Writer Vs. Writer: Aaron Lebold

In this post, we will get to know Aaron Lebold. An amazing author of psychological horror, sometimes dabbling in extreme elements. His love of the genre began at an early age with all the best slasher films. Writing has always been something of interest but he didn’t make any serious attempts at it until 2017. Since that time he has completed several novels and novellas. His short stories can be found in various anthologies by various publishers. Some of his short stories have been narrated for the Cryo-Pod Podcast. His novel “Born Sick” took second place at the Godless 666 awards for best novel of 2022. He will be releasing more work with Gloom House Publishing and D&T Publishing in the later part of 2023. Ready to know more?

Thanks Aaron for joining us today. I'd like to begin with your love for the horror genre began at an early age with slasher films. How did these films influence your interest in writing, and what drew you specifically to psychological horror and exploring extreme elements within the genre?

I always loved writing but didn’t really consider it as an interest until later in life. I think these films ended up influencing me in a lot of ways. The slasher element brings a bit of shock value and films like Nightmare on Elm Street added a sense of humor to the whole thing. The biggest element of these films for me is that they created a likeminded community. When I first started writing I wasn’t really doing horror but I struggled to find my place. The one thing I knew for sure was that horror people were the people I fit in with.

You said that you've started your serious writing journeying 2017 and you have completed several novels and novellas. Could you share some insights into your creative process? How do you approach developing your ideas and crafting your stories, especially considering the dark and thought-provoking elements you strive to incorporate?

Typically I just have a random idea come to me and I build off that. I like to spend a lot of time alone and often I think about story ideas. Once I get enough of an idea that I start to get excited about it I put it on the list of books I want to write. I like to add thought-provoking elements because there are a lot of writers out there trying to do the same thing. I don’t want to write purely for entertainment, I would like my work to have a more meaningful impact on the reader.

Interesting. That's what Transgressive Writing is all about. May I know about your short stories that have been featured in various anthologies and narrated for the Cryo-Pod Podcast? How does the shorter format of short stories differ from longer narratives in terms of storytelling and impact? Do you find yourself experimenting with different themes or techniques when writing short stories?

Yes. I often like to have a theme presented to me and challenge myself to come up with something for it. A lot of anthologies look for specific topics and I enjoy the challenge. Short stories typically only take me a day to write once I settle on a concept. It’s basically the same idea as writing a novel but done in a way that doesn’t elaborate into a more complex story. They are a lot of fun to write and I find that they help get your name out there to readers.

By the way, I would like to congratulate you on "Born Sick" for taking second place at the Godless 666 awards for best novel of 2022! Can you provide us with a glimpse into the world and themes of this acclaimed novel? What motivated you to explore the subject matter within its pages?

Thank you. With this novel I wanted to try and play around with timeline. It goes back and forth between two periods that eventually intersect. For me, writing is about trying new things and finding out what works for you. As far as the plot, when I decided I was going to focus more on horror I wanted to go all in. It basically started with the idea that something that scares people is the idea that people they trust are not what they seem. Doctors fall in to that category so I just pushed the idea as far as I could.

It's exciting to hear that you will be releasing more work with Gloom House Publishing and D&T Publishing in 2023. Can you give us any hints or details about these upcoming projects? Are there any particular themes or ideas you're eager to explore in these works?

With Gloom House we are still discussing which book to release, so I’m not sure yet. The one that is coming out with D&T was another one that I wrote to try something new. I was never very interested in ghost stories but when I heard about a place in California called Pacheco Pass I felt compelled to make something for the setting. I like my books to be grounded in reality but also wanted to incorporate a supernatural element to this one. It was fun to write.

You mentioned being a youth worker and an addictions counselor, dedicating your life to helping others overcome the path of drugs and alcohol. How has your professional background and experiences influenced your writing? Do you find yourself drawing inspiration from your work with young people and the challenges they face?

The first book I ever wrote wasn’t horror. It still hasn’t been published but it was all about addiction. I was definitely inspired by my work for that one. Sometimes I’ll use people’s names for characters but I’ve never used any of their actual stories. I would say it has had an influence though. In my line of work a lot of empathy is required. You need to be able to see things from someone else’s point of view and really understand it if you’re going to be able to help them. You need to do this if you agree with them or not. I use this skill to create characters.

In addition to your writing, you also have a background in music, composing lyrics for songs that aim to inspire and evoke emotions. How does your experience in music intersect with your writing? Do you find any similarities or crossovers between the two creative outlets?

The music thing really made me see where I actually belong. I tried to make music for a lot of years but I was never any good at it. I couldn’t sing and during the whole process I never had any interest in learning anything about notes, timing, anything really. Once I started writing I was very much interested in learning about things like formatting, publishing, grammar, sentence structure, etc. The only thing about the music I made that I’m not embarrassed by are the lyrics. Hindsight makes sense. I never wanted to be a musician, I wanted to express myself. I received messages through music as I grew up so I gravitated towards the same thing to send my message. Since I’ve started writing I’ve found a way to do the same thing that I’m actually good at and interested in.

Your journey about returning to school to become an addictions counselor and dedicating yourself to a life of sobriety shows great personal growth and determination is inspiring. How has this journey impacted your writing style and the themes you explore in your stories? Do you find yourself drawing from your own experiences or using storytelling as a means of processing and reflecting on your past?

Absolutely. This is where I try to be thought-provoking. Recovery isn’t just about getting off drugs, it’s a new way to think and a new way to live. I try to incorporate that into my work. I also have a lot of drug use in my work, which I am familiar with from my time as an addict.

As a writer of dark and thought-provoking stories, how do you balance the desire to engage readers with challenging content while also ensuring that the narratives provide valuable insights or messages? Are there any particular themes or topics that you feel strongly about exploring through your work?

I’m still figuring out my balance with this. I basically use extremes. For example; the concept of anger and the damage it can do are the same if you yell at someone or cut their head off. Decapitation is a louder statement than raising your voice but it all comes from the same place. I try to look at everyday emotions and amplify them in a way that they are hard to ignore.

Finally, as you continue to pursue your passion for writing and challenge yourself creatively, what are your aspirations for the future? Are there any specific goals or projects you hope to accomplish in the coming years?

My hope is to just keep getting my work out there, and keep getting better. I want every book I wrote to feel to me like it’s the best I’ve ever written. The indie horror community is amazing and I’ve had a lot of support from other writers. I only started writing novellas this year and that was because they seem to be popular among readers. I want to keep pushing myself and I guess I’ll just see where that takes me.

