Main Character Monday: Interview with Kurt Hunter and Giveaway

Welcome to this Main Character Monday Interview with Kurt Hunter. Kurt is one of three leading characters from Show Me Skulduggery by Ellen E. Withers. Show Me Skulduggery is the third in her Show Me Mysteries series from Scrivenings Press and will release on May 13, 2025. Be sure to read all the way to the end to find out all about this new release and learn how you can enter the great giveaway Ellen is hosting.

Welcome Kurt. Why don’t we start with a little bit about yourself.

The best things in my life are my son, my girlfriend, and my Christian faith. I’m thirty years old and the father of an eight-year-old son, Ross. Currently, I’m raising Ross as a single dad.

Although I’m new to detective work, I enjoyed my time as a patrol officer. Because I was born and raised in this town, I have a special feel for the citizens and take my job as a protector seriously. My promotion to detective with the Mexico, Missouri Public Safety Department is exciting. My partner, Hector, is teaching me the ropes of detective work.

Liesl Schrader is the love of my life. I’m working to convince her to marry me, but it’s a slow process. Back in high school, I betrayed her with a one-night stand with Ross’s mother. Now I’m proving to Liesl that I am faithful and worthy of her love.

You sound like a very busy man. And best of luck with your proposal. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

In my role as a police detective, I’m doing God’s work to protect the innocent. But I also pray for rehabilitation and forgiveness for those guilty of crimes. My desire is for criminals to be given an opportunity to find their way to God’s love and grace while they’re incarcerated.

As much as I give Liesl a hard time about interfering with my work, she and her best friend Nicole have helped me investigate several murders. I’m grateful for their help, but don’t want them in any danger.

Wow. That really makes praying for your enemies come to life. I mean, I know they didn’t necessarily hurt you, but you see firsthand the damage caused by their actions. I wonder how many of us, in the same position, would think to pray for them. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

Ephesians 4:32 (KJV) “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

I broke Liesl’s heart when we were in high school. I resented my transgressions and begged for forgiveness from God and from her. This taught me to always offer forgiveness to others. People can transform themselves if given the chance to benefit from God’s blessings.

Is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?

Jonah was rebellious to God’s initial command. It took being swallowed by a large fish to cause him to repent and obey God. I was raised as a Christian by Christian parents, but I rebelled from this temporarily. My actions brought a beautiful boy into this world. His birth transformed me into a mature man who asked for forgiveness from God and the people I hurt during this time.

It’s wonderful how God works beauty through even those times when we’ve been rebellious. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

Love. Although I disappointed myself, God, my parents, and Liesl when I went wild years ago, my love for them never wavered. I will always take care of, and protect, those I love. This includes the citizens of my town. Protecting their safety as a law enforcement officer is my act of love for them.

Is there one that is more challenging than the others?

Patience. Just recently, Liesl tried to help me learn the social graces of formal tea. An important source in my investigation invited me to her home for tea, and I was clueless about such things. I thought what Liesl was showing me was silly. I got mad and stormed out of her house. She didn’t deserve to be treated like that, and I blame it all on my impatience. The joke was on me. I could have used Liesl’s lesson.

Well, it seems you may have learned it, even if it was the hard way. If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

Follow God’s laws and public laws. Drugs, drinking, and illegal behaviors are NOT the answers to your problems.

Before we find out more about Ellen and your book, I’ve got a few more questions for you. These are just for fun. No need to stress them. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

I’d like to visit Alaska with Ross and Liesl. I’ve heard so much about the mountains, glaciers, and wildlife there. It seems like it would be a perfect place for us to connect with God and his creations.

If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

I’d appreciate having the training and patience to counsel people to turn away from a life of crime. This is a goal I’m working toward in the future. When I retire from police work, I think I’d like to start, or assist with, a prison ministry.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? Dark Chocolate

Beach or Mountains? Mountains

Sweet Tea or Lemonade? Sweet Tea

And this last question is sometimes the most revealing. Using only three words, how would you describe Ellen E. Withers?

Sentimental, curious, blessed

Great answer. Thank you for being with us today Kurt. Readers, now it’s time to learn a bit more about Ellen E. Withers.

More About Show Me Skulduggery

Death comes knocking once again in Show Me Skullduggery, the captivating third book in the award-winning Show Me Mysteries series. These mysteries involve two eras, early 1900s, and contemporary times, featuring a famous Saddlebred horse stable in Mexico, Missouri. Intrigue, deception, underhanded behavior, and murder will keep you turning pages.

