MY REVIEW
This is the thirdMarlene Bell book I’ve read. The previous books were part of the Annalisse series.
I love a good murdermystery and that is exactly what author Marlene Bell and her MC Chef andCookbook Writer Laura Harris dish up in this entertaining novel. Laura returnsto her Texas roots after a stint as an award-winning chef in California, whereher brother runs the family restaurant.
Laura is halfway home afteran uneasy visit with old family friend Hattie Stenburg when a niggling feelingtells her to return to the house only to find Hattie dead in the guest house. She calls the police and has to convince them her death was murder only to findherself in their crosshairs. Hattie, it seems is worth a lot of money. Thesuspects soon pile up, including disgruntled neighbors, a missing caretaker, andLaura’s boyfriend. With little trust in the police, Laura investigates Hattie’sdeath herself.
At her side is her widowedfather who eyes an eye on her. But trouble is also brewing in her hometown whereher friend's bakery is hit with bad reviews and equipment failure. Are the tworelated? It’s all beginning to be too much. But Laura has a new friend, the sexysmelling lawyer who handles Hattie’s affairs, and things are heating up in thatdepartment pretty quick.
With plenty of clues, mysteries, twists and turns, Bell takes the reader of a ride as she spins hertale of greed and revenge.
I really enjoyed therural Texas setting with vivid descriptions of the countryside and life insmall town America. There’s a good romance brewing even as Laura comes to gripswith her current beau. Lots of layers, lots of details to wade through untilthe ultimate satisfying ending!
I recommend this bookto lovers of complex murder mysteries.

For Hugh, this is just a routine mission untilhe sees Lady Astrid. Since his seventh birthday, Hugh has had visions of awoman he knows only as Angel. When he sees Lady Astrid, he realizes he’s comeface to face with his Angel, only to learn she is to marry another. If thatwasn’t bad enough, someone seems to want Lady Astrid dead. Hugh will doanything to keep her alive.
Ienjoyed this historical romance. The writing is excellent, the story well told.I love when writers include a little mysticism in their stories and the Early MiddleAges seems especially suited for it. There is plenty of action and of courseromance. In the end, the guy gets the girl, and the bad guy gets what's comingto him!

Nicolette Croft can’t remember a time when she was not creating imaginary worlds inspired by her Hungarian and American ancestors. As a neuro-divergent learner, however, putting those stories to paper proved more challenging than imagining them. Because her determination would not allow her to settle, she pursued an English B.A. to improve her writing.
Young motherhood also brought unexpected challenges, which motivated her to pursue graduate work in twice-exceptional learners and education. She would later add an M.A. degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, specializing in neurodivergent people, trauma, and grief. Nicolette uses her natural gift of storytelling as an exploratory method for her clients.
The Curse of Maiden Scars is also an outgrowth of her personal journey and marks her first publication as a novelist, having previously published short fiction. When not at her counseling practice or researching historical facts for her latest story, Nicolette shares treasured time with family, friends, and her husband. Whether writing, cooking, traveling, or learning, the act of creation is always at the center of her colorful life.
