REVIEW

Part memoir, part how-to manual, part celebration of sport and finally part inspirational; this is how I woulddescribe DARE TO DREAM SCARY FAST, The Road to Kona. Wade Wilson was asuccessful CPA, husband and father of three when he set a goal to participatein a triathlon. For those of you who don’t know, this is a grueling three-partrace that includes swimming, biking and running. The race covers more than 100miles and can take the better part of a day to run. The Ironman triathlon is140 miles!

Wade shares that as a child hehad a competitive spirit but was never really encouraged by his parents to playsports. In fact, he dropped out of baseball after only one year when there wasno one to drive him to practice, games or even to just sign him up for theteam. It wasn’t until later in life that he dedicated himself to sport.

It was interesting to follow hisjourney from a beginner at running marathons to a full-blown elite athlete.Wade shares many lessons learned along the way. I like that despite the hoursspent training, his family remained his priority, and I loved how theysupported him in his efforts, attending races and encouraging him along hisjourney.

One of the big takeaways fromthis memoir is the message that it’s never too late to take up a sport. Age maylimit what you can do but with practice, perseverance and commitment you canaccomplish your goals.

I would recommend this book toreaders who enjoy memoirs, sports, and inspirational stories.

REVIEW

This is the second book by authorJames Wade that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Set in rural East Texasduring the Great Depression, I knew on page one that this book was gonna breakmy heart, and I wasn’t wrong.

Sixteen-year-old William lives ona farm with his sick mother. His father, Thomas Carter, is away, as he alwaysseems to be, trying to help WWI veterans get money owed to them. When the localdoctor says there’s no hope for his mom, except to get her to a hospital inHouston, William goes in search of his father. What he finds instead issomething entirely different.

A bit like the Odyssey, reminiscent of Huckleberry Finn and more recently This Tender Land by WilliamKent Krueger, the tale of William, his loyal friend Ollie, and girl on the run,Lena, will leave a mark on you, long after the last page is turned.

The writing is evocative. You cansee the cotton, feel the heat and humidity of a scorching East Texas day. Thedescription of the Big Thicket and its backward inhabitants pull you in sodeep, you feel you’re walking along the railroad track with William.

Along the way, the trio meet andinteract with a wide cast of characters — a few kind souls, most not, and somedownright evil people. I especially appreciated the ‘witch in the woods.’ Adiminutive, shotgun-toting healer with the ‘sight’. It is the witch who finallyopens William’s eyes about his father and his demons, his own personalstruggle, and sets him on the path home.

I highly recommend this book tolovers of Texas history, coming of age stories, and just a darn good read.

The Bullaun Stones: Irish Mystery

Whispersin the Hollow: Ireland’s Bullaun Stones

AcrossIreland’s green hills and ruined monasteries lie stones marked by deep, roundedhollows—bullaun stones, carved long ago, their purpose still cloaked inmystery.

Folkloretells us these stones could heal or curse. Pilgrims would circle small pebbleswithin the hollows, whispering prayers or casting away misfortune. Rainwaterpooled inside was said to cure sickness, for it was touched by the hand ofheaven.

AtGlendalough in County Wicklow, bullauns rest beside the ruins of St. Kevin’shermitage, worn smooth by centuries of devotion. In Clonmacnoise, they sitamong crumbling crosses and tombs, echoes of monks who may have used them inritual. In Kildare, at the holy well of St. Brigid, the water from these stonesstill draws the faithful.

Perhaps they were once tools, perhaps sacred vessels, but today they remain assilent thresholds between past and present. To stand before a bullaun is totouch a story half-forgotten, a prayer carved in stone, waiting for someone tolisten.

The Wheel Turns: The Autumnal Equinox

Whispers ofthe Equinox: A Turning of the Year

Honoring the turning of the wheel and the gifts of theharvest.

Twice a year, the sun pauses in perfect balance. On the autumnal equinox, dayand night stand as equals, just for a breath, before the long shadows of winterbegin to grow.