Present day: Because of her behavior, the disregard of the needs of her tenants, and her penny-pinching ways, everyone despises slumlord Katherine Mull. When a killer emerges and acts upon their desire to end Katherine’s life, Liesl, Kurt, and Nicole must race against time to identify the killer before this madman kills again. Can they track down the killer before someone else dies? Do they have the skills necessary to identify the killer before they become the target?

1920 through 1953: Mexico, Missouri is famous for being the “Saddlehorse Capital of the World” thanks to world-famous owner/trainers Tom Bass, C.F. Clark, Joseph Potts, George and William Lee, Robert Stewart, and Art Simmons. Each has built upon the solid, respected reputation of the previous trainer at these beloved stables until now. Who can discover and stop sabotage at the stables? Will the Saddlebred trainers be bankrupt if the breed’s sterling reputation is destroyed? Is murder the ultimate act of an evil man seeking revenge?

Home Baked Bribery Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Home Baked Bribery Review

About the Book

Book: Home Baked Bribery (Addie Masters Mysteries Book 2)

Author: Gina Holder

Genre: Christian Cozy Mystery

Release date: March 4, 2025

The annual Rockport bake sale and competition is underway. The stakes are higher than ever for the coveted Golden Whisk Award when a high-profile celebrity chef is brought in as a surprise guest judge.

The competition takes a deadly turn when the celebrity suffers an allergic reaction. When Addie’s nemesis, Kennedy Graves is banned from the competition for using almond extract, Addie volunteers to prove Kennedy innocent. As Addie investigates the death, she learns each of the local bakers had a motive to dislike the celebrity. But did one of them kill him?

Meanwhile, hundred-year-old twins, Poppy and Marigold, keep Addie hopping, looking for their missing dogs.

Will Addie be able to uncover the truth behind the celebrity judge’s death, or will she become the next victim of the mysterious shenanigans going on in Rockport?

My Home Baked Bribery Review

Home Baked Bribery is outside my list of preferred genres. I read just about everything but mystery and suspense most of the time. However, I love a book that involves baking, and I enjoyed those Hallmark mystery movies about the baker turned amateur sleuth. With that in mind, I was eager to read this one.

The story is everything you want a cozy mystery to be. It’s easy to follow, has a cast of enjoyable characters, throws in a pet (or six), and doesn’t raise your blood pressure with high levels of suspense or fear. Though the main character and amateur sleuth, Addie Masters, is not a baker, there is plenty of baking going on to tempt readers with a sweet-tooth. And I think Addie’s unusual profession is an even better choice for her mystery-solving than if she was a baker. The fact that she’s from a small-town and knows nearly every suspect in a personal way just raises the stakes for her to find out who the killer is. It raises them for the reader too as almost every one of them is likable. You don’t want it to be this one or that one.

I do want to mention there is a bit of backstory/telling in the beginning of the story. Because of this, it took me a little longer to really immerse myself in the story. However, it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book overall. The author sets readers up with not only a good cast of suspect but also a great victim.

Because she created such a detestable victim, there are plenty of suspects to choose from and a host of clues to follow. While I had certain elements figured out before the big reveal, there were still parts of the mystery that remained that way until Addie put it all together. If you’re a fan of the cozy mystery genre, or like me, a fan of baking stories, I think you’re going to enjoy this story.

I give Home Baked Bribery four stars.

You Write You

You Write You CoverYou Write You is now available!

I cannot believe I forgot to post this update on release day, which was Tuesday, April 22, 2025. You Write You has been a work of the heart for me in ways different from my other books. Instead of writing to readers, this book is meant to encourage Christian authors. So many Christian authors have encouraged and taught me in  my journey as an author, and it is a blessing to be able to, even in some small way, do the same for others.

About You Write You

When rules and tools designed to improve our writing and productivity don’t work for us, we wonder–is adequate all we can achieve? Did God provide what we need for success? Is writing the wrong path for us?

God designed us uniquely, from passions to personalities. We’re not cookie-cutter people. Why do we aspire to be cookie-cutter writers? And does clinging to individuality mean rules don’t apply?

With scripture as our base, You Write You provides insight into our God-given design. It encourages exploration of the heart of writing aids and teaches us how to combine both elements. Together, we will discover how honoring the heart brings freedom to write as God created us to write.

