How Sara Created Her First Traditional But Youthful Christmas (With All Target)

Guess who’s back? Like the badly wrapped, yet extremely sentimental gift under a tree, it’s me. And as promised in my Halloween post, I’m here to share my freshly decked halls (…we can all agree that phrase isn’t inappropriate, but for some reason it really, really sounds like it is, right?).

I know, I know. It’s not even DECEMBER yet. So why am I here? First, I was ready. We’re spending a ton of time in our house (all day, every day), and so we decided we might as well get the MAXIMUM amount of enjoyment out of our decor this year. Secondly, because a lot of other people are also feeling this way, and we wanted to make sure we could share all these good Target links with you before it all sells out.

As a few of you dedicated readers might recall, the last time I tried to decorate my old living space for the holidays it…uhhh…burned down. IT WASN’T MY FAULT. The fire had nothing to do with a Christmas tree set a blaze by one rogue light. The fire started in the apartment below ours, but it crept up and incinerated one full half of our living room. All the decor it didn’t turn to ash was melted. It’s now a hilarious memory, and we even took our holiday card photo that year next to our mostly melted tree among the rubble and ash. But the event left us pretty bare of holiday decor. And last year, around the holidays, we were still deep in renovations and had zero energy to decorate.

So when we were thinking of safe set locations for this year’s Target holiday shoot, I threw my “house hat” in the ring. I could kill two birds with one stone – Provide a safe shoot location, and have my home PROFESSIONALLY styled by professional stylists Emily Bowser and Erik Kenneth Staalberg (a literal dream team). We ended up swapping out a few of our furniture pieces for Target pieces to give y’all shoppable “get the look” vignettes, and we went full out MAXIMAL on the decor (we’ve pulled it back just a little for our actual everyday holiday living). But it was so fun to style, shoot, and now live in. Yes, I am drinking hot chocolate, listening to the “Christmas Cocktail Jazz” playlist, while burning 4 different varieties of holiday candles as I write this. If you celebrate Christmas, I highly recommend it.

Now I’m going to throw it to Emily (Henderson) to walk you through some easy tips so you too can make your Christmas dreams come true. Take it away, Em!

Make “Red and Green” Feel Edgy With Hits Of Darker, Moodier Colors

Sara wanted the traditional red and green and of course, I support any and all Christmas color palettes but I was curious how she was going to do it to feel fresh and youthful. When I walked into her living room I was so impressed that it did feel SO fun and not “grown-up” traditional. They did it by mostly adding in a heavy dose of black, navy, and darker reds. The black houses on the mantel have a modern feel, there are dark blues in the pillows and ornaments and they brought in more of a cranberry red in the pillows. WELL DONE.

Don’t Be Afraid Of “Christmas Kitsch”

Everywhere you look, there are traditional elements but mixed in is a lot of unexpected “Christmas kitsch” that took me a while to put my finger on. I was like, ‘why does this feel so fun’ and then saw it – kitschy elements everywhere. The Santa Clause garland over the sofa is so playful (but in the black works so well here). There are little deer on the cabinet on a bank of snow. Vintage-style metal cars with trees on top are peppered around and even the bike advent calendar.

I’m really hoping/requiring that Mac or Sara fully embrace the “elf on the shelf” tradition and hide it every morning in weird places and threaten each other with Santa being able to see if they are good or not. IT’S SO WEIRD BUT of course, we do our lazy parent version of it.

Add The Holiday “Glow” With Candles, Lights, And Light Up Trees

If you only do two things to set the mood it should be this – greenery and good lighting in the form of sparkly lights and candles (real or flameless). And bonus points if you get holiday scented candles – pine, cinnamon, cranberry. When I walked in it smelled SO GOOD because a lot of the candles in the fireplace were indeed scented and mixed together. This is especially awesome when you don’t have real greenery. They truly made the room smell SO good.

It’s also such a great non-functional fireplace hack – load it up with red, green, and white scented candles and make sure to vary the candle heights (use candle holders too!). It makes the room GLOW.

You’ll also see that those houses (stocking holders) have lights in them (and are only $30 for the set of 4!), which is another super easy way to bring in ambiance, and little pops of glow that at night make the room sing.

The trees on the dining table are so awesome (I have them in blush) because they are battery operated and glow up evenly – we haven’t changed our batteries in a couple of years. BIG fan. And if I can give one tip for the lazy decorator it’s ‘pre-lit’ trees, garlands, and wreaths. I know not all of them come with lights, but I always end up adding string lights so if you can get them lit, just do (like the trees on the black cabinet).

Such good holiday glow and cheer everywhere. I love those muted red velvet pillows with tassels. Can you believe they are only $20?? So super affordable and add a ton of style (they come in blue, too).

The No-Fail Dependability Of Wreaths (And How to Customize)

Wreaths add such high-impact “holiday” considering they are hung with just one nail (or command strip). Putting one over the mirror on the mantle (how good is that “mantle mirror“?? – GENIUS) transforms the mantel with just a simple shape and color.

They customized both of the above readymade faux wreaths with ribbons, which made them feel more custom and special. GOOD MOVE, team. The shape is so simple, so adding a twist to it is certainly a fun way to shake it up.

A New Way To Display All Those Cards

This year I’m desperate for cards – more than any other year. I’m tempted to make my address public because getting something personal in the mail, that makes me feel connected to the world seems like what we need right now. They came up with a genius way to display them with a super sweet garland and clothespins. I also love the creative garland “design” with the double layer, that you can obviously add more and more to. Please send me cards. I’ll do this and then keep them forever…

Little Affordable Festive Touches

Even if you don’t have a big space, you can still add in little “moments” like Sara, Bowser and Erik did in these shelves. I have those light-up tree faux candles, too and put them in my bathroom (by the way). And another wreath hack that they did was bind two sprigs together to hang above that horizontal space above the bookshelf. So good and easy.

Give The “Little Village” A New Spin, On Your Mantel

I love how they styled the mantel like a village scene – trees, houses, and even vintage style cars. It’s an updated “little village” (by the way, how shocked are we all that I haven’t gone crazy creating a miniature Christmas world yet? Don’t worry, will do now that the kids are older). The stocking holders that are a house make it easy to do this then add a few bigger and a few smaller.

You Don’t Have To Take Your Tree Too Seriously

I love how they just went for it, void of any pretentiousness. Some candy canes, some animal figurines, Mac’s nutcracker collection (how cute is that?). It’s just fun and unexpected, but easy to do. You don’t NEED a garland or even a star (!!!) if you have enough happening in the room, and it lets their eclectic ornaments (some of which they had collected post-fire) shine.

I am so happy for these two who can celebrate this year, fully decked out. A huge thanks to Target for partnering with us on this (yes everything is from Target besides the sofa and dining table furniture). Yes, even the rug which I couldn’t believe (it’s also just an affordable price for an area rug).

2020 UPDATE: EHD-Approved Artificial Trees And Garland Because They Make Life SO MUCH Easier (Plus Pretty Trimmings)

Last year, there was a BIG ask for our favorites shoppable Christmas decor items. SO this EHD styling elf scoured the internet to do just that…and we’re back with an update to that post. We are talking faux trees, tree stands, skirts, garlands, trimmings, OH MY. I mean, recommending beautiful decor is kinda one of our favorite things to do, so granting a wish you asked for is a straight-up no-brainer. I know we have already chatted about new styling ideas and going over our favorite vignettes from years past but now let’s get into the “add to cart” portion of the designing lesson, shall we? I mean if we know anything it’s that Christmas decor is selling out FAST!