I don't use TikTok neither I'm by any means interesting in diving deep in yet another social media rabbit hole but boy! am I interested on their impacts on society and the future? If you're using any social media, for sure you've came across this new trend on TikTok where people act like NPCs. An NPC, or non-playable character, is a term commonly used in video games to refer to characters that are controlled by the game's artificial intelligence rather than the player. These characters serve various roles, such as advancing the game's plot, providing information, or adding depth and context to the game world. So, you may have guessed what's this trend. If not let me explain to you.

The NPC trend on TikTok involves users imitating non-playable characters from video games by livestreaming and uttering nonsensical and repetitive phrases in response to gifts sent by viewers. This trend was popularized by Montreal-based content creator PinkyDoll (@pinkydollreal). Despite its bizarre nature, the trend has been growing on TikTok, with viewers flocking to NPC livestreams to send gifts, and content creators can earn money from the stickers they receive during their livestreams. PinkyDoll, for example, revealed that she earns at least $7,000 when streaming for an average of six hours per day, significantly more than what she used to make on TikTok before. Many content creators have joined the trend, mimicking PinkyDoll and even dressing up as in-game NPCs or famous movie characters to offer a unique experience to their audience. Now the question is, what such trends do to your brain, social skills and the future of our society.

In 2017, ByteDance launched TikTok for international markets, and it quickly gained popularity, especially among younger users. By 2018, TikTok had become one of the most downloaded apps globally. The platform's unique algorithm, which showcased content tailored to each user's interests, played a significant role in its success. However, it has also faced challenges related to data privacy concerns and scrutiny from governments over content moderation. Despite these challenges, TikTok has remained a dominant force in the social media landscape, captivating users with its engaging and entertaining short videos.

Trends on TikTok can spread rapidly, with users from all around the world participating in challenges, dances, memes, and other viral content. Some of the most popular trends on TikTok include dance challenges, lip-syncing to audio clips, cooking videos, life hacks, and various comedic sketches. The platform was particularly popular among younger audiences and had a significant influence on internet culture. TikTok's short videos are typically between 15 to 60 seconds in length, making them quick and easy to consume. Users can create and upload their own videos or view content shared by other users. The app is designed to be highly engaging and user-friendly, with several key features: For You Page (FYP), Video Creation, Music and Sound, Hashtags and Challenges, Interaction, Discover Page, and Live Streaming.

TikTok employs sophisticated psychology () and user behavior targeting (source) strategies to optimize user engagement and retention. By leveraging algorithms that analyze user interactions, content preferences, and viewing habits, TikTok's "For You Page" is tailored to each individual, presenting them with highly relevant and engaging content. The platform's addictive design, short video format, and autoplay feature keep users scrolling and watching for extended periods (source). Moreover, TikTok encourages social validation (source) through likes, comments, and shares, tapping into users' desire for recognition and acceptance within the community. This combination of personalized content, addictive design, and social validation drives user behavior, fostering increased time spent on the app and ultimately contributing to its immense popularity and user loyalty.

As mentioned earlier, the "NPC streaming" trend on TikTok is about creators imitate non-playable characters from video games by performing nonsensical actions and dialogue for entertainment. The trend involves a transactional approach to engagement, where viewers purchase virtual gifts for streamers, driving their reactions and gestures in response. The article also delves into the parallels between livestreaming and webcam work, highlighting the connection between NPC streaming and the marketplaces of intimacy seen in gamer culture and online sex work. It emphasizes the economic ties between online fame and adult content, and the challenges faced by creators in navigating societal perceptions and hostilities towards intimacy-related content.

This trend is a sub-trend to an umbrella category called "e-girl". E-girl is a term used to describe a specific internet subculture, particularly popular on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and gaming communities. The term "e-girl" is a combination of "electronic" or "internet" and "girl." E-girls are typically young women who adopt a specific aesthetic and style characterized by colorful hair, heavy makeup (often featuring winged eyeliner and blush under the eyes), alternative fashion choices, such as oversized clothes, chokers, and platform shoes, and sometimes accessories like facial piercings. The e-girl aesthetic often incorporates elements of anime or video game culture, with references to popular characters and styles. In addition to their unique appearance, e-girls are known for their active presence on social media, where they share content like selfies, dance videos, and creative short-form videos. The focus is on exploring how mind control has been used and why, as well as its potential implications on society and individuals. It touches upon the historical origins of NWO plans and their support from various groups and organizations, including Freemasonry, Illuminati, and others. As the article "NPC in real life" explains the trends on TikTok can be even worse including users creating videos that involve harassing, embarrassing, or frightening people in public. Such trends on TikTok including the current NPC trend reflects a cultural myopia in general. Cultural myopia (source) refers to a narrow or limited perspective and understanding of other cultures, often leading to a lack of awareness, empathy, or appreciation for cultural differences. It is a form of ethnocentrism, where individuals or groups believe that their own cultural norms, values, and beliefs are superior to those of other cultures.

You may ask, how a simple stupid trend such as NPC TikTok Trend can be harmful? Well, think about it this way. The majority of users of this platform are young, possibly even generation Alpha (the demographic cohort succeeding Generation Z). According to Statista, as of April 2023, it was found that 21 percent of TikTok's global audience were women between the ages of 18 and 24 years, while male users of the same age made up approximately 17.5 percent of the platform's audience. Based on SproutSocial statistic, in fact, 25 percent of TikTok users are age 10 to 19, capturing a segment of Gen Alpha. Now, to answer your question imagine this portion of users, special gen alpha, viewing others as NPCs. How it works is that the creators of these videos let the viewers dehumanizing them, treating them as insignificant and thoughtless entities, similar to characters in a video game that lack true agency or emotions. This dehumanization allows the viewers to justify their actions, as they perceive their targets as unimportant and inconsequential, just like background characters in a game.

This trend promotes selfish behavior. A behavior that is cultivating by capitalism for decades. This selfish behavior is happening when viewers seeing themselves as the protagonists and the character as mere NPCs, and this encourage the viewers to prioritize their own amusement or desires without considering the feelings or experiences of the people they are watching. It reinforces a self-centered mindset where others' well-being and emotions are of little importance compared to their own entertainment or self-gratification.

