Design Blogger School: The Instagram Tips Our Social Media Manager Gave Our EHD Mentee

Navigating the world of social media can feel comparable to navigating the open ocean. It’s uncharted territory with lots of choppy water, and it can feel like there’s a pirate ship called “The Algorithm” constantly on your tail blowing cannonballs. Now if you clicked on this post, you might be here to find out the magical formula for getting 1 million followers overnight, and if that’s you, prepare to be extremely disappointed. I hate to tell you that there’s no real step-by-step formula for growing your social media quickly. The journey can be SO different for everyone and can take a while, BUT there are CERTAINLY a few tips, tricks, and tweaks that you can use to get there faster. So let’s go on a voyage together and I’ll captain your social media ship (oh wait, I didn’t mean it to come out like that).

In this post, we’re going to use our extremely talented and deliciously personable mentee, Keyanna Bowen (@eastandlane on the ‘gram and her blog is eastandlane.com) as our example. You can check out her intro post here if you missed it. As our mentee, we’re here to guide her through the incredibly windy journey and painstakingly confusing journey of being a design blogger (her first design post in next week!), so we figured why not start with what oftentimes is your first impression to people: your social media.

We had a meeting about a month ago where I word vomited all of this information to Key via Zoom, and I’m sure it was nothing but wildly overwhelming. SO since we’re in the business of sharing way too much information (aka blogging), we thought why not share with you guys all the things we told her at that meeting. I’m sure Key won’t mind having a more concise, written out version either

Jess’ Dream Apartment Layout Nightmare- It’s A MOTO Ask The Audience Y’all

The moment I walked into this apartment my jaw dropped to the floor (full intro tour here). As I slowly picked it up I noticed that the living room was going to be a challenge to layout. But hey that was “future Jess'” problem. I ignored my future headache and ran to fill out the application and send my future landlord my firstborn. But now 1.5 months into living here and staring at these blank walls it’s time to get serious and design this sucker. This will not be another year and a half venture. I have some crazy ideas in my head that I’m both terrified and exhilarated by so I need to get to them before I overthink them to death. But first…

Welcome to my problem child. A room that needs to function as both a living room and a home office. Even Julie, after seeing the pictures of my layout options, was basically like, “good luck bud, I’m rooting for you”. She also told me to ask all of you wonderful people your opinion (which was my plan from this start) so here we are. Layout design agonies are some of our most popular posts because they are annoyingly relatable. Everyone has at least one room that they have a really hard time figuring out. This is FOR SURE mine. Let’s talk…

Below is the overhead layout so you can see what I’m working with. (P.S. I used SmartDraw to create this floor plan and it wasn’t too hard!)

She looks big but until she gets the “She’s All That” makeover, she’s real awkward. However unlike “She’s All That” it’s going to take more than simply removing her glasses for Freddie Prince Jr. to see this living room’s full potential (Also, really Freddie??).

Moving right along… I think the best way to make any decision for the world’s most indecisive person (me) we need a pros and cons list for each of the three layouts with some fun (and MESSY) pics. NOTE: My current desk in the real photos is a folding table that I will be replaced with a nice, larger desk eventually. That’s also why the desk looks bigger in all of the layouts:)

Option ONE – The “Up Against The Wall That For Some Reason Make Me Feel Less Like This An Adult’s Apartment”

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Exhibit C:

THE CONS

I know that title sounds real dumb but I can’t help it, it’s how I currently feel (subject to change). I guess that I had this “floating off the wall” sofa dream that felt really chic. But since there is only 2 feet of space between the wall and the left side of the fireplace (if you are looking at it) and my sofa is about 3 feet deep, it blocks too much of the fireplace. MY FIRST FIREPLACE as a grown a$$ woman. It looks wonky and it bums me out.

this overhead view makes the sofa/fireplace blocking look less intense. just remember that:)

Also if I wanted to add more seating across from the sofa, there would too many chairs on that side of the room since my desk chair would also be over there.

See what I mean?? Too cramped on that desk chair. I guess one could work…

This is intriguing but still not sold because of the fireplace issue.

THE PROS

So despite its “wonkiness”, I do like that I am looking at my pretty windows when sitting and that the space feels open overall. Okay. Could maybe have one accent chair. You don’t walk into the room and see the back of a sofa. More on that next…

Option TWO – The “Hey This Is The Back Of My Sofa But At Least It’s Centered To The Fireplace”

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Exhibit C:

CONS

Well as stated in the title I don’t love the when you walk into the space, you walk right into the back of the sofa. I don’t know much about Feng Shui (putting on my 2021 to-do list) but having the sofa here feels like I’m cutting the room off. Well… until I’m sitting on said sofa. It knocks out almost any chance of extra seating.I feel lukewarm about it but it’s getting warmer with time.

Here is the most likely layout because…

Adding a chair might crowd the desk area too much. Though I’m sitting with this configuration now and I think a small accent chair (smaller than in this graphic) cooould work.

PROS

Centers around the fireplaceI can sit on my sofa and not be forced to look at my desk (an attempt to turn off “work mode”) but can also easily turn and enjoy that side of the room. Wait. Idea. Should I get a little cabinet or box to easily and safely put away my monitor at night?? That way I can pretend my desk is a dining table. Hmmm I’ll look into it. The sofa I desperately want has a curved back so at least that will get its time in the sun showing off its behind. Plenty of room for my office area to breathe…. unless I add that chair;)

Option THREE – The “Too Much Furniture On One Side Of The Room Which Somehow Makes This Decently Sized Space Feel Cramped”

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Exhibit C:

CONS

To make the sofa not block the fireplace (the issue with it being on the wall) it really steps on the office area’s toes.I would be facing the wall and not the windows when sitting on the sofa. Bummer, right?I don’t love the sightline from the entrance of the living room to the windows. Too much furniture blocking happening. Would require me to probably choose a small desk (side eye emoji).Still doesn’t give enough space for extra seating. Would need to find or build a very slender media cabinet or shelving unit. But also Bunge Bench 2.0??

this graphic makes it look like there more space than there is. ugh.

PROS

It doesn’t awkwardly block the fireplace. You get a clear shot of the sofa when you walk into the room.

