Cefn Bryn Great Cairn

Many stones across the whole cairn have been stacked into little piles across the site. Do not under any circumstances disturb ancient cairns like this, this counts as Heritage Crime.. A large and magnificently situated round cairn, located close to the Maen Ceti burial chamber this is the largest of many cairns in the area. See the nearby sites list on our page for more. It has spectacular views out to sea. The smaller cairns can be difficult to find in long bracken.

La Coste statue menhir

A replica statue menhir standing on a hill near the road D25 from Broquiès to Villefranche-de-Panat (not in the hamlet of La Coste). There is a car parking space, toilet and picnic tables attached. The signposts on the way indicate "Broquiès statue menhir", but the last one only says "La Coste statue menhir". The original statue menhir is preserved in Musée Fenaille, Rodez.

Spronser Seen (Sprons Lakes)

In the Spronsian lake district in Italy at 2100m altitude, many cup-marked stones can be found, including an impressive carving known as the Sonnenplatte (Sun platter). There is also a prehistoric sanctuary and lake that was presumably an important part of the setting. More photos on our page.

Bildstein (Elvas)

Above the Bishop's town of Bressanone in Italy in the vicinity of the small village of Elvas is one of the most important areas of Schalenstein in South Tyrol. The so-called Bildstein is certainly one of the most impressive of these rocks described with petroglyphs. We counted a total of 463 petroglyphs, in South Tyrol this number is only surpassed by the Wasserstein in Feldthurns.

Llyn Gelli Gain Ring Cairn

Situated on high ground within a marshy valley to the north of Llyn Gelli Gain lake, Gwynedd, this ring cairn occupies a prominent position. Craiglaseithin at 460m towers to the north east. Although low lying the heather and grasses are yet to overgrow the monument for this year (photos taken in April 2022).

Bonarme Dolmen

This was a pleasant find northwest of Belvès, Aquitaine where there is a nicely arranged forest park area with a waymarked and signposted walk. The dolmen is still partially buried in its tumulus with remains of a stone circle or perhaps two still surviving around its outside. The capstone is about 3 m by 2.5 m and still covering a rectangular chamber which is completely dry which can be seen down below the level of the surrounding ground.

St Non's Well (Pembrokeshire)

St Non's Well lies in a fantastic cliff top location close to St Non's Chapel near St David's, Pembrokeshire. It is here that St Non reputedly gave birth to her son, later to become St David, the patron Saint of Wales, in the 6th century AD. Legend states that at the moment of his birth the spring began to flow. The site of the chapel and well is ringed by a number of standing stones, said to be the remains of a Bronze Age stone circle.

Eisenzeithaus Venne

An open-air museum in Ostercappeln, Lower Saxony In 2008, the buildings of a small Pre-Roman Iron Age settlement (ca. 300 BC) were reconstructed on a 3000sqm area site. The centrepiece is this byre-dwelling (Wohnstallhaus), which is 16 m long, 8 m broad and 5.50 m high. The reconstruction was based on the discovered remains of comparable Iron Age settlements in the wider area.
