Reading Updates
Before everyone heads over to Thanksgiving mode this afternoon, I thought I should totally add my post of the week.
This week I am simply updating my reading progress for the 2018 Reading Challenge.
With 40 days still left in the year, more than enough time to still reach those goals. Start maximizing those minutes so we can still make it to the finish line despite the frenzy of the many holidays that are to come.
Have a great week everyone and if celebrating, Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Halloween & Advent Calendar
Is it Halloween yet? How long? How many days before we go Trick or Treating?
Any parent of a small child who’s in the Halloween celebrating world knows what I’m talking about. Kids want to celebrate, dress up and more importantly actually be given loads and loads of candies by otherwise protesting, admonishing grown ups. (Mostly! I confess I have used treats as a bribe!)
This year- October once again saw the kiddo repeating the same question over and over. When is Halloween? It reminds me every year of the famous dialogue in the Bollywood classic Sholay where the villain asks “Holi kab hai?” (Loose translation: When is the Festival of Colors) The little darling has the same sense of urgency and eagerness as the aforementioned character in that scene as both can’t wait to plunder the town!
Anyway, I decided to go the Advent Calendar way this year. Why should only Christmas have an advent calendar? I’d like to do it for all occasions that my kindergartener anticipates!
It was so much fun too making the calendar and decorating with appropriate magents. And oh, the joy on T’s face as she crossed off each day! (And the devious grin on mine every time I could point her to the calendar as an answer to the burning question of the day!

Arlington Heights Historical Museum
Recently we visited the Historical Museum right in Arlington Heights. Small and quaint, it turned out to be quite a fun place for the kiddo who was delighted with the kid friendly section.
I will confess here that I had never heard of the place, even though it’s the proverbial hop, skip and jump from the library and on my route from the station to the library. (Yes, that is another way how I make time to reach those Goodreads reading goals- Reading before I head home with Hubby and kiddo.) Back to how I eventually ended up at the Museum- it was thanks to a baby shower hosted on the party venue in the premises. How awesome is that!
The building:
I love seeing these old grandfather clocks! This one was really a masterpiece built as it is like a tower/ castle.
Even though it was a mourning attire, the intricacy and ornate lace is beautiful. Even after all these years.
Yes, that IS a skeleton in the coffin. (Not sure if real) And it was not too scary. Plus, with this month being October , the kids all seemed to assume it was Halloween decoration.

Arts and Crafty
Today’s post is a short list of some of the are and crafts projects Kiddo and I started.
Book Log: courtesy her Kindergarten homework, T has been trying to read a book every night where she’ll follow every word with her wand. (Such a good use of all the princess stuff). So, of course, I got her a notebook to draw a picture for one book each night. She also writes the title following the capital and lower case and one finger space rules. So, it’s such a fabulously to practice writing and creativity. It’s also fun seeing the picture as it reflects on what she found appealing in the story.
We have been using the Kinder app and iPhone Markup feature to make art masterpieces. While I still carry a notepad and a ziplock of crayons, the digital versions are my saviors at stores and queues. Places where flipping out crayons is not an option.
The weekend will see us build a home for Peppa Pig family. The previous DIY dollhouse has become Barbie Dreamhouse. Sigh!
We also made a bunch of birthday cards for friends and family. I am delighted that I no longer have to direct and the kiddo just wants me to be I her line of vision as she busily crafts away.
While these arts and crafts are nowhere close to some of the featured stuff on Pinterest or Google, I always like to share on this blog because this is the ‘opinions of a catty booklovibg couch potato’ blog! Also, these arts are a fun, I sneak in a bit of education and life’s lessons all the while making memories. More than enough value I think!
Though if there are easy crafts that you think a Kindergartner would enjoy, feel free to share in the comments below. And it’s back to the craft table for now- Adios!