So if you can’t tell I’m leaning towards option 2 but again not in love with the idea. For fun this was Julie’s official response when I sent her all of the options:

“Man I don’t know haha, I like the original cause it gives a clear view of the windows and desk area when you walk into the space but it’s a little awkward with how much it overlaps the fireplace. The one with the sofa floating in front of the fireplace makes sense but feels like you can’t add any more seating and would you put a table behind the sofa or just walk into the back of it with nothing? And the last one functionally makes sense but completely blocks off that epic photo of a cool sculptural desk moment.”

So ya, no clear answer which is why I really would love your opinion (and I’m not planning on adding a “sofa table” because it would make the walkway too skinny). What is your vote? Am I missing something? I really want my desk in the turret because that’s where I spend most of my time and I refuse to put my desk in my bedroom. HELP. And thank you thank you.

Love you, mean it.

Happy New Year! What 2021 Has In Store – Both Personally And Here On This Blog…

I’m a big “goals” and “resolutions” person so typically this is my season, but this year I felt stumped until I started writing this. Of course, I’m going to do all the things to feel healthier after the unhealthy holiday binge stage (I’ll do ‘dry January’, workout to my favorite app, use my new sauna blanket, nourish my body through soup – JANSTEWARY IS ON, and maybe read something beyond addictive rom-com fiction). But those things feel silly and way too easy – it’s what I always do. I still want to “grow” and feel a sense of progress in a bigger way and that’s when I realized that 2020 shifted my perspective on “growth” – and this revelation has become the basis of my 2021 resolution. You see, I used to think growth meant doing more–more staff, more followers, higher numbers, more collaborations, more protocol, a big office, fancy monthly reports, more friend dates, more money, more social engagements, more “department heads” and me running around like a chicken with its head cut off doing 4-5 photoshoots a week, socializing too much only to mentally collapse twice a year (while trying to be a good partner and obsessively good parent). I was so proud of the business, of my ‘”success” and certainly I don’t regret the years of hard work that went into getting here, but what I’ve realized now is that there is truly a difference between being grateful for what you have, and being able to enjoy it.

The pandemic, quarantine, and the year of 2020 woke me up in a many ways – and I’m obviously not alone. It made me realize I had an addiction to being “busy” and being forced to stay home inadvertently saved me from myself, from what I call my “extrovert overextension disorder”. It also made me stop and be more thoughtful about the world, the planet, racial injustice, and my place in it all. OF COURSE, I wish this was not due to a world pandemic, but I have to, we all have to, respect what has happened enough to take a larger lesson from it and not just keep moving. First off, I had no idea how depleted I was until we moved up to the mountain house full time, and I was forced (and was lucky enough) to just stay home with my small family. It was a forced “busy detox”, where I learned that I don’t have to work 60 hours a week to “succeed” and “grow” and instead by slowing down I was able to see my impact on the world (both good and bad) and strengthen what matters to me–my marriage, my connection to my kids, and humanity. Like many of us, by slowing down I woke up. I know that even being able to make this shift, to slow down, comes from privilege, not to negate years of hard work and experience. I feel so grateful that I learned this in 2020 and not in another 10 years after checking myself into exhaustion rehab and missing being truly ‘present’ during my kids’ childhood. The best and most confusing part is that there was truly no way for me–for any of us–to learn these lessons without actually going through it. For me, business-wise I had to build it all up, sprint fast and crash for 10 + years just to learn that I want a different kind of growth. You think you know your capacities, boundaries, strengths, and weaknesses. Maybe you do want to grow an empire and become the next Martha Stewart, but also maybe you don’t. And that’s ok

The Link Up: Emily’s Favorite Everyday Puffer, Jess’s Productive Little Notepad, And The Face Sunscreen You Should Use All Winter

WELCOME TO 2021. We’re HAPPILY kissing 2020 goodbye, and are ready for a mental clean slate and frankly, for better news all around this year. A big THANK YOU to you guys for sticking around through it all. We’re so so happy you’re here. Now onto the first link up of 2021. Let’s go!

This week’s house tour is a gorgeous minimalist renovation by And And And Architecture Studio (remember this kitchen island!) and Studio LifeStyle. The arches in this space will melt your heart (some of which are in the form of LARGE metal windows that are no exception). It’s a design dream that has the perfect touch of cool California style. Check this one out, for sure.

From Emily: I found my go-to everyday cute and warm coat. I have a heavy parka (that red one) and I have fleeces but I didn’t have a big lightweight but WARM sleeping bag jacket that feels as light as air but is still SO WARM. And I love that it comes down to my calf so that I don’t have to wear crazy warm pants also (I can just wear with athleisure). It’s about 40 degrees up here and I can wear it with a long sleeve t-shirt, but it’s also forgiving enough to layer a sweatshirt underneath. And my girlfriends were very surprised at how flattering it is (the pockets are in the front, with zippers not on the side adding bulk). Right now it’s on sale for $79.99 (normally $129.99)

From Mallory: new year new face sunscreen!! Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put a HEALTHY dose of sunscreen on your face every day. AND BOY OH BOY DID I FIND A GOOD ONE. I’ve recommended Coola’s fragrance free face sunscreen on this blog before, but when I went to replenish my supply they only had cucumber, so I took a leap of faith and IT’S EVEN BETTER THAN FRAGRANCE FREE! I have VERY sensitive skin and this irritates it none. So grab yourself some Coola cucumber and enjoy your perfectly lightly spf’ed skin

11 Easy & Healthy Slow Cooker Meals Your Kids Will Love (We Hope)

I know that the world didn’t magically reset at 12:00 am on Jan 1st, wiping away all of our problems. But man does it feel good to say goodbye to 2020. So even though we are all likely still enjoying some holiday leftovers, we thought that reminding you of some super easy, affordable (and healthy) meals that the whole family will love to start off this “fresh” new year would be really helpful… and delicious. Why stress about cooking when there is literally zero need?? This is a post that we (mainly Sara) did a couple of years ago when I realized the actual magic of the crockpot. Remember the days when I could hardly chop an onion properly?? Guys, I’ve gotten so much better. Also after rereading this post, I feel like I’m reading about a totally different Emily. WILD.