So, I tried to show how virtual interactions, such as video games and social media, can influence real-life behavior and perceptions, leading to a lack of empathy and a disregard for the impact of one's actions on others. Meanwhile, I gave you something to think that why there are waves after waves of such trends, or apps after another are being created to dumb down the society more and more by reducing the attention span, emotional response and thought process. I encourage you to recognize the harmful nature of this trend and the importance of fostering empathy and understanding towards others, both online and in real life. In this post I will be interviewing James G. Carlson. James is an award-winning author of horror, science fiction, and dark fantasy. His short stories have appeared in numerous anthologies. He has also released two collections of dark fiction, Seven Exhumations and The Ever-Descending Staircase, as well as three novellas, The Legion Machine, Midnight in the City of the Carrion Kid, and Red Falls (included in Hacked in Two, with Daemon Manx). Most recently, James worked with Michael R. Collins on Miracles for Masochists, a book featuring one collaborative tale and three short stories from each author. His new horror noir and cosmic fantasy novel, The Eleventh Door, is scheduled for a late 2023 release from Gloom House Publishing. From the weird state of Pennsylvania, James drinks too much coffee and writes at a desk surrounded by animals and family in the mad zoo he calls home. Let get to know this fantastic inspiring author more.

Hi James. First thing first, congratulations on your award-winning career as an author of horror, science fiction, and dark fantasy! What initially drew you to these genres, and how do you navigate the unique challenges and rewards of writing within them?

Thank you! My love for horror began at thirteen or fourteen when I watched A Nightmare on Elm Street at a friend’s house. The concept alone blew me away -- a dead murderer invading people’s dreams, where he could kill them in creative ways. After that, I often sneaked downstairs when everyone had gone to bed to watch horror movies on HBO, Cinemax, and USA’s Up All Night. I grew up during a great time in cinema, with gems like Goonies, Gremlins, Back to the Future, Alien, Robocop, Beetlejuice, etc. They gave me an enduring appreciation for storytelling. Trying to inspire me to read more, my mother bought me a book around that time, a horror anthology. I devoured every story and found myself hungry for more. That began a life-long love of reading, not just horror but several genres. I discovered authors like Salinger, Fitzgerald, Miller, Kerouac, Bukowski, and the like, becoming even more obsessed with literary fiction. I was ravenous for it. I even read the complete works of Shakespeare and The Bible. Then, during a strange period of travel and excessive substance use, I penned my first novel, The Book of February. A story of two down-and-out heroin addicts struggling on the streets of Philadelphia. I didn’t try my hand at horror until 2017. But a publisher soon took a chance on my work. Readers responded favorably. And I haven’t stopped since.

Though each story presents its own unique challenges, I love what I do and thoroughly give myself to the writing endeavor. None of my books are strictly horror; there are always noticeable crossover components. My main goals are simple: write well and offer entertaining content to readers. I think I’ve been mostly successful in meeting those goals. The main challenge, I’d say, is finding ways to get people’s eyes on my work. The book market is saturated, and content gets buried very quickly. So there’s a very narrow window to make a mark with a book.

A Nightmare on Elm Street was a life changing horror back then specially for our generation. Tell us about your upcoming novel, “The Eleventh Door,” combines horror noir and cosmic fantasy. Can you provide us with a glimpse into the world and themes of this highly anticipated release? What inspired you to merge these two genres together?

The Eleventh Door follows disgraced ex-detective Madeline Sharpe as she scrapes by as a private investigator in Spiral City. A former colleague asks her to consult on a perplexing homicide case, and she reluctantly takes the job. Little does she know, this will lead her down a strange path that extends far beyond the reality she thought she knew. After witnessing two brutal murders, she finds herself transported somewhere beyond our world – the Eleventh Realm – where she encounters savage gods, angels of the wood, and various unusual creatures. Can she make it back to Earth in time to save it, or will she be trapped while the fabric of the universe comes undone and plunges everything into oblivion?

I didn’t start this novel with the idea of merging these two subgenres. Initially, I wanted to write a horror noir. The cosmic fantasy came later. You see, I’m a total pantser. The story goes where it wants as my mind races and my fingers navigate the keys. So, it’s often surprising to me when my stories take a significant turn. And I just go with it. I find that sort of writing very satisfying. Of course, I have a vague idea of what I want each story to entail, and I get glimpses of its direction beforehand. But it’s mostly a spontaneous process.

You have released several collections of short stories and novellas, including “Seven Exhumations,” “The Ever-Descending Staircase,” and “Red Falls.” How do you approach crafting shorter works compared to longer narratives, and do you have a particular affinity for exploring the shorter form?

I adore short-form horror. The challenge of telling a captivating story with limited words is thrilling. In truth, I think I’m better at writing short stories than novels, though I expect that’s because I write more short fiction than long. The story “It’s Always Night Underground” from Seven Exhumations won an award two years ago. My novella Midnight in the City of the Carrion Kid was nominated for a Splatterpunk Award and won a 666 Award. Readers regularly say they wished that book was longer, though. The Ever-Descending Staircase is comprised of my earliest attempts at horror. All the stories in that book previously appeared in anthologies, and when the rights reverted to me, I released them in a collection.

I love writing short horror as well but they're challenging and it's hard write something publish worthy. But in “Miracles for Masochists” you worked on a collaborative project with Michael R. Collins. Can you tell us about the experience of co-authoring a book and the creative synergy that emerged between the two of you? How does collaborative writing differ from writing solo?

Michael and I met roughly four years ago. He and I wrote for the same publisher at the time, but that publisher wasn’t the most ethical, so we demanded our work back and went about trying to sell our work elsewhere. That’s when I got the idea to start Gloom House Publishing. And Michael’s novella Verum Malum became our first release. We discussed a collaborative release for some time, eventually making it happen. We wrote the opening story together, “The Sequined Specter.” It’s a paranormal horror comedy involving the ghost of Elvis Presley haunting a nice couple. They bring in a medium to sort out the problem but end up with a second entity in their home, a decidedly malevolent one. The couple and Elvis, joined by a paranormal investigator and a child medium, take steps to banish the evil from the house. Michael and I are similar in many ways, and our writing styles aren’t that dissimilar, so we ended up being remarkably compatible. I enjoy collaborating. It takes the story in a direction it wouldn’t have gone were it not for the other mind involved.

I also have a split release with Daemon Manx, Hacked in Two, for which we each wrote a dark novella. His story, a psychologically twisted tale of metafiction and apocalyptic carnage, is titled “Deacon.” And mine, “Red Falls,” combines folk horror, creature feature, and social and political satire. In 2024, I have planned collaborations involving Chase Will, Mark Zirbel, Mark Miller, R.J. Benetti, and a few others. I’m very excited about those.

