Apple Cider Vinegar : Uses and Health Benefits

by Rachel Duran

Apple cider vinegar has been utilized for centuries for a variety of medical and health uses. This article will discuss a few of the research claims that have been supported by science.

Apple cider vinegar is a vinegar made from apples, sugar and yeast. A vinegar is a liquid containing acetic acid made through a fermenting process. Apple cider vinegar has many benefits, it has shown to help regulate blood sugar, potentially help with weight loss, relieve cold symptoms and even improve the appearance of acne and scarring.

Apple Cider Vinegar Helps Manage Diabetes

Although long known as a ‘home remedy’ clinical research has supported the health claims around apple cider vinegar. There is clinical evidence showing that apple cider vinegar may have specific benefits for the management of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that is characterized by elevated levels of blood sugar (glucose)which over time to serious damage to the heart, eyes, blood vessels and nerves. In 1980, there was approximately 108 million people with diabetes worldwide. Since 1980, it has increased dramatically over the past few decades to an estimated 422 million, and it will undoubtedly keep growing. According to the World Health Organization, 8% of women on Earth (approximately 205 million) live with diabetes.

Apple Cider Vinegar Helps Manage Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease marked by an inability to manage blood sugar levels appropriately. It is categorized into Type 1 Type 2 and gestational (during pregnancy). Apple cider vinegar has only shown to be helpful in Type 2 diabetes.  Consuming 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with water and a cheese snack before bedtime  significantly lowered blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes the following morning.

The hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels is called insulin. However, in type 2 diabetes a person is unable to produce enough insulin or respond appropriately to the hormone. Some evidence suggests that consuming apple cider vinegar daily may be useful in helping people with type 2 diabetes to control their blood sugar levels. In 2007, another study cited by WebMD, involving 11 people with type 2 diabetes found taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed lowered glucose levels in the morning by 4 to 6 percent.

Apple Cider Vinegar Improves Pre-Diabetic Symptoms

Consuming apple cider vinegar daily has also been shown to be helpful for people who are on the verge of being diagnosed with diabetes, often referred to as ‘pre-diabetic’. People with pre-diabetic symptoms benefited the most from the vinegar, cutting their blood glucose concentrations by nearly half. People with diabetes can be improved their blood glucose levels by 25 percent with vinegar. In 2004, a study cited in the American Diabetes Foundation Publication Diabetes Care found that taking vinegar before meals significantly increased insulin sensitivity and dramatically reduced the insulin and glucose spikes that occur after meals.

apple cider vinegar

The study involved 29 people, divided into three groups.  The results were quite significant.  All three groups had better blood glucose readings with the vinegar than with the placebo.  People with pre-diabetic symptoms benefited the most from the vinegar, cutting their blood glucose concentrations by nearly half.  People with diabetes improved their blood glucose levels by 25 percent with vinegar.  People with pre-diabetic symptoms had lower blood glucose than the healthy participants after both drank vinegar.

Studies have also shown that apple cider vinegar may also increase satiety, which can have a significant impact on weight loss. Satiety is our ability to feel full or satiated after eating. In one study, it showed that drinking apple cider vinegar decreased total calorie intake by 275 over the course of one day.In 2006, one study showed that vinegar could lower cholesterol in laboratory rats3. Another study on rats 4 found the acetic acid could reduce their blood pressure in vinegar.

Other Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

There are many different benefits of apple cider vinegar that can benefit the body and promote healthy healing. Some of these benefits have more scientific evidence than others. For example, although the research to date looks favorable, more studies are needed to confirm the extent of vinegar’s insulin stabilization benefits. I have linked some of the studies that will show you how apple cider vinegar can have a positive impact for the health of your body.
Why does apple cider vinegar have these potential benefits? It is thought that because apple cider vinegar is rich in minerals, vitamins (including potassium, calcium, and beta-carotene), complex carbohydrates, fiber, pectin, amino acids, and beneficial enzymes. If you are interested in the breakdown of ingredients of apple cider vinegar go to webmd.com/diet/apple-cider-vinegar-and-your-health.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

In conclusion, the evidence of apple cider vinegar could help people with Type 2 diabetes to control their blood sugar levels. As mentioned above there are many other amazing benefits that apple cider vinegar can impact the body in a positively healthy way. If you would like to take a closer look into apple cider vinegar and all the fantastic benefits here are some references that will go more into detail on apple cider vinegar. Let’s keep the body with proper use of apple cider vinegar.

