Publication Date: March 10th, 2025Publisher: Stories All The Way DownPages: 249Genre: Medieval Historical Fiction
The Camino de Santiago de Compostela, now the most famous pilgrimage route in the world, was founded in the early ninth century, largely due to the efforts of Bishop Theodemir of Iria Flavia. As with most people of this period, nothing seems to be known of his early years. What follows, therefore, is pure invention.
Theodemir returns footsore and disillusioned to his uncle’s villa in Iria Flavia, where he meets Agnes, his uncle’s gatekeeper, a woman of extraordinary beauty. He falls immediately in love. But Agnes has a fierce, though absent, husband; a secret past; another name, Elswyth; and a broken heart.
Witteric, Theodemir’s cruel and lascivious uncle, has his own plans for Agnes. When the king of Asturias asks Theodemir to undertake an embassy on his behalf to Charles, King of the Franks, the future Charlemagne, Theodemir plans to take Agnes with him to keep her out of Witteric’s clutches.
But though Agnes understands her danger as well as anyone, she refuses to go. And Theodemir dares not leave without her.

REVIEW
I’ll start by saying I’ve readand enjoyed multiple books by the talented DiAnn Mills, although Christian fictionis not my go-to genre. But there is something about her well-plotted storiesthat really pulls me in and that is why I enjoy them.
In Canyon of Deceit we meetTherese Palmer, a wilderness expert who, like all Mills’ heroines, is damagedby life; in her case it was the death of her sister at a young age. But herfaith is strong. In fact, it is so integral to her life that she broke off abudding relationship with the handsome Texas Ranger, Blane Gardner, because ofhis lack of belief. When a colleague comes to her for help, his wife has beenbrutally murdered and his daughter kidnaped, she turns to Blane to help herrescue the child.
With his help, she tracks thekidnapers to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in remote West Texas, amysterious and harsh landscape that has a spare beauty all its own. Things donot go their way and suddenly the pair find themselves fighting for theirlives.
As with all Mills’ books, thereis a high level of violence in the story. The bad guys are pretty bad. But theshifting plot keeps you guessing as to who they actually are and wondering ifthey are they closer than you think?
The budding romance betweenTherese and Blane is sweet and slow-moving but gives you enough to keep youhopeful the pair will make a go of it. I really enjoyed the scenic descriptionsof the mountains and the dramatic scenes set in the national park. The mysterykept me guessing, and I did not see the end coming.
All in all, another great storyby a gifted mystery writer.
Five stars all the way.

The Winding Dirt Road by Jiu Da
Welcome to a stop on the Coffee Pot Book Tour for Jiu Da's book, The Winding Dirt Road. It sounds fascinating. We have a short excerpt for you, keep scrolling all the way to the bottom. The Winding Dirt Road
by Jiu Da
Publication Date: May 27th, 2025Publisher: Historium PressPages: 391Genre: Chinese Historical Fiction / Political Fiction
Written as an antithesis to all first-hand and second-hand propaganda written by both Chinese and foreign writers for China in the good part of the 20th century in a fictional form, this collection, through different times and lands, gives insights into how human docile nature and characteristics are manipulated and brought about cultural and social corrosion over the century. The outcome thus sees "a monumental loss breathtakingly massive than any period that preceded it." Subsequently, it foreshadows a system that "would bring out not the best but the worst in people, against people, any people." (Event Horizon)
The first story is written as an introduction in addition to the prologue. From there, the collection proceeds with interrelated subjects or topics, building up causes and factors. At every turn, it gathers momentum and convenes halfway through the book to form the major components of critical perspectives at a juncture.
Hoarded in the depth of memories of the past decades, this has been a work long overdue.

Jiu Da
For years, Jiu Da has been intrigued by the question of whether the environment makes us who we are or whether we are the ones that shape our environment.
For the good parts of early years, he stubbornly believed that motivation, talent, and effort could change the outcomes. It did not.
It was not until the virus hit while finding himself perching at home that he came to accept that the environment is indeed the hand that shapes human behavior.
It was during this time that he began his first work, drawing from his love in literature, history and a lifetime of seemingly useless yet fascinating knowledge hoarded in the depth of his mind.