What Others Are Saying

You Write You gives authors permission to write according to the way God made them but also encourages accountability… More than just another book on the craft of writing, Greer encourages authors in their faith walk as well. – Goodreads Review

If you’re beginning your journey as a writer, or you’re stuck somewhere along the way because of the “rules” for producing a publishable novel appear insurmountable, or even if you’re a published author, this how-to book from author Heather Greer may be for you. Heather encourages you to know who you are and to find what works best for you as a writer. – Goodreads Review

So many people say “I want to write a book, but I don’t know where to start.” Here is the answer. This book helps you wade through all of the advice, the techniques, the “rules” that bombard from every side… I will refer to this each time I start a new project. – Goodreads Review

Main Character Monday: Interview with Clarence (Ren) Lyman

Main Character Interview with Ren LymanWelcome to today’s Main Character Monday and my interview with Clarence (Ren) Lyman. I’ve already checked with our guest, and he’s fine with me calling him Ren from here on out. Ren is from A Slight Change of Plans by Denise M. Colby. A Slight Change of Plans is the second in her Best-laid Plans series published by Scrivenings Press. I’ll give you the link to find out more about this book at the end of the interview.

For now, let’s dive in with Ren Lyman. Welcome, Ren. I like my readers to get to know a bit about my guests before we tackle other questions. Can you share a little about yourself?

There’s not much to tell. I don’t really like talking much. Except to God. I’m more a do’er.

Though it might make interviewing a little difficult, I can appreciate that. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

When I left home, my mom handed me a list of Bible verses on a piece of paper to refer to. I carry it in my pocket everywhere I go.

I love that! A small gift in worldly terms, but the greatest gift we could have. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

I have to pick just one? (Groan) Each day is different. But one that I have repeated often to myself would be Joshua 1:9 – For the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

That is a wonderful reminder. You have an ever-changing verse favorite, but is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?

When I was a child, I couldn’t play outside during breaks, so I would read the stories in the Bible. I wanted to be strong and fearless like David.

He’s a good one to be like for many reasons. I’d love to know why you couldn’t play outside, but I have a list of questions to get through before we’re done. So, I’ll have to wait for your book to satisfy my curiosity. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

Patience and self-control. You have to have both when you’re a blacksmith. It takes time to mold and form metal into the shapes required. Strength to pound out the imperfections so the workmanship will hold.

Wow. Sometimes I feel like that is a picture of us. God allowing life to pound out the imperfections so His shape will hold in us. Is there one that is more challenging than the others?

All of them. But first. Patience and self-control. I wanted to be a blacksmith more than anything. Like my father and my brothers. But my right hand couldn’t hold the tools right. I had to learn how to do it with my left-hand. Which was weaker. I had to have patience and self-control with myself to get stronger and learn new ways to hold things so I could stay in the forge. Of course many townsfolk didn’t approve of me using my left-hand. I had to hide what I did. They weren’t kind to me or my family. I had to dig deep to find any of the ones you mentioned. It’s not easy living the fruit of the spirit when the people around you don’t embrace those things. And I did. Once God led me to Washton.

Now I’m really interested in your story. It sounds like you’ve experienced a lot. If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

Do not worry about tomorrow. Focus on today. Worry steals your joy. And joy isn’t about happiness. It’s about finding a peace within even when there is chaos all around you.

I’m glad you clarified. So many, even today, maybe even more today, confuse joy and happiness. Now I’d like to have some fun. These next questions aren’t deep, just answer however strikes first. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

Oh, I don’t know. I’m pretty content staying here in Washton. With the trains now, I feel like I could go anywhere. I’d love to visit my family. See them in person.

If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

A way with babies. I’m big and brawny. And my hands are messed up from working in the forge. I don’t feel like I’m very gentle. But I want to be.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? I have never heard of dark or milk chocolate. Isn’t chocolate just chocolate?

Beach or Mountains? I’ve never seen the beach, but I do love looking at the hills around us. It keeps my eyes looking up.

Sweet Tea or Lemonade? I have to choose one? My mom made a delicious sweet tea. But lemonade reminds me of Jenny.

One final question. If you could describe Denise M. Colby, the woman who brought your story to life, in only three words, how would you do it?

Persistent. Faithful. Chatterbox.

Thank you so much for this interview Ren. I appreciate you giving me and my readers a few of your words today. You may not love talking, but you have some great things to say.

Readers, stick with me because I’m going to introduce you to Denise M. Colby and tell you how you can connect with her.

Meow Meow Milks the Cow Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit

Meow Meow Milks the Cow Review

About the Book

Book: Meow Meow Milks the Cow: A Towers of Light Read to Me

Author: Allen Brokken, Illustrated by Reace Erbe

Genre: Christian Fable

Release date: March 15, 2025

When disaster strikes the family farm, Lauren gets a big job.  She has to milk their cow, Clarabelle, all by herself!  Her only help might come from her new feline friend Meow Meow, but how can such a little kitten help with such a big job?

