Blogging, WIP, and Publishing

Hey all! So I was on vacation (spring break) down in SC this week and I had a lot of time to think some things over. First of all, I’ve never been good at keeping a consistent blogging schedule. I’ll freely admit that, and I want to remedy it. To become a better blogger and author, I need some SORT of schedule.

Usually every couple of months I think about needing a schedule and I create one, keep it for a week or two, then fall out of it again. I’ve decided I need to take a more serious, well-thought out approach. For the next month or so I’m going to make a goal of posting AT LEAST once every two weeks. Then I’ll up it to once every week. Then, hopefully by the end of summer, I’ll have a specific day where I post each week.

That’s my goal as far as blogging in 2019 goes, and I’d appreciate any help or advice you can offer. This will be my first post following the new schedule.

WIP

Secondly, I made the decision that I’m going to take my time with my current WIP. With most of my other works I’ve been too hasty in writing and done almost no editing. I’ll admit that I was a bit of an armature when I wrote my first novella, The Lost Princess. I’ve improved since then, and I hope to write a full-length novel, properly edit it, and look into purchasing a unique cover. (not quite to that point yet)

Now… because of this my writing process might be a little slower than usual. I hope to write 50,000+ words. A true, full-length novel. I’ve been putting the rough draft of my story up on Wattpad, a chapter a weekend. (if you decide to read it, keep in mind that some things have changed since I put up the first few chapters) It can be found Here

Evie’s Empire
After discovering most of her life is a lie, Evie has a choice. Defend her birthright or take the easy way out?

My WIP is currently titled Evie’s Empire. I’ve got lots of plans for these characters, and today I hope to introduce you to a few of the many characters.

On the eve of Evelyn Cort’s sixteenth birthday, she discovers that most of her life is a lie. She thought her life was normal, and that her best friend was just like her. She was wrong. Her grandfather turns her life upside down and brings her to a whole new world of intrigue, quests, and deceiving parents. Her life is a lie, but something better awaits. Evie is heir to something much larger than she could have ever imagined, and someone is trying to take her birthright. A country that she knows nothing about is in her hands, and she has a choice. Defend her birthright or do the easy thing and remain as she is?

blurb- Evie’s Empire

Princess Evelyn Cort- more commonly referred to as Evie, nearly sixteen-year-old princess, unaware of the secrets that shroud her life

Prince Edmond Cort- thirteen, shadow to his sister in politics but interested in swordsmanship

Prince Frederick Cort- Evie and Edmond’s guardian for most of their lives, and father to the emperor

Sir Dustin Benes- seventeen-year-old guard who grew up with Evie and Edmond, deep set wish to protect his princess

Dame Margaret Benes- knight, mother to Dustin, and one of the few friends to Frederick

Emperor William Cort- sent his children away, distances himself from most people including his wife

Empress Lillian Cort- married William at a young age, but resents the arranged marriage and travels around the kingdom

Archduke Jasper Benoit- eighteen-year-old friend to the Emperor and part of the Cortesian court

As you can see, I have a fairly large cast, although the Empress, Dame Benes, and Frederick have a limited amount of page time.

Publishing

As I hinted at before, I hope to take a more serious and well-thought out route to publishing this time around. I’m not going to rush anything and in fact, I’m not even adding Evie’s Empire to Goodreads until later. I don’t have a publishing date either. My first goal is to finish. Then comes editing, before I worry about anything else.

Another thought I’ve had about publishing lately is hardcover books. They are terribly impractical for self-publishers but I’d like to have a hardcover copy for at least myself. Not dust jacket, as those are harder, but case wrap. I’ve been seriously looking into it and I think I can do it through Lulu, having them appear on Amazon. At any rate, if anyone has suggestions or has gone through hardcover publishing, please tell me!

As always, thanks for reading and please comment/like/share, whatever floats your boat, and I’d love to hear from you in person! You can contact me through my contact page.

