Description:
Today I am doing a read aloud of A Story for Small Bear by Alice B. McGinty (Author), Richard Jones (Illustrator).
Summary:
In this sweet, lyrical picture book, perfect for bedtime, a playful cub prepares for hibernation, saving just enough time for Mama to share a story before they must settle down.

Autumn is ending and a chilly breeze is drifting in, which can mean only one thing-- it's time to hibernate over the long winter. But before Small Bear does, she'd like for Mama to tell her some stories. Mama agrees, with one condition: all the preparation must get done-- no dilly, no dally. So Small Bear tries to be good, venturing off to find sprigs for her winter bed, splishing and splashing in the stream, and climbing up, up, up into the tall forest trees in search of acorns. When she finally returns home, Small Bear snuggles down with Mama in their den. Did she make it back in time? "You did," Mama answers, and pulls her in close. And then Mama tells the most wonderful tale of a little bear--just like Small Bear--who, while enjoying the world around her, saved just enough time for stories.

New Medium Article: Was Light Yagami’s Downfall Inevitable in Death Note?

Happy Saturday everyone! I would like to let you know that I just posted a new article over on my Medium page. It is back in my regular content. Today I am doing an in-depth look into Light Yagami from Death Note. This is the second article that I have written surrounding this very complex and interesting character. Link to the full article is below, as well as a sneak peek.

Sneak Peek:
Was Light Yagami's Downfall Inevitable in Death Note?

Author’s Note: This article contains spoilers for Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba.

Death Note, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, is a masterpiece of suspense and psychological drama. At its heart lies the captivating character of Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing their name while picturing their face. As the series progresses, Light's descent into darkness becomes inevitable, and the foreshadowing of his fall from grace is masterfully woven into the narrative, particularly evident in the manga version.

From the beginning of the series, subtle hints and clues are strategically placed to suggest the eventual downfall of Light Yagami. One of the earliest indications of Light's potential for corruption is seen in his reaction to finding the Death Note. Rather than feeling shock or revulsion at the power it offers, Light's initial response is one of curiosity and excitement. This sets the stage for his gradual transformation from a morally upright individual to a megalomaniac consumed by power. Furthermore, the symbolism surrounding Light's character serves as a foreshadowing of his eventual downfall. Throughout the series, Light is frequently depicted with imagery associated with divinity or godliness, such as his placement in high positions or scenes where he is bathed in light. These visual cues not only highlight Light's self-perception as a deity-like figure with the power to judge and control others but also foreshadow the hubris that will ultimately lead to his downfall.

When Light Yagami discovers the Death Note, his initial reaction and subsequent view of himself undergo a significant transformation. At the outset, Light is portrayed as a highly intelligent and morally upright student, disillusioned by the perceived injustices of the world. However, upon encountering the Death Note and learning of its powers, Light's perception of himself shifts dramatically, leading to a profound change in his worldview and moral compass.

Initially, Light views himself as a righteous avenger, believing that he alone possesses the power to rid the world of criminals and establish a utopian society free from corruption and wrongdoing. He sees himself as a hero, a divine agent of justice who is above the law and capable of dispensing judgment upon those he deems unworthy of life. This inflated sense of self-importance and righteousness fuels Light's initial enthusiasm for the Death Note and his eagerness to wield its power for his ends.

As Light's use of the Death Note escalates and he becomes more deeply entrenched in his role as Kira, his view of himself evolves into one of hubris and megalomania. He begins to see himself as a god-like figure, untouchable and infallible in his pursuit of justice. This delusional belief in his superiority leads Light to adopt increasingly extreme measures to maintain control and eliminate anyone who dares to oppose him.
Ultimately, Light's view of himself as a god-like figure with the power to shape the world in his image proves to be his undoing. His arrogance and hubris blind him to the consequences of his actions and alienate those around him, leading to his eventual downfall at the hands of his adversaries. In the end, Light's journey serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power and the seductive allure of self-righteousness, leaving a lasting impact on both the character and the audience. Light's view of himself is shaped by his interactions with Ryuk, the Shinigami who dropped the Death Note into the human world. Ryuk's detached amusement at Light's actions and his warnings of the consequences of using the Death Note serve to both reinforce and challenge Light's perception of himself. While Light initially sees himself as a righteous saviour, Ryuk's presence serves as a constant reminder of the moral ambiguity of his actions and the inevitability of his downfall.