This read-aloud will help you share the timeless truth from the Bible that God can use the least of us to solve big problems.

Click here to get your copy!My Meow Meow Milks the Cow Review

I love children’s books. Those that are entertaining, beautiful, and also include a great message are a special gift. I loved the premise of Meow Meow Milks the Cow. And knowing how much my toddler granddaughter loves all animals I jumped at the chance to read and review this book. The cover is cute, and I believe will capture a small child’s attention with the little kitten and a friendly looking cow on it. The illustrations are well done and capture the feel of the story perfectly. The message of the story is a great one for young children. To know that God values them and can use them even though they might be small is a powerful idea, and it is a truth this story presents in a clear and entertaining way.

The only element of the story I have any doubts about is some of the word choices. There is quite a bit of text and fairly complex wording included on each page. For an adult, this doesn’t pose a problem, but it does keep the story from capturing that lyrical quality so many children’s books employ. And it may keep children from fully grasping the story without explanation. However, as this is meant as a read aloud story, this element can be overlooked to an extent.

I give Meow Meow Milks the Cow three and a half stars.

About the Author

Allen Brokken is a teacher at heart, a husband and father most of all. He’s a joyful writer by the abundant grace of God. He began writing the Towers of Light series for his own children to help him illustrate the deep truths of the Bible in an engaging and age appropriate way. He’s dedicated 15 years of his life to volunteer roles in children’s ministry and youth development. Now that his own children are off to college he’s telling stories and sharing clean humor on social media and through his blog.

More from Allen

Sometimes, a story just HAS to be told.  When I first wrote the book that became Light of Mine, book 1 of the Towers of Light series, there was a scene in which the main character, Lauren, and her newly found kitten are trying to milk the cow.  It was a sweet moment in a chaotic story, and I had fun writing it as an homage to my kitten squeaker, who made trying to work around home very challenging at times.  However, my editor was pretty clear that as cute as the story was, Meow Meow’s interlude with the milk cow Clarabelle just didn’t fit the story’s action.  So, unfortunately, that scene found its way to the cutting room floor.

After a few years, I started having mothers of children who loved the Towers of Light Series ask the same question over and over….”But what about my littles?”  Do you have a story for me to read to my younger children?  After thinking about it, I realized Meow Meow’s adventure might be a perfect read-aloud.  So I reached out to a fellow Realm Maker, Pam Halter, who has a really fun series of books with Willougby the Dragon, to see if she could help me turn my 2500-word novel scene into an 800-word picture book…and she did a fantastic job! So now we have Meow Meow Milks the Cow.

Another fun fact is that the character Ethan in this book is all grown up now and engaged to be married to Reace Erbe, and this is her first illustrated work in print.  So we all hope you enjoy this Tower of Light read to me.

Meet the Author Monday: Interview with Lynn U. Watson

Meet the Author Monday: Interview with Lynn U. WatsonWelcome to this week’s Meet the Author Monday interview with Lynn U. Watson. Lynn’s first book, Tangled Promises, released in 2024. The sequel, Frayed Promises, just released this month. I had the opportunity to get to know Lynn at a writing retreat when my publisher asked me if I’d be willing to share a room with someone. (I’m a room to myself kind of girl.) We got along well, and we’ve staying in touch since then. Now, it is my pleasure to share my interview with Lynn U. Watson with you and let you get to know her better too. Lynn, start us off by telling us a little about yourself.

I’ve worn so many hats over the decades. This bio I’ve included in the book and begun to share on my social media profiles sums it all up pretty well.

Award-winning author, Lynn U. Watson is the great-great-granddaughter of a baron from Southwest Germany. From stories whispered down generations to the vibrant threads of her own life, Lynn’s journey is a testament to creativity and compassion. Nurtured by her grandmother’s love of needlework, Lynn built a thriving custom clothing business, and with her husband, Steve, they created The Lynn’n Butterfly Collection (cross-stitch designs). In 2007, Lynn became a certified reflexologist, opening Footsteps in Eden, a haven where she uses touch therapy and prayer to relax her clients. She combines her passions and heritage Stepping through Time Stitching Stories of Faith. Lynn, Steve, and their feline overlord, Jasmine, call Bartlett, Tennessee home.

Do you give readers glimpses of yourself in the books you write? If so, please give examples.

I asked a dear friend who’s also one of my biggest encouragers, if she saw me in my books. She answered in part, “Shadows of you dancing in the candlelight. (I made that up just now, but you can totally use it, and I won’t even charge you.)”

