"How do you explain the beauty of creating and the wonder of having created?" - Mira Abdullah, p.67. That's my favourite quote in the book. Disclaimer that I'm a friend of Anna Tan and was one of her beta readers who read through the first draft of t ...more |

I bought this book at the OzAsia Festival 2023 in Adelaide and picked it up for 4 reasons; (1) I met the author; (2) I saw that it had won a literary prize; (3) I felt it was surely going to be difficult to find in a Malaysian bookstore; and (4) woul ...more

The editor Sharon Bakar gifted me this book receently, and I had time to read through all 32 authors' short stories, non-fiction, flash fiction and poetry. It is quite a hodgepodge of writing, with no discernible theme except that these are writers w ...more

I read the Fixi Novo edition of this short story collection and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Especially enjoyed that the characters are loosely linked; they are like Easter eggs and that's what kept me wanting to read the next story, to find out whic ...more

I liked this book more than I thought I would. I had seen some not-so-good reviews here and was a bit skeptical at first. I bought this in Gerakbudaya Bookstore, Penang, Malaysia in July/August 2023 when the author was here to promote her book with a ...more

I discovered Dias Novita Wuri's book at the OzAsia Festival 2023 in Adelaide, and immediately felt this was something quite "radical" that I would like. Birth Canal (2023) is the English translation of Jalan Lahir, published in 2021, and I was surpri ...more
"After short introduction by Anna Tan, the editor, about the theme of this zine, the zine opens with a poem written by Mark Walter remarking how short life is. Then, it was followed by Farouk Gulsara recollection on his fond boyhood days, I like it ve"

I bought this book at George Town Lit Fest 2023 where the author was launching the book. Really loved the stories and finished it in two sittings. As the blurb says it's 25 stories, but some are really short flash fiction pieces (1-2 pages only). Sur ...more |

The forty or so wooden homes are tucked in a silent compound, away from the tourists browsing the night market along Jalan Batu Ferringhi.”

“My EX5 is spray-painted a teal green, and my seats are upholstered with Hello Kitty on the pillion cover. That's my girl and I'm not ashamed of her. ...
They say it takes a real man to like Hello Kitty, and I'm a real man.”

“Faizal's accusation about not knowing how to honour one's father had stung badly, even though he barely knew the Corporal. His mad laughter rang again in his mind. In being angry and showing his emotions, Jeffrey had been laughed at instead of being feared. That was what angered his most.
Old Mr Kong's marble photograph was faded and dirty too. He looked young, and the colourless oval made him appear even more distant, as though from a different time. Jeffrey brushed a hand over his Pa's face, and now he felt a tinge of envy over Faizal's love for old Roslan. There are things a son must do for his father, if he loves and honours him. What would he do to honour his father, though he may not love him? Jeffrey reached into his pocket for a handkerchief and wiped his father's photograph. Tomorrow he would report early for duty, and tell Sergeant Wong about his scuffle with Faizal.”