I do work on collaborative projects, however I find them challenging if you're not living in the same time zone. In this regard I worked with international writers to create a poetry collection and a short story collection focusing on specific themes such as diversity, inclusion, gender issues. I see that as an editor for the anthology “We’re Here: An Anthology of LGBTQ+ Horror,” you also had the opportunity to work with talented authors such as Hailey Piper, Judith Sonnet, and Sumiko Saulson. How did you approach the editing process for this project, and what were some of the highlights or challenges you encountered?

I suppose I approach every editing job with an open mind. I know each story will need a different approach and level of attention from me. The first thing I do is differentiate style from perceived errors. Sometimes those things are deliberate, and I don’t want to interfere with a writer’s voice. Mainly, I focus on grammar, punctuation, tenses, telling vs. showing, passive voice, redundancy, continuity, structure, and flow. I love editing work by authors I haven’t read before. Not only does it expose me to new talents, but it also presents new challenges for my editing brain. In that way, editing can prove quite rewarding. Most recently, I edited work by Edward Lee, Brian Keene, M. Ennenbach, Christine Morgan, Kristopher Triana, Ruthann Jagge, Carver Pike, etc, for a different charity anthology. It was an honor to work with all of them.

Apart from writing, you’re managing Gloom House Publishing. I’ve learned that it is known for its commitment to integrity, compassion, and unity. How do these values translate into the types of books you publish and the authors you choose to work with? What sets Gloom House apart from other indie presses?

Gloom House has old-school punk values and liberal sensibilities, so it’s more of a collective than a business. We’re a team, and each member is concerned with the success of the other members. But, most of all, we share a passion for writing. That’s what unites us more than anything. We release a variety of content, from dark fiction and literary horror to extreme horror and transgressive fiction. In short, we just want to share quality content that entertains readers. And in that goal, I think we’ve done alright.

Could you let our readers know what the requirements for authors are to submit their work to your publishing house?

Because Gloom House is basically a two-person show these days, we don’t have any open calls planned. In fact, our current release calendar takes us out to early 2024. We take the occasional pitch through our website, however. I suspect that our 2024 calendar will be full very soon. As we expand, we hope to do more open calls.

Gloom House Publishing has been involved in charity projects, such as “Nursery Stories for Dumb Crotch Goblins: A Child’s Garden of Curses” and “We’re Here: An Anthology of LGBTQ+ Horror,” which donate proceeds to worthy causes. How important is it for you and Gloom House to give back to the community, and how do you select the charitable projects you support?

It’s very important to Gloom House to be involved in charity projects. I try to do charity work every year, whether contributing one of my short stories to a fundraising anthology or releasing a book for a cause. So, when Angelique Jordonna and Mick Collins approached me about the We’re Here anthology, I said yes immediately. I strongly believe in the Trevor Project’s work and loved that Angelique wanted the funds to go to them. Then, about a week or two later, I had the same reply when Marian Echevarria and Mick Collins approached me about the Crotch Goblins anthology. Mothers of Mayhem and Gloom House teamed up for the project, and we’re preparing for the August 29th release of the title. All proceeds from the anthology go to Donate Life America in honor of the late Jay Wilburn, who is greatly missed in the horror community.

You mentioned that Gloom House Publishing plans to release new titles by Aaron Lebold, Terry Miller, and Ruth Anna Evans. Could you provide any insights into these upcoming works and what readers can expect from these authors?

Aaron Lebold and Terry Miller have been with Gloom House since early 2022. We’ve released two of Lebold’s brutal novels, Genocide and The Sheriff of Salem. And we released Miller’s transgressive creature feature, Den of the Wererats, on our extreme imprint, Bastardized Books. In the coming months, we plan to release one of two planned Lebold offerings and Miller’s latest collection, We All Die Eventually. Ruth Anna Evans is the newest author signed to Gloom House, and we are excited to work on her dark and bloody novella, Do Not Go in That House.

Finally, do you find any particular inspiration in the quirks and idiosyncrasies of your surroundings?

Absolutely. My partner and I have a lot of animals. So it’s not surprising to look down and see our skunk, Cedric, nosing at my feet while I work. My cat Nugget often sits beside my computer, watching me write. The dogs—a basset hound, labradoodle, Great Dane, and English bulldog—nap around my office space throughout the day. And our two pigs, Snotz and Peanut, like to keep me on my toes. Another essential part of my writing and editing process is music. Usually, I play jazz or classical. But sometimes, the project demands a different genre, like electronic music, punk, indie rock, noise rock, ambient soundscapes, or death metal.

Transgressive fiction is a genre of literature that explores taboo subjects and themes such as violence, sexuality, and substance abuse. It challenges societal norms and often features characters who act against established rules and expectations. Writing transgressive fiction can be a daunting task. As a transgressive writer, I often find it challenging to write stories that are transgressive or incorporate transgressive elements. Writing transgressive fiction can be a daunting task, as it requires the writer to confront their deepest fears and expose their vulnerabilities to the world. For instance, publishing my stories in Feminomaniacs was a difficult decision, but I chose to do it anyway. Similarly, working on my autobiography "Virginity for Sale" was an emotional journey that required me to reflect on my experiences as a woman growing up in Iran and I decided to never publish it. Even today, as I work on my current duology, I find it challenging to write about non-standard explicit sex scenes and other transgressive elements such as self harm or suicidal thoughts.

However, I believe that pushing the boundaries is essential to creating art that is truly meaningful and thought-provoking. That is why I choose to share my work with others and encourage them to do the same. For example, I am currently collaborating on an anthology called "Sokut," which explores a range of taboo subjects through creative essays. This has been the most challenging project I have undertaken so far, but I believe it will be a powerful and thought-provoking collection. As a transgressive writer, I know that I will face many challenges, but I also know that these challenges are necessary for creating work that truly resonates with readers. As a mentor and workshop facilitator, I encourage others to push their boundaries in their own writing. I believe that through this process, writers can develop their voice and create truly meaningful and thought-provoking work. 1. Be authentic

Transgressive fiction often deals with dark and uncomfortable topics. It's important to write from an authentic place and not to shy away from the raw and gritty realities of life. Write what you know or research what you don't know thoroughly and don't be afraid to draw from your own experiences and emotions. Remember, Transgressive Fiction needs pure emotions. Because of that, there's no one-size-fits-all recipe for it. Focus on your emotions, research well and dare to share.

2. Push boundaries

Transgressive fiction is all about breaking rules and pushing boundaries. Don't be afraid to challenge societal norms and conventions in your writing. Think outside the box and explore topics that are taboo or controversial. Take risks and be bold in your writing. That said, topics that today may be taboo might not be taboo in the past or future. But remember, there's a code of ethics and morals to live a proper life and never harm another being by any means. So, that can be used to write. Consider Philip K. Dick. He never writes about what is directly count as taboo but the way he plays with ethical paradoxes is what makes his work transgressive.