First up, the most important piece to the holiday puzzle…the tree.

I’ve always been on Team “Real Tree” but there are some very convincing faux options on the market. AND the amazing thing about a faux tree is that a ton of them come pre-lit. SIGN ME UP. It takes out all of the light spacing, cord tangling stress and leaves only the fun ornament hanging. Speaking of ornaments, have you heard about ? It’s her new favorite memory-hoarding hobby and this year she has already picked out some GREAT ones and has inspired me to expand my collection.

A tree really isn’t complete without a skirt or a tree stand right? You can’t just stick it anywhere and a tree without a tree skirt (or collar) is like wearing an awesome fancy dress with flip-flops. It’s just never okay. So to avoid this potential tragedy, here are our favorite tree stands, collars, and skirts.

While I finally have a beautiful tree skirt (massive upgrade from last year’s “blanket”) I realllly love #6. How STUNNING is it? But I also love #5, #8 and #11.

Mallory’s Gift Guide: The Actually Awesome “Trendy Gifts” For The 20 Something In Your Life

Hey all, Mal the Gal here. And today I’m bringing you all the trendy gifts that you can give someone when you want to kinda impress them and be like, “yeah I know the trends here you go I’m hip and cool” and they’ll thank you because they’re also wanting to be trendy. It’s easy if you follow this guide:

1. Ilia Mascara| 2. Glossier Milk Jelly | 3. Coola Sunscreen | 4. NYX Brow Gel

1. Ilia Mascara: I’ve talked about it once and I’ll talk about it every chance I get until I don’t work here anymore. Basically, it’s the best thing in the world and this brand is IT. Plus it’s a clean beauty brand so you/they won’t be putting bad things on your/their beautiful face.
2. Glossier Milk Jelly: The trendy face wash that actually rocks. It feels so good on the skin and smells great.
3. COOLA Sunscreen: Sunscreen is never not cool, especially a good face sunscreen to protect that beautiful face of yours. I personally love the brand COOLA because it’s SO light and I love how it goes on under makeup but you also definitely cannot go wrong with pretty much anything from the brand Supergoop. I love their makeup setting sunscreen which I also use.
4. NYX Brow Mascara: I’m a big fan of this brow brush because I have light eyebrows that don’t work with brown brow gel and I’ve found this one to be the best color and functionally it’s also great because it keeps them brows in place. This is also super affordable which makes it a great stocking stuffer.

Now I rarely give clothing as gifts because it can be HARD to nail someone’s style, but if you want to give the gift of some trendy clothes these are IN rn:

1. Boots | 2. Skirt | 3. Sweater | 4. Bag

1. Boots: Boots are hard to go wrong with, because they’re so useful and versatile. This year, ankle boots are still a great buy and these from Topshop are my favorite out right now, but also note that tall boots are back and you can’t go wrong with those either.
2. Checker Sweater: Anything checkerboard is great. It’s a VERY hot pattern right now (same with leopard and snakeskin, as we know). So when you mix it with a sweater, it’s destined to be a great win.
3. Pleated Skirts: YOU GUYS who knew the tennis/school girl skirts would be so big in 2020. Hop on the train and buy one for your favorite trendsetter.
4. Crossbody Bag: It’s never not in, but a great crossbody is a great investment. I’ve had my eye on this one for quite some time, and there’s also a checker version of the same thing if you’re down.

Most 20 somethings are in new apartments, college apartments, or maybe just moved back home and are redoing their space there, so home decor is not a bad option to give as a gift (plus this is a design blog ain’t it?) So here are some trendy home decor items:

1. Vase: Ecovibe is such a great business and it’s black-owned, which is important to support. They have awesome stuff for a really affordable price like this v cute vase! plus they’re super sustainable which is another huge plus.
2. Cheetah Pillow: I bought this for my apartment and it INSTANTLY infused personality into what otherwise was a blank slate kind of place. It’s so good and I cannot speak any more highly of this pillow. Get one.
3. Muzzen Button Radio: This is awesome because it’s a cute decor piece but it ALSO is a BLUETOOTH SPEAKER. I’m so obsessed with this company it’s not even funny. They come in so many cute colors and sizes (I have their mini baby tiny one that works SO well and I take it everywhere with me). Grab one because it’s the best gift for literally anyone actually.
4. Leather Catch-All: Catch alls are great and they’re even better gifts because lots of people forget to buy them for themselves. They honestly make life so much easier, plus this one is great since it can be embroidered. I want one for my nightstand badly. Love. it.
5. Kelly Wearstler Coffee Table Book: This is a such a great coffee table book to inspire that 20 something to create some awesome interiors. I don’t know many people who don’t like what Kelly Wearstler does and it’s so fun to see all her projects. Of course, if Kelly’s style is too wild for whoever you’re gifting this to, go for Amber Interiors new book or you really can never go wrong with Styled by Emily Henderson tbh:)
6. Bubble Candles: Or really any sculptural candles. These bubble ones are so trendy and fun, plus we also love the lady bust candles and everyone in our whole company can’t get enough of these sculptural totem candles.

If the person you’re giving gifts to is into fitness AT ALL, then this is a great year to give some fitness gifts because lots of gyms are clothes and working out at home is a new ball game I’m personally trying to play (but it’s hard).

1. MANDUKA Yoga Mat: It’s called the taj-mahal of yoga mats for a good reason. I invested in this bad boy at the beginning of quarantine and boy am I happy about it. It’s so wonderful because it molds to YOU so you can really make it your own. I got the pro in sage green, but I also gave the pro-lite to my sister for her birthday since she usually takes them around to yoga classes and travels with it. Both are great, you can’t go wrong. Just know it’s the best gift ever.
2. APL Shoes: I recently discovered APL shoes and I am actually now an unsponsored, unpaid, uncontracted brand ambassador for them (they just don’t know it yet). I bought these shoes which have NO LACES YOU GUYS, so I just slip them on and off with ease and I wear them on and off throughout the day. They are so great because when I jump rope or go on walks I never have to tie my shoes and it’s the best feeling in the world. The ones without laces have less structure though, so if you’re a runner or want to do really high-intensity stuff, these are for you. I personally want to get these lace up ones so I can switch off between wearing the two (I’m not kidding I wear my APLs everyday)
3. Bala Bangles: These are cute and cool and are all the rage these days. They just add that lil extra UMPH to any workout and are not ugly ankle weights so you don’t feel weird wearing them. I want these so bad & I think Em put them on her gift guide (part 2 coming soon) too so that’s a double endorsement.
4. Foam Roller: It’s the one thing I need but for some reason will never buy myself. Hence why it’s a great gift. This marbled one is so cute too.
5. Carbon 38 Sports Bra /Leggings: I’m the kind of person that works out better when I feel cute in my workout get up which is so annoying but I know a lot of people feel the same. I love a legging sports/bra combo as much as the next gal, but Carbon 38’s stuff is on a new level, guys. It’s so hot right now it burns me when I look at it. The amount of sponsored ads I get for this is insane, and can I just say, they’re working. I love this leopard set and have had my eye on it for months now, but you really can’t go wrong with any of their sports bra/legging combos, they’re SO CUTE.
6. Weighted Jump Rope Or any jump rope: I received a jump rope as a gift (I had never done it except for like in elementary school) and I am so obsessed with it now. It’s so much fun to do that I actually feel motivated to do it. Plus it gets my butt outside on long days when I’m working from home. If you’re gifting to someone who doesn’t jump rope yet, then give them a regular jump rope, but if you’re gifting to someone who does jump rope, go for the weighted one.