She meant that in jest, of course. Clara and Daniel enjoyed dancing as a couple. My husband, aka my would-be dance partner, is allergic to the dance floor, but I have enjoyed participating in worship dance, which can be done in candlelight.

Clara’s passion for encouraging other women and leading them in Bible classes aligns with my heart. I have written devotionals (some published) and Bible Studies and had roles in women’s ministries most of my adult life.

Sewing and needlework of every kind have long been favorite creative outlets of mine. To write Rosa, Megs, and Clara as women gifted with needle and thread was a quite natural flow. I’ve done couture sewing for the public. My husband and I designed and published counted-cross stich designs in the 1980’s when this was popular. Signing up for my newsletter, readers receive one of those designs which I adapted to include the tagline for Frayed Promises: God gives impossibilities beautiful endings.

The story ideas for both Tangled Promises and Frayed Promises was sparked by my Great-grandmother’s story. Being the daughter of a German Baron and pregnant by the carriage driver must have created huge challenges in her life. Beyond the snippet or two I know, I’ve wondered what her life-journey was like. Her father did send her to America – a single pregnant woman. Women have always known how to make “the inconvenience” go away. I’m very grateful she chose life for her baby, my grandmother in spite of what the decision would have cost her. I’m an advocate for life and a supporter/volunteer of Life Choices of Memphis, Inc. Frayed Promises is dedicated to their staff and volunteers who help women make life-affirming decisions every day. A portion of my royalties benefits this ministry.

I remember you sharing the idea for your first book when we shared that room back in 2019. It was an intriguing idea, and I love that it ties in with your family. I know in addition to writing a great story, you love to read a great story. What was your favorite book you read last year and why?

What a tough question to answer! I read over 60 books last year, and loved so many of them. The Italian Ballerina by Kristy Cambron stands out, because the story touched my heart and brought me to tears. I experience intense emotions when reading many stories, but rarely does one cause my eyes to leak like this one did.

Those are the best, aren’t they? Do you have a scripture that guides or inspires you in your writing life?

Many years ago, I read Matthew 5:11-12 from The Message version of the Bible. Its colorful descriptions grabbed my attention. These verses motivate me to share His light. He’s given me a gifting with the written word, and I pray I use it well to shine an example for others to follow and bringing glory to God.

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”

That is a very vibrant way to word it. I like that. It catches the attention. What about your books? What can readers expect when open up one of your stories?

Expect romance and mystery, in clean faith-filled stories. Characters face formidable challenges and societal pressures with courage—putting their hope and trust in God amidst their struggles.

You write fiction, but what is the last nonfiction book (Bible not included) that you’ve read?

As someone who loves sewing and needlework of all kinds, it was a special privilege to be on the launch team for Naomi Fata’s, Stitching Your Story Piece by Peace. I love how she uses her experiences in real life and in her professional sewing world to mend hearts and encourage her readers to find the peace of God.

I love books that tie my spiritual life into other pursuits I enjoy. Let’s pretend a moment. You’ve reserved a table for three at a cute little coffee shop. You take one spot. Which authors, dead or alive, fill the remaining two spots?

Johanna Spyri. I fell in love with her book, Heidi, as a child. I owned a copy of the book and often reread it. It was a newly released book during the setting of Tangled Promises, and I featured it in that first volume of the Promised Destiny Series.

Ann H. Gabhart. Ann is a newly-discovered favorite author of mine. Comp authors whose themes and stories are similar to mine have been very difficult for me to determine. When I read In the Shadow of the River, I knew I had finally found a kindred author.

I have to admit, I’ve never read Heidi. But I do love an Ann H. Gabhart. Her covers are gorgeous too. Each author’s process is different. Would you rather have to hand-write all your manuscripts or speak them into a recorder?

I’ve heard that speaking your words into a recorder is the key to writing fast. My brain needs to see what’s going on that page in real time. On the other hand, when ideas are coming fast, my handwriting would probably disintegrate into something akin to scribble designs. If faced with this decision, I would probably write them out.

Thank you for being a guest on Meet the Author Monday. I always enjoy getting to know more about the writing of the author’s I meet. Readers, I hope you’ve enjoyed this interview with Lynn U. Watson. Wurttemberg, Germany, 1881

“I’ll keep your secret. But, Clara.” Oma looked her granddaughter in the eye. “Choices carry consequences.”

Clara and Daniel–the Baron’s daughter and the family carriage driver, followed their hearts and married secretly circumventing nobility’s rules. They conduct their lives separately while sneaking every opportunity to be together. When Clara is forced to reveal her marriage, can she also hide the life growing inside her, and what punishment awaits from her father?

