Yesterday's Book Signing

It would appear I had stiff competition for yesterday's book signing at Indigo in Burlington, in the form of the first glorious spring day in Ontario. In fact, it was positively summery out there, and people opted to stay 'out there' rather than return to concrete and glass as they have all winter. Staff, who normally would have been kept quite busy, found time to tidy, dust, chat, and I sat there making notes for the next novel (after From Mountains of Ice).

About seven books sailed out the doo

Preview: From Mountains of Ice

I thought some of you might find of interest a preview of the prologue from From Mountains of Ice, the new cultural fantasy novel on which I'm currently working. From Mountains of Ice is slated for release either this fall, or early 2010, from Five Rivers Chapmanry.

He tried very hard to remain still, to be strong, project the image of the Royal Prince he was. That scream in his throat had a life of its own. He wanted to set it free, let it encompass the room.

How could

Preparing for Events, Lorina-style

Here I am, two days before my reading/signing at Indigo in Burlington, Ontario, and you'd think by now this would be old hat. Well, it is. Sort of. Yet it remains that for several weeks before every gig I obsess: did the books arrive? I check the shipping confirmation for the 20th time. Did I send the promotional posters and bookmarks? I check that shipping confirmation yet again. Have I promoted the event? Yep, Facebook, blog, Chapters Community, Goodreads, Linkedin and Twitter; perhaps media i

Indigo Now Stocking Five Rivers' Books

In what has been a day filled with frustration and stress, I've just received some of the best news I've had in months.

The buyers at Indigo have agreed to stock And the Angels Sang and Shadow Song in the following locations:

Coles, 150 First Street, Orangeville, OntarioSmith Books, Heritage Mall, Owen Sound, OntarioChapters, Stone Road Mall, Guelph, Ontario

While this may seem something trivial to celebrate, for me, a micro-publisher and self-publishing author, battling the stigma of self-publish

Progress on New Novel, From Mountains of Ice

Yesterday marked a bit of a landmark for me; I finished the first draft of From Mountains of Ice, my new cultural fantasy novel. This is the first new novel I've written since I completed Shadow Song back in the early '90s, and while it was a struggle to strap myself to the chair to write, it was also a joy. I'd forgotten how much I love what I do, what for me is as essential as air.

What is this novel about? To summarize it's about a man who loses his honour, set in an Italianate world (perhaps

Interview with Deb Salisbury, author of Elephant's Breath & London Smoke

The following interview with Deb Salisbury first appeared on her blog in February, 2009, shortly after the release of her book, Elephant's Breath & London Smoke.
I started writing Elephant's Breath & London Smoke to fill in my own ignorance of colors, especially Victorian era color, but the more I researched, the more colors appeared that I had never heard of before. And in reading Victorian transcriptions of Elizabethan wills, I discovered colors I had never dreamed of. What was Gallant color? I