Our Scandinavian (And Easy, Mess-Free) Holiday Living Room Reveal + How I Finally Figured Out My Biggest Styling Problem… And Solved It

Last year we decorated our house in LA per usual – we went all out which took 3 days with 3 people. It’s my job so this is actually “normal”. Then two days before Christmas we came up here for the break. Obviously, I wanted to decorate here a bit with a tree, etc, but we weren’t going to shoot it for the blog (it was too late) so I just kept it easy and threw up some greenery, wood and white ornaments, and fake candles. It took a few hours, max. Lo and behold it ended up being SO pretty for the amount of time it took. Granted I had great stuff to work with, mostly leftover Target and things from years past, but it was so pretty we even kept it up until February (which is questionable for sure). Brian looked at me in earnest and said, “Can you like, just do Christmas like this all the time?”

What? You don’t want to spend 5 hours wrapping fake presents in November? You don’t want 50 feet of real garland that has to be carefully hung everywhere with pine needles riddling our floors for a month? What? You don’t want every single surface dripping with holiday cheer? I love how we’ve always decorated our house for the holidays, but when you are shooting every angle you guess what, you decorate every angle.

And then I realized the biggest styling secret that truly has saved me from myself – LESS SURFACES. This house is easier because there are less surfaces, which is truly the only way to have less stuff, while not having it feel cold. An empty credenza? Well, that’s sad, so you feel like you need to put stuff on it (the ‘you’ here is ‘me’). But if you don’t NEED the credenza and you nix it all together in favor of a pretty piece of art (or bench), then indeed you can’t put stuff on it, thus less stuff. I know that I love stuff, “stuff” is kinda my thing but it also DRIVES ME NUTS, unless it’s perfectly picture-ready styled all the time. So in a way, I was my own worst enemy – creating clutter, to then just have perpetual ‘clutter body’. It’s a true marvel that I didn’t figure this out earlier. Now I know that not all of us are leaning towards a ‘less stuff’ lifestyle, but it’s actually been amazing living up here with so much less and I’ve been mentally so much happier living with less. SO the holidays shouldn’t be any different. Let’s go.

Color Palette

Last year we had just white, green and wood with lots of twinkle lights and it was DREAMY. But this year the kids and Brian both wanted some red. So I wanted to bring it in a subtle and sweet way, and keep it feeling very scandi. So I looked for details like red stitching, red tassels, and small red ornaments and I LOVE how it looks. You can do Christmas however you want, but I think this mostly green/white/wood combo with sweet red moments is what I like IN THIS ROOM (wait til you see the family room – she red).

FAUX GREENERY Is My New Friend

First of all, it took me a long time to get on the fake tree bandwagon, truly, and I will ALWAYS be excited to go pick out a tree with the kids (and we might get a small one for our front door on the outside in a pot in December) but once you get a good faux tree that you can store in a box with no watering, no drying, no pine needles you realize how much easier it is. And with covid, it makes so much sense to just order online. I always refused to have a fake one in our living room, but since we were headed up here so close to Christmas last year I just ordered one in online beforehand to avoid the hassle. We had two real trees in LA, we didn’t need another. This one I ordered last year after figuring out where it should go to make the room function its best. We thought about putting it on the big window wall and getting a huge one (which is what the previous owners had done) but we would have had to completely rearrange the space which is FINE. But that layout made the space flow so much less (I know because we tried it last year, much to Brian’s horror, after Christmas before we took it down just to make sure it was the best layout for this year). By putting it near the window it blocked off the flow to the kitchen and it removed one of our seating options (plus we had to rotate the rug, etc, we like the face the fireplace, etc, etc). So we put it next to the fireplace where it is now.

Now I will say this – HOLE IN THE MARKET ALERT – SOME faux tree inventor needs to design a tree that is tall and wide, but more flat in the back so it doesn’t force it to stick out into the room as much. Does that make any sense? We wanted tall (9′) but most of the ones that are 10′ are like 5′ wide which would have floated too far into the room and taken up so much space. I wish this tree were wider on the sides, but not on the back (I suppose we could get a bigger one then trim the back. – give it a back buzz cut?). Anyway, so if you are thinking that it’s kinda small you aren’t wrong, but it was $400 and I can’t return it and it’s pretty. Maybe next year I’ll put it up here in the loft where I’m typing and search for one with the exact proportions that I want (which is limiting because I want the balsam scandi style). OMG I’M SO SICK OF TALKING ABOUT THIS TREE.

Re faux-ness – it’s the same with garland. Is it as a pretty as real garland? Nope. Is it close? YES. Once you put it up and add candles and lights, it does the job in such an easy way. It’s an investment upfront but I’ve used that same garland for 3 years (and bought more this year for the railing above). It’s GOOD.

FAUX CANDLES

If you are anti faux trees I know what you are likely also super against… FAUX CANDLES. And that’s ok. But I personally love a lot of candlelight, every night in fact and that is simply unsustainable and unsafe with real candles. But I’m picky about my faux candles – I like a warm glow, waxy look, and a flickering flame. Last year I bought a fancy big set that I couldn’t find this year (just found it) so this year I bought this set and they were super splurgy and by Sterno, so I thought they would be amazing, and they are good. But I wish they were bigger and I would have likely not spent so much if I had read the dimensions. They are good, don’t get me wrong, and specifically, I like turning them on and off via a remote (I don’t know how to program it). They are just so easy and look real enough.

The big star is from Target (last year, sorry!) and the stocking holders are 3 years old (and light up but I didn’t have new tiny batteries). These are super similar though. We used two of these garlands and some twinkle lights. It KINDA bugs me that there is such a gap in the middle, but we don’t have 5 people in our family and I couldn’t spread them out evenly with the star. Actually, I could have probably just moved them closer together and put two stockings inside the ‘legs’ of the star. Oh well.

Ornaments

Last year I kept aside a lot of the wood/white ornaments and brought them up here, but then I went to CostPlus and they had all these cute scandi wood cut out houses and white paper stars (they fold open) and then I went to a couple of craft stores (last year) and bought all their wood ornaments (that birdie keeps trying to paint and does not understand the concept of just having raw wood). Most of our personalized ornaments (and boy are there a TON) are on the tree in the family room – again stay tuned for that. Lastly in February, last year, I was thrifting and I stumbled upon a big ’25 cent ornament’ bin. I spotted some of these vintage scandi wood ornaments and started digging furiously through the bin to find more, serotonin pumping hard and fast. I think I got 30 total and ran to the cash register as if I were going to get caught, or like there was going to be a run on Christmas ornaments in March???? I screamed to Brian about the score and he was unimpressed, fearful even. And that’s when I realized that I had officially turned into the year-round-Christmas-ornament-shopper that 27-year-old Emily would never have recognized or predicted. I’m ok with it. I LOVE it actually.

Pillows And Throws

You can go full-on with Christmas pillows, but I like mixing in 1-2 with just cozy “winter” pillows. I had these green cable knit pillows from last year (and tie in with the tree) then faux fur pillows that I already had, so I just bought this sweet ‘Merry’ pillow (the ‘fa la la’ one is Target, but from last year). I love that Hearth and Hand throw with the red stitching on the chair– it just feels sweet but keeps it quiet.

The coffee table holds three white paper trees that (going with the paper ornaments on the tree) that I bought last year from Food52, but otherwise it’s styled like it usually is.