If Vati sends her away, Daniel promises to follow. But unexpected family troubles bring them face-to-face with the words of Proverbs 16:9. A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.

Her grandmother’s last warning spins like a tempest threatening to shipwreck their joy and fray every promise they have made.

Will they trust that God gives impossibilities beautiful endings?

If you enjoy stories of faith in the face of society’s pressures and trusting God in times of struggle, you’ll love this closed-door romance that will keep you guessing until the end. For readers of Tracie Peterson and Ann H. Gabhart.

Main Character Monday Interview with Henry Mullins

Main Character Monday interview with Henry MullinsWelcome to this week’s Main Character Monday Interview with Henry Mullins. Henry comes to us from A Homecoming in Shady Springs, the second in the Shady Springs series by Sarah Anne Crouch. A Homecoming in Shady Springs is a March 2025 release from Scrivenings Press. I’ll share more about the book and its author after today’s interview. First, let’s meet Henry Mills. Henry, take a moment and tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a college freshman at Halloway University, but I grew up three hours away in Shady Springs, Arkansas. It’s my first time being this far away from home, so I’m pretty nervous.

That first time away from home can be a little nerve-racking. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I never learned how to ride a bike. It doesn’t actually come up as much as you’d think, so it hasn’t really held me back, but people are always surprised when I tell them.

I learned as a child, but it is a skill I’ve not really used as an adult. So, I’m pretty sure you’re right that you life hasn’t been negatively impacted by the lack. If you could solve one world problem, which one would you solve?

No more wars. Looking at pictures in the newspaper is sobering and makes me feel so sad and helpless.

I think a lot of us probably feel the same way. The New Testament tells of Mary and Martha. Two sisters who react to a visit from Jesus in very different ways. Mary chooses to spend time with Him, while Martha chooses to take care of the physical needs. Are you more Mary or Martha?

Mary. I’m not as good at remembering to help out with chores. But wouldn’t that be so cool to get a visit from Jesus?

I can only imagine how that must have felt for Mary and Martha or the rest of the people of Jesus’s time. ”Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 – Do you think living out this verse would make a difference in your life? How?

All the widows I know from church back home are wonderful ladies. They always have a lot of wisdom to share. Spending more time with them would help anyone be a better person.

I love that take on the question. I agree. There is often a lot of wisdom there we overlook in our youth or busy-ness or distractions. Is there a verse of scripture that holds great meaning in your life?

I love John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.“

I’ve been told it’s a little cliché, but it was the first Bible verse I memorized when I started going to church, and it packs a real punch.

There’s nothing wrong with one of the most well-known verses being a favorite, especially if it still carries that weight for you. With the great truth in it, we could all stand for it to be a little weightier in our lives. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

God loves you no matter what you’ve done. That unconditional love hits me every time I think about it—I think I’m still getting used to it after being a Christian for a few years now.

Great message, and it does fit nicely with your favorite verse. Now, before we get to more about Sarah and your story, I’d like to ask some just for fun questions. Nothing hard. Just quick answers that give us a peek into Henry Mullins. If you could buy one thing, without worrying about the cost, what would you buy?

A really nice camera. I always had to steal—I mean, borrow—one from the school yearbook or newspaper in high school.

That begs another question, but I said quick and easy. So, we will have to table that inquiry for another day What one hobby would you keep if you had to give up all other hobbies?

Photography (although I think that might be obvious now, haha)

Apples or Pears? Pears (We used to eat them from a can growing up, and I always loved them.)

Indoors or Outside? Outside

Reading or Writing? Reading

And our final question. Using only three words, can you describe Sarah Anne Crouch?

Messy but blessed

I have to say, your answer made me smile. I can relate to those words more than I want to. (At least the messy part. Who doesn’t want to feel blessed?) Thank you, Henry, for joining us today.

Readers, before we end this Main Character Monday interview with Henry Mullins, let’s take a minute to meet the author, Sarah Anne Crouch.

Now and Then and Always Review: First Line Friday

Now and Then and Always review for First Line Friday

Now and Then and Always Details:

Welcome to my Now and Then and Always Review on this First Line Friday. I apologize that I’m running late getting this one posted today, but I hope you forgive me and stick around. This one is SO good. But before we go there, here are the details. While not a breezy book, I read this one in a day. It kept me turning pages that well. The book was written by Melissa Tagg and published by Larkspur Press. Now and Then and Always is the first in a series and comes in at 352 pages. This book was a 2020 Christy Award winner.