For the ancient Celts, this was no ordinary day. It was a turning point, athreshold between light and dark. The fields were heavy with fruit and grain, and the people gave thanks—for abundance, for survival, for the mysteries ofthe earth that fed them. They knew the balance would not last. Soon, the nightswould claim more of the sky.

At sacred sites like Loughcrew in Ireland, the rising sun poured throughstone-carved passages only on this day, illuminating symbols left by hands longgone. These alignments remind us that the equinox was not just marked butrevered, a cosmic whisper of harmony and change.

In myth, it is the moment when summer’s bright power wanes and the darker halfof the year begins to stir. Life and death, growth and decay, stand hand inhand. The veil between what is and what will be feels thinner, as if the earthitself is breathing in balance.

Today, the equinox still invites us to pause. To ask: What am I harvesting? What am I letting go? Where in my life do I seek balance?

The wheel of the year turns, as it always has. The light fades, the shadowsdeepen, and yet—within the darkness—the seeds of renewal wait.

Happy Fall,  Y'all.

REVIEW

This is the second book I’ve readby Texas author Laurie Moore-Moore, it’s book 2 in her Texas Brave and Strongseries. In book one, we met Sara, a young married woman whose husband decidedto move from Tennessee to Dallas, Texas. A dusty little town in the middle onnowhere. When Sara’s husband died, she started a dry goods store and made alife for herself in the fledging town. Falls in love and marries the localcotton broker, Benjamin Brown.

Book two opens in September 1861.The Civil War has begun and Texas has joined the Confederacy. Benjamin hasjoined the Texas Mounted Rifles and is leaving to patrol the state. While it isa relief that he won’t be going into battle, there are enemies enough in Texas, the Comanche, deserters, and more. With the agent gone, who will get the cottonto Matamoros where it is to be sold? Sara, of course. But there are no wagons,no horses, no mules. How will she transport the crop? With camels, of course!

I really enjoyed book one in thisseries and was excited to read the next chapter in Sara’s life. I will admitthat I had to swallow my distaste for the Confederacy and put it out of my mindwhile reading. As a historical fiction buff and a fellow Texan, I really appreciatethe history that fills the pages of this book. Details of life in the 1860sbring Sara and her world to life.

I had never heard the story ofthe camel caravan that carried the growers' cotton from Dallas all the way to Matamoros,Mexico. The fact that Sara was in charge makes the story even better. Theauthor takes us on the journey with her, to Austin, San Antonio, Fredricksburgand then south into the deserts of Texas. Along the way, the caravan isattacked by the Comanche, robbers and rogue soldiers. Sara faces it all with equanimity.

Accompanying Sara is an enslaved manwho is highly educated. He is there to help keep her safe, and he does, repeatedly. Although Sara calls him a friend and seems to treat him as herequal, she never once acknowledges the injustice of his enslavement. That was adisappointment for me.

Despite this, I found the bookenjoyable and certainly learned a lot about Texas during the Civil War. I lookforward to, hopefully, a third installment of Sara’s life. I highly recommendthis book to readers who enjoy historical fiction, Texas history and Women’shistory.

A Code of Knights and Deception by Eliza Hampstead

So,how to write a review of this amazing book by author Eliza Hampstead withoutgiving the plot away? First let me tell you that I absolutely loved this story. The FMC, Sophia, is a German woman on vacation in England with her husband andson. While on a visit alone to Warwick Castle, she is brutally attacked. Whenshe wakes up, she finds herself in bed, in a strange linen gown and, best orworst of all, in the year 1401.

TheEarl of Warwick and his retinue believe that Sophia is a young German woman, who traveling in England when her party was brutally attacked. She was foundnearby, the only survivor. Sophia must convince them that she is who they claimshe is.

