Interview with Sophia Johnson: Main Character Monday

Welcome to my interview with Sophia Johnson on this Main Character Monday. Sophia is visiting from her book, Sofia’s Beauty by Brenda Gates. This book is the second in Brenda’s Cries From the Earth series. Stay tuned after the interview for more information on the story and a link to purchase your copy.
Let’s welcome Sophia Johnson to Main Character Monday. Sophia, why don’t you start by telling us a little about yourself.
I had it all, but it wasn’t until I lost everything, that I really had what mattered. I was a model for a big name magazine and so successful that the owner married me! That brought me wealth, which was super important. After growing up in the slums, I swore I would never be poor again. My biggest accomplishment, however, was having our twins. Those girls—wow. They are my world. But success isn’t always what it seems. My husband became abusive, but I stuck with him because I was afraid of losing my girls and ending up on the streets again. While planning my revenge, God ripped me through time and there I was—no career, no money, no kids. It was awful—and it got worse. I won’t say what happened, you’ll have to read the book to find out. Let’s just say, it took me losing everything for God to get my attention.
Wow! What a life you’ve lived. I can’t imagine being ripped away from my children. Though everything you’ve shared is probably a bit surprising to readers, can you tell me something about you that readers may find surprising? A little tidbit or quirk?
I used to be deathly scared of dogs. Growing up, the only dogs in my neighborhood were mean guard dogs.
Dogs do make a lot of people nervous. You’ve faced quite a bit in your life. You’ve seen a lot of the good and the bad. If you could solve one world problem, which one would you solve?
Child abuse. Children are the biggest blessing God gives us, and need to be protected.
I agree wholeheartedly. Speaking of making change, the New Testament tells of Mary and Martha. Two sisters who react to a visit from Jesus in very different ways. Mary chooses to spend time with Him, while Martha chooses to take care of the physical needs. Are you more Mary or Martha?
Definitely Martha.
”Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 – Do you think living out this verse would make a difference in your life? How?
Yes! Oh, my word. I’ve been there, you know? I didn’t know what life was till I started stepping out and helping people. Of course, it caused trouble sometimes, too. Helping can cause big trouble. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.
Helping causes trouble. Hmm. I think there is probably a very interesting story to explain that. Maybe even more than one. We’ve talked a little about scripture, but is there a verse of scripture that holds great meaning in your life?
There are so many. But one chapter will always be my favorite. You see, fear drove me to do some things I thought God could never forgive me for, and this chapter, John 8, is so powerful to me. That’s the one where they bring the woman found in adultery to Jesus and want to stone her. I still get chills when I read verses 10 and 11: “…he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” I think that story finally convinced me that God could redeem me after all.
Isn’t wonderful how our God can lead us to the verses that are going to impact our lives most clearly? I love that. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?
God wants to redeem you so badly He is willing to move mountains (in my case, time) to accomplish that. No one is beyond His ability to forgive and to save. Believe me. I know.
Powerful message. One I hope readers take to heart. Before I let you go for the day, I’d like to ask you some just for fun questions. Nothing deep or hard. Just quick, honest answers.
If you could buy one thing, without worrying about the cost, what would you buy?
Ghirardelli Chocolate. Even more than instant hot showers, I miss good chocolate.
That’s definitely something I would miss too. What one hobby would you keep if you had to give up all other hobbies?
Sewing. Ok, I may not be wealthy any more, but there’s no reason for me not to have pretty clothes!
Apples or Pears?
Apples
Indoors or Outside?
Outside
Reading or Writing?
Reading.
Finally, I want to know about the woman who penned your story, Brenda Gates. Can you, using only three words, describe her for us?
A little concerning. (After all, how can someone who claims to love God and love people, come up with all the crazy things that happen to me in this story? Don’t you find that worrisome?)
Having read your story, I can see your point. I’d like to say, it’s the author’s job, but is that just an excuse? I’ll let you and the readers decide. Thank you, Sophia, for being here today. And thank you, Brenda Gates for letting us have this interview with Sophia Johnson for today’s Main Character Monday.
Readers, keep reading to find out more about Brenda Gates and Sophia’s Beauty.
More About BrendaEver since being the proverbial knee-high to a grasshopper, Brenda loved spinning tales. Married in college, Brenda Gates worked as a nurse, then was able to stay home to raise and homeschool their four children–a perfect occupation for a storyteller. Every bit of history learned, every place touched by people and time, has a story begging to be told. Now a proud grandma, Brenda lives with her husband, who just retired and keeps thinking of ways to keep them both busy. They are enjoying life on the lake and finally having all the kids and grandkids within easy reach.
Fear kept modern, success-driven model, Sofia, trapped in an abusive marriage—fear of poverty, of losing her children, of being alone. When she’s mysteriously transported to 1850s America, all her fears become reality—penniless, childless, and forced to survive on her own.
With nothing left to lose, Sofia discovers a courage she never knew she possessed. Working alongside Dr. Thomas Easton, she learns that true strength doesn’t come from wealth or status—it comes from faith, courage, and the love of a God who sees her true value.
But when her past threatens to destroy her newfound peace, Sofia faces an impossible choice: embrace forgiveness, or let revenge consume what’s left of her heart.
Will she find her true identity in Christ and accept the second chance He offers?
Time travel, romance, and faith are combined in this inspiring story of survival, new beginnings, divine grace, and the transformative power of God’s unfailing love.