First Line:

“It was just a house.”

Okay, that’s technically the first line of the prologue, but that still counts as the first line. And what a house it was. But we’ll get to that in just a minute. Don’t let the simplicity of this first line stop you. You should read this book.

Now and Then and Always Review:

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book by Melissa Tagg before, but this one’s cover was so inviting and intriguing all at the same time. I did judge this book by its cover, and I’m glad I did. The story inside is even more beautiful than the cover would suggest.

First, this “just a house” is considerably more than “just”. A Victorian house in need of some TLC. Even in the description of the B&B’s run down state, I could picture its potential and its innate beauty. And as the story progresses, the house becomes as much a character as any human on the page. Seriously, this story would not be close to what it is if the house was some generic one level ranch with a detached garage. This house is  worthy of the stories it contains.

Second, this house isn’t the only great character. The main characters are all seeking, hurting, questioning, and struggling through things in life that give their existence on the page reason and depth. They’re likable and believable. Even the mysterious house owner who has disappeared from her small town without a trace is well-rounded enough to keep us invested in her part of the story.

That brings me to the small town dynamics. I love a good small town story, and this one is no exception. That feeling of community and family is even more potent considering the struggles felt by the two main characters to connect and belong. And the romance is written at just the right amount to produce all the feels without overwhelming the rest of the story and making some very important plot points feel unnecessary. It is perfectly balanced.

Considering I bought and finished the sequel immediately after reading this one, I can safely say you won’t be disappointed with Now and Then and Always. I give it a solid five stars. It may be the best book I’ve read so far in 2025.

Main Character Monday: Interview with O.D. Billings

O.D. Billings Main Character Monday InterviewWelcome to another Main Character Monday and my interview with O.D. Billings. O.D. is from Hope Takes the Reins by Jenny Carlisle. Hope Takes the Reins is book one in the Crossroads series published by Scrivenings Press.  Let’s welcome O.D. Billings to Main Character Monday. O.D. why don’t we start with you telling us a bit about yourself.

I’m the second of three boys in our family. My dad owns a pretty successful car/truck dealership in Crossroads, Arkansas. I work full time as a delivery truck driver, but I’d rather be riding my horse in tie-down (calf roping) competitions at our local rodeo.

Wow. Well, I guess you probably need one to pay the bills and one for the love of it. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

The only sport I’ve ever been good at is rodeo. My brothers did all the things, football, baseball, wrestling. I just didn’t get into those things. Also didn’t care much for bull-riding like my little brother. Far too dangerous.

Focus on one thing you love isn’t a bad thing. And I’m with you. Bull riding is dangerous, but those riders seem to love it. If you could solve one world problem, which one would you solve?

Making sure everyone has a family that loves them. I’ve been so blessed as far as this goes.  Nothing is sadder than hearing about a teenager who has run away or been a victim of trafficking.

It’s great you recognize the blessing of your family. The New Testament tells of Mary and Martha. Two sisters who react to a visit from Jesus in very different ways. Mary chooses to spend time with Him, while Martha chooses to take care of the physical needs. Are you more Mary or Martha?

Funny you should bring up this story. I probably remember David and Goliath, Jonah and the Whale, but didn’t give much thought to Mary and Martha since they are girls. But, my mom told me once I was too much like Martha. She said I should stop trying to fix everyone and everything and just enjoy life a little bit. I read up on it, and she was probably right. My little brother, Cody is more of a Mary, and my older brother John K. is like their brother Lazurus, the hero who came back from the dead.

Sounds like your whole family is covered. ”Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 – Do you think living out this verse would make a difference in your life? How?

I guess this is how I always live. Trying to do what’s right. I may not always be successful at staying unspotted, though. I do enjoy the attention I get when I win a tie-down competition, and it might be easy to be tempted a little bit by the glitz and glamour. We have a new casino in town, and I confess the bright lights and big talk of the owner are kind of attractive.

Is there a verse of scripture that holds great meaning in your life?

You know, I haven’t paid attention enough at church, even though Mom made sure we all wore a clean shirt, polished our boots and showed up each Sunday. These days, though, the one that rings in my head is when God says “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” I just Googled it, and found it is actually in the Bible twice. Deuteronomy 31:6-8 and also Hebrews 13: 5-6. That encourages me. I think I’m still a work and progress, and I hope God continues to have patience with me.

I am sure He will. God has to have patience with us considering how often we mess things up. Now, we’re going to move on to some fun questions. No pressure, just your quick and honest answers. If you could buy one thing, without worrying about the cost, what would you buy?