Start Young to Prevent Gum Disease

by Dr. Jack Gruber, DDS

Smiles are meant to last a lifetime. Yet, inconsistent dental habits can have a big impact on your child’s teeth and gums in the future. Often what doesn’t become routine early on, such as flossing and regular dental visits, leads to gum disease and tooth loss in adulthood.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 85% of children ages two through 17 have had a dental visit in the past year. Yet, this percentage drops to 64% in adults between the ages of 18 and 64. The key to successful long-term dental care is consistency in habits. Dental visits should be ongoing throughout childhood and adolescence to set the foundation for young adults to be proactive in their dental care.

From When the First Teeth Appear

Dental hygiene should begin as soon as soon as your baby’s first teeth appear. Daily cleaning with a clean damp washcloth sets the stage for toothbrushing. By age two, brushing with a fluoride toothpaste should become a habit. Even at this early age, tooth decay and the preliminary stages of gum disease can begin. Avoid hard-bristled toothbrushes. Your best bet is to use one with soft, rubber bristles that clean teeth without damaging fragile tooth enamel and gum tissue. This also is the time to discourage pacifiers and thumb-sucking.

By the time your child reaches six, they likely have the manual dexterity to brush along the gum line and across the biting surfaces of their teeth. Of course, you’ll want to regularly check to make sure they’re getting those hard-to-reach spots. Your child’s dentist can provide you with products that help you identify bacterial plaque by turning it a conspicuous color, making it easy for you and your child to identify where they are not brushing adequately. Remember, ongoing encouragement to brush regularly in childhood sets the stage for effective tooth brushing in adulthood. Routines that become habits are much easier to keep when they’ve been established early.

The Importance of Dental Visits

Twice yearly dental check-ups offer a host of benefits for your child. These visits teach that oral health is important, and they enable your child to have a good, positive attitude about dental cleanings and treatments. Dental visits also enable your child’s dentist to identify problems early before they get worse or require more extensive treatment.

Children who are introduced to dental care early and consistently are the most likely to continue to take care of their teeth into adulthood. They will be part of the 64% of adults who obtain regular dental visits and will also be the ones who avoid the pain and suffering of gum disease and tooth loss in the future.

Are You Too Busy to go to the Gym?

by Cascia Talbert

I’ve always thought about joining the gym that my husband belongs to. The only problem is every time I think about it I ask myself, “When will I be able to go to workout?” Between careers, kids, our husbands, volunteer work and other responsibilities  moms do not have free time to go to a gym to workout. Contact Reda from Strong Chap to give you the best advice for you too keep your body fit at home.

The easiest and most convenient option for busy moms like myself is to work out from home. There are many different online fitness programs that offer private online training.  But what type of program should you try? This all depends on your fitness level and what your goal is.

If your goal is to lose weight you must incorporate cardio fitness into your routine.  Cardio kickboxing is proven to be one of the fastest ways to burn calories. You can burn up to up to 850 calories in just one hour of Cardio Kickboxing training. Strikefitonline.com is an online MMA workout program started by fitness trainer Greg Sanon. They offer several different cardio kickboxing videos you can watch from home.

cardio kickboxing

I recently tried one of their kickboxing videos and found it pretty easy to do and less intense than the Jillian Michaels workouts I am used to.  They state that they have videos for all fitness levels. I should be able to find videos better suited for my skills.