3. Create complex characters

Transgressive fiction often features characters who are flawed, damaged, and morally ambiguous. Think what characters you can create that are multi-dimensional and complex yet they're by no means the heroes of the society and sometimes they're even the doomed ones. Give your characters a backstory and motivations that are realistic and believable for what they do. Not every protagonist in every book needs to be a hero for all, they just need to be the hero in their own story. That said, seriously avoid creating one-dimensional caricatures or stereotypes. For example think about what makes Hannibal interesting? Is he the good guy or the hero? Sure not but is he interesting? He does. What makes a cannibal such attractive? Is it the fact that they eat human meat or is it their thought process, the way they romanticize it, the way they justify it for themselves? The same goes for protagonists of books such as Lolita, American Psycho, Fight Club, etc.

4. Use vivid imagery

Transgressive fiction often relies on vivid and visceral imagery to convey its themes and messages. However in this period, everyone is worshipping censorship and surely this seems to put an end on transgressive fiction (it never will) but don't be afraid to be explicit in whatever you write. Use descriptive language to create a vivid and immersive experience for the reader. However, the goal of being such descriptive is to use sensory details to bring your scenes to life and make them feel real and create a sense of reality and connection to the reader. We don't do that for a mere shock purpose. Nothing should be aimless in writing. Your goal as a writer is to inspire, not shock.

5. Don't shy away from uncomfortable topics

Transgressive fiction often deals with uncomfortable and taboo topics such as violence, sex, and drug abuse. Don't shy away from these topics, but rather embrace them and explore them in a thoughtful and nuanced way. Use these topics to illuminate deeper truths about the human experience, behavior and thought process.

6. Experiment with structure and form

Transgressive fiction often plays with structure and form in interesting and unconventional ways and for this reason some times is overlapping with Postmodern Literature Characteristics. Don't be afraid to experiment with different narrative techniques and styles. Use fragmentation, nonlinear storytelling, and other techniques to create a unique and compelling reading experience. Be as surreal as you want. You're transgressing the norms and rules so as the creator and the writer you can be the transgressor and not just your protagonist.

7. Be aware of the potential consequences

Transgressive fiction can be a powerful tool for social commentary and exploring the human condition. However, it's important to be aware of the potential consequences of writing about controversial topics. Be prepared to face criticism, backlash, and even censorship. Make sure that your writing is thoughtful and responsible, and be willing to defend your work if necessary. Also, make sure you know what power you behold. You're writing to raise awareness on a certain topic not glorifying what common sense would reject. For example if you're writing from a perspective or about a rapist, pedophile, serial killer and so on, what message are you conveying. That what they're doing is cool and transgressive or what they do has consequences and should not be romanticize. Transgressive fiction no matter how extreme it can get, has its own values of 'raising awareness' about such issues from an interesting perspective.

So, to conclude I can say that writing transgressive fiction can be a challenging but rewarding experience. By being authentic, pushing boundaries, creating complex characters, using vivid imagery, exploring uncomfortable topics, experimenting with structure and form, and being aware of the potential consequences, you can create a work of art that challenges societal norms and provokes thought and discussion. The novel exposes how consumerism commodifies masculinity, treating it as a consumable and performative product.

Similarly, "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby explores the protagonist's obsession with music and the commodification of relationships. You can't deny that these effects of wealth inequality create a vicious cycle, as limited social mobility and unequal opportunities reinforce and perpetuate existing economic disparities. Addressing wealth inequality requires policies and initiatives that promote equal access to education, job opportunities, healthcare, and a fairer distribution of wealth and resources. By creating a more equitable society, we can foster social mobility and provide individuals with greater opportunities to improve their lives and contribute to the overall progress of society. The absurdity of it all is that when the poor say "if it wasn't for the rich, we didn't have all these innovations and choices." They refer to increasing number of movies and options in purchasing indicating that. My question is, who are these two factors benefiting?

The myth of poverty as a necessity refers to the idea that poverty is often portrayed as a necessary condition for societal and economic progress. However, the consequences of this myth are significant, both on an individual and societal level.

Rhetoric of "Economic Striving": The rhetoric of "economic striving" suggests that individuals must endure poverty and hardship in order to achieve success. This narrative promotes the idea that poverty is a necessary stepping stone towards prosperity, creating a mindset that justifies the existence of poverty as an unavoidable part of the path to success. Such rhetoric can discourage efforts to address poverty and inequality, as it implies that those who are impoverished simply need to work harder, rather than recognizing systemic barriers and structural inequalities. Glorification of the "Self-Made" Success Story: Society often glorifies the stories of individuals who have risen from poverty to wealth, portraying them as self-made successes. While these stories can be inspirational, they can also reinforce the notion that poverty is a necessary part of the journey to success. This glorification can overshadow the systemic factors that contribute to poverty, such as limited access to resources, education, and opportunities. It can also create a false belief that anyone can escape poverty through sheer determination, ignoring the structural disadvantages faced by marginalized communities. Psychological Impact of Poverty: Poverty takes a toll not only on individuals' material well-being but also on their psychological and emotional well-being. The experience of poverty often leads to stress, anxiety, and a constant struggle to meet basic needs. The myth of poverty as a necessity adds an additional psychological burden by suggesting that poverty is an inherent and unavoidable aspect of life. This can perpetuate a cycle of hopelessness and despair, making it harder for individuals to break free from poverty and improve their circumstances. Perpetuation of Poverty: The belief that poverty is a necessity can lead to a lack of investment in poverty alleviation measures and social safety nets. It can shape public policies that prioritize economic growth without addressing income inequality and systemic barriers. By perpetuating the myth, society risks accepting poverty as an inevitable part of the social and economic fabric, rather than actively working towards its eradication.

Now, in my idea, challenging the myth of poverty as a necessity requires a shift in societal mindset and a comprehensive approach to poverty alleviation. It involves recognizing that poverty is not a necessary condition for progress and acknowledging the structural factors that contribute to its persistence. Efforts should be directed towards creating equitable opportunities, providing social support systems, and addressing systemic inequalities to break the cycle of poverty and create a more just and inclusive society. What's the solution you may ask? I will answer that in the last section.

