New Medium Article: Ned Stark’s Fall from Grace in A Song of Ice and Fire: The Price of Power

Good morning everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I just posted a new Medium article over on my Medium page. Today I am doing a deep dive into Ned Stark's fall from grace. Please note that this artcile does contain spoilers for "A Song of Ice and Ice" and "Game of Thrones." Sneak peek is below as well as a link to the full article.

Please note: All of my Medium articles are currently free.

Sneak Peek:

Ned Stark's Fall from Grace in A Song of Ice and Fire: The Price of Power

Author’s Note: Author’s Note: For the article, I will only be focusing on the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones, the first book of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.

In George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series, “A Song of Ice and Fire”, the character of Eddard Stark, also known as Ned Stark, stands as a pillar of honour and integrity in the tumultuous realm of Westeros. Ned's journey from his humble beginnings to becoming a trusted advisor to the crown is marked by his unwavering commitment to justice and his loyalty to his family and friends. However, this very power and adherence to principles ultimately led to his downfall, costing him his life. This essay explores Ned Stark's rise to power, his friendship with the crown, and the tragic events that unfolded, highlighting key examples from the books and examining how other characters perceived him.

Ned Stark’s ascent to power begins with his birth into House Stark, one of the oldest and most respected noble families in the North. As the Lord of Winterfell, he governed the vast territories of the North with a firm yet fair hand. Ned’s reputation for justice and honour permeated throughout the region, earning him the respect and loyalty of his bannermen and smallfolk alike. Known for his solemn demeanour, sense of duty, and measured judgment, Ned embodied the Stark words: “Winter is Coming.” His leadership was deeply rooted in his commitment to those principles.

Ned’s true rise to prominence occurred during Robert’s Rebellion, a civil war that aimed to depose the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen. The catalyst for this rebellion was the alleged kidnapping of Ned’s sister, Lyanna Stark, by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. When Lyanna’s father and brother demanded her return and were murdered by Aerys, the North was drawn into war. Ned, along with Robert Baratheon and Jon Arryn, led the rebellion that would ultimately change the fate of Westeros.

Throughout the conflict, Ned proved himself a capable and loyal commander. He marched South with the forces of House Stark and House Arryn and was present at many of the key battles. While Robert fought on the front lines and won the decisive victory at the Battle of the Trident, Ned played a quieter yet essential role, particularly in the final days of the war. After the sack of King’s Landing by the Lannister forces, Ned led a small group of men to the Tower of Joy, where he fought the remaining loyal Kingsguard to retrieve Lyanna, only to find her dying. This traumatic event would haunt him for the rest of his life, especially the promise he made to her regarding Jon Snow’s true parentage.

Following Robert’s victory and ascension to the Iron Throne, Ned returned to the North and resumed his role as Warden of the North. He avoided the politics of King’s Landing, preferring the stability and harsh but honest life of the North. However, his bond with Robert remained strong. Their friendship, forged in war and hardship, was based on mutual trust, respect, and shared memories of those they had lost.

Years later, after the death of Jon Arryn, Robert’s original Hand of the King, Robert travelled to Winterfell to ask Ned to serve in that role. Though reluctant, and warned by his wife Catelyn and others, Ned ultimately agreed out of loyalty and a sense of duty, especially after learning that Jon Arryn may have been murdered. This decision, intended to protect the realm and his friend, would be the beginning of his end.

Once in King’s Landing, Ned found himself surrounded by political intrigue and manipulation. The capital was a world where honour was a weakness, not a virtue. The Lannisters, particularly Cersei and her brother Jaime, wielded enormous influence over the court. Robert, now a disillusioned and indulgent king, had little interest in governance. He preferred tournaments and drink, leaving statecraft to his council. This dynamic created a vacuum that the Lannisters quickly filled, especially after Robert’s death.

New Medium Article: I Read Abby Jimenez’s Say You’ll Remember Me…Let’s Talk

Happy Friday all! I just wanted to let you know I just posted a new Medium article on my page. This time I am doing a deep dive into Say You'll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez.