Greg Sanon explains why he started strikefitonline.com:

“The idea for this website came from my own personal experience of not being able to go to the gym as frequently as I would like because of my busy schedule. When I started fighting I used to workout every single day 2-3 times a day training in kickboxing and boxing. I was in the best shape of my life, but as I got older and responsibilities grew larger I had to pick up 2 jobs while going to college full time and could never find time or afford to get to the gym to train on a regular basis. If I had this website at that time I believe I would still be training regularly and on my path to become a professional fighter. My goal in making this website is so that I can get as many people as possible to workout to and gain the benefits of Cardio-MMA workouts despite their busy schedule or skill level.I am also a personal trainer, and I train people in my community using cardio kickboxing fitness workouts. I love training people, but I also realized how hard it is to get my clients to train on a regular basis (at least 3 times a week). This is due to there busy work schedule, taking care of their families, and other priorities. Knowing that I could help these people train on a regular basis and still take care of their responsibilities is another reason why I decided to create this website. “

If you are too busy to go to the gym and are ready to switch up your boring workout routine and try our engaging cardio striking workouts, visit strikefitonline and subscribe to their fitness program. It costs the same as a basic gym membership, saves you time and you will love the results.

Talking To Your Teen About Drunk Driving

by Guest Author

Being a parent of a teenager may have its ups and downs. It’s great to watch your child become more independent, make decisions and take on more responsibilities. It can also be a little nerve-wracking to stand back and let them do things on their own; driving is often one of those things.

If you have a newly licensed teen driver in your home, you’ve probably already started talking about curfews, reminders to top off the gas tank, check in when your teen gets to their destination, and not driving while distracted. If you haven’t talked about drunk driving, you’re not alone, and you’re not too late, but it is an important topic to discuss.

drunk driving

Let’s Start With The Facts

Before you talk to your teen, here are some facts about teens, car accidents, and alcohol use:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reports that an estimated 25 percent of accidents with teens involve an underage drinking driver.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), about 95 percent of people who are alcohol dependent began drinking before the age of 21.

According to the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, an estimated 1 in 7 teens participate in binge drinking, but only 1 in 100 parents believe that their teen does.

Adolescents who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related accident, which will eventually put them on the spot needing assistance from a criminal law attorney.

When Should You Start Talking To Your Teen About Drunk Driving?

No parent wants to think that their teen could become another alcohol-related statistic, but there’s a good chance that your teen will have to choose about whether or not to drink alcohol or get in the car with an impaired driver at least once during their high school years.

Rather than ignoring the subject and hoping that your teen will make the right decision, it’s better to talk about it and be clear about your expectations and concerns. It’s also the perfect opportunity to listen to your teen and see what they have to say (their concerns and expectations about alcohol and driving).

There’s no magic age to start talking to your teen about drinking and driving, but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should consider talking to their kids about the dangers associated with alcohol as early as nine years old.

Why so young? Between the ages of 9 and 13, children start receiving “positive” messages about alcohol (this can be through advertising, television, or even what they see at home). Some alcohol use starts as early as middle school, and while middle schoolers can’t drive, there are still some negative consequences that should be addressed.

What If My Child Is Over The Age Of 13?

If your teen is over the age of 13, you might be worried that you’ve missed your chance to talk about the dangers of drunk driving and alcohol use in general. It’s never too late to talk to your teen about their health and well-being.

It may be more challenging to have a discussion about alcohol and maybe your teen has already participated in underage drinking; either way, you should still make time to talk to your teen. Not sure how to approach the subject? Here are some tips.

Driving Is A Privilege

If you’re like most parents, you probably pay for your teen’s car insurance and you either bought the vehicle they drive, or you let them use a car that you own.

While having a driver’s license is convenient and a significant rite of passage for some teens, it’s important to remind your teen that driving is a privilege that can be taken away at any time by you (or by the law, if one is broken).

If your child happens to have a drink driving offence but you’re not sure if he’s actually guilty or even if he turns out to be, you want the best possible outcome in the case, you can contact a drink diving solicitor.

Discuss Real-Life Consequences Of Drunk Driving

Aside from discussing death or injury, many parents don’t know how to apply drunk driving to the “real world.”

While your teen could die in an alcohol-related accident or have a life-changing injury, it’s important to discuss other things like how it could affect getting a job, a scholarship, their opportunities in extracurricular activities like sports, and how their driving record can become tarnished. Even if they don’t get injured, they’ll have a permanent record of their incident after dealing with a drunk driving attorney.