The introduction of the character Ryuk, the Shinigami who originally owned the Death Note, serves as a constant reminder of the consequences of Light's actions. Ryuk's presence, with his ominous warnings and detached amusement at Light's descent into darkness, foreshadows the inevitable consequences of Light's hubris and the toll it will take on his psyche. Ryuk, the Shinigami who drops the Death Note into the human world, plays a pivotal role in Light Yagami's downfall in Death Note. From the moment Ryuk appears, his presence serves as both a catalyst for Light's descent into darkness and a harbinger of his eventual downfall. Ryuk's motivations are enigmatic, as he claims to be an impartial observer, yet he finds amusement in watching the chaos and destruction that ensues from Light's use of the Death Note.

Ryuk's initial introduction to Light is crucial in setting the tone for their relationship and foreshadowing Light's eventual downfall. When Light discovers the Death Note, Ryuk appears before him, revealing the notebook's powers and the rules governing its use. Despite Light's initial shock and disbelief, Ryuk's nonchalant demeanour and casual attitude toward human life suggest a darker side to Shinigami's character. This initial interaction serves as a warning to Light of the consequences of wielding such power and foreshadows the toll it will take on his psyche. Throughout the series, Ryuk serves as a constant reminder of the moral ambiguity of Light's actions and the limits of his power. Despite Light's attempts to control and manipulate those around him, Ryuk remains a detached observer, offering cryptic advice and commentary on Light's decisions. Ryuk's role as an impartial observer highlights the inevitability of Light's downfall and serves as a counterbalance to Light's increasingly delusional belief in his godlike status.

New Medium Article: I Read a Good Girl's Guide to Murder and I Have Thoughts

Happy Friday everyone! I just posted a new Medium article. It's my thoughts on Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder! Link to the full article is below as well as a sneak peek.

Link: https://alysonserenastone.medium.com/...

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article contains minor spoilers for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series by Holly Jackson.

"A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" is a young adult mystery thriller series written by Holly Jackson. Since its debut, the series has garnered praise for its compelling characters, intricate plots, and suspenseful storytelling. It's a must-read for fans of YA mysteries and thrillers. The series follows the protagonist, Pippa Fitz-Amobi, a high school student with a passion for solving crimes. The first book in the series, also titled A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, was published in 2019.

In this thrilling debut, Pippa decides to investigate a murder case that occurred five years earlier in her town. Despite the official ruling of suicide, Pippa believes there's more to the story and starts her investigation, uncovering shocking secrets along the way. The second instalment follows Pippa as she tries to leave her amateur detective work behind. However, when a local girl goes missing, Pippa finds herself drawn back into the world of investigation. As she delves deeper, she realizes that the truth might be more dangerous than she anticipated. In the final book of the trilogy, Pippa is thrust into another mystery when a group of people from her past resurfaces, and she receives a threatening message. Determined to protect herself and her loved ones, Pippa must once again use her investigative skills to uncover the truth before it's too late.

Why Should I Read This Series?
In a world inundated with an array of literature choices, it can be daunting to select a series that promises both entertainment and intellectual stimulation. However, nestled within the realm of young adult fiction lies a gem that captivates readers with its gripping narrative, complex characters, and tantalizing mysteries. Holly Jackson's "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" series not only offers an exhilarating escape but also challenges readers to unravel intricate puzzles alongside its intrepid protagonist, Pippa Fitz-Amobi.

At the heart of the series is Pippa Fitz-Amobi, a relatable and determined young woman whose tenacity and intellect drive the narrative forward. Unlike conventional heroines, Pippa defies stereotypes by embracing her flaws and showcasing vulnerability, endearing herself to readers. Her unwavering commitment to seeking justice and uncovering the truth serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging readers to confront their fears and pursue their passions with fervour.

Jackson masterfully crafts each instalment with meticulously plotted mysteries that keep readers on the edge of their seats. From unsolved murders to disappearances shrouded in secrecy, the series offers a labyrinth of clues and red herrings that challenge even the most astute armchair detectives. As readers immerse themselves in Pippa's investigations, they are swept up in a whirlwind of suspense, eagerly piecing together clues and conjecturing theories in a bid to unmask the culprits.