A vintage truck like my older brother has. I’d soup mine up so that it would win if we ever raced our trucks.

What one hobby would you keep if you had to give up all other hobbies?

Definitely riding. That seems more like part of my life than a hobby. I might never go pro with tie-down, but I couldn’t get along without my horse, Buck. A side note: the girl I’m interested in, Hope Caldwell, feels the same about horses, so that’s a good thing.

Apples or Pears? Apples. Pears are often too mushy.

Indoors or Outside? Outside. That’s why I like driving a delivery truck.

Reading or Writing? Neither? If I have to pick, I guess I’d pick reading. I’m starting to enjoy searching the scriptures for inspiration.

And one final question to give our readers insight into Jenny Carlisle, the woman who gave you your story. If you described Jenny in three words, what would they be?

From what I can tell about Ms. Jenny, she seems compassionate, insightful, and helpful.

Those are some great descriptions. Thank you for being with us today. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you a bit more. For now, we’re going to let readers get to know Jenny Carlisle and then tell them a bit more about your story, Hope Takes the Reins.

More About Hope Takes the Rein

O.D. Billings has lived in the shadow of his brothers all his life. Even his name brings him down, so he has used only initials for years. Now, his older brother has returned home from the army, rejecting the role his family expects him to assume in their pickup truck dealership, and the younger brother is intent on risking his life on the back of a bucking bull. O.D.’s fans at the rodeo love his confident swagger during tie-down roping competitions, but every trail he heads down on his own seems to wind up going nowhere.

Hope Caldwell’s world is still reeling after her mom’s recent death from cancer. She thrives on keeping the family’s rodeo business going. Getting back to normal seems impossible when she overhears her uncle’s plans to sell out. How can she continue without the only way of life she has known for all of her nineteen years? Can she rely on the help of a big-talking cowboy?  Or does he have too many problems of his own?

My Ephesians: Experience God’s Power Review

Because I love the book of Ephesians, this study appealed to me. I’ve used everything from devotionals to lighter studies to in-depth studies with very involved daily study times. While this study was not as all-encompassing or time consuming as those, it is a thorough study of the major themes of each chapter (and sometimes sections of a chapter) of Ephesians. Even those who are not accustomed to studying scripture will find this study easy to use and helpful for encouraging spiritual understanding and growth. And they format is perfect for small group study with questions that will prompt discussion and participation.

One of my favorite elements of this study is the inclusion of Old Testament references that highlight the themes discussed in the New Testament. Too often I’ve heard the Old Testament is good for stories and history but isn’t applicable in our lives today. We have the New Testament to teach us everything we need. But we lose the fullness of God’s plan and His character when we adopt that attitude. I love that the author ties everything the reader learns from the New Testament to Old Testament passages.

The layout of each reading is inviting as well. The author eases the reader into each session with an object lesson of sorts. Each one has a little picture of something from life that relates or explains the focus of the session. After reading the passage for the session, the reader is guided through questions designed to make them work through the overall theme of the reading. These questions are not complex, but they do encourage the reader to sort out what the passage means rather than simply reading it and moving on. The Old Testament passages come after that and the author does a great job tying the two together before moving on to application. I’m a big fan of studies that help people take the scripture lesson and make it personal to their lives. When we stop at reading and understanding the scripture, we reduce all God has for us to facts and figures to know. It’s allowing those truths to penetrate our hearts and change the way we live that frees the power of scripture and our relationship with God to change our lives. And this author did a good job of setting up each reading to move us from knowledge to living it.

About the Author

More from Sarah

Years ago, I was travelling a bit before starting a new teaching job. I found myself thinking that it would be neat to visit a few places of the Bible and soon made plans and set off for Turkey. One of my stops was Ephesus; the thought that I was walking in the same place as Paul and his disciples was pretty amazing. I saw the library (now open-air) and the place where the temple of Diana had been.

Having visited and then reflected on the visit while studying the Bible, I realized that the ruins of the port town of Ephesus were a living monument to the difficult living conditions of the believers in Paul’s time. There was much remaining of the Ephesian pagan world, of a time when Christians were a fledgling group that needed the encouragement that Paul offered.

Still today, looking around me it is easy to think that we are still a fledgling group of Christians that need Paul’s encouragement. Division and favoritism are still prevalent today and we are surrounded by nonbelievers. But Paul offered words of wisdom that are still relevant to us today.

You may not visit Turkey soon, but you can connect with the people of the land through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. We can walk a mile in their shoes as we study the encouragement of Paul and experience the power of Christ in our own lives.
