Feltron 2010 Annual Report

Feltron 2010 Annual Report:

Visually stunning, as always. Except this year's is different:

The 2010 Annual Report is an encapsulation of my father's life, as communicated by the calendars, slides and other artifacts in my possession.

The text is set in H&FJ's Gotham and Tungsten.

Update: Photo showing some of the source materials.

Happy Cog Hosting: White-glove, LAMP-stack Hosting

Happy Cog Hosting: White-glove, LAMP-stack Hosting:

As of a few weeks ago, Authentic Jobs and portions of this site have been running on Happy Cog Hosting. So far it's been very reliable, and the customer service has been top-notch.

The doors are now open for a limited public beta. But take note, this isn't a replacement to your $10/month host. Instead,

It's for people who are tired of managing their own infrastructure and would rather have someone else do it. It's for sites with impressive traffic and bandwidth requirements. It's also not for people who want to manage every aspect of their infrastructure through a feature-saturated control panel. It's about professionals working with professionals and delivering respectful, attentive service. It's rock-solid, white glove hosting for people who cringe at the idea of hosting.

There's only one plan and only one price: $799/month. If you're running a LAMP stack implementation and fit the profile above, please get in touch with me here or on Twitter. I have some invitations I'd love to hand out.

Daring Fireball: The Verizon iPhone 4

Daring Fireball: The Verizon iPhone 4:

The Gruber, comprehensive as always, sharing his take on the new Verizon iPhone. He's had one for a week already:

The numbers don't lie. AT&T's data network is faster — when you have a strong connection on both phones. The catch is with that 'when you have a strong connection' clause. Verizon's network has wider, more consistent coverage, and noticeably superior voice quality….

There's one difference [between the AT&T iPhone and Verizon iPhone], the network, and their network looks better. Verizon isn't competing with Apple. They're competing against AT&T. Assuming the iPhone 4 continues to perform on Verizon going forward as it has for me this past week, Verizon is going to bash AT&T over the head with the iPhone 4. Same phone, better on Verizon.

Existing Verizon customers can pre-order today. All other customers can order starting February 9.

Volkswagen: The Force – The force is strong with this little one. And clearly with Deutsch LA, the agency behind the ad, too. Rumor has it this ad will air in Sunday's Super Bowl.

Sketchnotes

Sketchnotes:

Many of us probably know people who take notes at conferences by sketching. Eva-Lotta Lamm is one of these individuals, and she put her sketches from two years' worth of conferences in a book, printed on demand by Lulu. Brilliant. Just ordered a copy.

Book Review: "Living with Complexity" by Donald Norman

Book Review: "Living with Complexity" by Donald Norman:

Review by Robert Blinn, who observes the following:

Norman explains that all of our desire for 'simplicity' is a false hope because life is complex. Complexity, however, does not need to be confusing. Those designers who can manage to produce devices (and systems) that corral the complexity of the world into intuitively grouped and well-designed systems will garner success in our digital world.

I love this. It's the same point I try to make when speaking about visual hierarchy and managing complexity, rather than eliminating it.

An MBA? "Don't Bother."

An MBA? "Don't Bother.":

Philip Delves Broughton, Harvard MBA, writing for The Economist:

The return on investment on an MBA has gone the way of Greek public debt. If you have a decent job in your mid- to late- 20s, unless you have the backing of a corporate sponsor, leaving it to get an MBA is a higher risk than ever. If you are getting good business experience already, the best strategy is to keep on getting it, thereby making yourself ever more useful rather than groping for the evanescent brass rings of business school.

That last line cannot be overstated. I know personally a few individuals with MBAs from prestigious schools who are either seeking work or are underemployed. The need for people who can produce dwarfs the need for people who can manage people in today's economy.

How Influencers Manage Their Email

How Influencers Manage Their Email:

Responses from Caterina Fake, Ben Blumenfeld, Andrew Warner, Julie Zhuo, and myself. Here's mine:

I loathe email. Unfortunately it's still the primary means of most business communication over 140 characters. I used to try and keep my inbox below 50 items as regularly as possible. Now I get to email when I can, even if that means a swelling inbox. It's just not worth it to me anymore to devote significant chunks of my day to managing email.

In other words: I don't manage my email.

Hiring: Mobile Web Developer at WillowTree Apps

Hiring: Mobile Web Developer at WillowTree Apps:

Virginia-based WillowTree Apps has launched an impressive 70+ apps since 2008 for the iOS, Blackberry, Windows 7, and Android platforms. I was fairly impressed as a flipped through their portfolio.

If you know HTML5/CSS3 inside and out, have a solid understanding of JavaScript, and have experience working with at least one high-level, server-side language, you'll contribute to making their portfolio even more impressive. Position is in Charlottesville, and relocation assistance is offered for the right candidate.