So look at this post as your readymade shopping list and your crockpot as your cook, giving you optimal time to ease into January. O and don’t worry, tomorrow you will get a fresh link up and new and exciting posts starting Monday:) Have a great rest of your weekend xx

In my attempt to “mother my children,” it has come to my attention that food, three times a day in their mouths is crucial to their success. So like any good mom, I tasked one of my team members, Sara, to research fast, easy and affordable meals with as few ingredients as possible (to avoid waste) that I can throw in a slow cooker or pot before I go to work. She found a bunch on Pinterest and blogs that claimed this “mom fantasy” trio, but I wanted to test one out to ensure they indeed tasted good before passing off to you guys. In case you are under the wrong assumption that I just don’t like to cook, it’s more that it’s just not the best use of my time, and instead, hanging out with my kids after I get home from work while a dinner simmers produces a better night for all.

Easy Healthy Family Slowcooker Crockpot Meals Chicken Chili4

Here are the rules I gave Sara while researching:

1.) The ingredient list had to be small. No one wants to spend $60 at the grocery store buying 22 new ingredients for one recipe that will end up rotting in my fridge.

2.) The instructions had to be simple. Sara says my cooking level is “burnt grilled cheese” and history has proved this, but I’d like to remind her that I won MANY a blue ribbon in 4-H cooking in front of judges when I was 10. There is a specific person that can handle what I do at work and then have the brain space to execute a complicated meal with two small kids begging for attention and distracting me from the kitchen. I am not this person and that’s okay.

3.) They need to be healthy. I can make them a cheese quesadilla, what I need are more delicious recipes with vegetables.

4.) And finally, the recipes had to be meals that the whole family could eat—not kid specific but not adults-only either.

After researching for the Holy Grails of easy, minimal, healthy, kid-friendly meals, we’ve got 11 recipes for your cooking pleasure.

Today, we’re just focusing on meals you can make in a slow cooker (or Instant Pot if you’re cool, unlike me). Slow cookers/crockpots/Instant Pots are great for so many reasons, but the biggest one is the time they can save you (plus, who on earth wants to turn on their hot stove when it’s exactly 2,000 degrees outside?). You can dump everything in that thing before walking out the door and come home to a dinner that’s basically ready to serve. Slow cookers sound old fashioned, but they might just be heroes we need in our fast-paced, modern world.

The real question is, do these recipes work (as in, are they yummy, easy and kids will ACTUALLY want to eat them)? We were a little skeptical. So, I picked a recipe that sounded tasty and we took it for a test drive in my kitchen. Friends, it was so easy and so delicious.

Easy Healthy Family Slowcooker Crockpot Meals Chicken Chili1

We decided to try out a recipe for White Chicken Chili from food blog Gimme Some Oven. It only called for five essential ingredients—chicken breasts, chicken stock, canned great northern beans, salsa verde, and ground cumin. Sara picked up all these ingredients at the Trader Joe’s around the corner from our house on her way over and spent about $30 getting enough for two batches. I also grabbed sour cream, shredded cheese, avocados, cilantro, tomatoes, lime and chopped onion as garnish options.

Chickin Chili

The method of attack was this: Pull out the slow cooker, place the raw chicken breasts at the bottom of the pot, pour over the salsa, chicken broth, and cumin, then cover and let cook for 3 1/2 hours on high OR 8 1/2 hours on low (check out the recipe for all the right amounts, etc.). When your timer goes off, add in your canned beans (drained), and let cook for another 30 minutes on low (the perfect amount of time to set the dinner table, pull out the garnishes, and wrangle toddlers). Did it work? Yes. Was it delicious? YES. Any notes? We found the recipe called for a little more liquid in our chili than we would have liked, so we’d recommend omitting 1 to 2 cups of chicken stock for a thicker chili. There’s no dairy or sugar in this recipe, and you can top bowls with extra vegs like diced onion or avocado.

Easy Healthy Family Slowcooker Crockpot Meals Chicken Chili9

Most importantly, it was 2-year-old approved by Birdie herself. The recipe checked all the boxes. But watch stories for her real reaction (the first thing she said was “what are these?” to the cherry tomatoes and when I reminded her what they were, she said, “oh, I DO NOT LIKE TOMATOES.” We’ve had this conversation so many times, by the way. Cherry tomatoes are deceptive. I get it.

Now, we haven’t tried the rest of the recipes in this post, but they all sound as simple and delicious as the chicken chili. We went ahead and mentioned the ingredient number for each, in case that’s super important for your time/budget.

Sara took over writing the rest of this post because she did the research and cares far more about food writing than I do. So, here are the other 10 easy, fast, affordable and healthy recipes she found for you.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals 3 Ingredient Mexican Shredded Chicken Recipe 5

3 / Shredded Chicken (also via Gimmie Some Oven

Wait, THREE ingredients?! All we’re talking about in this recipe is uncooked chicken breasts, one can of salsa, and one packet of taco seasoning (Trader Joe’s has a GREAT taco seasoning packet, FYI). Let it all simmer in your slow cooker for 6 to 8 hours on low (3 to 4 on high), and then use two forks to get that chicken shredded. This would be great for tacos, in a burrito bowl, or on top of a salad with fresh corn and black beans.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals 5 Ingredient Crockpot Pork Roast And Potatoes 6

5 / Pork Pot Roast (via SweetPhi

This dish is going to make you look so much fancier and put together than you actually are (this is a broad generalization—disregard if you are currently very fancy and put together). All you’re going to need is uncooked pork roast, potatoes, garlic salt, an Italian seasoning packet, and chicken broth. Imagine all the added veggie options you could sneak in here. Carrots would be my first choice, but green beans, pearl onions, turnips, sweet potatoes, or cabbage would all do well. A chuck of beef would also do well with this same treatment (though I might omit the chicken stock and use a bit of water and cornstarch instead, like in this Tasty video).