Beneath the surface of the riveting whodunits lie nuanced explorations of themes such as friendship, betrayal, and the quest for identity. Jackson deftly navigates these complex topics, infusing her narratives with depth and authenticity. Through Pippa's interactions with a diverse cast of characters, readers are prompted to contemplate the intricacies of human relationships and the moral dilemmas that accompany them. Moreover, the series confronts societal issues such as prejudice and privilege, sparking important conversations and fostering empathy among readers.

In a genre often criticized for its lack of diversity, "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" stands out for its inclusive portrayal of characters from varying backgrounds. Whether it's Pippa's steadfast best friend Ravi or the enigmatic Sal Singh, Jackson deftly weaves a tapestry of identities that reflects the rich tapestry of the real world. By centring marginalized voices and celebrating their experiences, the series not only broadens readers' perspectives but also empowers them to embrace the complexities of their own identities.

Holly Jackson's "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" series offers readers a captivating blend of suspense, intrigue, and heart. Through its compelling protagonist, intricate mysteries, nuanced themes, and empowering representation, the series transcends the confines of its genre, leaving an indelible mark on readers of all ages. So, if you're seeking a literary adventure that will keep you guessing until the very end, look no further than this captivating series. Prepare to embark on a journey filled with twists, turns, and revelations that will leave you eagerly awaiting each new instalment.

New Medium Article: Embracing Shadows

Good morning everyone! I just posted a new article on my Medium page. It is a detailed look into the characters of Faith and Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In this article, I explore how their characters are alike and different, how their fates are interconnected, and what choices they made that impacted their characters.

The link to the full article is below, as well as a sneak peek.

Serena

Link: https://alysonserenastone.medium.com/...

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article contains spoilers for the TV Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Buffy and Faith, two Slayers bound by destiny and yet divided by their approaches to life and duty. They stand as striking foils of each other, each reflecting contrasting facets of strength, vulnerability, and resilience. Their intertwined destinies weave a complex tapestry of growth, destruction, and redemption, revealing the power of choice amidst the relentless pull of fate.

From the outset, Buffy and Faith emerge as opposites, their paths diverging even as they tread the same treacherous terrain. Buffy, the Chosen One, embraces her calling with a sense of duty and moral clarity, guided by a steadfast commitment to protect the innocent and uphold the values of humanity. In contrast, Faith, the Rogue Slayer, embodies a rebellious spirit, unshackled by convention or conscience, navigating the shadows with a reckless abandon born of disillusionment and pain.

Their differences are evident not only in their actions but also in their motivations and outlooks. Buffy finds solace in her relationships, drawing strength from her bonds with friends and mentors who offer support, guidance, and unconditional love. In Willow, Xander, Giles, and even Angel, she discovers a sense of belonging and purpose that anchors her amidst the chaos of her existence. Faith, on the other hand, is adrift in a sea of isolation, her only companions the demons that haunt her dreams and the darkness that whispers promises of power and freedom. Bereft of meaningful connections, she seeks validation through conquest and control, seeking to fill the void within her with transient pleasures and hollow victories.

One of the most significant examples of Buffy’s support system influencing her choices can be seen in her relationship with her friends, particularly Willow and Xander. From the beginning of the series, Willow and Xander stand by Buffy’s side, offering unwavering loyalty, humour, and emotional support. Their friendship provides Buffy with a sense of belonging and acceptance, empowering her to confront the myriad challenges she faces as the Slayer. For instance, in the Season 2 episode “Becoming, Part Two,” when Buffy faces the heartbreaking decision to kill Angel to save the world, it is Willow who stands by her side, offering comfort and understanding in her darkest hour. This connection enables Buffy to find the strength to make the ultimate sacrifice, knowing that she is not alone in her struggle.

Similarly, Buffy’s relationship with her Watcher, Rupert Giles, serves as a source of guidance and mentorship throughout the series. Giles provides Buffy with invaluable wisdom, training, and support, helping her to hone her skills as a Slayer and navigate the complexities of her destiny. In moments of doubt or uncertainty, Buffy can always turn to Giles for advice and counsel, knowing he has her best interests at heart. This connection is exemplified in episodes such as “Helpless” and “The Gift,” where Giles’s unwavering belief in Buffy’s abilities gives her the confidence to face seemingly insurmountable odds.

