JOURNAL OF A DEBUT AUTHOR - CHAPTER SEVEN: Working with a real live editor for the first time.

Picture

One of the absolute best things that comes from getting a publishing contract for your novel, is that you get the opportunity to work with an editor.

Everyone says that the editing process can be difficult or long, but it can be a really great experience too, but either way, there is always so much to be learned while undertaking it.

And to be honest, it is really exciting to see your work shape up with someone else's careful attention!
Like really really exciting!
How I Fe...

Can't Wait.
Millic.

Ocean's clear
No more mirror
Feel inside
Million butterflies
Under daylight

I can’t wait till you come over, ah

MY TOP TEN TIPS FOR AUTHORS ASPIRING TO BE PUBLISHED: Stuff I learned that may help you.

Picture

This is my 100th blog post!

Whoah!

I'm celebrating by sharing a little of what I've learned on my journey to publication!
I hope it might be interesting and help others who are on the same journey I was! :)
Well I just want to start this by including some disclaimers.

I’m no expert, and everyone really does have a different road to publication. On top of that, these days there are so many different ways to be a successful writer, whether that is through the traditional route,...

YA AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Beck Nicholas, Australian Young Adult Author.

Picture

Welcome to my first YA Author Interview of 2019!

I have given the look of these a bit of a refresh for the new year, and have some interesting interviews coming up, which I will hopefully manage to post on a monthly basis like I did last year.

For my first 2019 interview, I am so excited to be hosting the absolutely lovely Beck Nicholas, who has written a bunch of wonderful YA novels and also happens to live in my city!

So excited to be hosting Beck, and I hope you find her answers...

JOURNAL OF A DEBUT AUTHOR - CHAPTER SIX: What on earth is an Author Questionnaire?

Picture

This post talks about the author questionnaire, which was something I had to fill out very early on in the publication process.

It is basically an information request from a publisher, to see what (or who) you know that might be helpful for your publicity or marketing, and also to see what interesting stories there may be behind your work.

And my understanding is, the more they know about you the better!

So what is an Author Questionnaire?

To be honest I had never heard of an...

THINKING ABOUT WRITING: What is success for an author?

Picture So today I want to talk about success.
And what makes a book successful when it is unleashed upon the unsuspecting world. Like a vulture.

Can you sense I am writing this piece from a slightly stressed out place?
Cos I am.

Basically because I have suddenly realised that my book is coming out soon, like really soon, and there is a lot to do, so much to organise, and I am kind of freaking out!

But what I actually want to write right now is a positive piece, not an 'author achieves their d...

2018 UPDATES: A Collection.

Picture Well here it is, the end of the year. The end of 2018!
And instead of writing a big reflection post I thought I'd put this collection of all my monthly diary entries of the year together instead (mainly because I am on holiday and it is hot and I'd rather be at the beach :) And I am lazy! Ha!).

In reflection, this is what I have achieved in 2018, and I'm not going to lie, I feel very proud of it!

Signed my first book contract for my YA debut novelWorked with an editor to get it read...

SONGS AS POETRY: Foals.

Picture

Give it All.

Foals.

Give me something I haven't seen
Give me the red light turning green
Give me the words but not the page
Give me it all
I called you up
Three times last night
Running through the streets
Bloody, from a fist fight
Keep you warm
Keep you there
Wanna keep you all

JOURNAL OF A DEBUT AUTHOR - CHAPTER FIVE: Apparently being published doesn’t stop you madly refreshing your email inbox.

Picture
It is interesting to me, because in a lot of ways you expect that when you finally achieve a goal you've held dear for years, you will suddenly feel very different, very fulfilled and very satisfied.
I don't think it's really the case.

Basically, your goals just immediately shift to something new (published one book? Now you can't stop thinking about publishing another one!). This means I still spend every waking moment refreshing my inbox to see if the status of my ongoing project...

BOOK MUSING: The Lightning Trail by Rebecca Roanhorse

Picture GOODREADS BLURB:

While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters.

Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last—and best—hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much larger and more terrifying than anyt...
