Display Caps Lock Warning in Most Browsers

Display Caps Lock Warning in Most Browsers:

A script that adds WebKit-like notification inside the password field when the caps lock is enabled, in a progressive-enhancement kind of way. It's not a lightweight script (about 170 lines) and James Edwards doesn't clearly state which browsers currently support it.

On Publishing

On Publishing:

Elliott Jay Stocks:

Right now, in an age of print-on-demand for real-world publication and iPads / iPhones / Kindles for virtual publication, it would — on the face of it — seem unwise to launch a magazine like 8 Faces, especially as it's targeted at such a niche audience. As I said in the introduction of the magazine, "everything about this project shouldn't work." But it has, and it's done so in a bigger way than I ever would've imagined.

I'm saddened I won't see a...

LiveReload Safari Extension

LiveReload Safari Extension:

Apply CSS or Javascript changes without even reloading the page. And Gregg Pollack's casual voiceover makes the screencast a pleasure to watch.

Sennheiser MKE 400 Mini Shotgun Microphone

Sennheiser MKE 400 Mini Shotgun Microphone:

I own the RODE VideoMic, but the Sennheiser looks like it's literally half the size. The all-metal construction is a plus over the RODE's (nearly) all-plastic construction.

The Magic Trackpad

Magic Trackpad packaging

When Apple's Magic Trackpad was announced on Tuesday, I was quick to order one. With the suite of software I use — design, video, sound and so on — having a gestural device on my desktop to interact with that software was an easy sell. I didn't necessarily see it as a replacement for my mouse prior to purchasing, and since its arrival yesterday, I still don't see it as a replacement. More about that in a minute.

Size-wise, it's a little over 5" by 5" square (13 cm × 13 cm). Compared to the...

Good Night, and Good Luck.

Good Night, and Good Luck.:

Watched this film again last night and enjoyed it just as much as the first couple of times. It's beautifully shot, well-written, and if you're into the whole mid-century modern thing right now, you'll enjoy it even more.

Urbanized

Urbanized:

Gary Hustwit's third and final film in the design trilogy that includes Helvetica and Objectified, Urbanized will explore the design of cities:

Who is allowed to shape our cities, and how do they do it? Unlike many other fields of design, cities aren't created by any one specialist or expert. There are many contributors to urban change, including ordinary citizens who can have a great impact improving the cities in which they live. By exploring a diverse range of urban design...

"Mad Men" Furniture: Don Draper's Office

"Mad Men" Furniture: Don Draper's Office:

A very detailed review of the show's mid-century style from none other than The Mid-Century Modernist.

I've not seen a single episode of "Mad Men", but I've read/seen/digested enough tweets or posts to have seen at least two seasons worth. At least.

TwelveSouth Compass Stand for iPad:

So practical, so beautiful. Same price as BookArc ($40), but way more utility.