The floor pillow by the fireplace is super expensive but it is VERY VERY GOOD, here’s why: Most floor pillows aren’t big enough to really lounge on and this one is HUGE with cushy down fill, and made of a really pretty grey linen. It’s so comfortable and cushy, not too firm or bouncy. It’s made for meditation so it comes with a round pillow that is super heavy and feels like it’s full of beans which I rest my head on almost every day while snuggling here with the pups. Of course, they think it’s a dog bed, but I normally read here in the mornings on the weekends for a couple of hours and it’s just dreamy (and we can wash the cover. We used to have a big cozy alpaca over here, too, but the pups sent a clear message one day 1 of their life in this house that any fur would become a toilet for them.

I love it all with a few regrets – this tree wouldn’t fit in a tree collar, which I prefer (I don’t mind skirts, just love the look of collars). I wish the tree were slightly bigger, but it’s fine. I wish I had evenly placed the stockings (still might) and I wish I had put sparkly twinkly lights on the little potted faux trees on the hearth (and plan on doing so). I’ll put some batteries in the house stocking holders and call it a day.

What I love about it is how low maintenance it is, truly. By using faux everything, keeping it mostly neutral, and leaning into textures and sweet details, it feels holiday in such a pretty and dare I say sophisticated way.

Malcolm’s Gift Guide: The “Quality Over Quantity” Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your List (Especially Those Hard To Shop For Hims)

Ahhh. After both the longest and shortest year of our lives, the holiday season is upon us. Time might feel entirely like a construct at the moment, but love and generosity are anything but! As such, I’ve compiled a list of products that I love, would love to receive myself, or would love YOU to receive. What better time to pamper each other than when we’re spending more quality time at home than ever before? Let’s get to it:

2. West Elm Hand-Painted Doormat: I feel like buying a nice doormat is one of those things that people don’t often prioritize… like buying new socks or changing air filters. Shoulder that responsibility for a friend by getting them one as a gift! This option from West Elm is quirky, trendy, and will be sure to turn heads.
3. Lulu and Georgia Accessory Stand: I’ve been eyeing this accessory stand for a while, but…I don’t have many accessories, and have a hard time justifying it for myself. Please purchase this for a loved one and let me live vicariously through them. Lulu and Georgia products are Q U A L I T Y and this price point is definitely tempting.
4. Orkposters: My sister gifted me a couple of screen prints from Orkposters about five years ago, and they’ve been staples in my art collection ever since. I personally own the brain anatomy and heart anatomy prints, but they’re more prominently known for their city and neighborhood prints. 1. Wild Interiors by Hilton Carter: I’ve plugged this book on the blog before, and I’d highly recommend it as a gift. This has been the perfect coffee table book in my house, and my company is always floored by the beautiful photography and interiors. 10/10 recommend.
2. Moleskine Journal Pack: If you have someone in your life who journals or appreciates taking notes, they’ll go through these Moleskine journals in no time at all. I use mine to jot down design ideas, make to-do lists, and keep track of my personal budget, and I honestly wouldn’t be a capable adult without it. They’re small enough to take on the go, and are very stylish! This would be another good idea for a stocking stuffer or secret Santa gift.
3. The Things That Matter by Nate Berkus: This book is a must-own for any design lover in your life. It propelled me years ago to get into interior design as a serious pursuit. Objectively, the content is absolutely beautiful, but it also comes with a fair share of touching personal stories that really hone in on the spiritual and human connection that comes along with intentionally-designed spaces.

1. Bevel Shave System Starter Kit: This is a Bevel product that would be perfect for the shaver in your life. Not only are these quality products, but they’d look great in your bathroom!
2. Hims Total Hair Package: Hims is a company that specializes in men’s health, and this hair package would make a great gift for helping the maintenance of thick and healthy hair. They sell a wide variety of products to support men’s health, so a gift card would also be a great idea so that the guy in your life can pick his own products!
3. Jimmy Choo Man: Real talk. Whenever I spray on this cologne before walking out of the house, I feel unstoppable. It’s the perfect balance of dark and light. Sweet and warm. Sophisticated and playful. GET THIS COLOGNE for someone as a gift. Nobody will regret it.
4. Shea Moisture Complete Beard Kit: As a Black man (a Black man with a beard, specifically), I have sworn by Shea Moisture products for years. The items in this beard kit have been on constant rotation in my bathroom for as long as I can remember, and I would ABSOLUTELY recommend them as a gift or stocking stuffer. Shea Moisture is another black-owned business, and they also have an extremely extensive line of women’s natural hair care products that would be great as gifts as well!
5. Bevel Trimmer: This trimmer. Has been on my wishlist. Forever. I haven’t felt completely comfortable going to the barbershop during the pandemic, and these would allow me to TRY to learn the “art of the shape-up” on my own. Also, Bevel is a black-owned business, which is always a win in my book!
6. Jack Black Lip Balms: I’ve solely used Jack Black products on my lips for years with a steady rotation of uniquely-flavored lip balms. This package has some of my favorites, and it’d make a great gift for anyone that prioritizes self-care and a little taste of pampering.

1. The Tie Bar Neckties: I love to receive classic neckties as gifts. I wear a tie nearly every day, so the versatility of multiple options keeps me inspired and feeling good. Stay away from trendy patterns, though, because they won’t maintain the longevity of more timeless options. I love these charcoal, burgundy, and green options from The Tie Bar!
2. Gap Denim Jacket: I purchased this jacket last year, and it is so comfortable! It would make a perfect give for your partner if they love a rugged, lived-in, and cozy aesthetic. It matches well with anything. It can be paired with black jeans for a more sophisticated look, or with gray joggers for a casual-but-intentional vibe.

Northface Men’s Campshire Full-Zip Jacket: Full transparency: I received this jacket as a gift about ten years ago…and I still wear it nearly every day during the fall and winter months here on the east coast. It’s the most comfortable piece of clothing I’ve ever owned. It’s on the pricier side, but the recipient will get LONGEVITY out of it, hunty. Definitely worthwhile.
5. Redwing Rover Boots: As someone who has a hard time committing money to shoes, it’s saying a lot that I purchased these and haven’t regretted it for a second. If you have someone in your life that doesn’t treat themselves to new shoes often, these would be the perfect pair of boots to get for them. They wear beautifully, look awesome with many different looks, and are extremely comfortable.
6. Uniqlo Socks: Socks. The gifts that keep on giving. Honestly, you can’t really go wrong with the gift of socks. I love Uniqlo in general, but their socks take the cake in affordability and utility. I personally love the neutral colorways like light gray, dark gray, and black, but they have every color under the sun!

1. Motorized Tie Rack: Perhaps not the cutest item in my gift guide, but I have always had the hardest time keeping my neckties organized. This motorized system keeps them nice and organized, and the technological aspects will surely satisfy the gadget-lover in your life.
2. Woud Clothes Rack: This is a hybrid “home-and-fashion” item, and something that I’ll absolutely be incorporating into my current bedroom makeover. If you have someone in your life that likes style and prioritizes structure and organization, this is the gift for them. Personally, I think valets are extremely utilitarian and add a touch of boutiquey sophistication to a bedroom. This specific one from Woud hits all the right marks, in my book.
3. Outdoor Research Essential Face Mask Kit: Masks will be essential parts of our lives for a while! As such, ANYONE will appreciate receiving a quality mask as a gift. I picked up this one from REI a few months ago, and it has been the most comfortable mask that I’ve worn yet. It comes in multiple colorways, and a built-in air filtration system.
4. The Tie Bar Face Masks: Speaking of masks! These options from The Tie Bar would be great for me, personally, as they allow the same versatility as neckties do. Multiple patterns and colors make them seem like real accessories and less like obligations (even though they are indeed obligations. Wear a mask!).