4. Brainwashing the Masses

In modern capitalist societies, the masses are often subjected to various forms of brainwashing that perpetuate certain ideologies and reinforce the status quo. Here are the key aspects to consider:

The Power of Advertising: Advertising plays a significant role in shaping public perception and consumer behavior. Through clever marketing techniques, advertisers create desires and manipulate individuals into believing that their happiness and fulfillment lie in material possessions. This constant bombardment of consumerist messages influences people's values, aspirations, and purchasing habits, fostering a culture of excessive consumption. Media Manipulation: Mass media plays a crucial role in disseminating information and shaping public opinion. However, media outlets can be influenced by corporate interests and wealthier individuals who control the narrative. This can result in the portrayal of poverty as a personal failure rather than a systemic issue. By focusing on individual stories of success or highlighting extreme cases of poverty, the media can reinforce the notion that poverty is solely the result of personal choices or shortcomings, thereby shifting blame away from broader social and economic factors. Normalization of Income Disparity: In capitalist societies, income inequality has become increasingly normalized and accepted by the masses. This normalization is fueled by a variety of factors, including the glorification of wealth and the perception that success is attainable for anyone willing to work hard enough. The influence of the wealthy elite extends to shaping public discourse, policies, and legislation, often favoring their interests and perpetuating income disparity.

Solving these issues, in my perspective, requires a critical understanding and active resistance against the mechanisms of manipulation and brainwashing.

5. Alternatives and Solutions

In order to challenge the existing system that perpetuates wealth inequality and brainwashing, it is crucial to explore alternative economic models that prioritize equality and well-being. Anarcho-communism, for instance, advocates for a society without hierarchical structures where resources are shared collectively, ensuring that everyone's needs are met. Embracing such alternative models requires grassroots movements and political engagement. By organizing and mobilizing communities, individuals can collectively advocate for systemic changes, such as wealth redistribution, campaign finance reform, and the regulation of media and advertising. Therefore, simply put we need a Utopia! But why they tell you it will never work? Why they tell you human by nature can't tolerate living in a utopian society in which they can be and do whatever they want without harming themselves, others living beings and the environment? Well, there's an answer to this.

Why they tell you Utopia doesn't exist?

Here's my answer. The notion that utopia doesn't exist is often propagated by those who benefit from maintaining the status quo and preserving existing power structures. Capitalist societies, for example, tend to emphasize the idea that striving for personal success and accumulating wealth is the key to happiness and fulfillment. By dismissing utopia as unattainable, they discourage people from questioning the inherent flaws and injustices within the current system. Furthermore, the argument that utopia doesn't exist can be used as a tool to suppress dissent and maintain control over the masses. It discourages individuals from imagining alternative possibilities and accepting the limitations of the existing social and economic order. This narrative is often reinforced through media, education systems, and cultural norms that emphasize the need to accept the current reality as the only feasible option.

However, it is important to recognize that the concept of utopia is not meant to represent a flawless or perfect society. Instead, it serves as an aspiration for a better, more just, and equitable world. By dismissing utopia, we risk perpetuating the status quo and inhibiting the progress necessary to address pressing social and economic issues. It is through questioning, envisioning alternatives, and striving for positive change that societies can move closer to achieving a more utopian-like state, even if it may never be fully realized.

The Utopia We Need

From an anarcho-communist perspective, challenging the myth of poverty as a necessity involves advocating for a radical transformation of society and the dismantling of capitalist structures that perpetuate inequality. Here's a solution that aligns with an anarcho-communist ideology:

1. Abolishing Private Ownership: No! It doesn't mean that you have to give up your house, your wife and children to anybody. That's what they told you to manipulate you again! The Anarcho-communism calls for the abolition of private ownership of the means of production. This means that resources and industries would be collectively owned and managed by the community as a whole, ensuring equitable distribution and access to wealth and resources. You see! This is what big corporation and minority of rich in control won't benefit from so they manipulate the whole concept and twist the truth the way to control you: The Mass!

2. Economic Equality: Capitalism, as an economic system, is primarily driven by the pursuit of profit and individual self-interest. It operates based on the principles of private ownership, free markets, and competition. It's all about Wealth accumulation, Competition and meritocracy, Profit-driven motive and Power imbalances. Does it concern you as the majority poor? Nope! Anarcho-communism seeks to eliminate this wealth disparities by prioritizing economic equality. This can be achieved by implementing systems such as communal ownership, where resources and goods are shared based on need, rather than through market mechanisms that perpetuate wealth accumulation and income inequality.

Solidarity is the unity, support, and mutual aid among individuals or groups who share common goals, interests, or struggles. It involves standing together in times of need, advocating for collective rights, and working towards common objectives. Community building refers to the process of fostering connections, cooperation, and shared responsibility within a group or community. It involves promoting inclusivity, collaboration, and the development of social networks to create a sense of belonging and work towards collective well-being.

This promote cooperation, mutual support, and a sense of shared responsibility. These values can challenge the capitalist framework by prioritizing the common good over individual gain. By fostering a strong sense of community and promoting collective action, solidarity can empower marginalized groups and work towards a more equitable society. However, capitalism tends to undermine solidarity and community building by emphasizing individual success, wealth accumulation, and the pursuit of self-interest, which can hinder efforts to build cohesive and inclusive communities. Capitalism's focus on competition, profit maximization, and individualism can create divisions and reinforce inequalities within society. It often encourages a mindset that prioritizes personal gain at the expense of others, leading to a weakening of community bonds and social cohesion. Additionally, capitalism's reliance on market mechanisms and profit-driven decision-making can undermine collective efforts to address social issues and create sustainable, community-oriented solutions.

Anarcho-communism emphasizes the importance of solidarity and community building. By fostering strong social bonds and supporting marginalized groups, communities can collectively resist exploitation, challenge oppressive systems, and create spaces of inclusivity and support.

My Final Thoughts

Capitalism's stronghold on society is undeniably powerful, but it is essential to question its flaws and confront the system's role in perpetuating corporatism, glorifying the wealthy, and maintaining the illusion that poverty is a necessary sacrifice for societal advancement. In my idea, an anarcho-communism society is a solution to social and economic inequality under capitalism. This is because of its core principles and beliefs. It advocates for the abolition of both the state and private ownership of the means of production, aiming for a society based on common ownership and the absence of hierarchies.

In this regard, anarcho-communism seeks to address the root causes of inequality. It promotes the equitable distribution of resources, goods, and services, ensuring that everyone's needs are met. Without the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few, anarcho-communism strives for a society where social and economic disparities are minimized. The anarcho-communism emphasizes direct democracy, community cooperation, and voluntary association. It encourages active participation and decision-making at the local level, allowing individuals to have a direct say in shaping their own lives and communities. This focus on self-governance and shared responsibility aims to create a more egalitarian and inclusive society where people have equal opportunities and collective well-being is prioritized.