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Slow Cooker Beef Broccoli 5

9 / Beef & Broccoli (via Creme de la Crumb)

Okay, so this recipe technically calls for nine ingredients, BUT I almost guarantee you that you probably have at least four of them sitting in your pantry and fridge. A bottle of soy sauce that’s rarely used? That box of cornstarch from a past science experiment that’s sat untouched in the back of your pantry? They’re about to become useful again. Eat it over brown rice or straight out of the crockpot, all at once, by yourself. Your family can fend for themselves.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Turkey Slaw Wraps

5 / Turkey Wraps (via Better Homes & Gardens)

If there’s one thing I know about Brian Henderson, it’s that he loves a wrap almost as much as sandwiches. This recipe combines tender shredded turkey with healthy broccoli-and-carrot slaw to create a super easy wrap that could work for dinner with leftovers for lunch. To be fair, this recipe does call for a pre-bottled sauce but that’s kind of the beauty of these easy recipes. Turning something pre-packaged into an actual meal with minimal effort. And if you’ve never bought broccoli-and-carrot slaw before, you can find it in the salad aisle of most grocery stores these days.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Tortellini Spinach Soup 2 Final

8 / Crock Pot Tortellini & Spinach Soup (via Lil’ Luna)

This is another recipe that leans on a pre-packaged item to round it out. Just seasonings, a bag of spinach, chicken broth, canned tomatoes, and a package of chef’s choice tortellini (the chef being you). The recipe calls for a block of cream cheese as well, but while that sounds SO GOOD, I’m sure it can be omitted in the name of “health” or something. Make it vegetarian by using vegetable stock instead of chicken stock!

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Slow Cooker Whole Chicken Ohsweetbasil.com 2

1 (ish) / Slow Cooker Whole Chicken (via Oh Sweet Basil)

One of my favorite meals growing up was when my parents would get a rotisserie chicken and just make some mac and cheese or rice and microwave some frozen veggies to go along with it. This is also how I survived through a lot of finals during college. Plus, leftover chicken is easily used in wraps, sandwiches, salads, or soups. This recipe looks absolutely fool-proof and delicious.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Instant Pot Vegetarian Black Bean Chili Recipe 1

8 / Black Bean Chili (via Gimme Some Oven)

I’m guessing at least a handful of you are vegetarians out there, so this recipe is for you. There are eight main ingredients, but most of them come in a can, jar, or can be bought pre-chopped. Just dump everything into the crockpot for 8 hours and serve topped with sour cream, avocado, cheese, or cilantro for a protein-rich vegetarian chili.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Chicken Noodle Soup

10 / Chicken Noodle Soup (via The Spruce Eats)

Everyone needs a good chicken noodle soup recipe in their arsenal. Mine comes from my best friend’s grandmother in Kansas and involves homemaking egg noodles that need to rest before cooking, and slowly sautéing chicken and veggies in a bath of butter and garlic. It’s decadent, it’s delicious, it requires a lot of effort. We don’t have time for that. So instead, we’re going to rely on dry, packaged egg noodles to get the job done. Looking at the ingredient list, you might think “Uh, Sara this list is LONG and you are a liar,” to which I say Trader Joe’s sells this thing called mirepoix mix, which is a container with pre-chopped carrots, celery, and onion all in one. Buy that and send me cookies as a thank you (I like chocolate chip, thanks). This could also be made vegetarian by using vegetable stock and omitting the chicken.

6 / Broccoli Mac & Cheese (via Eat Good 4 Life)

Okay, so this one might cater to kids a little. But sometimes everyone just needs a bowl of mac and cheese (don’t act like you’re above this). And at least with this recipe, you could source a good quality cheddar cheese and sneak in some broccoli. Oh, and this recipe only calls for six main ingredients. Don’t have a food processor or the will to drag it down from whatever shelf it’s hibernating on? A blender or knife can do a similar job on those broccoli florets.

Easy Kid Friendly Slow Cooker Meals Garlic Butter Chicken And Veggies 1

7 / Garlic Butter Chicken and Veggies (via The Magical Slow Cooker)

You can’t really go wrong with chicken, carrots, and potatoes covered in an herby butter. And I would probably sneak some extra vegs in here in the form of green beans. Just dump your chicken and veggies in the pot, melt your butter in the microwave, mix in your herbs, and drizzle that mixture over everything. Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8. Watch your family eat and feel accomplished.

Easy Healthy Family Slowcooker Crockpot Meals Chicken Chili11

Well, that’s all we have for you today. We’ve got a few more posts on the back burner if you guys are into them (see what I did there? That was a subpar cooking pun, just for you). Think one-pan sheet meals, easy salads, and quick stovetop dinners. And if you have any favorite slow cooker meals or tips, let us know in the comments!

If you try any of these, please come back and let us all know how they turned out. I know some of team EHD was talking about testing more of these out themselves, so wish us luck.

Top 10 Pins of 2020 + An Unexpected Trend Comes In 1st Place…

Kitchens and living rooms are always highly pinned, so it’s very telling to see some offices (and even some artwork!!) in the top 10. Actually, offices haven’t ever been on the list until this year. Clearly, it’s because we were all thrown into our homes and now we can’t or don’t want to leave them. We needed (and still need) to maximize FUNCTIONALITY above all else, and it’s really the time to see just how functional your home can get. But don’t worry it’s not all offices but number one might completely shock you like it shocked me… HERE WE GO!

10. From: Recognizing Juneteenth (Plus, Resources To Learn More & Take Action)

artwork by melissa koby

I’m SO glad Melissa Koby‘s awesome artwork made it in the top 10! Now someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think any artwork has made it into our top pinned before (probably because people mostly come here to look at pretty pictures of interiors –– we get it and we’re here for that sometimes too). But anyway, if you don’t follow her on Instagram yet, it’s most definitely time to get on that…her artwork is TOO GOOD.

9. From: Have An Unused Nook Begging For Some Attention?? Make It A Beautiful At Home Office

design and photography by tiffany of pretty real

2020 was truly the year of the at-home office…and an impromptu one at that. No one could’ve called that WFH was going to be such a motif in 2020, and many of you (like us) might now be going back. So probably similar to Emily, we started with tables on paint cans but now we’re looking at creating more permanent workstations in our home. This one, created by Tiffany from Pretty Real Blog, is one of my all-time favorites because she took an unused wall/nook area and built this crazy cool shelf and desk situation. The best part is it creates more than one work area so her kids can simultaneously do homework here, which is a plus with everyone being at home. No surprise why it was a popular image.