Blackout Poetry

For English this week we had to make blackout Poetry will be one of the first three pages from Of Mice and Men. It was a really fun project, I’ve always liked blackout Poetry and thought about trying it. Here’s mine:

Recent Designs

Recently I’ve been working on other big projects, so, unfortunately, my blog has fallen to the wayside. I’m currently writing Evie’s Empire, a new story of mine. It’s fantasy and loosely based off of Atlantis. I’ve been posting the chapters on Wattpad here

Blurb

On the eve of Evie Cort’s sixteenth birthday, she discovers that most of her life is a lie. She thought her grandfather was normal. That she and her brother were normal. That the big, two-story house she’d lived in all her life had no secrets. That her best friend was just like her. She was wrong. Her grandfather abruptly changes and brings them all to a whole new world of intrigue, quests, and deceiving fathers. It turns out her house is hiding something, her grandfather’s whole life is a secret, and her best friend is trained in weaponry. Her life was a lie, and now it’s up to her to decide between an old world or a new world.

I’ve also been reading a lot and updating on my Goodreads. My third project lately has been design. Mainly improving my own design skills.
A few of my best:

I have a lot more found here, Designs in the Willows and all of these are available for purchase on the same website.

That being said, none of those are completely legitimate reasons to abandon you, readers. If you wish to be kept entirely up to date on my writing, follow me on Wattpad. For my design works, check Designs in the Willows. For my favorite books and general publishing updates with other works, follow me on Goodreads.

I’ll try to keep you updated as much as possible, and hopefully, I will post a better article about something else soon.

Thanks for reading and please comment/like/share, whatever floats your boat, and I’d love to hear from you in person! You can contact me through my contact page.

Reveries Co. Blog Launch!!

Hey guys! So you may have heard about this brand-new super-cool website for authors (indie and traditional) called Reveries Co. Now, If you haven’t heard of it- you’re about to! Today we’ll have Kellyn Roth speaking through text and telling you all about Reveries Co.! So get settled and enjoy Kell’s intro to Reveries Co.!

***

Hi there! This is Kellyn Roth (or Kell, if you prefer), and today I’m going to tell you a little about Reveries Co.

Here’s our story.

On September 8th, 2018, I was designing a site for my cover design business. As I drag-and-dropped the elements around, I realized I needed a shiny, flashy tagline. So I started thinking about my goals as a service provider.

I wanted to help authors like me succeed! I wanted to make sure that every writer got the best services, personalized to their needs, at the best prices.

But how could I do that? Editing is a service every author needs, but I’m not an editor, so I can’t offer editing.

Every blogger, writer, and author needs a website, but web design isn’t my specialty. In fact, I tend to get frustrated with all that coding and other nonsense; I like to keep it simple. But a lot of people need more than “simple.”

Suffice to say, I didn’t have the expertise I needed to offer a one-stop-shop for authors, bloggers, and other businessmen and women who needed those services but couldn’t afford them, couldn’t find the right providers, and even struggled to know what they needed.

So I began planning … and in no time,

Reveries Co. Was Born!

Partnering with my dear friend, Angela R. Watts, I came up with a business plan, an application form, and a website.

Now over fifteen service providers have joined our forces, from seasoned professionals like Savannah Jezowski, Jessica Greyson, and Abigayle Claire to up-and-coming entrepreneurs like Charis Rae, Jessie Bingham, and Michaela Bush.

Now we are dedicated to providing quality, personalized services for an affordable price. Our #1 goal is seeing you succeed in your writing endeavors. We even offer services such as consulting to give you the knowledge you need to go forward.

I firmly believe that with hard work and a little elbow grease, anyone can develop a career and business in the writing field. However, I acknowledge that we all need some help from time to time. We’re here to offer that help quickly and easily.

Our team is a carefully-selected task force of experienced designers, editors, proofreaders, and other professionals, several of whom are authors themselves. Most of them have multiple years of experience and all have proven themselves to be consistent and trustworthy workers who offer quality services.

All service providers are held to consistent standards of operation and output. We keep a close tab on the quality and proceedings of each service. We’re a team, and we function as one, helping each other succeed as well as authors.

New Editor + Announcements

So I’ve decided to try the new editor that WordPress is offering. I figured that eventually, I’d be the odd one out… the only one not using the new editor. At first, I absolutely hated it- I went right back to the old editor! But then I made a new website… and told myself I absolutely HAD to use the new editor for everything. I found that it’s not so bad, once you get used to it, and you have a lot more customization options! I don’t like the image functions when making a ‘gallery’ because they often make the images blurry, but there is a nice handy button you can click to have only one chunk of your post rely on the ‘classic’ editor, which is what I used for the image galleries.