AsSophia comes to terms with living in the past, the brutality of the world shenow inhabits horrifies her. Executions are swift, the poor are desperate, womenare inferior, and childbirth is a game of Russian Roulette and rape is aconstant threat. But even as she settles into her new life, she searches for away home.

Theone bright spot in this new life is Henry, a soldier in the service of RichardBeauchamp, the 13th Earl of Warwick. His azure blue eyes draw herin, as does his honed physique, and his raw sexuality. Ladies, you know whatcomes next.

ButHenry has a secret, a big, big secret that he cannot share with Sophia. But unfortunately,I can’t share it with you either as it would spoil the craziest plot twist I’veread in quite some time.

Ifyou love a great time travel story with lots of twists and surprises, you’lllove this book. Well-written with lots of historical details, it’s a grittytrip into the past. The romance is pretty spicy but the best part is thecharacters who you’ll find yourself cheering on.

FiveStars for me! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Warning:the 15th century was a violent time, and the author does a good jobof portraying it.

Chris’ relationship with Jenniegrows as each shares their backgrounds, revealing heartbreaking secrets. Can theygive each other what they need, or will they end up hurting each other? As theteam hurtles towards the state championship, will basketball come between Chrisand his new love? I found myself cheering them on, both on and off the court!

I really enjoyed this book bothas a sweet romance and the story of the boys who despite their obstacles, poverty, dyslexia, anger issues, and more, become not only better players andstudents but are given the chance to succeed in life. They are given the toolsto become the men they want to be.

The writing is great, the storypolished, and the pace is faster than a one-minute shooting drill. I recommendthis book to readers who enjoy sports romance, inspirational stories, and all-roundgood books.

Irresistible Calling by Sean Mitchell

Not usually a fan of memoirs, I was offered a few pages of Irresistible Calling to preview and was hooked immediately. The book begins in childhood. Sean and his parents moved from the dying steel town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Dallas, Texas to start a new life. The impetus of which was a holiday travel magazine! The family lives a typical suburban lifestyle of the era, the early 1950s. While the author is a few years older than me, I could certainly relate to his experiences. Sean was lucky enough to win a place at a prestigious private boy’s school in Dallas where he made lifelong friendships. From there it was on to college, and the heyday of the 1960s. Mitchell then takes us through his career in newspapers, first in Washington D.C., then Dallas and on to Los Angeles as a theater, film and music critic. Along the way, he interviews many of the biggest stars in Hollywood, from Ann-Margaret to Clint Eastwood. The most entertaining review/relationship is with Tommy Lee Jones, whom he met at the all boy’s school.
Along the way he talks about the cultural changes in America, his disappointment in the failure of the 60s counterculture, his parents’ yearning for ‘something more’ and his own desire to leave his mark in his chosen field of journalism. I really appreciated his parents’ story as they tried to break out of the rigid molds of the time. I loved that his mother found her joy and passion and was sad that his father remained unfulfilled.
I really enjoyed this trip through the America of the 60s-70s-80s. The writing is fantastic, and the book reads as more than just a memoir of one man, but also of the America he knew. I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good memoir, who are interested in American culture or just enjoy a great read.

REVIEW

Idon’t normally read children’s chapter books, but this one was too cute to passup. This is the sixth book in the Mischief series. In Flight Test 101, Lilly,Boris and Jack and Pearle are gearing up for their first flight test. Theyoungsters are fairies, called fairlings by their elders, and are working hardto perfect their flying skills. If they don’t pass their test, they must wait along time before they can retest.

Ofcourse there are obstacles to overcome, including fear and disabilities, whichI appreciated. The fairlings are supportive of each other and work collectivelyto pass the test, including delaying their test to keep together when Jackinjures himself in flying incident.

Withlots of wholesome messages about inclusivity, perseverance and cooperation, this is a great read for children ages 6-10. They will love the forest settingwith various animals; spiders and birds, and of course who could fail to love afairy?

Awonderful and heartwarming story, I rate this book 5 stars.
