrowed. “Danielle...”
“Was it because you thought I'd regret it once I found out about you?”
“I suppose so.” He picked up the drink can again and stared at it. “How would you have felt knowing you'd kissed a killer?”
“I won't know until I try it.”
He snapped his head up. “Danielle, what are you saying?”
“I'm saying that if I have nothing to fear from you, then you can kiss me right? You didn't kill your wife so prove it to me. You don't like killing any more? Show me. Make me know I won't have anything to regret.”
Insane logic for an insane situation. Trapped in the middle of nowhere with a killer and feeling no fear? She bit back the hysterical laugh.
I'm doing this for him. To show I trust him.
Hell, who am I kidding? Everything about him called to her in a way she'd never experienced before. Her insides were still tingling with the anticipation of the nearly-kiss. Her emotions in a tailspin. If he didn't make a move soon she'd explode.
She knelt up, and pushed the tray out of the way. “Well?” Her knees trembled slightly. What would this really prove other than that they were both horny as hell?
When he made his decision and dipped his head towards hers, Danielle closed her eyes and grabbed his tee-shirt, to steady herself as well as to anchor him in place. He seemed to be hovering on the edge of something. His slight hesitation made her tighten her grip, silently willing him on.
Surprisingly, nothing like she expected. Instead of a dam-breaking, passionate torrent of a kiss, he gave her the sweetest, most heartbreaking kiss she'd ever experienced. A brief touch of his lips on hers, and the question “Do you trust me?” whispered so quietly against her cheek she thought she'd dreamed it. And when he sat back, and she opened her eyes, he looked drained. Like a man who had nothing left to give and for whom nothing mattered, except the answer to his question.

If you're anything like me, when I crack open a new book, I rush through the beginning, the budding relationship between the hero and heroine, and anticipate that spontaneous moment when they make their move. First up is one of my books, Leather and Lace, and I must say, the first kiss here will make your toes curl!
WARNING: The following excerpt is intended for ADULTS ONLY. There's naughty words and imagery so read with that in mind.
![]()
The song ended and a slower one replaced the fast, thumping beats she’d been dancing to and her partner took advantage of the change in tempo. His arms tightened around her waist and he leaned forward, nuzzling the side of her neck without invitation. She’d barely got her arms up around his shoulders when she felt someone brush against her back. An arm slid around her waist from behind and she was pulled into the warmth of a massive chest.
She grinned when she heard Luke tell her dance partner to “get lost.” To her surprise, he did. She turned her head, looking over her shoulder. He was grinning at her.
“Okay, maybe I didn't make my self clear,” he said, cradling her body in his arms.
“About what?”
He nuzzled the side of her neck and Roxy felt light headed. He ground his hips into her backside and she was pleasantly surprised to find him excited. The obvious bulge pushing into her butt caused her knees to go weak.
“About you coming back to the hotel with me,” he rasped in her ear.
“Oh, I’ll definitely go back. I’m staying there too.”
“In my bed?”
Roxy laughed. “Only if you’re a good boy.”
“Oh, I can be very good,” Luke promised, leaning down to brush a kiss on the side of her neck. Roxy’s eyes closed when he placed a series of warm, wet kisses to her skin and shivered at the feel of his tongue stroking her flesh. “It’ll be an experience you’ll never forget.”
“I’m sure it will,” she whispered.
He kept a firm grip on her waist but lowered one hand, skimming her hip before reaching the edge of her skirt. His fingers danced along her thigh, light, gentle strokes teasing her flesh. They swayed to the music, Luke’s breath warm against her skin and Roxy raised her arm, wrapping it around his neck and closing her eyes. She lost herself in the feel of him. The warmth of his body ignited her senses and his free hand roamed her flesh until goose bumps pimpled her skin.
She opened her eyes when she felt his fingers brush against the front of her panties and tried to control her breathing. She glanced around at the other dancers, looking to see if anyone was paying any attention to them, but to her amazement, no one was.
His probing fingers found the edge of the silk covering her and she gasped when one lone digit crawled under the edge of her panties.
“Someone’s a naughty girl,” he whispered in her ear, rubbing the soft bare skin between her legs. He gave her a brief, wicked smile before he captured her lips, forcing his tongue into her mouth.
Her body sagged against him. She drank in his kiss, letting him take what he wanted and she gasped when his curious fingers found her clit, rolling the small bundle of nerves in small circles.
He turned her suddenly, and ground his obvious erection into her hip. Reclaiming her lips, he crushed her to him, one large hand tangling into her hair and holding her to his hungry lips while the other did the most delicious things to her clit. It was more intense than any fantasy she’d ever had about him.
Luke Harris was definitely everything his image portrayed. He was sex. A walking orgasm just waiting for a place to happen. Seconds turned to minutes and Roxy broke the kiss with a gasp. She stared up into lust filled eyes and drank in the sight of it. His pale gray eyes had turned sparkling silver. Fire burned in his gaze and it was directed at her.
He placed a soft kiss on the side of her mouth, his tongue darting out to trace her bottom lip and she felt the small touch to the soles of her feet.
“I want you, Roxy. Now.”
Oh god. Roxy took a shuddering breath and tried to think around her sex-addled brain. Sleep with him now and chances are she’d be yesterday’s rubbish. Continue with Holly’s plan and… and what? Prolong her misery? Leave her with another lonely night with nothing but her fantasies to keep her warm?
The hand between her legs was still there. His fingers burning a trail over her inner thigh and she could only imagine the heights this man would take her. Three minutes with his fingers buried in her panties and she was undone. What if she had all night?
