New Youtube Video: The Home Builders by Varsha Bajaj Read Aloud
It may be a few hours before this pops up. My internet is really lagging right now.
Link: https://youtu.be/Gq65_Izxthk
Description:
Today I am doing a read aloud of The Home Builders by Varsha Bajaj!
Summary From The Publisher:
This vibrantly illustrated picture book celebrates a variety of woodland creatures as they make their homes and prepare for their young.
Welcome to a serene woodland where lots of expectant animal parents are in their "nesting" phase--that is, busy preparing safe, cozy homes for their growing families. As they dig, tunnel, gnaw, and gather, they create dens, burrows, lodges, and, of course, nests. Soon the woods are full of new little ones peeping, crawling, romping, and snuggling--and with artwork so gorgeous that it feels like an invitation into the scenery it's depicting, readers will be eager to join them in their beautiful home.

New Medium Article: Let’s Talk Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas
Good morning and happy Friday! I just wanted to let you know that I just posted a new Medium article to my Medium page. Today I am going to be talking about Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas. Below is the link to the full artilce, as well as a sneak peek.
All of my articles are currently free on Medium!

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article contains spoilers for the “Crescent City” series by Sarah J. Maas.
“Crescent City” is a high-fantasy series by Sarah J. Maas, marking her debut in adult fiction. The series is set in a modern, magical world where humans and supernatural beings coexist, blending urban and high fantasy elements. It blends romance, action, and mystery in a richly imagined world, exploring complex themes of power, identity, and destiny. The series is praised for its intricate world-building, dynamic characters, and emotional depth, making it a compelling read for adult fantasy enthusiasts.
I am a huge Sarah J. Maas fan. I have been reading her work since she was on fictionpress. Her other two series, Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses, are on my list of favourite series. I was excited to read her debut adult series. I wanted to see what she could bring to the table and was excited to see her expand her writing, world-building, and characters. However, I found myself disappointed by this series more than once.
Book One: House of Earth and Blood
Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars
House of Earth and Blood follows Bryce Quinlan, a half-Fae, half-human party girl living in Crescent City, also known as Lunathion. Bryce's life takes a dark turn when her best friend Danika Fendyr and the rest of Danika's wolf pack are brutally murdered. Bryce is devastated and struggles to move on, turning to work and nightlife to cope with her grief. Two years later, a similar murder occurs, and Bryce is tasked by the Archangel Micah Domitus to assist in the investigation. She is paired with Hunt Athalar, a fallen angel enslaved to Micah as punishment for his participation in a rebellion. As they dig deeper into the case, they uncover dark secrets about the city's power structures and confront dangerous forces. Throughout their journey, Bryce and Hunt develop a deep bond and discover hidden strengths within themselves. The book blends themes of love, loss, and resilience, culminating in a thrilling climax that reshapes the balance of power in Crescent City.
Let me start by saying that House of Earth and Blood was a lot tamer than A Court of Thorns and Roses, even though it's marketed as an adult book. I had a great time reading it, but I must admit, it’s probably one of my least favourite Sarah J. Maas books. That’s not to say it’s bad—there are just parts that could have been trimmed down. The ending was fantastic, and the beginning was solid, but the middle felt like it dragged on a bit too long.
As the first book in a new series, a lot of time is spent building up the world and the magic system. Initially, it’s quite overwhelming; there’s a ton of information thrown at you in a short span. However, once everything started to click, I enjoyed it.
Bryce’s character was a highlight for me. Although she shares traits with other Maas characters, this type of character works well for her storytelling. Bryce is a complex character who has suffered immense trauma and is trying to cope with her grief in the best way she knows how. She’s broken, clinging to the past, but we get to see her at her lowest and watch her grow into an even stronger woman—not that she wasn’t strong before. I love seeing characters evolve, and Bryce’s journey from despair to resilience is compelling.
The friendship element is also beautifully handled. Bryce’s bond with Danika and the aftermath of her loss are central to Bryce’s character development. The trauma of losing her best friend and the subsequent struggle to rebuild her life adds depth to the narrative. It’s about being broken and having to start over, finding strength in the love and memories of those we’ve lost.
The writing is typical of Sarah J. Maas. Although this is an adult book, it often reads like a young adult novel. It’s accessible and easy to follow, despite the characters being older. There were a few moments that I thought could have been better executed, but the ending truly makes up for it.
Overall, I enjoyed House of Earth and Blood, and I’m glad I read it. I ended up buying a copy because the waiting list at my library was nearly a year long. If you’re a fan of Sarah J. Maas, you’ll likely enjoy this book. If you’re not a fan, it probably won’t change your mind. And if you’re new to Sarah J. Maas, I wouldn’t start with this one.