2. Riedel Crystal Double Old Fashioned Glasses: I bought these exact glasses for myself a few months ago, and I’m perpetually receiving compliments about them when I have people over. They’re high-quality, feel great in your hand, and can make even the most basic drink feel elevated and upscale. The price point is VERY reasonable for the quality.
3. FROST Silicone Round Ice Cube Tray: Keeping with the theme of…alcohol…I also purchased this ice tray from Target recently, and the spherical ice makes my Riedel glasses feel THAT MUCH MORE sophisticated. At just $10, this would be a great stocking stuffer or secret Santa gift!

You could honestly buy this and just have it on deck just in case you forget to get a gift for someone at the last second! And if you’re on top of your gifting this year, then just keep them for yourself.
2. Jayson Home Alphabet Coasters: Um. I stumbled upon these coasters recently, and I LOVE them. You could buy a set of three with a friend’s initials. A thoughtful and stylish gift.

2. Nest Thermostat: Funny story… I spent almost the entire summer without air conditioning. It was truly an awful experience that I wouldn’t wish upon anybody. As with most of these tech-focused gift ideas, this one is a little pricey, but completely worth it for its capabilities.

1. Bose SoundLink Speaker: I received this portable speaker as a gift years ago, and it is absolutely the best! The bluetooth capability is CLUTCH and the sound quality is amazing for a reasonably-priced speaker.
2. Tile Mate: If you know me…you’ll know that I’m quite forgetful. This Tile device makes it easy to track your everyday objects, and I could definitely use one (or two…or three).
3. Record Player: Music sounds SO MUCH MORE AUTHENTIC on a record player. If you have a music-lover in your life, they’ll surely appreciate a record player as a gift, if they don’t already have one. As for records: I would recommend Motown, Leon Bridges, Adele, and Bruno Major for general moody vibes that lend themselves well to vinyl.

My Obsession With Christmas Ornaments And How Much They Strangely Mean To Me And My Life

My desire for documenting my life, specifically anything sentimental and happy is so extreme that I do wonder if it’s something I should unpack in therapy (also I need a therapist, not joking). What is behind my obsession for or need to document my life? Am I trying to prove something to myself? To others? To my future? Rewriting my past? Or is it just about appreciating and celebrating all the moments? For however long I can remember I’ve journaled (thus the birth of this blog because why not journal for millions to read!!!) and have made scrapbooks… Like not just when I was little. I even have a highly uncool college scrapbook. Heck, I made Brian a scrapbook when we were 21 years old of our “first year” as a couple. That’s not normal, guys, I realize that, and yet BOY do I love looking at that scrapbook. I kept every Death Cab For Cutie ticket stub, every birthday card from him, even a business card from the bar where he put on “When A Man Loves a Woman” on the jukebox and I knew that while he was too scared to say it, that he was telling me for the first time that he loved me (it was a well received soft pitch). I get that these things can be captured in photos now, but the tactile experience is far more emotionally satisfying to me and triggers the memory in a way more visceral way.

BUT I HAD NO IDEA THAT YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE COULD BE A LIVE, LIVING, SCRAPBOOK until this year. How? So simple. You just think about what big things happened that year and you buy an ornament that represents it. I get that scrapbooks are hard to keep up with (I have a really good “done is better than perfect” philosophy for my kids’ scrapbooks, no stickers or anything – I just shove things in sleeves). But ornaments? SO EASY AND FUN. You want to decorate your tree anyway. Your kids want to do crafts ANYWAY and once you see the excitement in their eyes as they pull out an ornament and say “Mama, mama, I remember this!!! this is when we went to Disneyland for the first time!!!” IT’S PURE JOY.

Before I get into the ornaments I must give you more of an emotional biography. I was too cool for ornaments, most of my life, and when I got them as a “gift” I would be like “cool, so…. yah, I’ll put this bright yellow rubber duck ornament on my perfectly curated tree”. I just didn’t GET IT. They are busy, often expensive, and ruin the vibe. Then last year as I was helping my friend trim her tree I got it. As she pulled out each ornament she told me a story behind it, and I was like, “Hold up. Wait. I’ve been missing a new memory hoarding opportunity my entire life??”. We didn’t do this as kids, probably because we lived in rural Oregon, before the internet and there were 6 kids which meant a LOT of annual ornaments. So I didn’t know it was a thing. In fact, I remember going to a Christmas store in Boston 15 years ago in August, prepping for a big holiday shoot (always in August), and seeing all the shoppers thinking “um I know why I’M here but WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ALL SHOPPING FOR CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST’. I thought it was SO weird and I definitely judged. I now know they were tourists and their kids were getting their “Boston” ornament (and looking back I’m like WHERE IS MY BOSTON ORNAMENT!!!??)

I may be swinging too far in the other direction, I know, I know, but so many ornaments as well as I documented the big moments for our family with custom ornaments. The tree is already dripping. But I don’t care. It is so fun for me and the kids, and even Brian was so excited to see our excitement. The kids SQUEAL for hours.

I bought a pot ornament for the year when soup became my lifestyle, a stack of books when Charlie started reading, and Birdie picked out a unicorn the year she became OBSESSED with yes, unicorns. This year we got a bike for Charlie because he’s mastered it, an art easel for Birdie, and a typewriter for Brian because he’s writing a novel. This is the year where I realized I was overscheduled and realized that I was happier not being a workaholic… Not sure what that looks like in the way of an ornament. Maybe I’ll shop for something that feels peaceful and calm? I dunno. Last year my friend got me an “Outlander” ornament, I bought myself a cute “Church” ornament because I started going to church and Brian got an awesome Shakespeare ornament because he was in an amazing production of Othello. You get it. Take inventory of your year and think about a way it can be represented in an ornament. My god, that sounds stupid, but just trust me, it’s fun.

OOF. WHAT A YEAR AMIRIGHT. A lot happened and buying an ornament sounds stupid, but picture yourself 10 years from now pulling out your Santa with a mask on an ornament and saying, oh right. that was QUITE the year. I bought an RBG, BLM, Pandemic, and Biden/election ornaments.

This year we got pups and left our house in LA. Obviously, we need to have custom ornaments made to commemorate these huge life decisions. Did you get engaged? Married? Pregnant? Have a baby? Sell your House? Publish a book? Get a new job? There are so many custom ornament places on Etsy and you send them photos and they do drawings, painting, embroidery, etc. Or just get one that reminds you of the big life moment.

Don’t forget the name of who picked it out, and the date – this is CRUCIAL and if someone gets one for you put their name on the bottom and I PROMISE it will trigger the memory of that time/year. You will forget. We all forget. Your brain generally only remembers the heights of emotions that can permanently imprint. Will I forget that Birdie broke her arm? No. But will I remember that she was 4, that her cast was pink, and that we had to go to the hospital at the beginning of the lockdown which felt terrifying? Probably. GOTTA GO FIND A CAST ORNAMENT.