Anyways, the verdict is that the new editor is pretty nice, once you get used to it. It did take me a while to figure out what did what, but once I did it’s been a breeze.

As for my announcement, I’ve started a new website! Have no fear, I’m not abandoning this one. It’s not a blog. Rather it’s a small business. You’re welcome to check it out, and keep in mind that I’ll be removing the graphic design sales from this website, so if you’re interested in buying one of my covers please head over to…

*drumroll*

http://designsinthewillows.wordpress.com

This site offers a lot of things… for low price. (but not low quality/quantity- I promise!)

I would encourage you to check it out!

Please comment/like/share, whatever floats your boat, and I’d love to hear from you in person! You can contact me through my contact page.

Angela R Watt’s Seek, review

To be completely honest, I’m not quite finished reading Seek. I think I’m just past half-way through. I’m sorry, Angela, that I didn’t quite finish, but it simply wasn’t a top priority between Nano and homework.

Onto the review, and happier things!

Blurb

Angel Cutler’s routine life is overturned when local ganglord Viktor Marino tries to kidnap her. When she finds out her adopted sister is back in town and working with Viktor, Angel has to run away with the protection of two total strangers. Can Angel have faith in God to protect her family when she can’t?

Elijah Davis has seen Viktor bleed once, and to save his family, he’ll make it happen again. But who is the One Eli can turn to when he realizes he can’t protect his loved ones alone?

Hiding from gangsters and gunfire, the trio struggle to seek God above all else and trust that His plan is greater than their own. Or Viktor Marino’s.

It is available for purchase on Amazon and can be viewed on Goodreads

Review

5 stars

Prose: 4/5

Romance: 5/5

Characters: 5/5

Plot: 5/5

Prose: I felt that this could be improved. Although it was very well done, at times I felt that it was too basic and could have been carried out better.

Romance: *silent applause* this was portrayed correctly, carried out well, and had me shipping! I’ll admit, I totally ship to of the main characters, spoilers removed, but I have to wait and see if they end up together!!!! I dearly hope they do. This was one of my favorite parts.

Characters: Yet another strong suit. I love all of them- from Asher to Angel. There were definitely ‘cliche’ characters like the witty sidekick, but they were carried out so well it’s not a bad thing.

Plot: I feel like this is one of the strongest points of the novel. The plot carried well, and it was always interesting. I never wanted to put it down.

Overall: This was a great book, well-written and with easy-to-love characters. I can’t wait to see where the author goes with this series!

Content: Keeping in mind that I haven’t quite finished it yet, this novel was very clean. It is very action-y and there are fight scenes. The characters do end up in a few bars, but they are never portrayed as good things.

Recent Designs/Nano Update

Hey! So I’ve been designing a lot recently, along with my Nano project. A lot of my designs are available for purchase here There are both e-book/front covers and full-sized covers.

Here are a few examples of what I’ve been designing in the last month:

[image error]Walls- $15
[image error]Ashes- $15
[image error]$5 for a 3D cover
[image error]Cup of Tea- $10
[image error]A Certain Sort of Princess- $15

All of these covers are available for purchase, as are 3D versions of them for only $5. I can also do a 3D version with no background, as a transparent PNG, or made a 3D version from an existing PNG cover file. (no JPEGS, though)

Nanowrimo updates:

As for Nano, I’ve been trucking along. Just so-so. Yesterday I was 300 words over my goal, today I haven’t written yet. (I’m planning to after this blog post) I’m over halfway through, and I’ve certainly had days where I missed my goal (by a lot) or overshot my goal. (again, by a lot) I don’t seem to be good and consistency, but then again, I never have been. Here are a few snippets from my writing.

title: A Baby Girl Named Elizabeth

genre: question mark, mainstream, TBD

cover: can be viewed here along with my mood board

blurb: can be viewed at the link above, along with some character bios

Snippet 1:

Suddenly, I couldn’t stand it anymore. Something in me snapped. “Stop it!” I cried, turning on him. “Stop asking questions and answering them yourself. Did you really want to know anyways?”

He stared, Thomas gaped, I slammed the car door.

