Day 4,102: Cheek Lady

Gonna get back to answering prompts tomorrow, I think, but for tonight…

Thinking about David Lynch today. Have been for the past couple days, ever since hearing of his passing. We did a deep dive on him around this time two years ago, and I mostly remember being surprised about how much of David made sense to me. Like, it wasn’t a mystery at all what he was trying to do, which included all the stuff that doesn’t make sense. He put A LOT of stuff in his movies that didn’t even make sense to hi...

Day 4,101: Foooood

Didn’t do much today. Still getting my LA legs underneath me. I went and got food. That was good. Washed my car. Picked up a scrip for Liz. Cleaned a little bit. But mostly watched Wrexham and just let the day slip.

Tired. Gonna be tired tomorrow, too, I think. But we’ll see. I want to read.

Night night.

Day 4,100: The Pack

The pack is back together. Joy is sleeping on my lap and Coops is down at the end of the bed with his sweater on, all snuggled into Liz’s extra blanket, the pink one. This is home.

Slept in. We woke up around 11, which means we got a full night’s sleep. Whew. Got up, ate some food quick, and then went over to Stephen and Thida’s to pick up the pups. No issues with them. It was a good visit. We caught up. Then came home and ate some lunch (Mr. Pickles).

Mustered up the energy to go to Costc...

Day 4,099: Carraldo

I watched Fitzcarraldo on the flight home. It was so good! And by that I mean…it was very, very clunky in parts, I’m not actually sure that Klaus Kinski worked as the main character (in that he was tooooo crazy, maybe?) even though he certainly looked the part, the all-sound-was-dubbed-in-later-including-all-dialogue thing always throws me a bit and makes the performances feel like they’re at arm’s length, and a multitude of other aspects of filmmaking that we’d simply just do differently these ...

Day 4,098: Blissed

Our last full day. Sigh. It’s been a good trip.

We went up to a spa today and got massages together. Afterwards, we both decided that getting massages is probably a great way to start a trip, at least in Hawaii, where everything is better the more you relax. The massages were great. Five stars. I needed it, too. My neck and back were pretty tight. Got some of it worked out. Not all, for sure, but some, which is still a victory.

Took a nap. Met up with the Lundy’s and watched the best sunse...

Day 4,097: Waipa

We did an amazing tour today of an ahupua’a on Kauai called “Waipa.” It means, essentially, a subdivision of Hawaiian land. They were basically watersheds, and one group of people—with one person in charge—were responsible for each of these districts that had its own water source. On an island, that essentially meant a valley, because all of the fresh water came from rainfall up on the top of the volcano, and then it ran down into the fanned-out, eroded valleys and then into the sea. So, the Haw...

Day 4,096: Napali

Making this another quick one because we get up early again tomorrow BUT…

Woke up early and caught our boat tour out to the Napali coast…which was SPECTACULAR. We saw whales jumping and slapping their tails, we saw bottlenose dolphins who are apparently dicks, we saw spinning dolphins which are apparently sweethearts—they have babies with them who were doing flips and shit out of the water, it was so great—and lots of incredible, remote beach cliffs, but the coolest part of the tour had to be...

Day 4,095: Goob Night

A quick one tonight because it’s late and we’re up decently early in th morning, but here’s the rundown:

We got up and did a nice, chill morning. Made brekky for each other, then walked along the beach path.

THEN…packed up and set off for our whale watching boat tour. It. Was. AWESOME. We tracked a juvenile humpback whale, and they put a show on for us. So many breaches. Flukes flying all over the place. Tail up in the air. Everything. Just exuberance.

Then Liz and I again went off on o...

Day 4,094: Luau

Today, we went to the shelter and picked up a dog to go and take on a “field trip” around the island. Her name was Crisco, like the shortening, and she was 9 years old. A big girl, about 60 lbs (which is big, at least, for us), and clearly had been a mother to puppies several times. She had white around her face, the softest ears, and she loved the car. It was the only place she fell asleep in, which was so satisfying to see. Otherwise she was pretty much panting all day, ie- she was stressed. B...

Day 4,093: Blazes

The fires continue in LA. The Palisades fire has crawled up through the hills and is encroaching, now, onto the valley pretty close to where I live. Far enough away, fortunately, that the evacuation posts they’re setting up are only a few blocks away from our house, so I think that bodes well, but still…this whole shebang is far from over.

It’s definitely the worst fires LA has ever seen so long as I’ve lived here. Truly catastrophic stuff. I’m optimistic our house will be fine. We’re hosting...
