In this Brave New Publishing World, Marketing Vital

Recently there was a discussion regarding the grass-roots revolution in publishing on a Yahoo group to which I subscribe. Don McCauley, founder of Free Publicity Focus Group (http://www.freepublicitygroup.com) and host of The Authors Show Radio (http://wwwtheauthorsshow.com) made the following comment. I reprint it here with Don's permission.

Imagine you own a hardware store. In the state in which you are located there are 200 MILLION other hardware stores. What would you do?

Now imagine that in

Alternative Marketing for Indie Publishers

Sometime last year I signed on with Goodreads (www.goodreads.com), a virtual book club where people fill shelves with virtual books and more often than not rate and write reviews. These are not critically acclaimed reviews, and are often disparaged by legacy publishers and authors. To my view, however, the forum Goodreads provides, and the reader reviews posted there, are a grassroots, honest response from the people who count the most in the literary world, besides the authors, and that is the

Prologue: From Mountains of Ice

By way of introduction of my new cultural fantasy novel, From Mountains of Ice, and to celebrate my 54th birthday, I'm offering here the prologue for your pleasure.

He tried very hard to remain still, to be strong, project the image of the Royal Prince he was. That scream in his throat had a life of its own. He wanted to set it free, let it encompass the room.

How could she?

He allowed himself to scan the chamber – the afternoon sunlight so heavy where it poured through the open terrace door, the

Catching Up

After almost two weeks of silence from me -- my apologies -- I finally have a sane moment to update the blog.

Technology Trials

As in trial by frustration, not testing new products.

The first week of July I experienced some rather disconcerting imaging and monitor problems that would have the monitor pixelate, freeze and thereby blocking any interface with the computer. The problem would only resolve by doing a hard restart of the computer. Two phonecalls to Support.com garnered not much differen

From Mountains of Ice Now Available

I'm thrilled to announce the release of my new cultural fantasy novel, From Mountains of Ice.

Back cover blurb: Sylvio spent the past decade banished from Simare's court, stripped of land, ancestral home and title - from Minister of National Security to back-country bowyer. But not any bowyer; Sylvio creates bows from laminations of wood and human bone, bows that are said to speak, bows known as the legendary arcossi.

And now, after a decade, he is called back to the capitol, summoned by his Prin

Real Publishers

Recently a discussion came up among fellow writers about the legitimacy of self-publishing versus legacy publishers. Some of the comments from my colleagues left me, frankly, startled. One writer commented that he had, 'a deep-seated distrust of all things that smack of self-publishing,' while another writer commented that '..."real" publishers regard themselves as such, and they regard everything from literary presses with two books a year down through small press, ebooks and self-publishing a