Interview with Lucy Grayson: Main Character Monday

Welcome to my interview with Lucy Grayson on this Main Character Monday. Lucy is one of the main characters from Penny Frost McGinnis’s book, Home at Last. Home at Last is published by Mt. Zion Ridge Press and is available as an eBook, audiobook, and paperback. When you finish reading this interview with Lucy Grayson, please keep reading to find out more about the book and where you can purchase a copy.
Now, let’s begin this interview. Lucy, welcome to Main Character Monday. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Thanks so much for having me on your blog. I’m Lucy. My friends would describe me as a little crazy, a bit clumsy, and a lot nosey. I grew up on Abbott Island, Ohio with my parents and my brother, Joel. At fifteen, my friend, Sadie, my brother, and I started working at the General Store. I fell in love with the job and thanks to my gram, bought the place when I turned twenty-four. I guess you think I’m a workaholic. You may be right. I’m almost thirty now and I’m feeling the burn out of working long hours and balancing the issues and challenges of running a store on an island. Plus, I have no love life. Perhaps, I should find a new job or create a dating profile-Funny lady who loves baseball, chocolate, and working her fingers to the bone. Ha! We’ll see. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the island life and my sweet, brand-new niece. She’s a cutie. If you’d like to visit me on the island, check out my story in Home at Last. There’s even a treasure hunt. Sounds fun, right?
I’d love to get to know you more, and I’m sure my readers would to. And I’d love to visit the island. You’ve already told us a lot about yourself, but can you tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?
Something surprising. Hm… My fish, Finnegan, Finn for short, and I live in a tiny house. Good thing he doesn’t take up much room. I love my little space. It’s brand new, and I’m trying to get the yard in shape with the help of a guy on the island. Bonus: he’s pretty cute. The guy, that is.
Cute guys are always a plus, especially if they’re helpful. I love that you’ve got a fish named Finn. Fish can be great pets. Let’s shift gears for a bit. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
I love Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight,” taped to my desk. It’s my daily prayer. I’m kind of goofy and I love to have fun, but I also depend on Jesus to get me through the days.
Relying on Jesus is something we all need to do. We’ve got your favorite verse, but is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?
I love to read about women like Lydia, who had her own business selling purple cloth. She also led her household to Jesus. I strive to be better at sharing my faith, even when I’m so busy.
Speaking of sharing your faith, we can often do this by example through the fruit of the spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?
Self-control tests my patience. Oops, I guess I named two I struggle with one answer. Anyway, I aim to pour kindness and love over the people God puts in my path. Some days are easier than others.
I can relate to the self-control thing. And I get how some days are easier than others even for the fruit that comes easier most of the time. Now, you’ve kind of answered this already but Is there one that is more challenging than the others?
Patience for sure. My nosiness gets me into trouble, and I’m terrible at waiting. Lack of patience pours into my not-so-great self-control. I blurt out what I’m thinking and yikes, that can be a problem.
My husband has accused me of that many times! Now that we’ve learned a little bit about you and the life you lead, can you give us one message for those reading this interview?
If I can only share one message, it’s that Jesus never fails. He’s the same every day and I can depend on him when people let me down and when I let myself down. The other is to hold tight to family and love others. Those two have gotten me through a lot of tough spots.
Before I let you do, let’s do some rapid-fire questions. Just for fun. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?
I haven’t traveled much, but I’d love to visit as many baseball parks as I could. Of course I’ve been to the Cleveland Guardians Progressive Field. Next on my list is Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?
I think I’d like to play the guitar. I’ve never been good at sitting still, so I’d challenge myself to sit and play.
Dark or Milk Chocolate?
Dark
Beach or Mountains?
Beach-I live on an island!
Sweet Tea or Lemonade?
I love both!
One last question, using only three words can you describe Penny Frost McGinnis?