Ryann’s Gift Guide: Gifts For Promoting Joy, Easing Anxiety, and Overall Self Care

I think we can all agree that being indoors for the majority of 2020 has been no easy feat. It certainly was an unprecedented turn of events that no one could have prepared for, which I think explains this societal shift towards mental health awareness. Look, humans need connection and security and when we are forced inside, isolated from friends and family, and worried about health and safety, it’s only natural some unwelcome feelings come up. I know I battled with my mental health this year but I am grateful that it resulted in some real positive life changes. 2. Cream Cotton Pom Throw: Blankets are always a welcomed and appreciated gift in my eyes. I actually don’t even own a cozy blanket at the moment and it always bums me out when I want to curl up on the sofa and watch my comfort show (The Office) for the millionth time. This one is made from recycled cotton and I love the calm, neutral color.
3. Emerald Fringed Lumbar Pillow: Everyone needs accent pillows in their home to add texture and coziness. This one would be a comfortable and stylish addition to anyone’s sofa or bed and the emerald color would definitely make a statement.

Life Update + Looking For Portland Architect/Contractor For A Major Restoration Of Our Future Family Home

We are pretty close to closing on a property in Portland which crossing fingers will be our family’s forever home (and you know that’s a BIG statement), and while I don’t want to jinx it I want to get my team in place because once we close we’ll want to move on the restoration so someday we can, say, live in it. I don’t want to give any details yet, but I will say it’s a magical property that shouldn’t still exist, but does and it’s going to be the focus of my life (and this blog) for the next few years. I’ve done renovations before where we’ve hired an architect for the initial drawings, but for the first time, I want to work with an architect on not just the floor plan but help with the finishes, someone who can not only help execute my vision but can bring genius creative ideas and expertise to make this property both restored to its turn of the century roots AND super modern/functional/interesting for our family. I don’t want to miss an opportunity or do something wrong. But more importantly, I know that the right architect can bring a different creative perspective, ideas I haven’t even thought of, and trust me that some of the things that I want to do could use another creative brain with serious vision (especially when it comes to restoring and yet modernizing a large turn of the century property).

I also want someone who is tapped into local vendors and makers to help me find the best, say, reclaimed wood flooring in Oregon. My family will be living here in California during the renovation (I think, all depends on schools) so having someone I trust up there both aesthetically and professionally is CRUCIAL as we won’t be able to visit so much what with this pandemic situation. I know first hand how important it is to have someone that can make in-person decisions when things come up (because they will).

I also want someone who is experienced in green design and sustainability building because if we are going to do this, we are going to do it RIGHT for the planet and longterm. I wish I could tell you more (I’m seriously DYING to close on this property and tell you), but this post is really just to put it out into the world to find the right architect or firm. It will be a huge press project and portfolio piece and I’m willing to take a lot of interesting risks to make this property SING.

Sneak Peek Inspo #1

The timing is to do the initial walkthrough/drawings in December with the hope of starting, well, asap after that. It’s a big project, likely at least a year (or 18 months) with a full scope of work (aka, we need someone with availability for a big job). My brother and his wife will be project managing it (which is so fun, I’m helping them with their new house which I can’t wait to tell you about, too). And trust me that if it turns out 1/2 as beautiful as it is in my head, it’s going to be STUNNING.

Technically I haven’t locked down a contractor yet as I was going to get an architect in place and get their input before hiring anyone. But ideally, we’d also find a GC that is interested in growing their business and documenting this with me, publicly and wants a pretty big portfolio project.

More to come, soon, I PROMISE. We are supposed to close at the end of November, and the family moves out in January. And no, its never been on the market so you can’t try to find it but I’ll show you every single detail when I can:)

Jess’ Gift Guide: “I Just Want Useful (But Pretty) Things This Year”

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that it’s 2020 and “things” feel less and less important or if it’s that I’m in my 30s and get more excited over a cordless Dyson vacuum than a pretty pair of new heels. Now don’t get me wrong I LOVE a beautiful shoe but I’m just going to get waaaaayyyyy more use out of that vacuum (FYI I have and love that vacuum and highly recommend to anyone who is thinking about making the purchase). So that’s the idea driving this gift guide. Now as we go into the first section you might be confused as to why it’s home decor… “Jess, you JUST SAID this was a ‘practical’ gift guide” here’s my explanation…

Beautiful home decor fills my soul and likely a lot of you too since you are reading a design site. I also think we can look at something being practical and something being an investment as the same thing. I know that they are different at first glance but isn’t it practical to invest in something you love (or know your loved one will love) due to its higher quality??? Ok, justification time is over so let’s talk about these special decor items:)

1. Not Work Related Wing Vase: A sculptural vase will ALWAYS be an amazing gift and last you forever. I love the bold yet simple angles and while I’m not a traditionally “purple person” I love the unexpected softness of the lavender (but it also comes in black and white). Plus it’s handmade by ceramicist, Sarah Hussaini. I know this may sound a little “out there” to some of you, but I am telling you that there is a different and special energy that you can feel from a piece that’s handmade.
2. Vase Wall Charm: I saw these a few months ago and have been obsessing over them ever since. They are 9″ wall charms. How cute is that name?? Plus for those of you who have design living friends, these are the perfect “3D” element to a gallery wall or would look awesome framed. Oh, they are also handpainted:)
3. Landscape Collage 40: I have been eyeing Jordan Sullivan’s work for a while now. I love how calm it makes me feel when I look at it. This one in particular is a collage so it has texture too! Art is one of those things that I think a lot people don’t think they need. Gifting art is such a personal and beautiful way to make someone feel loved and makes their space better.
4. Moroccan Checkered Rug: Did you think I would go without recommending at least one checkered item?? Ha, no way! Y’all this rug is so freaking cool and comes in a bunch of different colors and sizes. The reviews are amazing and say that it’s super soft. Basically, if I got this as a gift I would be over the freaking moon.

1. Standing Knots | 2. Line Drawing Series | 3. Metal Wire Basket | 4. Loren Pillow

1. Standing Knots: These are the mini (and more affordable) versions of my beloved squiggle by Kaite Gong. This is another REALLY special, handmade piece that would make an incredible gift. I really love the braid but you really can’t go wrong with any of the options. So go give a beautiful piece of art to a special person in your life AND support a female-owned small business. Win-win!
2. Line Drawing Series: Another reeeeealllly special piece of “non framed” wall art by the extremely talented Cindy Hsu Zell. There has yet to be a time when I’m scrolling through Instagram to not stop and stare and one of her pieces. They are textured, elegant and so unique. I would probably scream, cry and then jump up and down for longer than socially acceptable if I unboxed one of her pieces on Christmas morning (or any morning for that matter).
3. Metal Wire Basket: Baskets are also ALWAYS useful. And this one from H&M is so cute, it’s under $20 and could be used a ton of different ways. And if you wanted to up the ante, you could fill it with something else that’s fun (like compliments:))
4. Loren Pillow: As I’ve been pinning for my new apartment (!), I’ve been really into vintage (or vintage-looking) florals. This pillow is colorful without shouting at you, gives a very romantic vibe, and just looks like I want to cozy up to it by the fire. I just think it’s beautiful and if you have a friend or family member that has similar taste, this would be a great gift.

