Weddings

Tonight,I met with a young couple who are daring to marry against the odds of successful marriages that currently exist in the U. S. today. I was so encouraged by their courage; I don’t mean to have a play on words here. I applaud their ’tilting at windmills’ as some of my friends now make for comments on marriage; as if there is no hope for long term marriage in this modern world. Many say that serial marriage is the norm; that people don’t want to stay with one person for a lifetime. I disa...

Photography

As a writer, I am often reminded of how slow my craft is when I am called to describe a setting or a character. Sometimes on a good day I am able to give my readers a picture in a few short words or a few short sentences; but other times it takes paragraphs.

Now if I were a photographer, I could give you, the viewer, one photo. That photo would require me, a writer, to write pages or even volumes. Then, however I think about the number of photos the photographer must take to get that 'one insightful photo'. I think of their frustration with lighting, when, if outdoors, nature changes their prospective image every moment, requiring them to adapt.

I, as a writer, may rewrite a thousand times. The moment is not gone in an instant. So to all the authors/artists of photography books/images, I salute your work.

Dark and dreary settings for dark plots

Dear Readers,

I am, again, drawn to a novel written by a craftsman who has, again, sucked me into a plot that I do not particularly want to follow. And yet, may I use the word ‘again’ again, I’m two thirds through reading this novel about a run-down, rainy industrial town in Norway, perhaps, or elsewhere. Nesbo’s protagonist is going down the morality sewer while I say, “Don’t, please don’t.” I watch the descent and then watch the rise of another character whose moral compass had been in ques...

Hi Readers, Captain Rudy Beauregard is the protagonist in the trilogy on ‘Evil Exists in West Site’ published by Liferich Publishing Company. The first two serial murder mysteries were published in 2018; the third is set to be published sometime in February 2019. They are in order: “Sunnyside Road -Paradise Dissembling”; Mary Lou – What did she do?”; and “Brother of Another Mother – All for One! Always?”. Into the Season of Winter

It’s January 8th, two days after the Three Wise Men visited, one day after I removed all the lovely holiday decorations from my home and cleaned a section of the basement for storage, and on this day, finally recognized the continuing dark days of winter. We are now into the season of winter. What to do! What to do with what many say is the monotony of cold and short days often overcast with shades of grey. Mind you, not like that book title, but still eaving an earie feeling of potential doo...

Christmas Eve

There have been snowflakes flying, but only enough of them to allow us to see them in the air. They are not sticking, but still do the job of reminding me of the season. It is as the song says, “The most beautiful time of the year.” Bing Crosby would bring that feeling to you just by singing with the emotion of one who was convinced of what he was saying. I too love this time of year. I reminded myself this morning, that someday I should write about a mystery set during this time of year wher...

Tuesdays with Mystery

It’s a week before Christmas and the great mystery, and all the little mysteries, appear before me. I’ll talk about the little mysteries. For example, grocery shopping is a mystery! Simple you think, but you are wrong. In western Massachusetts, all your desires for diversity of your palette are available. No problem there. But, and I say but; you must travel. There is Costco and BJ’s for the big stuff shopping and for new trends. Next are our go-to grocery stores. We have many including our B...

Winter: its landscape as a motivator

The southeast has just experienced a record snowstorm. Springfield, Massachusetts, my home experienced snow in early November, but right now we just have seasonal, slightly lower temperatures, today registering 27 degrees farenheit. I love my snow. I’m a bit jealous that we have no forecasts of snow on the near weather horizon. It’s almost Christmas and I want snow.

Think about what snow does. It creates an architecture that just blows my mind, That old rubbish barrel your neighbor keeps on t...