Be Open, Honest, and Use Facts

Scare tactics aren’t always effective. If you want your teen to listen, be honest, use facts, and use age-appropriate language (especially when explaining to a younger child). Your teen is more likely to listen and respect you if you’re honest and open with them.

Sign A Pledge As A Family

After you’ve discussed your expectations, concerns, and set some rules about driving sober and never riding with an impaired driver, signing a pledge is a great way to stay accountable. Rather than making your teen driver be the only person to sign the pledge, why not commit to sober driving as a family of drivers?

Tooth Banking – Information for Parents

by Guest Author

Tooth Banking – FAQs and Answers You Should Know

You’ve undoubtedly heard of cord blood banking. It’s the process of preserving umbilical cord blood, and it’s done to save a newborn’s stem cells for future medical use. The downside with this is that there’s only a short window of time in which to make a decision. And what happens if you didn’t know saving cord blood was an option, or if you decided to take a pass on it at the time? Expecting parents and current parents have another option: Tooth banking. The following FAQs and answers can help you make an informed decision as to whether tooth banking is the right choice for your family.

tooth bankingWhat exactly is tooth banking?

Until recently, baby teeth were only considered to hold value by the child losing them. But while the couple bucks the Tooth Fairy would pay for a tooth can be quickly spent, the potential benefits of tooth banking can remain viable for decades. Tooth banking is the process of harvesting dental stem cells from the pulp inside the tooth, and cryogenically preserving them indefinitely.

Why do parents decide to bank their kids’ teeth (tooth banking)?

Most parents would do anything for their kids, and much of what parents do is geared toward helping their kids have a better future. After all, education is valued in part because of the future promise it holds for a rewarding career. Tooth banking similarly offers a future promise. When kids with banked teeth develop diseases, either during childhood or adulthood, the preserved stem cells can potentially be used to treat these diseases. Tooth banking offers the promise of a healthier, longer life.

Why do stem cells matter?

Your body has lots of different typenk s of cells, but stem cells are pretty special. Stem cells can continue to divide indefinitely to provide the body with an endless supply of new cells. Each time a stem cell divides, the new cell may become another stem cell or it may specialize, such as by becoming a red blood cell or a brain cell. It’s these regenerative abilities that make stem cells of special interest to scientists, since they offer potential for treating diseases and disorders.

What are mesenchymal stem cells?

There are a few different types of stem cells, one of which is mesenchymal stem cells. You might also hear these referred to as bone marrow stromal stem cells or skeletal stem cells. These are the stem cells preserved by tooth banking, since the developing tooth bud of a wisdom tooth and the baby teeth are particularly rich in mesenchymal stem cells. That’s because these cells are responsible for dividing into future enamel, blood vessels, dental pulp, dentin, and nerve tissue.

What’s the big deal with mesenchymal stem cells?

Mesenchymal stem cells are officially considered to be multipotent. This means they are capable of producing multiple types of specialized cells. However, research has demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells are in actuality pluripotent. A pluripotent stem cell is essentially like a master key that will unlock any door. It’s capable of generating any type of cell or tissue that the body needs. They can also perpetually renew themselves.

Ok, so stem cells are pretty impressive. But what can doctors use them for?

Stem cells have been investigated since the 1950s. There are more than 2,000 clinical trials exploring their uses. The stem cells parents can preserve with tooth banking could be used to treat diseases and conditions. The current applications for stem cells include:

Multiple sclerosis

Leukemia and lymphomas

Metabolic disorders

Gum disease

Cardiovascular diseases

Spinal cord injuries

Bone and cartilage repair

Immunodeficiencies

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Researchers have found that they can use mesenchymal stem cells to produce hepatocytes, and hepatocytes are being investigated as a potential cure for diabetes. Other emerging applications include:

Brain injuries

Stroke recovery

Corneal damage

Autism

Hearing loss

Cerebral palsy

Crohn’s disease

Heart attack damage

Heart defects

Kidney disease

Muscular dystrophy

Alzheimer’s disease

Jawbone regeneration and facial reconstruction

Tooth loss

How is tooth banking different from umbilical cord blood banking?