New Medium Article: The Resonance of Familial Bonds in The Promised Neverland
Happy Friday! I just wanted to let you know I just posted a new Medium article over on my page. Today I am doing a deep dive into the role of familial bonds in The Promised Neverland.

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article contains spoilers for The Promised Neverland manga by Kaiu Shirai.
The Promised Neverland, a gripping manga penned by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu, intricately weaves a tale of survival, deceit, and the enduring strength of familial bonds. At its core, the narrative revolves around Emma, Norman, and Ray, whose lives are inexorably entwined by the sinister reality of Grace Field House and their pursuit of freedom. Throughout the series, the theme of family serves as a powerful catalyst for change. It compels the protagonists to make painful choices, navigate treacherous paths, and relentlessly strive for a future where they can reunite with their chosen family, the fellow orphans from the farm who mean everything to them.
Emma, the central protagonist whose optimism radiates like a beacon in the darkest of times, fully embodies the theme of family. Her unwavering commitment to her friends and her dream of building a world where everyone can live freely stems from the emotional ties formed within the walls of Grace Field House. From the very beginning, Emma sees the other orphans not as peers or fellow residents, but as siblings. This perspective shapes every thought and action of hers. She does not merely want to survive; she wants all of them to survive together. The warmth of those early scenes, where she plays with the younger children or comforts them during bedtime, reveals the strength of her love long before the horror of the farm is uncovered.
Emma’s compassion and hope never waver, even in the face of cruelty and despair. When she discovers the fate that awaits them at the farm, she is devastated, but her first instinct is not fear for herself. She thinks of the others, especially the youngest children, who cannot understand the danger they are in. Her ability to remain focused on the well-being of others is what sets her apart. She declares, "I want to create a place where we can all be a family again," and that desire becomes the foundation for everything she does afterwards. It is not simply about escape; it is about restoration. She dreams of reuniting the family that has been shattered by the system and refuses to accept a future that does not include everyone.
Her decisions, from devising the plan to cross the wall to refusing to abandon the younger children, show that her love is not passive. It is fierce and unwavering. During the first escape, she willingly gives up her chance to flee to ensure that the younger children are not left behind. She chooses to remain at Grace Field for another two years to raise and prepare them, a choice that requires immense patience and personal sacrifice. In doing so, she demonstrates that her belief in family is not limited to words or intentions. It is proven through action and perseverance.
Later in the series, Emma’s vision of family expands beyond Grace Field House. When she encounters children from other farms and even begins to empathise with certain demons, it becomes clear that her concept of family is rooted in empathy and understanding rather than biological connection or shared upbringing. Her decision to pursue a world where humans and demons no longer need to prey on one another is another expression of her belief in coexistence and protection. She does not seek vengeance, even after witnessing horrific acts. She believes that if families are to survive and thrive, the cycle of cruelty must be broken on all sides.
One of the most poignant moments comes near the end of the series when Emma makes a final sacrifice to secure peace. She offers to erase her memories in exchange for a new world where all the children can live in safety. This act is not driven by guilt or desperation but by an unshakable sense of love. Even without memories, she hopes to create bonds again. Her idea of family is so deeply rooted in who she is that she believes she will find her way back to them, even if she forgets their names. Her willingness to be forgotten, to vanish from the people she cherishes most, underscores how completely she has devoted herself to their future.
Emma becomes more than a leader. She becomes the emotional foundation that gives the others strength. Her love is the force that holds the group together, especially during the most harrowing moments of their journey. Her compassion is not a weakness, but the very reason they succeed. Through Emma, the story argues that hope and love are not naive. They are powerful choices that can challenge even the darkest systems. Her belief in family is not abstract. It is lived out in every risk she takes, every child she comforts, and every promise she keeps, even when the cost is nearly everything.
Norman, the intellectual powerhouse of the trio, approaches the idea of family through the lens of strategy and sacrifice. While Emma leads with her heart, Norman often leads with his mind. He believes that logic and planning are essential tools in a world where survival depends on outwitting a monstrous system. Yet beneath the precision of his decisions lies a fierce and unwavering devotion to the people he loves. Norman is not cold or distant. He simply carries the weight of their futures on his shoulders and chooses to act in ways that may seem harsh to protect them all.
His willingness to bear suffering becomes evident when he voluntarily surrenders himself to the adults, knowing he will be shipped out. Rather than panic or break down, he accepts his fate with a calm determination that masks the fear and grief he must feel. In those final moments before his departure, he continues to reassure Emma and Ray, placing their emotional needs above his own. This moment reveals the depth of his love. He believes that by giving himself up, he can buy time for the others and remove himself as a liability. Norman's sacrifice is not impulsive. It is calculated, deliberate, and rooted in the belief that his absence will ultimately serve the greater good.
After it is revealed that he survived and was taken to Lambda 7214, Norman endures unspeakable suffering during the experiments. He is subjected to testing, isolated, and transformed into a pawn within a cruel research facility. Rather than break under the pressure, he channels his trauma into action. He gathers allies, studies the demon world, and begins to craft a plan that would eradicate the demons. His time at Lambda hardens him. He returns to his friends no longer as the boy they once knew, but as the leader of a movement dedicated to ending the system through extermination.