REVIEW
Thisis the second book I’ve read in this series. To Condemn a Witch is a prequel tothe book To Rescue a Witch which told the story of Annaliese, a young witch, orphaned in the American Colonies, and the man, William MacLeod, who is sent toreturn her to England. To Condemn a Witch is the story of her mother Eleanorand how she came to be in Virginia. The first book was gritty but the second iseven more so.
Thestory centers on Fiona MacLeod, wife of William who hides her magic, her Aunt Matida,a witch condemned and burnt at the stake who now lingers in the otherworld, andEleanor, an unskilled witch, pulled from the drudgery of the workhouse to alife of luxury as the mistress of a lord. The three represent the maiden, mother and crone and together they must protect the prophesized child who willbring down a king.
Thebook contains quite a cast of unlikable characters, some so bad you hope they getwhat they deserve. I enjoyed the magicalelements, as Celtic mythology is an interest of mine, and I always enjoy awitchy book. The sex scenes were a bit much for me, but other readers willenjoy the steamy scenes. The ending was interesting, especially when the readerlearns who Annalise really is! I hope there is third book with her full story.
Iwould recommend this book to readers who enjoy dark historical fiction, witchytales, and mythology, just don’t mistake it for a historical romance. Therewere quite a few typos and other grammatical errors in my copy which I assumewill have been edited prior to publication. Based on that assumption I ratethis book 4 stars.

"Deus Lo Vult!"
Gilles is the natural son of the Earl Waltheof, executed by William the Conqueror for supposed treachery. Raised in Normandy by Queen Matilda of England, Gilles is a young servant of Robert, Duke of Normandy, when the first call for a Holy War against the infidel and for the liberation of Jerusalem is raised in Christendom. Along with thousands of others, inspired by a variety of motives, intense piety mixed with a sense of adventure and the prospects of richness, Gilles becomes a key and respected follower of the Duke of Normandy and travels through France and into Italy to the point of embarkation for Constantinople and the land of the Greeks.
In this epic first phase of a long and gruelling journey, Gilles begins to discover a sense of his own strengths and weaknesses, encounters for the first time the full might and strength of the Norman war machine and achieves his much coveted aim of knighthood, as well as a sense of responsibility to the men that he must now lead into battle.
The Will of God is the literal translation of the Latin phrase "Deus Lo Vult"; a ubiquitous war cry and a commonly offered explanation of all the horrors and iniquities unleashed by the First Crusade of 1096 to 1099, when thousands of Europeans made the dangerous and terrifying journey to the Holy Land and the liberation of Jerusalem. It is the first of two books on the subject.
Praise for Julian de la Motte:

Gilleslay, legs crossed and arms behind his head which rested upon his saddle. Hegazed up at the vast spectacle unfolded above him. His left side, facing thefire, roasted uncomfortably whilst his right side froze, one of the manyvagaries of life on campaign. His mouth was sour and acrid from a combinationof poorly cooked and very elderly mutton and local wine, thin, sour and acidic, unwilling gifts from the last village that he and his small command hadvisited.
Inthe jagged and flickering shadows on the other side of the fire his men alsorested, seemingly oblivious to the splendour and majesty above them. Ralph, commonly known as 'the Contentious' was once more expressing his views andopinions to a largely uninterested audience. Ralph, a man from the badlands onthe Normandy Brittany border, seemingly had a view and opinion on most things.Gilles allowed himself to listen for a while. Ralph had been on the lists ofthe Duke as long as Gilles could remember, as thickset and stocky as hismaster, he had been publicly whipped on a number of occasions for his views andthe loose tongued manner in which he voiced them, particularly for thoserelating to dogma and religion. Currently he was treating his largely indifferentcomrades to his views on the Holy Trinity. His almost casual remarks would havehad a churchman apoplectic with rage and reaching for his bell and candle.
Aflaring as a shrub of furze caught and crackled in the flames. Mixed withrosemary, it gave off a strong and aromatic scent amidst the brushwood, afurther deterrent to the swarms of midges. Along with snakes, large blackspiders with a life threatening bite and venomous toads that seemed to lurkunder every rock, they appeared to be a speciality of the region. The suddenblaze illuminated the usually genial features of Ralph in stark chiaroscuro ashe relentlessly continued to warm to his theme. Gilles surrendered his thoughtsto the skies above him, a vast dome of black nothingness, blacker than anythingelse he could imagine and dotted with countless shining stars more numerous, itseemed, than grains of sand upon the beach. Despite the oppressive heat of theday, in this strange and alien country the nights were bitterly cold. Gillesshivered and pulled his riding cloak more tightly about him. The horses stoodand fidgeted in the dark, tethered to a set of crude hitching posts hammeredinto the ground. Occasionally one or other of them stamped the ground or raisedits ears in alarm. There were, after all, wolves in these high hills and theysensed their presence.
