I was born and raised in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, walking distance from the Tennessee border. I hunted, fished, and tended the garden to help my parents provide for our family, but I loved every subject in school. I knew my way out of my small community was through academics.

I then went off to college, became a chemical engineer, and married a nuclear engineer. I lived near San Francisco for 4 years, and I hated every moment until I gave up and moved back to North Carolina and got my PhD in chemical engineering. I follow a pescatarian diet for environmental reasons but don’t enforce it on my dog, Hector.

The plot is simple.  The characters are not.

With nuanced characters and a host of good-guys, All Systems Red isn't like most books I've read before.  I was intrigued by all the humans in the book just as much as I was with Murderbot.  The mystery bui

While I found this book readable and aesthetically interesting, I did not find it exactly exciting or enjoyable. Though it had highly varying vocabulary and rich sentences, there was a repetitive structure that drew me out of the narrative. The book ...more

It was, like all Sanderson books, very dependably fine. It was never angering, and it was self-consistent. Honestly, you can read any old gushing review and know that there is just a lot that goes right in this book (as with the other Stormlight entr ...more

I enjoyed the main series, The Parasol Protectorate, very much. While Prudence (and presumably the rest of The Custard Protocol) series shares a lot of qualities with its progenitor, I did not enjoy it nearly as well.

The plot of the story was thin f

I'm a huge sucker for this series, it seems. I enjoy the tongue in cheek understatement, the Victorian era jokes, and - though Conal Maccon and Alexia Tarabotti have clear and obvious flaws - how the romance is built upon reasonable frameworks. This ...more