The stem cells harvested from umbilical cord blood are hematopoietic. This means they are capable of dividing and specializing into blood and immune-related cells, but that’s as far as their abilities extend. Since mesenchymal stem cells originating from teeth can divide and specialize into any type of cell the body requires, these have far greater possibilities in terms of medical treatments.

How many teeth need to be banked?

You could bank just one of your child’s teeth. But the more teeth you bank, the more mesenchymal stem cells you’ll save. You could decide to bank all of your child’s baby teeth. Or, if your child has already had permanent teeth for a while, you can plan to have all of the unneeded wisdom teeth extracted for preservation.

Is there any difference between banking teeth at a younger age versus at an older age?

This is a common question because it implies that one could simply have a tooth extracted at any age for use in treating a serious disease. After all, why bother banking if you aren’t sure whether the stem cells will be needed? Unfortunately, the older we get, the more worn down we get. Any exhausted parent of an overactive toddler or moody teen can attest to this. Our teeth get worn down the same as our bodies. Enamel erodes and stem cells diminish in number. It’s best to bank teeth earlier in life because that’s when the mesenchymal stem cells are healthiest.

So how can I bank my child’s teeth? Should I just wait for them to fall out?

When your child loses a baby tooth, there is a limited window of time in which the pulp remains viable. It needs to be preserved right away. That’s why tooth banking companies send out collection kits for dentists to use. Talk to your child’s dentist about harvesting his or her baby teeth or wisdom teeth to preserve the invaluable stem cells inside.

If you’d like to find out more about tooth banking for your child’s future, The Tooth Bank is always happy to answer questions.

How to Get Proper Nutrition as a New Mom

by Susan Bowerman, M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition Susan

If you’re a new mom or mom of a toddler, chances are you’re tired, worn out and you may not be getting the proper nutrition that you need. As a mom, especially a new mom, you may find it difficult to make time for yourself while caring for your newborn or your toddler. Maybe you’re skipping meals or making shortcuts simply because you don’t have time. Registered dietitian Susan Bowerman offers advice on ways to make sure you’re getting the nutrients you need.

new mom

Take your meal with you. One of the best ways to get proper nutrition without taking up a lot of time is to start drinking meal replacement shakes like Herbalife Nutrition Formula 1 Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix that’s designed to be mixed with milk or soy milk. These have numerous benefits: they’re nutrient dense, are prepared quickly and can be taken on the go. In addition, you can customize them for your personal nutritional needs and flavor preferences. They are often touted as a weight loss solution because they offer fewer calories than other meal choices, but in reality, they’re just the perfect way to get a meal in without time spent preparing or eating. So, if you’re finding yourself pressed for time or constantly out and about with your little one, meal replacement shakes are an ideal solution.

What to look for in a booster. Worried about getting all the nutrients you need conveniently wrapped up in a shake? You may have heard of nutritional boosters, which come in all forms and are typically designed for a specific group to provide a concentrated nutrient. These can be added to your Formula 1 shake as a snack or meal replacement shake to boost the nutritional value and customize them even more.

If you’re not really sure what to look for in a booster, make sure to select one designed for new moms, though you can also add other boosters based on other needs you may have. You might also want to pick a booster without added sugars. You don’t want to compromise one aspect of your diet while improving another.

Personalizing your meal replacement shake. If you’re interested in other add-ins for your shake, you might consider adding berries for some extra antioxidants, or a leafy green vegetable like spinach, which includes iron. Including healthy fats is easy too, if that’s something you need more of in your diet. Great sources of healthy fats are nut butters (in moderation), avocado and seeds. And if you’re interested in fiber, go for a handful of rolled oats. All of these are options that can ‘boost’ the nutritional profile of your meal replacement shake.

