Goodreads Review: Jake Bakes Cakes

Jake Bakes Cakes. A Silly Rhyming Children's Picture BookJake Bakes Cakes. A Silly Rhyming Children’s Picture Book by Gerald Hawksley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One ton fun! Sweet, fun rhymes. And cake, too? Yum! Count me in! An imaginative book to read to your young ones (since some of the vocabulary is not early-reader simple). And the illustrations are just perfect– brightly colored and simply drawn. Jake is my kind of guy, always thinking of others and their wants and needs. (Even robots!) I want to see Jake open a bakery in my town. (Sigh.)
Howev...

Goodreads Review: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick

The Mysteries of Harris BurdickThe Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Imagination. The essential ingredient in a children’s book. This unusual picture book invites the reader to add more imagination to these odd enigmas. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. For this book, I could make up more than a thousand words for each of these beautifully rendered black-and-white pictures.
Who was this Harris Burdick and why did he appear in a children’s book publisher’s office now...

Goodreads Review: Harry’s Lovely Spring Day

Harry's Lovely Spring Day (Harry The Happy Mouse #1)Harry’s Lovely Spring Day by N.G.K.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I must start out saying I love the rhyming (even the repeating beginning and end). The illustrations are absolutely divine and I love the use of the circular illustrations. However, I just can’t see the story as anything but a moral-delivery vehicle. Also, I was thrown off by the proportions in different parts of the book. All the animals seem to be the same size but, in the city, everything was human size (even the cars, bikes and m...

Goodreads Review: Two from the Snowman Paul series

Mother's Day with Snowman PaulMother’s Day with Snowman Paul by Yossi Lapid

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

These books so remind me of the story/song Frosty the Snowman and another book I’ve reviewed, the pictures-only book from Raymond Briggs, The Snowman. This first book in the series calls out for a sequel with lovable Paul the Snowman. The other book in the series I just read was the timely Mother’s Day with Snowman Paul. Like Frosty and Briggs’ Snowman, Snowman Paul d...

Goodreads Review: The Snowy Day

The Snowy DayThe Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I didn’t grow up with snow so I do have a fascination with it, although I prefer warmer weather! The Snowy Day highlights the wonder of snow. One of my favorite books that I owned growing up was Peter’s Chair by the same author, Ezra Jack Keats. In The Snowy Day, Peter tries to experience everything you can do with snow, except for a snowball fight with the big boys, which he avoids! He plays in it, stomps in it, and builds with it. He...

Goodreads Review: My Monster Farts by Kate Clary

My Monster FartsMy Monster Farts by Kate Clary

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What can I possibly say about this book? The title says it all. Zach has a great relationship with his best (monster) friend Lenny. So what if no one else can see Lenny or hear him speak. They certainly can hear and smell his farts! What I can’t understand is why a teacher would make a child stay in from recess just because everyone thought the student was farting (I’m guessing) “on purpose.” The rest of the story makes perfect sense! How...

Goodreads Review: The Lonely Alien by James Perez

The Lonely AlienThe Lonely Alien by James Perez

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The cover caught my eye. I love different styles for children’s book illustrations and the 3D cutout felt shapes were unique and still kid-friendly. The funky font was perfect (except for the green type on red felt background). The story hooked me further. The sadness and frustration of the little alien being rejected again and again. The courage of the little alien to stand up for what’s right and the resulting reward for the heroic act...

Goodreads Review: Sam Likes Jam by Niki Morris

Sam Likes JamSam Likes Jam by Niki Morris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love Sam Likes Jam by Niki Morris, even though I’m not fond of jam!  I love strawberries, the color red, and simple recipes I can make with my kids.  This picture book is the reason I love picture books.  Perfect for toddlers to preschoolers (and their parents, of course).  I also like the recipe the author posted on her Facebook page that uses chia seeds.  I have to try that recipe, too.

My kids are school age now but I miss those simple...

Goodreads Review: The Little Leprechaun Who Loved Yellow!

The Little Leprechaun Who Loved Yellow! (Happy Children's Series, #2)The Little Leprechaun Who Loved Yellow! by Sally Huss

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I know I’m a bit late for St. Patrick’s Day but the message of this book is timeless. I recommend this book for PARENTS who need to remember what’s important to their own child/children. When I told my son the premise of this story and asked him what advice he would give the leprechaun, he did not hesitate when he said, “Do what you want.” Kids want to follow their hearts naturally, but adults have rules and differe...