All The Room Makeovers We Revealed This Year (You Won’t Believe How Many There Are..)

Looking back at this year is disorienting to say the least. Where did the time go?? I know we say that every year, but this one I am quite sure wins and definitely proves that “time flies when you are in the middle of a global pandemic”. Oh well, that’s life I guess, and I am pretty ready to say goodbye to 2020 but not before I look back on EVERY room we revealed this year.

Despite a pandemic that delayed and/or stopped production on many projects, we still managed to post 41 REVEALS this year. It’s actually pretty wild and some of the reveals I am about to show you feel like a lifetime ago. I am beyond excited to talk about every one of these rooms so with that said, let’s get to it:

Makeover Takeover: Julie’s HUGE (and DIY packed) Bedroom Upgrade

design by julie rose for ehd | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: makeover takeover: julie’s hige (and diy packed) bedroom upgrade

Julie’s bedroom reveal kicked off the year (this was even published pre lockdown if you can believe it–remember those times??). This makeover is packed with fairly easy DIY’s including an awesome art DIY and encapsulates Julie’s calming, nature-inspired style and personality. It’s such a serene space with so much warmth and soul.

Our Bedroom Update (Also How I Feel About Having A TV In The Bedroom)

photo by veronica crawford | from: our bedroom update (also how i feel about having a tv in the bedroom)

In this bedroom refresh, Emily played around with new bedding, decor, and art PLUS revealed a controversial design decision: she put a TV in her bedroom. Definitely head to the comments section to see how everyone reacted to this bold move + read Em’s thoughts on why she made the switch. Okay, once you are done with the ~drama~ please note how good that bedding combo is!! I’ve always loved that blanket which brings just enough pattern and boldness to the space, while still keeping it calm and cohesive.

It’s Time For Warmer, Pastel Inspired Gatherings with Target’s New Spring Collection

Oh how I love a patio reveal. This one makes me want to jump through the screen and hang out with the lovely people in this shoot again but me being starved for human interaction aside, this pastel tablescape SENDS ME. It’s gorgeous and a real treat for my eyeballs.

I remember anxiously awaiting this reveal. Sara and I have a similar living/dining room layout so I couldn’t wait to see how she and Velinda executed it. Of course, Velinda killed it and it’s actually one of my favorite reveals of this year. I love how she created a break between the two sections by using two armchairs facing the sofa, and the dining room table and chairs are to die for. Also, the color palette they went with makes the space feel so inviting and warm. I’m a huge fan.

How To Make Your Smallest Room, The Coziest Room In Your Home + Sara’s TV Room Reveal

design by velinda hellen design | photos by sara ligorria-tramp | from: how to make your smallest room, the coziest room in your home + sara’s tv room reveal

I have a serious love affair with dark and moody paint colors, so of course, I love this room. It probably subconsciously inspired my living room paint color decision that I am obsessed with, so for that I am forever grateful. Again, EHD alum Velinda designed this room which had a few design agonies/hurdles to overcome. But of course she nailed it and even designed a killer built-in shelf/media cabinet section that you must see.

A Little One’s Mid-Century Magical Bedroom Reveal

design by julie rose for ehd | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: a little one’s mid-century magical bedroom reveal

This bedroom is pure magic and there are so many exciting things to talk about here. I mean, can you believe that bedframe?? Or the mural wallpaper?? Or that PENDANT??? This is truly a fairytale bedroom for a little one and Julie did an incredible job designing it and bringing a 5-year-old’s vision to life:).

Grab A Drink And Come Explore This EHD Stylist Alum’s Treasure Filled Living Room Reveal

design by erik kenneth staalberg | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: grab a drink and come explore this ehd stylist alum’s treasure filled living room reveal

I’d be shocked to find anyone who doesn’t enjoy Erik’s unique style and voice. This living room reveal actually inspired me in a lot of ways to simply go for it, take risks, and lean into my design instincts in my own home. I love the colors and all of the vintage items he’s collected over the years makes this room so special. It has so much soul and life and looking at these photos just reminds me of Erik’s incredible spirit and brings me so much joy.

The Pink Dining Room Erik Designed BEFORE He Found His Apartment

design by erik kenneth staalberg | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: the pink dining room erik designed before he found his apartment

This is, of course, Erik’s dining room. No surprise there! It’s honestly so dreamy and glamourous, just like he is, and it makes a STRONG case for pink walls. Everything about it goes to show how talented and fearless he is, especially since he had been sitting on the vision for this room before he even moved into the apartment. Trust me when I say, you must give this room another look because it’s gorgeous and so, so fun.

Living Room Update – AGAIN – Our New Sofa, My Dream Floral Chaise And The Pop Of Red I Always Wanted In My Life

design by emily henderson | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: living room update – again – our new sofa, my dream floral chaise and the pop of red i always wanted in my life

If you’ve been around here for a while, then you’ve certainly seen many iterations of Emily’s LA living room. It’s one of those rooms that she never felt looked “finished”, which goes to show that design discontentment can happen to anyone! This version involves a stunning floral chaise, new decor, and much-needed pop of red. It’s a real treat and reading about Emily’s design process is always so educational and exciting.

How To Build A Backyard Lounge From Scratch For Less Than $1,000

design and photo by mallory wackerman | from: how to build a backyard lounge from scratch for less than $1,000

This little diddy happens to be Mallory’s design AND photography debut on the blog. It’s a little backyard oasis that she designed and styled for her boyfriend’s parents backyard which beforehand was bare and never used. She managed to make a space for them to actually use and enjoy AND kept her budget under $1,000. SHE’S A STAR, PEOPLE.

REVEAL: Our Boy/Girl, 2-Twin Bed Shared Kids Room… With A HEAVY Dose Of Mama Drama

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: reveal: our boy/girl, 2-twin bed shared kids room… with a heavy dose of mama drama

When Emily’s kids, Charlie and Elliot, decided they wanted to share a room, Emily began envisioning what their boy/girl room would look like. Designing a boy/girl bedroom is not for the faint of heart and I know Emily went through a TON of trial and errors while designing this room. But of course she ultimately ended up with a room with so many fun patterns, colors, and a ton of charm. It’s such a cool bedroom that I think any kid would love.

