America - Capitalism and Socialism
I posted a response on Medium to Umair Haque's article "What Happens After Capitalism?"
He argues that what will happen is there will be a melding or blending of the two into a new synthesis. I have bad news, America has been doing this since day one.
This nation was found on two bed rocks... individual religious freedom and individual business freedom. The two keep each other in check for the religious side provides the morality to keep at bay the greed from capitalism taking over.
In my future America, a country besieged with two great ecological disasters, the nation continues to survive despite the 40 years of despot presidents. This is because we are Americans founded on the principals outlined in Preamble of the Constitution.
It is "We the People" who make this nation happen. We do this every day when we go to work, and every time we vote.
Do we have our problems? You bet. Hell, we had a Civil War! We even fought the British twice!
It would take a lot for America to be wiped off the map. To become like the Roman Empire of old.
No, I don't see this happening at this point in time.
Not until humanity has reached for the stars do I see America fading into a quaint country in the backdrop of a multitude of worlds scattered amongst the heavens.

Rosella's future time and the Despot Presidents
I wrote on Medium a commentary concerning NYT reporter, Jason Stanley’s YouTube on the traits of a Fascist. While I disagree with use of the word in this context (fascism comes from Italian meaning a political group of men or a political group of men against communism), I will let some of this slide due to modern sensitivities created by World War II. With that being said, Hitler was a complete tyrant. Just making that clear.
In my dystopian future America, politics has gone awry. We end up with 40 years of despot presidents. You should not confuse despot with tyrant. Despot is a lesser version of a tyrant. An absolute ruler, but they could be good or evil. The problem is despots are just control freaks and because of that they want to hold on to the reins of power as long as possible.
The Rosella Tolfree series is set in the middle of all this time period. So twenty years of bad presidents has already occurred, and another twenty years has still to come.

Social Media Gone Wrong
If you think its bad now...
Well in my future time, social media and the internet evolve into the Social Media Net. It feeds people constant information as AI algorithms make constant adjustments to meet our "tribal needs".
This is why the period of time known as the Ross Perot Period of Presidents is just so chaotic socially. Things have become very polarizing and radical groups run a muck socially across the land.
Our two party system has collapsed. Multiple parties are trying to obtain the White House. All want to control Congress. The Supreme Court is paralyzed.
The police try to stop things, but the courts have supported crazy ideas like the right to kill people with a gun.
States have legalized drugs in order to pay for massive Federal debt charges to them, and the DEA worries more about illegal drug running between states than what's happening in Columbia.
Meanwhile a new paramilitary organization from the National Park Service is patrolling Federal lands to stop illegal drug and other activities.
These are the times of the Rosella Tolfree stories.
This is the Second Age of Humanity.

I just put up on Medium the following-
Historically Significant Political Events Prior to the Ross Perot Period of Presidents
It tells about three major historically important events prior to the time period when the Rosella Tolfree stories are taking place (Ross Perot Period of Presidents).
One would think the fact my world has its ice caps melted and there is a volcanic basalt trap in the middle of America would be pretty significant, but social-politically no environmental stuff was as important as these three events.
The most important was done so backdoor by Congress that it went unnoticed by most except those who needed to know.

I'm planning to run a little side bar Special Ops story line Medium that is part of the mix but from a different perspective and different situations.

Especially POTUS Veronica Simmons (the worst U.S. President ever-- she actually goes to jail with consecutive life sentences).

This YouTube from PBS Space Time presents some interesting timelines on how the universe will end depending upon different models.
This presents some interesting challenges as an author writing this far into the future.
The first problem has to do with the universe is decaying away to nothing, so how do you build a society on matter that is fading away to nothing? The presenter is assuming that humanity has some material technology present, but do they? Figuring out how to build a space society in a decaying universe is a true challenge.
The second problem is how long are humans living by this point in time? Have we conquered longevity to the point a single human life span is billions of years?
The third problem is how many humans are there? As species live longer and longer there is fewer and fewer of them. So one could imagine there would be few humans living at this point.
The fourth problem: Are there any other intelligent species (created or otherwise)?
The fifth problem is the technology advanced enough to travel into parallel universes? Could mankind be extracting materials and energies from these universes to help deal with issues in our current advance decayed universe? The presenter suggests that parallel universes may occur as part of the decay which gives hope for humanity, but what happens if these parallel universes operate with human killing physics?
These and many more questions happen before you even think of a plot.

The NOM Dictionary and Charlottesville, VA
Today is the one year since the sad events of Charlottesville, VA. And I don't support any ideas of supremacy of any person over another through whatever science, dogma, or crazy crap a person or group may come up with. We are all human and pretty much the same like or not.
While I cannot change what took place last year or what may come, as a science fiction writer I offer the following political dystopian future to ponder. In my future world there is a group called the Neo-Obliteration Movement which goes around trying to erase all symbols, words, and cultural concepts of hate. They are extremist in their ideologies and protest national Civil War parks and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum as symbols of hate to be removed from society. They want nothing more than to expunge from society every reference to hate so we have a culture that knows of no wars, racial hatred, or any other form of hate as if these things never happened. This story bit is part of this group’s history.
The Superior Court of the County of Los Angeles heard a civil case involving hate speech brought forth by the Neo-Obliteration Movement of Southern California, LLC in the hopes to overturn decades of court cases, such as the famous Beauharnais v. Illinois permitting hate speech. The Neo-Obliteration Movement was trying to get the County of Lost Angeles to approve a list of non-offensive words and to ban a specified list of words. Called the NOM Dictionary, this was an attempt to clean up the hate speech in society. The case won at the Superior Court level but was later overturned in subsequent courts due to the Federal Supreme Court precedent on this issue. President Veronica Simmons took note and created the Agency of Morally Correct Speech which went around trying to promote the NOM Dictionary. This move just inflamed hate groups like the KKK and the Alt-Right who launched lawsuit after lawsuit in each jurisdiction the Agency pushed its agenda. In the most unlikely team up was when the Agency pushed to remove the Federal land donation to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum as an appeasement to the NOM base. Aside from Jewish groups who came to protest this move, U.S. Neo-Nazis groups joined against the move because they considered NOM a threat to their Nazi hateful heritage. President Simmons washed her hands of the whole affair blaming a Congressman for the Agency idea to gather votes.