Snippet 2:

It was a typical Monday morning, and at eight o’clock the coffee shop was not so busy. It was quiet in town, compared to the festivities of the week before, and although my coffee was slightly over-sugared, I smiled. I was home. All was right in the world, at least until smoke drifted across the seat to the News and Luck Coffee Shop, where I sat with my papers and coffee. It wound its way in a curling manner through the windows, filling the room with the harsh, bitter scent of burning metal.

Snippet 3:

“Ma’am, you have to stay behind the tape,” a policeman said quietly, but firmly. “As soon as the ambulance arrives we will inform you-”

“You don’t understand- that’s my daughter!

Snippet 4:

“Mr. Phelps is waiting for you in the room beside Mrs. Phelps,” she stated calmly. “We will see the doctor first.” she stopped beside a room and opened the door. “The doctor is waiting in here.” she said, and ushered us in.

“Mrs. Milton, Miss Webber,” he said, looking at Mrs. Milton gravely. “You’d better sit down.”

Snippet 5:

I hesitated for a moment, floundering for an answer. Heard what? Then it hit me. “Oh, oh yes. I’m terribly sorry.”

“Oh that’s alright-” he stopped. “Well, it isn’t, not really, but you know what I’m getting at.”

Snippet 6:

I turned to the child curiously, and put my hand on the window.

She was wrapped in a hospital blanket, a wisp of dark hair peeking out. Her eyes were closed, and she seemed to be content.

I hope you enjoyed the snippets! The last five are from chapters 1 + 2, but the first is from a later chapter.

Bye for now!

NANOWRIMO Project

So this year I’m participating in NANO! I’ve never done it before, or technically speaking written 50,000 words on one project, so I guess its sort of a ‘here goes nothing’ project.

Anyways, I’m writing a new story that I don’t think I’ve talked about before. At least, not on here. It’s called A Baby Girl Named Elizabeth and is the first book in The Hillsbury Tales. The title, cover, and blurb are all subject to change right now because I (obviously) haven’t written the book yet.

Blurb:

“It was a typical Monday Morning…”

Adalyn Webber is back in her childhood town- Hillsbury. She’s confident of a few things:

Elizabeth Phelps was just in a Car accident

Widowed Andrew Phelps wants her to care for his infant

She’s totally going to do it

When Adalyn Webber moved back to small-town Hillsbury to help care for her Great-Uncle Thomas Baker’s house, she never expected to witness a car accident, which quickly led to a trip to the hospital, and a funeral. Infant Elizabeth’s father, now a widower, hires Adalyn to care for the baby while he, Andrew Phelp, and the infant’s grandmother, Mrs. Milton, work.

As Adalyn cares for Elizabeth, over time she discovers that she cares for much more than just the child, but will Mrs. Milton be willing to let romance blossom? And when Adalyn’s new friend, Officer Everett, reveals that he’s been searching for a wife, conflict grows in her heart.

I’m planning on posting some snippets and such, but I’m not sure if that will happen. For now I’ll just introduce some of the characters.

Adalyn Webber

Adalyn is 25 years old. She lived in Hillsbury until she was 20, then moved away to a bigger city for five years of her life. She just came back to live with her great-uncle Thomas Baker, who owns the coffee shop News and Luck Coffee Shop but lives out of town. (his wife of thirty years died two years ago with no children or young relatives except Adalyn) As a child, Adalyn knew of Anthony Phelps but didn’t think much of him because he moved away when she was six. Adalyn is a serious person, about 5’6” with brown-blond hair and bright eyes. She tends to be categorized as ‘odd’ and her hobbies consist of writing, baking, and child care. She wanted to become a teacher, but due to being orphaned at 17 didn’t have the means for college. Her senior year she lived with her great uncle and aunt.

Anthony Phelps

Twenty-six-year-old Anthony had only been married and living in Hillsbury for four years when his wife of five years died in a tragic car accident, leaving him with three-month-old infant Elizabeth Phelps. Although he lived in Hillsbury until he was seven, he moved away and although his parents still live a state away, to please his mother-in-law, he and Elizabeth moved to Hillsbury after their marriage. At 6’1” Anthony stands just above average, has dark hair and soft brown eyes. He’s kind and sensitive, but stubborn. He works at the local factory in an office job as the Human Resources Manager.