Styling To Sell: How We Staged Our Dining Room And Kitchen (With The Changes I Should Have Done Years Ago!)

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: styling to sell: how we staged our dining room and kitchen (with the changes i should have done years ago!)

There is definitely a science to styling a house to sell and if you are like Emily, you might make changes that you wish you’d have done YEARS ago and fall in love all over again. (HOT TIP: pretend you are moving, style your home to sell, and then DON’T MOVE.) Anyway, this is Emily’s favorite version of her kitchen and dining room and I can totally see why. Like, oh man, those chairs. Who could not love those chairs??

Styled To Sell: Elliot’s “Bedroom” That No One Has Actually Slept In, But It’s Still Pretty Darn Dreamy…

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: styled to sell: elliot’s “bedroom” that no one has actually slept in, but it’s still pretty darn dreamy…

As you just saw above, Emily’s kids desperately wanted to share a bedroom which left Elliot’s room unattended. It was a makeshift office for a while, but in order to sell, Emily made it into a gorgeous pink filled guest room (that no one actually slept in..ha). This version of the room really accentuates the wall to wall windows and makes this room feel peaceful, which is perfect for a guest room. And who doesn’t love that wallpaper??

Styling to Sell – The FINAL Entry Reveal (That’s Real Estate Agent Approved)

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: styling to sell – the final entry reveal (that’s real estate agent approved)

This entryway design came to be when Emily’s real estate agent asked, “Can you make the entry any lighter and brighter?” and of course Emily was like, “YES”. That rug is so perfectly bright and vintage and the dresser fits like a glove on the wall. I’d definitely fall for this home if this is the first thing I saw.

My Secret Front Yard Is Finally Revealed

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: my secret front yard is finally revealed

You all had never seen Emily’s front yard before because, well, that’d be kind of creepy to know exactly where she lives. So for obvious she kept this a secret until they knew for sure they were moving. But I am so glad you can see how beautiful it is now! It truly looks like a fairytale cottage and might be my favorite part of her LA home.

Our Secret Closet Turned Play Nook

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: our secret closet turned play nook

This play nook is almost too cute. This was another reveal that stemmed from the styling to sell series and as it is actually a hall closet, it was actually used for storage purposes when they lived there. But imagine if it could stay a play nook?? That’d be so fun for a little one to play in and the slanted ceiling makes it all the more whimsical.

Styling To Sell: The Playroom/Family Room And The 4 Lessons I Learned Along The Way…

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: styling to sell: the playroom/family room and the 4 lessons i learned along the way…

This is another room that has gone through many iterations over the years. That wall mural is so cute for a playroom obviously, but with that Article sofa and ottoman, it actually translates well into a family room space, too. The green sofa also keeps the room bright and fun but really, this room could be almost anything (which I think is why Emily played around with it so much :)).

Our Guest Room/Office Basement Suite Reveal … + How To Make A Basement (Office) Feel Warm, Happy And Functional

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: our guest room/office basement suite reveal … + how to make a basement (office) feel warm, happy and functional

This is the only “room” in Emily’s LA home that never made it’s way to the blog before. The basement was originally going to be an office space, but in order to style it to sell, Emily ended up making it into a guest room/office suite. It turned out SO GOOD and I’d gladly live here.

Budget Basement Bathroom – The One Where We Tried To Not Spend Money… (And Now You Know Why)

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: budget basement bathroom – the one where we tried to not spend money… (and now you know why)

This bathroom also had never appeared on the blog before because Emily had been working on designing it for 2+ years but it kept being pushed down the priority list. When it finally came down to it, she wanted to make it as budget-friendly as possible because well, they would be moving anyway. It turned out GREAT and really rounds out the guest room/office suite.

A Mid-Century Eclectic Living Room with Kilz Primer and Paint – The Dark Room Problem SOLVED

design by julie rose for ehd | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | a mid-century eclectic living room with kilz primer and paint – the dark room problem solved

Oh man, this reveal was probably one of my favorites of the year. It’s masculine yet polished, and just also extremely “grown up”. I really love the warm tones and pops of brass that make it inviting but sophisticated. Julie really knocked this one outta the park.

Malcolm’s Deck Reveal: How He Created A Year-Round Outdoor Space

design and photo by malcolm simmons  | from: malcolm’s deck reveal: how he created a year-round outdoor space

This was our first contributor reveal of the year, designed and written by the absolutely lovely and talented Malcolm Simmons. The design stemmed from his brilliant brain and vision to make it a semi-private year round space and it’s GOLD.

One of Emily’s Best Friends Gets The Cozy Yet Sophisticated Bedroom Makeover She Really Deserves

design by julie rose for ehd | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: one of emily’s best friends gets the cozy yet sophisticated bedroom makeover she really deserves

Now that I am ALMOST finished with my living/dining room makeover (expect a reveal in early 2021!!) I am now slowly moving my attention to my bedroom. This one Julie designed for Em’s best friend Suzanne is so dreamy and I will no doubt be referencing it once my bedroom design is underway.

How To Design Your Bedroom For The Best Night SLEEP (+ Introducing Target’s New Casaluna Line)

design by emily bowser for ehd | from: how to design your bedroom for the best night sleep (+ introducing target’s new casaluna line)

Ok, so this is a half reveal. Is this Sara’s primary bedroom? Yes. But was this her design and how it will look forever and ever? No. Sara let us use her bedroom to work some Target magic (which Bowser performed). So even though it’s kind of a ‘fake’ reveal, it’s still beautiful and deserves to be included.

How Ajai Transformed Her Parent’s Dark And Cluttered Living Room Into Their Dream Minimalist Mid-Century Glam Oasis

design and photo by ajai guyot | from: how ajai transformed her parent’s dark and cluttered living room into their dream minimalist mid-century glam oasis

I loved reading the story behind this room reveal. Ajai wanted to give her mom a comfortable and serene, and not at all dark hang out area since Ajai and her husband moved into the aforementioned “girl cave”. Again, the before and afters are NUTS and it is so satisfying to see the transformation.