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article may contain minor spoilers for Say You’ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez.

Abby Jimenez is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors and an auto-buy author. There is just something about the way she writes that always pulls me in. She has this way of taking everything in life and turning it into something beautiful. Her books always put a smile on my face and put me in a good mood. Her latest title, Say You’ll Remember Me, is no exception.

Say You’ll Remember Me follows Xavier and Samantha. Xavier Rush, a charming veterinarian with a "Greek god" appearance, is initially everything Samantha might want in a guy. He is handsome, caring, and even great with animals. His first impression is ruined when he opens his mouth and says something that sets off Samantha’s defiant side. She thrives on proving people wrong, especially those who come across as cocky or presumptuous. As their evening together progresses, they share an incredible, nearly perfect date. For a while, it seems like they might have something real. However, Samantha’s life is complicated by a family crisis, and she feels she cannot afford to pursue a relationship with Xavier. In an emotional moment, she begs him to forget her and keep their night as a beautiful, unforgettable memory, no matter how much it hurts. Despite the distance, time, and her request, Samantha can’t shake the deep bond they formed, and Xavier can’t forget her either. Eventually, they both realise that sometimes the perfect memory isn’t enough. What they need is a future, one that could be even more memorable than a single night. It’s a story about love, second chances, and the power of making memories together, even when life gets complicated.

At its core, this is a romance book, but there is more to it than that. We have Samantha and Xavier, who meet by chance. Samantha ends up at Xavier’s vet clinic with a kitten, who is supposed to die. It needs surgery, but Xaiver, who is putting on the grumpy front, believes that it will not survive. To prove him wrong, Samantha ends up raising the funds to save the kitten’s life and goes back to rub it in his face. By chance, he asks her out to dinner, which results in a romance. The only thing is that it is supposed to be a one-night deal. However, as is to be in these kinds of stories, they end up falling for each other and developing feelings for each other. Great, right? Well, there is a problem. Samantha is going back to California to take care of her mother, who has dementia and is getting worse. While Samantha's mom’s dementia is not the core of the book, it plays a big part in the plot. We see how it affects all aspects of Samantha’s life and her quest to give her mom the best care possible.

We see how much of an impact her mom’s dementia has on the family. While they do want ot honour their mother’s wishes for her to stay in her home, things are not always as clear as what they seem. The family loves her and wishes for her to have the best life possible. However, it takes its toll on them. Maybe saying that I enjoyed this aspect of the story is taking it a bit too far. I think it adds a layer to the story and makes it much more complex than it would have been without it. We see how it tears the family apart and how it takes a toll on everyone’s life. These people are truly trying to do what is best and do want to take care of her. However, it does get to the point where it becomes too much, and they have to start thinking about other options. It’s heartbreaking to see on the page, and a sad story. It’s real, though. Every day, some families are being forced to make the same choices, and it breaks them. I do appreciate the book for having this in there. It shows us just how complex and complicated caring for someone is, and the impact it can have on people. This book stands out because it shows us that not everything is all peaches and roses, that these are very difficult choices that people have to make, and they should not be judged for it.

New Medium Article: Avatar: the Last Airbender’s Forgotten Redemption Arc

Happy Saturday everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I just posted a new Medium article on my Medium page. Today I am doing Avatar: the Last Airbender’s Forgotten Redemption Arc. Below is a sneak peek as well as the link to the full article.

All of my Medium articles are currently free.

Sneak Peek:
Spoiler Warning: This article focuses solely on the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series and does not contain any spoilers for the graphic novels or The Legend of Korra. This article contains spoilers for the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series only.

While Zuko's redemption arc in Avatar: The Last Airbender is often hailed as one of the most compelling storylines in the series, Sokka's journey of growth and maturity frequently goes overlooked. Though less dramatic than Zuko's, Sokka's development from a comic relief character to a capable leader and strategist is equally significant. His arc showcases the power of self-discovery, resilience, and the importance of intellect and resourcefulness in a world dominated by bending. By exploring Sokka's transformation, fans can better appreciate the nuanced storytelling that makes Avatar: The Last Airbender a beloved series.

