Goodreads Review: The Mitten by Jan Brett

The MittenThe Mitten by Jan Brett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Mitten is a Ukrainian folktale that Jan Brett beautifully adapted and illustrated. I loved seeing the actions on the same page of both the boy and the animals who found the mitten in the snow. (Neither one is aware of the other.) And I especially like the keyhole in the shape of a mitten that Jan Brett used to show you the alternate action. Everything fit together perfectly when the story ends with a puzzled grandma looking at the mittens!

Goodreads Review: The Snowman

The SnowmanThe Snowman by Raymond Briggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Everything is better when you can share it with a friend. Sharing a friend’s ordinary can be quite extraordinary when it’s new to you. And you can return the favor by introducing a friend to your routine or hobbies. The little boy in The Snowman is so excited to make his snowman. He can hardly sleep that night. When, to his surprise, the snowman becomes alive, he can’t wait to show the snowman all the things in his house — things this snow...

5-Star Review for Bella the Umbrella!

I’m shocked!  Bella the Umbrella has only been published for 3 days now and yesterday I found out the eBook had just received a 5-star review by Readers’ Favorite.  I’m so honored to have the first two books in the series both receive 5 Stars.  It certainly inspires me while I’m working on Book Three of the series.  (If you read Bella the Umbrella, then you know what the next book is about!)

Thank you to my kind readers and reviewers!  I appreciate reading how much these books are appreciated...

Goodreads Review: Another book by Sally Huss

Don't Eat Your Soup with a Fork (Silly Rhyming Bedtime Story/Picture Book About Using Common Sense)Don’t Eat Your Soup with a Fork by Sally Huss

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Don’t Eat Your Soup with a Fork is a manners book, to be sure. However, its over-the-top visual style is what my son likes. I liked the ending message of giving thanks for the food you eat, as well as to the ones who provide it and share it with you. As a mom, not one but two of the “don’t do this” examples made me cringe. My son can be a bit contrary and try things people tell him NOT to do. Lucky for me, he agreed with th...

Goodreads Review: Triangle

TriangleTriangle by Mac Barnett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another winner for my reluctant reader! My son loved the karma that followed Triangle’s sneaky trick on Square. However, he answered the author’s final question to the readers with a resounding “No!” (My son thinks Square was just trying to cover up HIS mistake.)
I loved the story, the simple art, the trek through the shapes and shapeless, and, yes, the karma. They all added up to a wonderful new book from Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen.

Goodreads Review: Duck! Rabbit!

Duck! Rabbit!Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a cute, back-and-forth story of a difference of opinion! I confess I see the rabbit more than I see the duck. Personally, I think it’s because the “creature” is just all white with a black outline. If the “beak” was pink (for an albino duck) or a light gray even, I would believe it more as a “duck” than as a “rabbit.” I’m not saying I don’t love the simplicity of the illustrations, but I think I needed more detail (or color) t...

Goodreads Review: Take Care, Good Knight

Take Care, Good KnightTake Care, Good Knight by Shelley Moore Thomas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The three little dragons want to do good but sometimes it takes a little help from a friend, the Good Knight, to get the job done right. The old wizard’s kittens need someone to take care of them while the wizard is away. The little dragons agreed to do it and the wizard left detailed instructions. What could go wrong? This story highlights the importance of effective communication! Yes, the misunderstandings are funny, bu...

Goodreads Review: Chicken Wants to Roller Skate

Chicken Wants to Roller Skate (J-Tech Creation Learn to Read Book 3)Chicken Wants to Roller Skate by Elsa Takaoka

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Chicken is determined to roller skate. And she does. Just like for all of us who try something new, there is a learning curve and some bumps and bruises along the way. I absolutely loved the illustrations. They had movement and color and a simple but beautiful style. I also loved that chicken used her new skills. However, I was completely thrown by the ending. Maybe I’m too empathetic, but I felt Chicken would have been ver...