The benefits of a meal replacement shake. Replacing one meal a day with a shake has other benefits aside from time-saving and increasing your nutrient intake. It can help with weight loss in several different ways. One main way is it aids in reducing your overall calorie intake and thereby helps you to lose that extra baby weight. Also, the thick liquid is incredibly satiating and can keep you fuller longer, helping you ward off those cravings later on. Just make sure you’re not packing your shake or over doing it with whole milk and nut butters or it might have the opposite effect.

So next time you’re feeling frazzled and like you don’t have time to get the nutrients you need, remember that getting a boost and a quick meal is as simple as drinking a meal replacement shake. All moms are supermoms, but a meal replacement shake will help you to feel like one too.

Herbal Remedies and Treatments Using Echinacea

by Tiffany Pratt

Echinacea has been used as a medicinal herb since ancient times. This powerful yet gentle herb has been used to treat everything from colds, fever, to mouth sores. In recent years it has gained popularity for treating acne, fatigue, allergies, and fatigue. Echinacea isn’t just a powerful natural antioxidant – it also boosts the immune system and reduces stress.

Echinacea was first discovered by the ancient Egyptians, when they realized that it helped many diseases. For many years, echinacea has been used as a common herbal remedy for all kinds of illnesses and conditions. The Romans learned about echinacea’s healing properties when they became aware of the herb’s ability to treat eye infections. Since echinacea can relieve nausea and vomiting, it is often prescribed to treat children suffering from a common cold.

When you view abstract data about echinacea, it can sometimes be hard to understand how powerful this compound is. At first glance you might think it is a good old-fashioned stomach bug that only needs to be rubbed on the outside of your body to cure common colds. However, if you read through a scientific study involving more than a dozen scientists, you will see that this herb has a much stronger effect than previously thought. In fact, scientific evidence shows that echinacea has the potential to reduce the amount of cytochrome p450, which is a substance found in the body that is involved in inflammation.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

According to the study, echinacea reduced the amount of cytochrome p450 by about forty percent, making it one of the strongest anti-inflammatories available. The reduction in inflammation means that individuals who suffer from common colds might not have to deal with the pain of a sore throat, but they should not have to deal with the nausea and vomiting either. As studies continue to progress, echinacea could soon find its way into the treatment of various other health conditions as well, including arthritis and skin diseases.

There are some medical practitioners who recommend echinacea for individuals with allergies, but there is no clinical evidence to support that claim. Some animal studies also suggest that echinacea has some positive effect on immune function in animals, but the tests have been criticized for being too small and inconclusive. Animal studies cannot always be compared to human studies, but some evidence does exist that supports echinacea’s ability to boost the immune system. One large clinical trial found that echinacea increased the number of cells that were able to fight against leukemia. Other animal studies have indicated that the herb can help to regulate blood pressure and increase blood flow.

Most of us have heard about the possible benefits of echinacea in treating a variety of conditions such as bad coughs, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, asthma, depression, fever, and headaches. However, the only area that most people have not considered is the possible use of this herb for human cancer. The most recent research indicates that echinacea may have some benefit in reducing the risk of prostate and breast cancer. There are currently clinical trials underway with patients who have early-stage prostate cancer and patients with breast cancer. Most of these studies are being sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

The popularity of echinacea was revived in the 1970’s when it was discovered that turmeric, which is part of the ginger family, had anti-cancer activity. The turmeric, found in many spices and sauces, was initially used as an alternative medication for diabetes and heart disease. After it was found that a combination of vitamin C and black cohosh had very similar anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity, the two spices were often used interchangeably. Modern researchers now believe that echinacea and turmeric are effective in reducing the growth of some cancer cells. However, researchers are still studying whether echinacea and turmeric are effective against all types of cancer.

There are many different manufacturers of echinacea products, including GlaxoSmithKline, Kalo, Nature’s Sunshine, and Green Tea. Echinacea is available in different forms such as tablets, capsules, and teas. The reason for the wide variety of formats is so that people can choose the one that suits their individual needs the best. Echinacea peritoneum is sold under the trade names Abelia peritoneum, Astragalus vulgaris, Cicuta maxima, Cyperus rotundus, Dioscorea aromatica, and Hedera helix.