New Medium Article: The Case for a Ravenclaw Lead

Happy Saturday everyone! I just wanted to pop on and let you know that I just posted a new article on my Medium page. It's called "The Case for a Ravenclaw Lead." The link to the full article is below, as well as a sneak peek.

Serena
Link: https://alysonserenastone.medium.com/...

Sneak Peek:
Both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchises have offered us compelling characters and villains from all different paths of life. The world is centred around the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw. Each of these houses has noble traits but also has characteristics that make them flawed. It is this mixture of both good and evil that allows all of us to see ourselves in at least one of the houses. (Before anyone has a go at me, Fantastic Beasts does focus on the houses too.) We have seen great characters come from all the houses. We have the heroes of Gryffindor, the hard workers from Hufflepuff, and the proud Slytherins. We also have the wit and wisdom of Ravenclaw. Having houses with these traits, allows us to easily self-insert ourselves into the world and form a deep connection to the stories.

One house though is, for the most part, left out. The lack of Ravenclaw main characters in the Wizarding World franchise has been repeatedly noticed again by fans. While we do have Luna Lovegood, Cho Chang, and Kingsley Shacklebolt (Though sources as of late are saying that his house is unknown.), Ravenclaws for the most part have been left out. This house does not have its moment in the spotlight. Like with Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw has been cast to the side while Slytherin and Gryffindor steal the spotlight. On the plus side, Hufflepuff has found its main character in Newt Scamander.

What about Ravenclaw though? Is Ravenclaw not deserving its own time in the spotlight?

Ravenclaw is known for being the smart house at Hogwarts. It is here that you will expect to find the highest academically performing students. While there are exceptions (Hermione Granger being the most notable), this is true. The Ravenclaws value intelligence and the ability to think outside the box. This is why to get into the Ravenclaw common room, you must solve a riddle as opposed to remembering a password. After all, you are not learning unless your mind is put to work. They are witty and creative as well. Again, this is all shown in how you must get into the Ravenclaw common room. Many of the riddles asked to get into the common room are not a simple answer but require you to be creative with your response and to have a clever sense of humour. This also makes the Ravenclaw common room safer than other places in the castle.

The fact that the common room does not rely on a password for someone to gain entrance, means that unwelcome intruders are kept out and the students are safer. Think back to the Harry Potter books, most notably Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and how easy it was to break into the Gryffindor common room. Not only that but whenever Ron and Harry drank Polyjuice Potion to spy on Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, they had no issue just walking into the Slytherin common room. This would not have happened had they been trying to get into the Ravenclaw common room. This use of a riddle not only keeps Ravenclaws learning but also gives them added protection.

On the flip side, all these traits can turn on Ravenclaws. This means that, unfortunately, Ravenclaws can come across as proud, stuck up, and arrogant. Meaning that they can be know-it-alls. Anymore who doesn’t measure up to them is beneath them. They can view the other houses as being lesser and, therefore, this can leave them isolated. This could be why we see very little of Ravenclaw in both the Fantastic Beasts movies and the Harry Potter world.

A Ravenclaw lead could bring more insight into the wizarding world than what we have already seen. For example, Ravenclaws are curious and this curiosity could allow us to see a different side of the wizarding world. We could be taken to places of which we have never heard. Plus, with a Ravenclaw lead taking us to new places and how these places are sources of magical power would make sense. This would be a benefit for the Fantastic Beasts series because a lot of the new bits of information that we are exposed to does not make sense. A Ravenclaw would have explained to those around them and the general audience why this place is important. Why would a Ravenclaw do this? It all comes back to Ravenclaws being curious. A Ravenclaw would take the time to research and learn everything there was to know about a place before going there. This research would eliminate a lot of plot holes. It would also prevent our characters from rushing into dangerous situations without fully knowing the situation and causing unnecessary suffering.

In intense situations, a Ravenclaw will also be of value. For example, in the Harry Potter World, there were many times that Luna Lovegood got the Gryffindors to slow down and look at the situation. While she is odd and different, she also sees things that others do not. Without her, Harry probably not have found Ravenclaw’s diadem and may not have ended up defeating Lord Voldemort.