However, it's important to note that creating such society with a capitalist perspective of how a society functions and what are the needs of a society to survive, will result in yet another imbalance society, As Marx well said "History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce."

This shows that attempting to create a society without addressing the fundamental flaws of capitalism can lead to the replication of oppressive structures in a different form. Anarcho-communism seeks to address the root causes of inequality by challenging the capitalist framework altogether, rather than simply reforming it. So, anarcho-communist society would require a fundamental shift in societal values, norms, and consciousness. It would involve dismantling existing power structures and fostering a culture of cooperation, solidarity, and mutual aid. Additionally, addressing the potential pitfalls of authoritarianism, lack of productivity incentives, and decision-making processes would be essential to ensure that anarcho-communism does not replicate the flaws it seeks to overcome.

Writer vs. Writer: Mark Safranko

In this post we will have an interview with talented Mark Safranko. Mark is an author who has published novels, novellas, story collections, and plays in the US, UK, and France. Some of his notable works include "Hating Olivia," "No Strings," and "God Bless America." His books have been published by various publishers such as Harper Perennial, Murder Slim Press, and Honest Publishing. In addition to his novels, Safranko has also written numerous short stories, which have appeared in various literary magazines and anthologies. His plays, including "The Bitch-Goddess" and "Interrogation #2," have been performed in theaters in New York and New Jersey. Let's go and get to know Mark more.

Hi Mark, Thanks for joining me for this interview. As I was reading through your bio I found that your work has garnered a cult following mainly in Europe. How does it feel to have such recognition and appreciation for your writing abroad?

Thanks for talking with me, Neda. Well, the fact that you had to read my bio to find out where my following is explains something, doesn’t it? It’s a schizophrenic feeling, for sure. In Europe my work is covered in Rolling Stone, and Le Figaro, and Il Fatto Quottidiano, while in the US…it’s a different story. It’s of course gratifying at the same time, and I’m thankful that I’ve been able to see my work make its way into print so frequently in Europe. I’m now in the very peculiar position of having my work appear first in a language other than my own. That’s the case with several of my recent French titles as well as a new German novel. But knowing that the French have such a long and exalted literary tradition makes me feel that I’ve found myself in the right place. They have a long tradition of providing a home for certain kinds of American writers, from Hemingway to Henry Miller and many others. Some people, in fact, say that the French are always ahead of the curve when it comes to discovering American writers.

I agree, specially authors who transgress norms. That's what French are passionate about. So, you talked about your latest novel, Amerigone. Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the book and what readers can expect from it?

Amerigone was actually inspired by the culture of violence we live with in the US, which as you know is at epidemic level. But I wanted to take it way beyond gun violence. I wanted to probe its origins and manifestations in the human psyche. I wrote the novel at a fever pace, which I believe it maintains. It’s the story of a captor and a captive and their surreal road trip across America, and I wanted it to have the feel and logic of a dream – or a nightmare. In other words, it’s supposed to be devoid of rationality and logic, which life is, of course. And, often, violence.

That makes sense. You were in France in 2018 and you were named the first Author in International Residence at the University of Lorraine in Nancy, France. How did this experience influence your writing?

Living in France was a great experience, but I don’t think it’s influenced my work in any significant way except to say that it’s given me the opportunity to view my native land from the other side of the pond, and even through European eyes. I’ve spent a good deal of time there since my work began appearing in 2005. I’ve toured France north, south, east and west several times. Most of my work is set in the States, but I’ve noticed that some of my European experiences are making their way in. What’s interesting is that so many of the writers I love are not American, or are Americans who spent lots of time in Europe, so again, there’s some sort of affinity.

I understand. For me, living here is impacting my writing, only in sense of environment. However, the bureaucracy here is inspiring for a dystopian story. Your stories have appeared in many magazines and journals, including Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and were cited in Best American Mystery Stories. How do you approach writing in the mystery genre, and what draws you to it?

I actually don’t consider myself a mystery writer, but more of a crime writer, or at least a literary writer in which crime often plays a central role. I think that there’s a criminal, maybe even a deviant, in all of us, and to some extent we all can identify with the behavior while we don’t indulge in it. Guilt, fear, jealousy, greed, lust, anger, hatred – we’ve all harbored these feelings and emotions, and they are the soil of crime. When you think of so many great works of literature – Crime And Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, Les Miserables, Therese Raquin, An American Tragedy, for example – some kind of crime is a central theme. It’s a very human theme and provides a naturally dramatic framework for narratives. I find it’s easy to weave a tale around a crime, or a possible crime.

I know that you are not only a writer but also a painter and musician. How do these different art forms influence each other, and do you find that your experiences in one medium inform your work in another?

While I think of myself as a writer first, I consider the other disciplines as extensions of the same work, even if doesn’t seem so on the surface. They are all part of the same process in the end. They might utilize different abilities, but the source is the same. I’ve been a musician since childhood, so it’s the first artistic discipline I tried. Painting I love because it brings the wheels of the brain to a halt, whereas with the writing process there’s no surcease from the process, which is so cerebral and language-driven.

Let's talk about your novel Hating Olivia has been described as a refreshing exception among books that deal with lust, drugs, sex, and women. What inspired you to write this novel, and how did you approach crafting the story and characters?

That novel was inspired by several crazy years when I was just starting out as a writer. It’s about despair, near madness, a very intense love affair that went horribly sideways, my first attempts to write novels, to send them out to publishers, and so forth. It’s a very autobiographical piece, as are all of the novels in the Max Zajack series. I’d attempted writing Hating Olivia a few times before I got the voice right. I was attempting to shoehorn every minute of these few years – especially what was going on in my own mind -- into the book and found that it didn’t work. When I just let the events speak for themselves, it was much better and wrote itself. At least it became immensely more readable. It was written very much in the vein of several writers I greatly admired: Henry Miller, Louis-Ferdinand Celine, Bukowski. But maybe the most direct influence was not a book, but a French film – Betty Blue, based on Philippe Djian’s novel. I understand that he’s not so happy with the adaptation, but it had a great effect on me because of its resonance with a certain period of my own life. But in a sense, the preparation for Hating Olivia, which was eventually published by Harper Perennial, was a very long apprenticeship that I had served as a writer. I’d already been writing for over twenty years by the time I’d gotten it down. The book now has its fans on both sides of the Atlantic and has even been translated a second time into French and appeared in Italy as well as the United Kingdom.

