Long Live the Redesign
Francisco Inchauste:
Designers have become enablers to the redesign. We helped to create this monster….
It's time to stop this madness. Realign it, or refine it. Focus and attack the high priority issues that will cause little disruption and improve on the experience. Set up ways to measure and diagnose specific problems. Yes, sometimes you really do have to make big changes, just understand why you are doing it. Fine tune the engine, don't keep rebuilding it.
Naturally, I'm drawn to this article because my name is mentioned in the first sentence. But Francisco's arguments are well-constructed, and 6 years later, I still value realigning over redesigning. I'm fairly confident users do, too.
PhotoSwipe, an Image Gallery for Mobiles Devices
HTML/CSS/JS-based image gallery specifically targeting mobile phones and tablets. I've just tested this on iPad 1, iPhone 4, BlackBerry PlayBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and HTC Aria. It works fine on all of them except the Aria (slow loading for some reason).
CSS Mask-Image & Text
Here's something I wasn't aware of: Add a texture to HTML text using the CSS property mask-image and a transparent PNG. Currently works only in WebKit but degrades nicely for other browsers. Thanks, Trent.
Scrollability
Summarized nicely by its creator, Joe Hewitt: "Native scrolling for mobile web apps… or at least the closest thing to it!" Check the example on your iOS device: http://bit.ly/scrllabl
The pinned header in the example reminds me of the newly updated mobile.twitter.com, which has some really nice features for a web-based app.

DOC2DOCK: Save Our Supplies
Puzzld!
Jacob Souva, who did the illustration for Funny Bugs, did the illustrations for this beautiful app for kids ages (I would guess) 2 to 5.
Via Veerle Pieters, who just published an interview with Jacob.
Responsive Web Design or Separate Mobile Site? Eh. It Depends.
Josh Clark, author of Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps, summarizes and opines on many of the debates circulating the community right now regarding responsive design and mobile-optimized content. It's a good read.
It's been 4 years since I wrote my own thoughts on the topic, and occasionally I'm asked if I plan to write a second edition. Short answer: If I were miraculously to find the time for such a project, I would force myself to write a new title rather than update the existing one. With the plethora of touchscreen devices unveiled in the last 4 years — and the incredible range of screen resolutions — I don't believe "mobile web" is the right label for the discussion anymore. I'm still searching for the right label.

Hiring: Senior Software Developer at charity: water
Regular readers of this site are familiar with my partiality to charity: water. They're seeking someone with experience developing with an MVC framework (CakePHP is a plus), database design and implementation (RDBMS or NoSQL) and working in test-driven development. Experience with PHP and Java is necessary, as well as HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
It's a tall order for an organization accustomed to crushing tall orders, i.e. helping nearly a billion people get access to clean drinking water. Forward this opportunity on to your friends and let's help a great organization find a great developer.
Responsive Web Design by Ethan Marcotte
I have an advance copy in hand, and I can't wait for this to be released to the general public on June 7. Ten bucks says it outsells the first A Book Apart title, HTML5 for Web Designers, which I'm fairly certain did extremely well.
Public Gothic
Really liking this typeface, and really loving how they presented it using vintage metal oil cans.
