What to do about nothing?

Or am I discussing Shakespeare’s play with its complicated behind the scenes gossiping directed to changing opinions around serious decision making? Shakespeare really didn’t mean ‘nothing’; he meant noting which in his time could be translated as gossiping. What to do about gossip? How dangerous is it? When I was a child my Nana said that if someone listened at a closed door, then that someone would get what he or she deserved. I think she meant secrets should be kept secret, so don’t put yo...

Honorable Man

We mourn the death of our longest living president, George H.W.Bush, heroic in his life and lifestyle as pointed out by both sides of the aisle; both democrats and republicans. Perhaps both sides truly do respect an honorable man living an honorable life even if every policy he supported did not please everyone.

Consider our own lives. Consider quotes from famous writers. They often infer that intent and follow through for a good end is the essence of living honorably. Fame by itself is not i...

Original Man and Woman

Walking on my new teadmill this morning, with it going faster than I wished at seven in the morning, the news alert was what, some think is stunning. Scientists have determined, despite trying not to believe the results of their tests, that there was an original man and woman as our first ancestors dating back about 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. Further that about 90 percent of all animals’ DNA shows each kind as having its own common ancestors dating back to that time. Must have been a heck...

Looking Anew

K.B. Pellegrino Published by Kathleen Pellegrino · Just now ·

I’ve been struggling with a virus. Turns out I’m not alone. At least two in my family have visited the Doc in a Box and several friends as well. The problem is that we think in the morning that we can handle all the sniffles, coughs, choking, sneezing, upset stomachs and then at five o’clock when it’s too late to see the primary care doc, we can’t get throught the night. Well I’m on the upside now and am trying t...

After the Party’s Over

I’m oh so tired, not because I did the cooking for thanksgiving. No I was a guest at my son Rafe’s home where the menu was traditional but beautifully presented, where family abound and friends joined in, and where laughter was ever present. Politics was not center stage, but questions on what was important to each of us were asked. Some came from Chicago and New York but most from western Massachusetts where the protagonist of my serial murder mysteries operates as Major Crimes Unit Captain...

Giving Thanks

Who do we thank tomorrow on Thanksgiving Day 2018? For one: all those who dine with us from the babies to the elderly; all those who we loved and who loved us but who have passed; all those who taught us, sometimes sad lessons, but who have made us who we are today; our enemies, hopefully forgiven by us, but who firmed our values; our friends who defend us no matter what; our old friends whom we no longer see due to distance or time but who played important roles in our lives; and all oth...

Overwelling new discoveries

How many important events happen each day on the day or to be remembered as part of our history. Today is November 18th and the day in 1820 when Antartica was discovered. Think about it; this is the fifth largest continent and it was unknown until then. It is twice the size of Australia. Why do I write about this, you may ask. I answer that it is a symbol of all the other wordly things that we don't know today. Every day new discoveries are happening. Every day we read about medical, social, geographical, and scientific discoveries. Imagine if you will, how stunned the people of the world on November 18, 1820 were when they learned of a massive continent capped in ice that existed that was previously unknown.

Today through our instant communications we are inundated with new ideas, new discoveries, new social problems, new insights into the cosmos, new political problems, and on and on. We hear so much that we often do not appreciate the magnitude of our discoveries.

So I think we should read, listen, see, and appreciate our opportunity as learners on learning what is new in our world.

While we're examining how we look at the world we live in today, we should balance our lives so that we are not overwelmed. One way to do that is to read. Read fiction. Read nonfiction. Read away from our reality and allow the brain a vacation from the world. If we do that, then we may better appreciate and embrace the many changes in our lives and enjoy.

Snow, Early Snow – That’s New England

It will probably snow tomorrow and I, like many of you, examined my itenerary for the next few days. Lo and behold, I’m picking up Linda at Bradley Airport. She is flying in from the South to attend a family wedding reception on Saturday. I’m hoping that the weather will not interfere. Do you notice that the first thing on my mind when bad weather comes is related to my plans; how I am, or all of us, are frustrated with a little inconvenience.

Now we look to the raging fires in California and...

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is just two days away. I have family members who have served in different branches of the service. But that’s not what’s important. All who serve our country, my family, your family, need our support, our respect, and yes our love. Our military are our safety line in a world filled with disrespect. I include in our military all who work to keep us safe including police and firefighters. We owe them all so much.

I am a mystery writer but there is no mystery here about what to do....

Mystery in Western Massachusetts

Thursday we visited the Big E, the exposition in West Springfield. It is the largest fair in the northeast and when we are there we see the diversity of people having so much fun. For us, as for many who visit yearly, we have our favorites. There are the six New England state buildings demonstrating the foods, products, and leisure activities they are known for. The tastings are wonderful, but every person has favorite repeat stations. Fortunately for me, I’m more discriminatory in what i eat...