Sneak Peek:
The city surrounds me, but it doesn’t touch me. Even though I am in the middle of a rather large group of people, I am alone. I never understood how you can be alone in a large group until I came here.
I lower myself down on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and stare into the Reflecting Pool. Little ducks dunk themselves in the water, while small children laugh in delight at the sight. Their parents pause and watch as school field trip groups charge up the steps. Tourists, their large cameras and backpacks in tow, check guidebooks as they shield their eyes from the blazing sun. People rush around me, waiting to get a sight of our sixteenth president sitting in his chair.
Then, there’s me. I am here alone on a beautiful summer day, taking all of this in. I am part of the group, yet I am not.
I don’t want to admit how hard this move has been on me. I came here for a job. I moved from my sheltered small town to the big city. I am one of the few to get out, as they say. My parents have wasted no time in bragging about their daughter working in the capital of the United States. It’s like I have made it, and I have.
Yes, the job has been worth it. Every day, I am surrounded by something new. The research has been good for me. I am at the forefront of history. I have never been one who wanted to go out and find the artefacts in the field. I enjoy seeing them come in, discovering what they are, and getting to share them with the public. I enjoy seeing people’s eyes light up as the past comes to life before them. I even enjoy all the paperwork.
What I do miss is having someone to talk to. I come home to an empty apartment. I don’t know my neighbours. I don’t know anyone. So, to make up for it, I come to the public space, where the tourists are. It allows me to escape.
It allows me to feel like I am truly a part of this place.
People bustle around me. Some of them are coming so close that I have to move, or else they will step on me. I frown. Am I truly that invisible, or do people just not pay attention anymore? Do they view themselves as being that important that they are willing to step on someone else?
I sigh. No, most of these people are here trying to see as much as they can in their short time in the city. This is just a temporary stop for them until they have to go back to their reality. For some, this is their only chance to see this city.
Plus, it is a holiday. It’s our country’s Independence Day, and it seems like everyone in the country has decided to come to one city.
I get to my feet and wince as the sun hits me. That is the thing about cities: no one tells you how hot it is in the summer. In a few hours, the sun will go down, and hopefully, there will be some relief. I don’t want to leave, though. I want to see the fireworks. I have seen them on television, but something tells me they will be even better in person than on the screen.
“I was wondering when you would give up.”
I turn. A man about my age stands a few steps behind me. I jump, wondering how long he has been watching me. I chew on my lip. While I think this is a safe area, this is a major city.
One can never be too careful.
He starts towards me, his eyes dancing. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to hurt you.”
I raise an eyebrow. “Isn’t that what all of the stalkers say?”
He snorts. “Yes, I suppose it is.” He sticks his hand out. “I’m James, but most people call me Jamie.”
I look down at his hand. “What are you doing?”
“I’m introducing myself so you don’t think I am a stalker. Stalkers aren’t strangers.” He shoves his hand closer to me. “It is customary to shake someone’s hand when it is offered to you.”
I reach out and give his hand a jerk.
“Just like it is customary to tell someone your name when they offer theirs.”
“No, actually, it’s not. However, I am a polite person, so I will tell you mine.”
Jamie waits.
“It’s Bryce.”
“Bryce?”
“Yes.”
“Aren’t you female?”
I scowl at him. “I tell you my name, and you make fun of me. That is not very gentlemanly, like.”
Jamie smirks. “Who says I am a gentleman? After all, you did call me a stalker.”
“True.”
A beat passes.
“So, what brings you to the grand Lincoln Memorial, Bryce?” Jamie asks. “Did your family drag you here?”
“No.”
“I didn’t think so.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “You don’t’ strike me as a tourist, but you don’t have the ease of a local.”
“What do you mean by that?” I ask.
“You don’t seem annoyed by all of the tourists, but you aren’t taking a million pictures.” To prove his point, a middle-aged man stops beside us, takes a few pictures and moves on.
“No, I’m not a tourist.” Now, it’s my turn to eye him. “Are you a tourist or local?”
“Neither.” He lowers himself down on a step and pats the space next to him. Much to my surprise, I find myself following him. “I came here for work.”
“Me too.”
“Do you like working in the city?”
“I do.” I pause. “Do you like your job?”
“I do. It can be a bit intense sometimes.” He shudders. “It’s not nearly as bad as the winters, though.”
I laugh. “The winters are tamer here than where I’m from.”
His face shifts to one of horror. “You mean it’s possible for more snow to fall than what we got this winter?”
“Oh, yes.”
“Great.”
“So, Jamie, where are you from if you aren’t used to winters?”
“Texas.”
“Well, that explains why you should like a cowboy.”
A small grin forms on Jamie’s lips. “Well, my family does own a cattle ranch.”
“Oh.”
“So, where are you from, if you are used to the winters?”
“Maine.”
“Makes sense.”
Silence falls between us.
“So...Why did you leave Texas?” I asked after a few minutes. “I know you said it was for a job, but was that the only reason?”
“Irrational fear of cattle,” Jamie asks, his voice light.
“Are you serious?”
“You tell me.”
My brow deepens. “I think you are messing with me.”
“I could be or I could very well be telling the truth.”
Have a wonderful day!