Actually, I saw that you've been compared to writers such as Henry Miller and Charles Bukowski. Who are your biggest literary influences, and how have they shaped your writing?

My literary influences are incredibly diverse, really, as I suspect they are for most writers. The two writers you mention, as well as writers like Isaac Bashevis Singer for their direct approach, honesty, brutality, energy, and so forth. I’ve often said that I’ve learned everything I know about writing from the hard novels, or romans durs, of the Belgian novelist Georges Simenon -- economy, the crystallized power of his stories, his ability to do so much in such short novels. There’s a lot to be learned from him. Patricia Highsmith, for the penetration and weirdness of her psychology. Paul Bowles for his essential strangeness. Dostoyevsky for the profundity of his themes as well as the depth of his plumbing of the human soul. The Nobel Prize winners Knut Hamsun and Hermann Hesse are other great favorites, as is Raymond Carver. Pascal Garnier is a recent discovery I love. At various times I try to steal from all of them!

Many of your works deal with themes of disillusionment and the struggle to maintain the dream. What draws you to these themes, and how do you approach exploring them in your writing?

I think they’re universal themes that all of us wrestle with every single day. I’ve had an enormous amount of disillusionment and struggle in my own life, as have so many artists, so it’s well-known and well-traveled territory. I actually believe those preoccupations are best approached with humor – black humor, if you will. Like most of the really difficult things in life, laughter is a panacea. What was it Rabelais said? “For all your ills I give you laughter.”

Now, learning more about you, I was wondering what advice would you give to aspiring writers who are just starting out and looking to make a name for themselves in the literary world?

Probably things they won’t want to hear. Try your best to stay in love with the work and not expect too much in terms of success, at least in the eyes of the world. If you’re not completely and utterly in love with activities like revising and rewriting, proofreading and editing, and doing them over and over again on the same piece, it’s likely not for you. In other words, you have to be in love with the the dirty minutiae of the process of writing. Poring over one word versus another, for example. Changing that word back and forth and then back again. The things that are the very opposite of the romantic image of a writer. Then there are the brutal realities of the business end of it, the marketplace, the agents, the publishing houses, etc. The very real possibility that you might have great talent and produce great work and it still won’t matter when it comes to what sells and is commercially successful. Also the very real possibility that you will never make any real money. If you can handle all of that, then it’s a beautiful life. You have to have steel somewhere inside of you.

Finally, what can readers expect from your upcoming work, and what are your plans for the future?

Well, there’s my recently published collection of poems from Anxiety Press. I worked on those poems over a long stretch of time, decades, and I believe that the collection features some of my best work. A novel, One False Step, becomes available May 31 from Soyos Books. That’s a psychological suspense novel previously available only in French. The filmmaker and novelist Philippe Claudel told me he thinks it would make a good movie. Amerigone appears from Pulpmaster.de in Germany in September. It’s a new novel that will mark my first publication in the German language. There are many other books that might get to see the light of day at some point. I’m working on a couple of new albums of music and I’ve produced many new paintings over the past year. There’s a new novel, new stories, new poems. You just keep moving along and hoping that at least some of it finds an audience. That’s always the most realistic goal.

Hi Nick. Glad to have you here. As a young author, what drew you to writing transgressive fiction, and what do you find most appealing about the genre?

I have always gone against the norms and the system. PR agents and literary agents always tell me I’m wrong, and yet I continue to succeed. I make true art from the heart. Sometimes, my heart and mind go to visions untamed and transgressive places. I don’t care who I bother with my work, as I only wish to share my inner visions with the world and continue to influence readers and people alike globally. People tell me I’m wrong all the time. People criticize my work all the time. And yet, I continue to succeed.

How do you approach crafting characters who often operate outside of societal norms in your transgressive fiction?

I don’t look at my characters as characters. I look at them as real people. Real people bleed and laugh and cry. That’s what shows in my work. I operate outside of societal norms, and I never doubt the people in my stories that do the same thing. It makes it as interesting as possible for the reader that just wants a great experience. I give them that great experience.

Can you discuss any specific challenges you faced while writing, and how did you overcome them?

Every challenge I face while I write is me versus me. Every challenge I face is because of me. The nature of writing is solitary and self-empowering. I focus and tackle my writing challenges by “winning the day” and by writing 1,000 words every day.

How do your personal experiences and interests influence your writing?

My personal interests seldom come into play with my novels. Because I create real experiences and real art, the people in my stories do as they please and react like real people. But in terms of experiences, I put my pain inside of my work as well as my triumph. I put the heights of human emotion into my stories, and my readers appreciate that.

Who are some of your favorite transgressive fiction writers, and how have they influenced your own writing?

Vladimir Nabokov is my favorite transgressive writer. With his outstanding work, Lolita, he disrupted and insulted millions of people across the world. One of my favorite ideas of this book is showing the grotesque through beautiful prose. As a prose stylist myself, I look up to this book as the ultimate use of beautiful prose. One of my favorite stories about it is how it was published. It was rejected by every single publishing house until he found a small pornographic press in Paris to publish it, only going on to sell more than 60 million copies worldwide. It goes to show that the grotesque can sell and inspire billions across the world.

What are some common misconceptions about transgressive fiction, and how do you think readers and critics can better understand and appreciate the genre?

People and writers are scared to both read and write transgressive fiction. Writers are scared because they don’t want to step out of line. Writers just want to appeal to agents and readers by staying within close bounds. I say to hell with the bounds. I say to hell with staying in line.

You have six novels and an ebook of poetry under your belt. How has your writing evolved over time, and what have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an author?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced as an author is being independent and having to do all of the marketing and sales on my own. I have no people to give me a budget. I have no big publishing house backing me. I do everything on my own. My writing has only matured and gotten better over time, as I have only held less fear as I continue to write on.

You’re currently cinematizing the audiobook of your debut novel, The Conjurer. What inspired you to create this visual and auditory experience, and how do you think it will enhance readers’ understanding and appreciation of your work?

To me, cinematizing my audiobook of The Conjurer is about accessibility. There are millions of rampant readers across the globe. However, not everybody reads, and not everyone can read. My goal is to make my work as accessible as possible. And so, visualizing and cinematizing my audiobook is the future of consumption of high literature that I am giving way to.

Can you give us a sneak peek into your upcoming projects? What can readers expect from your future writings?

I am constantly working on a lot. Readers and fans can expect a new videobook, a new novel coming soon, as well as the much-anticipated sequel to my critically acclaimed debut novel, The Conjurer.