Sokka's backstory is deeply rooted in loss and responsibility. Growing up in the Southern Water Tribe, Sokka was raised by his grandmother, Gran Gran, after his mother was killed during a Fire Nation raid. His father, Hakoda, along with the other men of the tribe, left to fight in the war, leaving Sokka as one of the few males remaining in his village. This thrust Sokka into a position of responsibility at a young age, feeling the burden of protecting his sister, Katara, and the other villagers.

This experience shaped Sokka's early character in several ways. It instilled in him a strong sense of duty and the desire to prove himself as a warrior and protector, despite lacking bending abilities. His early attempts to lead and defend his tribe were often met with frustration, leading him to develop a somewhat defensive and sarcastic demeanour. Sokka's reliance on his wits and non-bending skills, such as his talent for strategy and invention, became his way of compensating for his perceived inadequacies. This background set the stage for his character growth, as he gradually learned to balance his protective instincts with humility, courage, and a deep sense of loyalty to his friends and family.

In Book One: Water of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka initially comes across as a somewhat unlikable character, particularly due to his often sexist attitudes and rigid views on gender roles. As one of the few older males left in his village after the departure of the warriors, Sokka feels immense pressure to fill the void left by his father and the other men. This burden exacerbates his need to assert himself, often in ways that come off as dismissive or condescending, especially towards women.

Sokka's sexism is evident from the very first episode, "The Boy in the Iceberg," where he dismisses Katara's waterbending as trivial, insisting that their focus should be on "important" things like hunting and protecting the tribe. He frequently belittles her abilities and is initially resistant to the idea that women can be warriors. This mindset is apparent in "The Warriors of Kyoshi," where Sokka is visibly uncomfortable and dismissive when he first encounters the all-female Kyoshi Warriors. His initial interactions with Suki, the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, are marked by condescension. He tells her that fighting is "a man's job," revealing his deep-seated belief in traditional gender roles.

However, Sokka's experience on Kyoshi Island serves as a crucial turning point in his character development. Suki challenges his views by not only besting him in combat but also by demonstrating the strength, skill, and discipline of the Kyoshi Warriors. In response, Sokka begins to question his preconceived notions about gender and strength. By the end of the episode, he humbly asks Suki to train him, recognising that his previous attitudes were misguided. This is a significant moment for Sokka, as it marks the beginning of his transformation from a narrow-minded, somewhat arrogant young man into someone more open-minded and respectful of others' abilities, regardless of gender.

This change is further cemented in later episodes. For example, in "Jet," Sokka's scepticism and caution prove valuable, as he correctly identifies Jet's true intentions, despite the charismatic rebel's ability to charm others, including Katara. Here, Sokka's growing sense of responsibility and his willingness to stand by his convictions, even when unpopular, begin to emerge more clearly.

Sokka's relationship with Suki continues to evolve throughout the series. In "The Serpent's Pass," they meet again, and Sokka's respect for her is evident. He treats her as an equal, and their relationship deepens into a romantic bond based on mutual respect and admiration. Sokka's transformation is further highlighted in "Sokka's Master," where he trains under the sword master Piandao, seeking to refine his skills and prove his worth as a non-bender in a world dominated by bending. Sokka's journey in Book One lays the foundation for his continued growth, as he learns to value his abilities while also recognising the strengths of those around him.

Sokka’s development in Book One is significant because it marks the beginning of his journey toward becoming a true leader and strategist, someone who values intellect, resourcefulness, and the contributions of everyone on the team. His early unlikability and sexist attitudes are not just flaws but necessary obstacles that he must overcome to grow into the person who will play a crucial role in the eventual defeat of the Fire Nation. Through his interactions with Suki and his experiences on their journey, Sokka learns to challenge his own beliefs, embrace humility, and understand the value of diverse strengths, qualities that will define him throughout the rest of the series.