Elizabeth Phelps

Three-month-old Elizabeth’s mother died in a tragic car accident. Now left with only a busy father (Anthony Phelps)and mother-in-law (Mrs. Milton) in Hillsbury, neither of which have time out of their jobs to care for an infant, Elizabeth’s care falls on Adalyn Webber, a single young woman with a heart for children.  Elizabeth has the dark hair of her father, but the blue eyes of her mother. She is, for the most part, a happy child.

Mrs. Milton

Despite coming off as strict and uncaring, sixty-seven year old Allie Milton loves her daughter’s family. After her husband of forty year’s crushing death, and then her daughter’s death seven years later, Mrs. Milton does not want to lose any more family members, to death or remarriage. Mrs. Milton is fairly short, at  5’4”, but wears heels and appears taller. With her graying hair and fading brown eyes, she certainly appears to be the ever-loving grandmother to outside eyes. Mrs. Milton is a bit of a clean-freak (but doesn’t enjoy cleaning) and works at the law firm as a secretary.

Thomas Baker

Forty-five-year-old Thomas was only twenty when his brother’s only granddaughter was born but never dreamed that one day she would be his only remaining relative, besides her popular and uncaring older brother. Now, a year after his beloved wife’s death, Thomas continues to run News and Luck Coffee Shop on main street and lives with Adalyn. She cares for his house and food, and in exchange gets to test his new coffee recipes and live at his house. After a tragic car accident in front of his coffee shop tears Elizabeth Phelps away from a loving mother, husband of five years, and three-month-old daughter, Thomas is more than willing to let Adalyn care for the infant Eliza, whose father and grandmother both work.

There’s also Officer Everett Johnson, mother-of-four-children Sophia North, nurse Mary-Margaret Flory, and lawyer Ryan Blake, but they don’t really come in until later and are only side characters in the first book.

So! That’s my 2018 nano project!

NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month)

I’m sure at least sixty percent- if not more- of you know what NANOWRIMO is. If not, let me explain. NANO is a writing event in November. The goal is to write a whole novel (50,000 words) by the end of NANO.

I’ve never actually done NANO before, in the past, I’ve either been moving states or working on editing or just starting a writing class. I’ve also found a lot of excuses for not attempting this great feat. Excpecially because technically speaking I’ve never written a 50,000-word novel. Yet.

This year I’m hoping to work on a (yet another) new project of mine. For now, I’m abandoning all others in favor of…

(dun dun dun..)

A Baby Girl Named Elizabeth, The Hillsbury Tales #1 (ABE for short)

More info on ABE and my NANO dashboard can be found here: https://nanowrimo.org/participants/lo...

The blurb:

“It was a typical Monday Morning…”

Adalyn Webber is back in her childhood town- Hillsbury. She’s confident of a few things:

Elizabeth Phelps was just in a Car accident

Widowed Anthony Phelps wants her to care for his infant

She’s totally going to do it

As Adalyn cares for Elizabeth, over time she discovers that she cares for much more than just the child, but will Mrs. Milton be willing to let romance blossom? And when Adalyn’s new friend, Officer Philip, reveals that he’s been searching for a wife, conflict grows in her heart.

*temporary title, and blurb*

I’m including an expert too:

It was a typical Monday morning, and at eight o’clock the coffee shop was not so busy. It was quiet in town, compared to the festivities of the week before, and although my coffee was slightly over-sugared, I smiled. I was home. All was right in the world, at least until smoke drifted across the seat to the News and Luck Coffee Shop, where I sat with my papers and coffee. It wound its way in a curling manner through the windows, filling the room with the harsh, bitter scent of burning metal.

Screech.

I put down my mug, the illusion of a perfect morning ruined and looked out the window. The scene played out in slow-motion before me. A scream ripped the air as two vehicles collided. Glass shattered and flew through the air like tiny daggers, catching rays of sunlight and throwing hauntingly beautiful and awful rainbows about the street. A third car screeched to a stop, nearly colliding with the other cars before silence fell. The birds stopped chirping, and fluttered away, the silence blanketing the street.

Again, my posing is going to be very sporadic (as it has been) and I’m sorry but my blog is not my top priority right now. So… it sort of falls into the “I’ll do it tomorrow” category. Again, I’m sorry but I can’t do anything about it.

ANYWAYS, hopefully, I’ll post again soon (about what I don’t know) and enjoy your Monday!