New Medium Article: Lost Soul: The Impact of Angel’s Lost Soul on Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Happy Friday everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I just posted a new Medium article over on my Medium page. Today I am doing one for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Link to the full article is below, as well as a sneak peek.

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article contains spoilers for the TV Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
In the haunting world of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Angel's loss of his soul stands as a pivotal moment, a cataclysmic shift that reverberated through the core of the narrative, leaving emotional wreckage in its wake. This soul-shattering event was not merely a plot twist but a seismic upheaval that altered the very fabric of the show, leaving scars that would linger long after the dust settled.
Angel's soul, a fragile tether to his humanity, was a beacon of light in the shadowy abyss of his vampiric existence. It was a flickering flame amidst the encroaching darkness, a fragile barrier separating him from the monstrous instincts that lurked within. However, like a delicate crystal poised on the edge of a precipice, it was tragically susceptible to shattering.
The cause of Angel's descent into darkness was his passionate love for Buffy, a love that ignited a spark of hope within his tortured soul. Their romance was a delicate dance between light and shadow, an impossible union between a slayer of the night and a creature of darkness. Yet, it was a love that defied the odds, a love that promised redemption amidst the chaos of their world.
Fate, ever cruel and capricious, had other plans. In a moment of vulnerability, Angel succumbed to the temptation of blissful oblivion, allowing himself to experience a moment of true happiness in the arms of his beloved Buffy. It was a fleeting moment of ecstasy, a brief respite from the relentless torment of his existence. Yet, it was this very moment that proved to be his undoing.
For in the aftermath of their passion, Angel's soul was wrenched from his grasp, torn away by the unforgiving jaws of destiny. The curse that had bound his soul to his humanity was cruel and unforgiving, punishing him for daring to seek happiness in a world steeped in darkness. In an instant, the fragile veneer of his humanity was shattered, leaving only the hollow shell of a remorseless killer in its wake.
The impact of Angel's loss of soul rippled through the narrative with the force of a tidal wave, leaving devastation in its wake. Buffy, once the beacon of hope in Angel's bleak existence, was left reeling from the betrayal of her beloved. The man she loved, the man she had trusted with her heart, had become the very thing she had sworn to destroy. It was a betrayal that cut her to the core, leaving her adrift in a sea of uncertainty and despair.
In the wreckage of their shattered romance, there lay a glimmer of hope. For in the depths of her despair, Buffy found strength she never knew she possessed, rising from the ashes of her broken heart with a newfound determination to vanquish the darkness that threatened to consume her world. It was a journey fraught with peril and sacrifice, yet it was a journey she undertook with unwavering resolve.
As for Angel, his descent into darkness served as a grim reminder of the fragility of redemption in a world steeped in sin. Without his soul to anchor him to his humanity, he became a creature of pure instinct, a remorseless predator driven by an insatiable thirst for blood. Yet, amidst the darkness that consumed him, there still lingered a flicker of the man he once was, a tortured soul crying out for redemption in the wilderness of his despair.
The loss of Angel's soul had a profound and transformative effect on his outlook on life, love, and redemption. Once a brooding and tormented figure, haunted by the sins of his past, Angel's descent into darkness shattered the fragile semblance of hope that had sustained him for so long. Yet, amidst the darkness that consumed him, he emerged with a newfound sense of purpose and determination, forged in the crucible of his despair.
Before losing his soul, Angel was a tortured soul, burdened by the weight of his guilt and remorse. He saw himself as a monster, unworthy of redemption or love, doomed to walk the earth as a perpetual outcast. Yet, despite his inner turmoil, there still lingered a flicker of hope within him, a belief that perhaps, someday, he could find redemption and atone for his sins.
However, the loss of his soul shattered that fragile hope, plunging him into a bottomless abyss of darkness and despair. Stripped of his humanity, he became a remorseless predator, driven by his insatiable thirst for blood and power. It was a descent into madness, a journey into the depths of his darkness from which he feared he would never return.