While Ravenclaws may not lead the charge into a battle, this does not mean that their skills are not of value. First off, a Ravenclaw would not charge blindly into a situation. They would take the time to observe and take in all there is to see. Then, they would come up with a plan with the knowledge that they have. They would use a mix of logic, and what they know and see to come up with a solution. The solution may not be a typical book solution. It will fit the current situation. The downfall to doing this is that Ravenclaws could be too late to join in the action. However, they may be more likely than a Gryffindor to come out of danger alive.

Ravenclaws are also intuitive, which is another benefit. They can read situations. This means that they can, once again, see things that others cannot. They can look at a situation and pick up on things that others may have missed. This, again, makes them stand out from other houses. It is because of this that Ravenclaws have a deep understanding of not only how things work, but also how people work. For example, they know whenever someone needs company and when someone may need space. They know when something may seem off and are quickly able to pick up on that. This means that they can quickly think and get themselves out of dangerous situations. This is helpful when they find themselves in a duel. They will be able to quickly react to whatever nasty spell is thrown at them. Plus, their love for knowledge will also be helpful. They will more than likely have a deep understanding of spell work and will more than likely know what is being thrown at them before they a struck. This could end up saving not only their own lives but the lives of those around them.

Learning and intelligence are perhaps what Ravenclaw house is most known for. They take great pride and pleasure in being smart. Slytherin also displays this trait as well. Whereas Slytherin uses this trait for personal gain, Ravenclaw wants to learn for the sake of learning. They do not seek it out for personal means, but rather for the joy of learning something new. Again, this love of learning and having high intelligence could be very useful in a dangerous situation. It means that a Ravenclaw lead could have the bit of knowledge needed to solve different situations. They, if they feel like it, will use what they know to not only help themselves but those around them. The ability to use what they have learned, as well as their intelligence, would also be an advantage in dangerous situations. Using this, they would be able to come up with creative and clever responses to get them out of any dangerous situations.

New Medium Article: I Finally Read The Chalice of the Gods

Happy Saturday everyone! I just posted a new article on my Medium page. It's called "I Finally Read Percy Jackson and the and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods." Below is the link to the full article, as well as a sneak peek.

Link: https://alysonserenastone.medium.com/...

Sneak Peek:
Author’s Note: This article contains spoilers for the original five “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” books by Rick Riordan.

The Percy Jackson series, titled “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” is a captivating and popular young adult fantasy adventure written by Rick Riordan. The series consists of six books and follows the adventures of Percy Jackson, a teenage boy who discovers he is a demigod — a half-human, half-Greek god — and the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Throughout the series, Percy Jackson grows as a character, forging strong friendships with other demigods like Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood. Together, they face formidable enemies, unravel ancient mysteries, and confront their struggles. Rick Riordan’s blending of modern-day settings with Greek mythology creates a thrilling and engaging narrative that captivates readers of all ages. The series has been widely praised for its relatable characters, witty humour, and exploration of friendship, loyalty, and heroism. The success of the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series has led to several spin-off series and adaptations, cementing its place as one of the most beloved and enduring works in contemporary young adult literature

I recently reread “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” for the anticipated release of The Chalice of the Gods. I will admit that I did come out of my reread with mixed feelings. However, The Chalice of the Gods did not disappoint. It had what I thought the original books were missing. We have the charm, the quests, the humour, and the deep friendships. The bones of the original books are still there but are presented in a more grown-up manner. Rick Riordan has truly done an amazing job at aging the characters, while still managing to hold onto the core of the books.

Percy, Annabeth, and Grover thought their quest days were behind them. Annabeth and Percy are preparing to go to university, while Grover is living with the Elders. Percy is at home with his mom and stepdad, enjoying the family meals that he never got to experience as a child. He has the girl of his dreams and his parents love her. Plus, he has not managed to get kicked out of school. School is still rough, but he thinks it’s going okay. This all changes though when Percy is called into the guidance counsellor’s office. For him to get into New Rome University, he must have three letters of recommendation from the gods. He thinks that this is not going to be a problem. After all, he has done so much for them. He is informed that he must complete three quests to get the letters of recommendation.