Now let’s move onto my promised “practical” gifts…

1. Bubble Umbrella | 2. A5 Softcover Notebook | 3. Black Step Ladder | 4. Secateurs

1. Bubble Umbrella: Last week, my brother called me and told me that his fiancée wanted a clear dome umbrella for the holidays. They live in Portland so an umbrella is likely the most practical gift I could give. So I went searching and found this cutie. It’s simple, protective, and super affordable. Sam, if you are reading this I hope you like it!!
2. A5 Softcover Notebook: This notebook is made out of recycled STONE!!!!!! Like the pages are stone. WILD. I think we should all be writing down our thoughts and feelings about this time. I mean we are living in a very historical moment. But back to the notebook. How cute would it be to write little notes on random pages as an unexpected surprise for your giftee. I did that once in a cookbook I gave my best friend for her bridal shower and she loved it.
3. Black Step Ladder: I’m not a tall person and have yet to live in an apartment that didn’t require me to own a step stool. I doubt I’m the only one. So as I was searching, this one popped up and I have to say that it’s one of the prettiest ones I’ve seen. It’s black, sleek and if I ever have had a hope in looking cool on a step ladder, it would be on this one hands down. So do your friend or family member a favor and replace that old one they have that’s falling apart. They will thank you AND feel super cool doing it:)
4. Secateurs: Everyone should have a good pair of secateurs. I’m not in any way a gardener but every time I buy a bouquet of flowers I wish I had a pair. These are beautiful and classic and anyone would love them.

1. The Trio of Knives: This is a gift that I never thought I would love so much. But they are AMAZING! I actually own them and not only are they beautiful but they have made cooking more enjoyable. I’ve heard that good knives are a game-changer but as a non-chef, I didn’t understand until now. These also come in a black and dark gray-blue (which would have been my second choice:)) If you want to really knock this gift up a notch, they sell cutting boards in very pretty colors. Also if my dad is reading this (he’s definitely not) I would like this copper core stainless steel pan.
2. Silpat Premium Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat: I own these and love them. Mainly because they create less waste for the environment but also because to me, they just look chic. Plus they also sell these storage bands that are nearly identical to a slap bracelet. Man the 90s were a time:)
3. Plissé Electric Kettle: My god is this a beautiful electric kettle! I haven’t owned one in a long time but since I now have a human-sized kitchen I think it’s time to reinvest. This is for sure a “leave out on the counter” kettle and would be a great gift for anyone who loves tea, Cup Noddles, hot chocolate… so everyone. But actually how funny would it be to give this beautiful kettle paired with a box of Cup Noddles??
4. Bamboo Mixing Bowls: So I had big plans to show you how I made my old kitchen functional for real cooking because apparently until quarantine I wasn’t doing that. Unfortunately, my move happened so it didn’t make sense to shoot it. But these mixing bowls were a part of the design and I love them. Full disclosure though, I bought the black ones (same maker) only after seeing the colorful ones which I might have opted for had I known. Either way they are great, sustainably-made, and dishwasher safe.
5. Ninja 4qt Air Fryer: I just want one so bad. I have heard so many great things and this one is highly reviewed. Think how easy making sweet potato croutons could be! If you have any thoughts let me know in the comments.
6. Handmade Distressed Blue Ceramic Plates: I know Emily already recommended these in her post, but I guess that just makes these VERY EHD approved. They are so freaking beautiful and special. If I still had open shelving they would have been my first purchase easy.

1. Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash | 2. Compostable Sponge Cloths | 3. Farmhouse Pottery Salt & Cellar Gift Set

1. Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash: Ok, hear me out. $42 for handsoap feels like an actual crime and I only purchased it initially because the guy working at the shop was SO helpful and I was the only customer in the store so I felt like I couldn’t back out after hearing the price. BUT with that said, it was one of the best purchases. It feels like a treat every time you wash your hands because it smells incredible and is a mini exfoliant, making them so soft. Oh and it lasts a very long time so again, an investment initially but ultimately pretty practical. Plus we need to keep washing our hands!
2. Compostable Sponge Cloths: Sustainable and beautiful. After Caitlin sang their praises I have wanted them ever since. I am a paper towel person and realllllly want to kick that bad habit in 2021 for good. So these are a great gift for anyone because we all wash dishes and make messes.
3. Farmhouse Pottery Salt & Cellar Gift Set: I can’t remember if I got this for Christmas last year or the year before but it has been an unexpected kitchen MVP. I remember opening it thinking “o wow beautiful but am I really going to use it??” And boy do I! The easy salt access is a dream and it is indeed beautiful. Such a great gift.

1. Black Fig + Rose Candle: Ok, this is going to sound weird but this candle smells like Brady circa 2016 which means it smells like the EHD office when I first started. My dad gave it to me for my birthday this year and after a couple of hours of trying to place the scent, I was like, “It’s the old office!” First off, Brady is one of those people that always smells awesome (something I’ve never been able to achieve. Does anyone else feel like perfume only lasts like an hour on them?). Because of this the office always smelled really nice. So it’s a very nostalgic scent for me personally but is also just a great smelling candle.
2. Tatine Forest Floor Glass Candle: Sara introduced me to this candle brand and it’s easily one of my all-time favorites. Luxury at its finest and comes in the prettiest glass container. I would have them in every room if I could… they aren’t cheap but they are worth it and a crazy wonderful gift.
3. Redoux Candle “529”: In case you missed my love letter to this candle a few months ago (was there wine involved when I wrote it? I’ll never tell), this candle smells like pure joy. Plus it’s more on the affordable side for a luxury candle so it’s a great one to buy for a few people or stock up yourself.

1. Portable Ceramic Space Tower Heater | 2. Kodak Luma 150 Pocket Projector | 3. Lexon OBLIO UV Sanitizing Wireless Charging Station

1. Portable Ceramic Space Tower Heater: No fireplace? No problem! Space heaters (while should be used carefully) can be a godsend. In case you’ve never lived in New York before they turn the heating pipes on or lived in LA and forgot it actually does get pretty cold, space heaters are everything. I love that this one also looks like a mini fireplace.
2. Kodak Luma 150 Pocket Projector: I think I’ve decided that until I can afford The Frame tv, I’m going to either use my computers (what I’ve been doing for years, except when my ex and I moved in together and that was his non-negotiable) or get a projector. And look at how cute and small this little guy is! Perfect for storing away until it’s showtime. It also looks super easy to use which I need when it comes to anything tech-related.
3. Lexon OBLIO UV Sanitizing Wireless Charging Station: I am the quintessential “sorry, my phone is dying” friend. I have also now turned into the “all I do is stare at a screen and now need a stronger glasses prescription” person during this pandemic. So with that said this little gadget could be THE answer. I mean it chargers, sanitizes, AND prohibits you from looking at your phone while working its magic. It also comes in white!
4. 2-Port Wall Charger: Like I said, my phone is somehow always dying but for some reason I have yet to buy more than one charger. It’s so dumb. So if I got a charger for Christmas I would be pumped. Likely someone in your life would feel the same.

1. Offline Activities | 2. Actually Curious – Happy Hour Edition | 3. HOOD CENTURY: 16 Modern Architecture Style Flashcards | 4. John Derian Playing Cards

1. Offline Activities: Ok maybe these shouldn’t be categorized as practical but they are necessary. Now that we are month 2893475343453945 into this pandemic, it can feel hard to think of fun random things to do that aren’t tech-related. We all need a break! So this fun (and also pretty) book is such a great gift.
2. Actually Curious – Happy Hour Edition: There are few things I love more than having deep conversations with friends. What’s more special than getting to know the people in your life even better. These cards are such a great way to bust out of the “well, how is your quarantine today?” routine. And what a fun way to continue to connect with your long-distance friends!
3. HOOD CENTURY: 16 Modern Architecture Style Flashcards: First off follow this Instagram account now. Then if you have any architecture or design-loving friends in your life, these flashcards are for them. It’s easy to drive past old buildings in neighborhoods that have been historically disenfranchised and not understand/fully appreciate their history and architectural significance. Jerald “Coop” Cooper decided to change that by making education and fun (and really cool) flashcards.
4. John Derian Playing Cards: There is something so nice about playing cards and these are BEAUTIFUL. So beautiful the giftee will probably leave them out all year.