Ajai’s Back (With Some Big News!) + How To Make An Apartment Bedroom (Quickly) Feel Like Home

design and photo by ajai guyot | from: Ajai’s Back (With Some Big News!) + How To Make An Apartment Bedroom (Quickly) Feel Like Home

In a sudden turn of events (pregnancy-related), Ajai and her husband moved into their own apartment but she wanted to create a beautiful and warm bedroom before her baby arrived. She designed her rental bedroom in record time and it’s SO good.

MOTO REVEAL: Julie’s Anything But Beige, Amazing DIY Bathroom Refresh

design by julie rose for ehd | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: julie’s anything but beige, amazing diy bathroom refresh

Our DIY queen Julie Rose does it again. Her rental bathroom was dreary, lacked personality and color. So she DIYed and styled it and transformed it into anything but boring. She actually HAND-PAINTED the walls to bring in some character and color. If I ever get to my bathroom makeover (ha), I will be revisiting this post for sure.

Sara’s Haunted (But Happy) Halloween House with Affordable New and Vintage Finds

design and photo by sara ligorria-tramp for ehd | from: sara’s haunted (but happy) halloween house with affordable new and vintage finds

Okay, mark my words, 2020 is the last year I don’t decorate for Halloween inside my home. Sara managed to decorate her home in such a cool and elevated way AND a lot of the decor are vintage from Ebay. The bats along the wall absolutely kill me and now I am team black cobwebs forever. It’s too good!

Sara’s Closet Reveal – The Bold Design Moment She’s Been Craving

design and photo by sara ligorria-tramp for ehd | from: sara’s closet reveal – the bold design moment she’s been craving

This is what closet dreams are made of, and folks if you want to go bold in your home but not sure where to start, a closet is a great place to try it out! Sara loves the way hers turned out and it satisfied the bold moment she was craving.

design by velinda hellen design | styling by emily bowser | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | velinda’s first freelance client reveal: molding the ‘builder-grade budget’ + where they saved & splurged

Velinda’s first freelance client makeover completely blew us away (no surprise there) and this post is FULL of expert advice on where to splurge and where to save when you are working with a builder-grade budget.

Velinda’s First Freelance Client Reveal Part II: Her 7 Expert Tips On Mixing A LOT Of The Styles

design by velinda hellen design | styling by emily bowser | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: velinda’s first freelance client reveal part II: her 7 expert tips on mixing a lot of the styles

I LOVE BOTH OF THESE ROOMS SO MUCH. Velinda nailed mixing a myriad of styles while making the spaces feel cohesive and special. I can’t get enough of that gallery wall and love how everything feels so bright, comfortable, and happy in both rooms.

A Refresh Of Our Favorite “Child Client’s” – Bedroom 8 Years Later

design by julie rose for ehd | photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: a refresh of our favorite “child client’s” – bedroom 8 years later

OH MY. Can you imagine having this bedroom as a teenager? I love the very elegant and Parisian vibe happening here and that bed frame is STUNNING. I want to be this room when I grow up! Plus it’s a project very close to our hearts since Emily designed it the first time 8 years ago!

Our Scandinavian (And Easy, Mess-Free) Holiday Living Room Reveal + How I Finally Figured Out My Biggest Styling Problem… And Solved It

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: our scandinavian (and easy, mess-free) holiday living room reveal + how i finally figured out my biggest styling problem… and solved it

The mountain house living room never misses, and it’s basically the most ideal canvas for holiday decorating. It screams elevated cozy cabin so a Christmas tree and twinkling lights just add to the whimsy and coziness already present in the space.

Emily’s “Messy” But FULL Of Memories Christmas Family Room

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: emily’s “messy” but full of memories christmas family room

This Christmas reveal is so fun and happy. I love that they decorated this tree with homemade and personal ornaments so it’s more cheerful and carefree. Head over to see how she transformed it into a family-friendly Christmas wonderland and see the most adorable family in matching plaid pj’s :).

How Sara Created Her First Traditional But Youthful Christmas (With All Target)

design and photo by sara ligorria-tramp for ehd | from: how sara created her first traditional but youthful christmas (with all target)

Okayyyyy Sara did some serious Christmas decorating this year and I am obsessed. She did an excellent job making this space feel elevated but not boring or stuffy. It’s youthful and bright and would be a perfect space to throw a holiday party if that was a thing (RIP all the 2020 holiday parties that never came to be..better luck next year right?).

Sara & Mac’s Office/Guest Room Reveal – LOTS Of Function + Even More Color and Style

design and photo by sara ligorria-tramp for ehd | from: sara & mac’s office/guest room reveal – lots of function + even more color and style

I love how Sara created this dual home office/guest room space for her and her fiancé Mac. They managed to make this feel like a space you can be productive in AND totally relax in. Plus, the paint color is everything and makes this room pop in the best way.

design by albie k. buabeng | photo by ellie lillstrom | from: what happens when you design your living room and then move?? you make it work… albie’s new living room round one!

In this post another lovely contributor, Albie, answers the age old question “What Happens When You Design Your Living Room and Then MOVE??”. The answer is, simply, you make it work but you must head over to see how she worked with what she had and made it a stunner. It’s bright and happy and we can’t wait for the official reveal when she’s able to do the big upgrades:)

Lea Johnson’s Basement Reveal: Workspace by Day and Family-Friendly Living Room by Night

design by lea johnson | photo by sage e imagery | from: lea johnson’s basement reveal: workspace by day and family-friendly living room by night

I am head over heels for this room. Lea did an amazing job transforming her basement. into a space that can be used for multiple purposes (work, fight night, etc.). I love a wall to wall bookcase filled with books as it makes them space feel extra cozy and lived in. That sectional is also INCREDIBLE and brings in the perfect amount of color and life to the space.

Orlando’s Totally Creative “Great For Now” DIY Guest Room – The FIRST Londo Lodge Reveal

design and photo by orlando soria | from: orlando’s totally creative “great for now” diy guest room – the first londo lodge reveal

We couldn’t end the year without an Orlando reveal. Duh. This bedroom reveal is from his NEW home (rightfully named Lando Lodge) that he designed for when his parents stay. He has plans to renovate but in the meantime he wanted to create a space that felt beautiful and comfortable so this is what he came up that is a perfect and totally unique “for now” space.

