I suppose it was no surprise that undergraduate and graduate degrees in literature and philosophy would follow, nor that attempts at self expression through the art of writing would follow.
A career as a criminal defense lawyer taught me to listen to each person's story for some essential truth about them as human beings and to retell that story in words they might have used had the benefit of my education and privilege.
Once a story teller, always a story teller, as I draw on the well of

Mind Canyon

Though it is early, the sun is intense and promises a withering day ahead. I swing my hydration pack onto my shoulders, adjust the drinking tube, and take a swallow from the bite-valve. Picking a path through what appears to be widely spaced chaparral should be easy, but there is actually little open space be Read more of this blog post »

“You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.”

Edward Abbey
“Why this cult of wilderness? Why the surly hatred of progress and development, the churlish resistance to all popular improvements? Very well, a fair question, but it’s been asked and answered a thousand times already; enough books to drive a man stark naked mad have dealt in detail with the question. There are many answers, all good, each sufficient. Peace is often mentioned; beauty; spiritual refreshment, whatever that means; re-creation for the soul, whatever that is; escape; novelty, the delight of something different; truth and understanding and wisdom—commendable virtues in any man, anytime; ecology and all that, meaning the salvation of variety, diversity, possibility and potentiality, the preservation of the genetic reservoir, the answers to questions that we have not yet even learned to ask, a connection to the origin of things, an opening into the future, a source of sanity for the present—all true, all wonderful, all more than enough to answer such a dumb dead degrading question as “Why wilderness?” To which, nevertheless, I shall append one further answer anyway: because we like the taste of freedom; because we like the smell of danger.”
Edward Abbey, Beyond the Wall: Essays from the Outside

“Don’t walk in front of me… I may not follow

Richard Wagamese
“We need mystery. Creator in her wisdom knew this. Mystery fills us with awe and wonder. They are the foundations of humility, and humility is the foundation of all learning. So we do not seek to unravel this. We honour it by letting it be that way forever.”

The quote of a grandmother explaining The Great Mystery of the universe to her grandson.”