1. C.E.O Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil: I’ve already recommended this in a link-up but it’s back because that is how much I love it. It just makes me and my skin feel glowy and for some reason putting on an oil makes me stop and take a deep breath in a way none of my other skin products do. That might just be me. But if you have someone in your life that wants to take care of their skin or loves skincare, this is a GREAT product.
2. Deluxe Microneedle Dermal Roller: The first time I heard about this roller was on Whitney Cummings’ podcast because people ask her about her skin all. the. time. This little roller apparently makes teeny tiny holes in your skin so all of that expensive product you put on your skin can actually get through and do its job. In case you didn’t know, neither Whitney or I are dermatologists so keep that in mind but I REALLY want to try it!
3. The Original 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm: This is THE lip balm. It has lanolin in it (which is used in nipple creams, fun fact) but will actually hydrate your lips in the most real way. I swear by it. A great small gift for anyone in your life.
4. Texture Reform: I consider this my “I’m a grown-up” skincare item and I love it. Retinol is apparently THE thing you want to be putting on your face to help make it look and feel awesome. This one, in particular, was created by celebrity esthetician Shani Darden whose clients include Jessica Alba and Shay Mitchell. All I want is awesome skincare/skin and if I got this I would be SO happy.
5. Supergoop! Jet Set SPF Travel Kit: Speaking of taking care of your skin, sunscreen is actually the most important. Especially if you are using retinol! Don’t use retinol if you aren’t dedicated to wearing sunscreen. Anyway, Supergoop is an EHD favorite, and for good reason. It goes on so light and is reef safe. So while no one is really jetting off anywhere this is a great gift for honestly anyone and is such a great price.
6. Mesh Body Exfoliator: I don’t know why I have yet to purchase this because it’s been on my list for a year (?). My body needs some exfoliation asap. So no need for a loofa anymore because this is apparently SO much better and also affordable!

1. Quip Smart Starter Set | 2. AquaHomeGroup Luxury Filtered Shower Head | 3. Olaplex Hair Repair Trial Kit

1. Quip Smart Starter Set: It took me a long time to get on the “Quip train” but now I never want to go back. The timed brush vibration made me realize I was not brushing long enough (sorry that’s a little TMI) and getting a new head every few months makes me not have to ask… Should I replace my toothbrush? Also, the holder also acts as a travel carrier!
2. AquaHomeGroup Luxury Filtered Shower Head: I am all about a filtered showerhead and with just over 7,000 rave reviews this one will likely be my next (I’m leaving my old one in the apartment. No need for the new tenant to have the gross old one). It’s crazy what a difference it makes on my hair!
3. Olaplex Hair Repair Trial Kit: I love love love this brand and this trial kit is only $25!! So if someone you know loves hair products or has been wanting to try Olaplex, I can’t recommend it enough.

1. The Mani System | 2. Boy Brow + Generation G Duo | 3. Skywash – Sheer Matte Lid Tint

1. The Mani System: I got this for my birthday this year (with these colors) and I am VERY happy to report that the hype is true. I love it so much and has made my at-home manicures so much better/easier. I now want all of their products… like the brand new Pedi System. Practical, a money saver in the long run, and a way to make you feel a little prettier.
2. Boy Brow + Generation G Duo: I have now tried a couple of brow gels and this one is still my favorite because it goes on light which I prefer. I also LOVE this lipstick. It says on the website that it gives the perfect “blotted lip” and that is 100% true. This is really an awesome and not too over the top but nice gift.
3. Skywash – Sheer Matte Lid Tint: I honestly just want to try this. Not the most practical but I really love a matte makeup look.

1. Eclair Card | 2. Windowpane Elmcourt Coat | 3. Ditsy Floral Sheer Ankle Sock | 4. Embroidered Button Up Scallop Midi Dress

1. Eclair Cardi: I have this sweater in cream and I wear almost every day. It makes me feel like I look cool but very cozy and it has the perfect amount of slouch. But man that green is GOOD.
2. Windowpane Elmcourt Coat: A good coat is never not a GREAT gift and this one is good. I love the color, the bold pattern, and the length. I feel like most everyone would feel amazing in this coat.
3. Ditsy Floral Sheer Ankle Sock: Socks are my next fashion accessory. Emily, Julie, and Bowser love to rock their cute striped socks with their slightly cropped pants and I want in. It feels like a very low but impactful lift and these floral ones are the first on my list.
4. Embroidered Button Up Scallop Midi Dress: I love that this dress is both neutral but special and very versatile. Perfect for work (if you are going into an office), family dinners (safely) and even grabbing a coffee (masked, of course).

1. Dylan Rancher Hat | 2. Reusable Loop Mask Set | 3. Sunglasses | 4. Women’s Striped Cuffed Beanie

1. Dylan Rancher Hat: This hat is beautiful (do you see that suede band??) and its light tan color makes it perfect for any season. AND it protects your face from the sun:)
2. Reusable Loop Mask Set: It wasn’t until I saw Yaminah Mayo and Erika Hart sport these that I knew I had to get them. They are happy, cool, and PROTECTS YOU AND THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU FROM GETTING SICK.
3. Sunglasses: I’ve tried to stray from my Ray-Ban aviators but always go back. BUT these are aviators with a twist and I am down!
4. Women’s Striped Cuffed Beanie: So while a rancher hat is very cute, when the temperatures drop and you need to cover your ears, a beanie is what you want. This one is only $15 and adorable.

1. Sweatsuit Set (Top & Bottom): My friend Emily (yes I am blessed with many Emilys in my life) recently bought this set and can’t stop talking about it. I also saw it on her in person and it’s so flattering and very soft.
2. High Rise Undies: More checks! These have been all over Instagram and I need a good pair of undies. I know these would make me feel really good (and cool). These are also 100% dance around in your house undies and THAT is a necessity if you ask me.
3. Rec Room Sweatshirt: I’m typically not one for a graphic tee or sweatshirt but this one is so cool and looks so comfortable. I’m also pretty positive I heard about them on Armchair Expert so thanks Monica!
4. Compressive High-Rise Leggings: I have talked about these MANY times before but it’s because they are that good!! So soft, so comfortable yet flattering AND, sustainably made. I am about to order my 4th pair.

1. Boots | 2. Ankle Socks | 3. Checkered Slides | 4. Fuzzy Slippers

1. Boots: I mean just look at these! They are beautiful and the perfect balance of city meets mountains. As someone who needs some boots, I only want these.
2. Ankle Socks: So I don’t own these but my cousin swears they are the best ankle socks. You know, one’s that don’t show but actually stay on properly. Who doesn’t need these?
3. Checkered Slides: I think in 2020 it’s almost mandatory to have at least one color of these slides. They are easy, make any outfit more fun and lastly… the checkered obsession is real.
4. Fuzzy Slippers: I want to be a slipper person in my new apartment and these are ridiculous but awesome and will keep my feet very happy and will provide endless laughter every time I will look down. Can you put a price on that? Yes, it’s $10. SOLD.

WHEW! This post might be one of my longest but as Emily said earlier, we all want and should make more conscious purchases this year (and all the ones after).
