Why it's hard to successfully sell our passion projects (and what to do about it)
Why is it hard to sell art... or anything you passionately create?
When we create something, we're hugely biased toward it.
We took a long journey to get there, to make that vision a reality.
Yet we’re surprised when the thing doesn't sell well. Others just “don’t get it!”, we think. Here’s what happened – your experience of the "aha!" moments, during the long journey of creating, all happened within your own experience… nobody saw it. Therefore, you’re the only one who finds the end result, the “...

How to *not* sound salesy when marketing your business on social media?
Solopreneurs sometimes wish that they didn’t have to do marketing, and people would just discover them and inquire about their services.
For a lucky few, that non-strategy might work.
For the rest of us? We have to learn how to do good marketing…Yet, maybe you’ve tried posting about your services on social media, and got discouraged about receiving little engagement. Maybe you get far fewer likes and comments about your business, compared to your other social media posts, such as when you post ...

Authentic Marketing Principles for Getting More Clients
How they go from "I don't know who you are" ... to… "I’d love to be your client!"
To get more clients, you essentially need more of the right people to discover you, then having enough trust to buy what you sell.
For us solopreneurs, we don’t need complex funnels. Instead, we need to apply some principles…Being Discovered
Three key ways I often teach about how to be discovered by prospective clients:
Authentic content – instead of seeing content creation as a chore, look at it as a discipline of “p...

The Authentic Business Quadrants: Pathways to Meaningful Income
You’re passionate about providing what you believe to be a much needed service. You put it out there… yet you’re surprised that not enough people buy.
With such a great idea, why isn’t your business working… yet?
Over the years I’ve met many inspired, visionary, heart-based people who are missing a core understanding about marketing. A hard truth that’s important to reflect on:
It’s difficult to sell something unless people already want it.
In other words, to make money, you’ll need to sell what t...

How to Feel Confident in Selling Your Services
When are you not confident in selling your services?
It’s when you don't believe the transaction is truly a win-win.
If you really believe in your services, and know that the person you're talking to would find it to be a great deal at the price you're offering, then you're no longer afraid to sell. It becomes a worthwhile cause to let them know.Think about it: When you're excited by a service you've used and loved, it's so easy to tell a friend if you think they would love it. You take pride in ...

True Dedication to Service Brings Longevity of Business
It’s sad to see many of the peers I started with in business a decade ago are no longer updating their public presences (social media and website).
Back then, we all talked a big game about being mission-driven, out to change the world or at least, our industry. Most of them are no longer around. Most of them are still alive, but not in terms of the relationship to their audience... Some of them probably made enough money for an early modest retirement.
Others might have gone back to work for a...

Why I don't post about social or political issues...
Just as yours, my heart goes out to the innocent and suffering people of Ukraine and Russia at this time... and to the other wars around the globe that are underreported.
And yet, you might have noticed that I rarely post anything about it, nor about the many important societal or political issues in the past few years.
I wish to be an example of someone who does not post social/political stuff – for all of you out there who might sometimes feel guilty about not posting about such things. It’s so ...

What if your ideas go viral and you don’t get credit for it?
As you become more effective and successful with your work, one of the risks is that others might copy you. This is most frequently done in online content: one of your pieces goes viral and then others reuse it, but don’t give you credit.
Should you be concerned that it might happen? Do you need to constantly monitor and hunt down the copycats? Some people do. For me, it would be too much stress.
Instead, I recommend preventive measures. The more places you publish the idea, the easier it will be ...