Shavonda’s Feel Good Makeover #1 – The Twin’s Room (Pure Joy ALERT)

design by shavonda gardner and emily henderson | photos by lisa and gary ashley | from: shavonda’s feel good makeover #1 – the twin’s room (pure joy alert)

This feel good makeover with Target and Shavonda Gardner was definitely our favorite project of the entire year. Emily and Shavonda co-designed three Christmas bedroom makeovers for Shavonda’s niece and nephews over zoom and then the plan was to safely install and shoot the project together. Then there was a huge spike in Covid cases so it no longer felt safe or responsible to travel or work on a project indoors with 10+ people. SO, Shavonda did the bulk of this makeover on her own and it turned out SO. GOOD. and looking at the happiness on these kid’s faces is absolutely priceless.

Shavonda Feel Good Makeover #2 – Devin’s Star Wars Themed Bedroom

design by shavonda gardner and emily henderson | photos by lisa and gary ashley | from: shavonda feel good makeover #2 – devin’s star wars themed bedroom

Here is the second Target x Shavonda x EHD kids bedroom reveal that is Star Wars Christmas themed. How cool is that?? The wallpaper is honestly a game changer and I loved how they brought in the decorations but you can still see how awesome the room will be post-holiday season.

Our Last Feel Good Bedroom Makeover This Year – A (Pre) Teen Jewel Box Of A Room

design by shavonda gardner and emily henderson | photos by lisa and gary ashley | from: our last feel good bedroom makeover this year – a (pre) teen jewel box of a room

Last but not least, this pre-teen colorful and bright winter wonderland-esque bedroom reveal is so special. I love how it came together and am so impressed with how they were able to combine Ariyah, Shavonda’s niece’s, favorite color (neon yellow) with bright blues and teals and A SILVER TREE. It’s such a fun room and 12-year-old Ryann is a little jealous.

Whew, if you’ve made it this far, thank you for joining and walking down memory lane with me. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, and just for fun, I’d love to know what your favorite reveal is. I’ll see you next year. xx

Because It’s Fun And SO Interesting – The Top 25 Most Purchased Items Of 2020

On the first Thursday of every month, I sit the team down and run them through the past month’s revenue. We start with advertising (basically how much each post was worth, the standouts, the flops, etc.) and continue on to partnerships (who’s helping us reveal more rooms!), but the REALLY fun part that we all look forward to the most is our product breakdown. (We also look forward to cheers-ing together, because the revenue meeting is also our monthly happy hour. Not to throw shade on anyone else’s meetings, but I lucked out with this time slot. We have a BLAST.)

I kind of feel like a drama teacher putting up a cast list when I reveal the month’s top sellers – each person is credited for their picks and as we go through, item by item, there are LOTS of “yays!!!” and “great pick!!!” and “you have such good taste!!!” circling in the zoom. If this sounds very tender, it’s because IT IS

The Top 10 Posts That You All Read The Heck Out Of This Year

There are all sorts of metrics and data that we have for every post but what we care most about is the fact that you all dedicated time to read all the way through (THANK YOU) – and this we can tell by average ‘time on site’. It’s like an artist selling a painting or a furniture maker selling a chair – these words are our ‘product’ and when they actually get read, we feel really really good. So these are the top ten ‘longest time on site’ posts which is different than most highly trafficked or even ‘popular’. These have nothing to do with google or any algorithm – just good old fashioned ‘reading’ and almost all of these are very personal. In many ways some of these are our favorite posts of the year.

10. The True Cost Of Moving Into A New Neighborhood, Sorry I Mean Gentrification . . .

graphic by sara ligorria-tramp | from: the true cost of moving into a new neighborhood, sorry i mean gentrification . . .

I LOVED Sara’s honest post about her buying her home in a gentrifying neighborhood (and what you can do to not be part of the problem while still trying to get into the market with your first home).

9. Our Guest Room/Office Basement Suite Reveal … + How To Make A Basement (Office) Feel Warm, Happy And Functional

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: our guest room/office basement suite reveal … + how to make a basement (office) feel warm, happy and functional

Basements HIT this year – especially office/guest room basements for obvious reasons. I loved how ours turned out, after 3 years of living with it as a storage room we styled it right (just to sell it). OH and the house is going BACK on the market in January (we wanted to do some repairs that came up in inspections during both escrows). So if you know anyone…

I’m so glad you guys loved our kids room – I LOVE it even though the kids have never actually slept in it. We are taking all of that to Oregon (even though now that I think of it we’ll likely do full beds in their non-shared rooms…).

7. The Hendersons Are Homeschooling… On Our Own (Here’s The “Plan” Or What We Really Hope Will Happen)

photo by brain henderson | from: the hendersons are homeschooling… on our own (here’s the “plan” or what we really hope will happen)

I’m a little surprised about this, but at the same time as a pandemic mom, I would read the crap out of someone else’s home school situation. An update: we found part time childcare 9 am – 12/1 pm a few times a week and she is GREAT with having them do reading/writing/math in the morning then Brian and I share afternoons with them for cooking class, PE, and lots of nature. Some weeks are fine, some aren’t but we know that so many other parents with less flexibility/privilege are struggling so hard so there is no complaining from me (publicly anyway). We are VERY excited for in person school to start in the fall.

6. Like Most Guys, I Didn’t Want To Go To Therapy. I Did, And It Saved My Marriage.

photo by veronica crawford | from: like most guys, i didn’t want to go to therapy. i did, and it saved my marriage.

That man is the best and this year he’s just gotten more and more open. He’s made it his own personal goal to normalize guys going to therapy with all our friends and his family by just talking so openly and frequently about it.

photo by brian henderson | from: all the “hows”, “whys” and “how much’s” of the turf at the mountain house + introducing my landscape designer – brian henderson

I had no idea that you guys would love reading about turf so much! Update – we love it and I just wish I had done it around the now hot tub and made the fire pit area smaller, but oh well