Review of Written on the Mist: First Line Friday

Welcome to my review of Written on the Mist for this week’s First Line Friday. Written on the Mist is written by Naomi Rawlings and is the first in a series. With 420 pages this historical Christian fiction book is long, but it doesn’t read that way. Let’s get to the first line and then head into my review of Written on the Mist.
First Line of Written on the Mist“Never in his life had he been so cold.”
My review of Written on the MistThis is a new-to-me author recommended by another reader. I do enjoy historical romance, but I’m not sure I’d ever read a story set in Alaska before. Still, Written on the Mist fell inside my typical reading genres, and I’m glad it did. Written on the Mist is an enjoyable story with a beautiful cover.
Jonas and the Amos family are wonderful characters. While there is romance, the author does a great job of balancing the action and inner workings of each member of the Amos family. She makes you want to go beyond Jonas and Evelina’s story to find out more about each of the siblings. And while having strong women, especially those with what would, for the time, be considered men’s jobs, can come across as pushing the “women are just as good” agenda for the sake of pushing an agenda, this story handles that beautifully. We see two different women, with very different personalities, in these types of roles. The author does a great job showcasing how they each approach this unexpected way of life and the struggles they may face with it.
I admit I didn’t know a lot about the history of Alaska, but this book gave insights through description, jobs, and the characters’ genealogy without the information coming across as a history lesson. And her descriptions are vivid enough to picture the area, even if you’ve never seen it for yourself.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the others in the series. For my review of Written on the Mist, I give it four stars.

Meet the Author Monday and Giveaway: Interview with Ellen E. Withers

Welcome to my interview with Ellen E. Withers on this week’s Meet the Author Monday. Stick with us throughout the interview for a great giveaway opportunity.
Now, without further ado, let’s get this interview started. Ellen, thank you for joining us today. Why don’t we start with you telling us a little about yourself.
People are blessed to have one career they love, but I’ve been blessed with two. For over 25 years, I worked as an insurance fraud investigator. When early retirement was offered, I launched into my dream second career, writing novels. Although I’d been writing short stories for years, it took a full retirement from the first job to devote the time and energy to writing mystery novels.
The rest of my endeavors include spending time with my grandsons, singing in a Sweet Adeline chorus, church activities, and travel time with friends.
Your featured book today is Show Me Skulduggery. What prompted you to write this book?
I talked my publisher into a three book contract instead of two because I wanted to tell the history of the saddlehorse training industry in my hometown that lasted over 100 years. Show Me Skuldugery takes the reader from 1920 to 1953 to highlight the successful trainers there. The contemporary portion of the book provides a glimpse of the current use of the stables as a museum and event center.
If you could spend the day with any three authors, living or dead, which ones would they be and why?
Dame Agatha Christie. She was (and still is) the best mystery author that ever lived. Imagine the techniques about mystery writing she could teach me!
James Harriet. His books about his life as a Yorkshire veterinarian overflowed with humor, humanity, and a deep love of animals. He’d be a wonderful person to know.
Michael Connelly. His Harry Bosch character is the most fascinating character I’ve ever met on the pages of a book. I’ve known and worked with various law enforcement officers and he nailed their true character and motivation with Harry.
That is a great list. You write Christian fiction. Do you have a scripture that guides or inspires you in your writing life?
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
I love that verse. Other than writing, what creative pursuits do you enjoy?
I sing in an acappella quartet and a chorus, which brings much joy to my soul. It’s a team sport based upon music and friendship. It revitalizes me.
I’ve had opportunity to hear your group, and guys sounded great. Such an enjoyable show. Now, back to writing, what resources (books, podcasts, conferences, etc) would you recommend to someone just starting their writing journey?
On Writing by Stephen King. He tells his writing journey and gives writers great tips to improve their submissions.
You Write You: Freedom for the God-designed Writer in You by our very own Heather Greer. It teaches writers to use scripture as their base and provides insight into our God-given design. Writers will learn how honoring the heart brings freedom to write as God created them to write.
I also have to recommend my book, Magic Words: How to Enchant Judges & Conjure Contest Wins. This “how-to” is for writers wishing to achieve their dreams. It helps writers learn how to win writing contests and improve their product to reach their publication goals. Although it took me over 20 years to receive a publishing contract, I hope this book helps others get there in less time.
Aww. Thanks for including me in such a great list for growing and encouraging writers. What can readers expect when they pick up one of your books?
Two intertwined mysteries, one modern, one historical, form the core of every one of my novels. My characters are not perfect, but they’re working toward God’s plan for their lives. Each book has messages of hope and grace for readers. My goal is to make them fast-paced page turners, too.
They sound like a great read. And since I’ve had the opportunity to read the first book in the series, I can attest to the fact that readers will find all of those things in your stories. What’s the biggest blessing you’ve ever received as an author?
I’ve had two of them. The first blessing was being mentored by Dusty Richards when I first studied the craft of writing. The second was meeting Linda Fulkerson, who took a chance on me and offered publishing contracts for my mystery novels.
Have you ever faced discouragement as an author? If so, how did you deal with it?
My ex-husband was not encouraging about my writing when we were married. He called my dream of being published “a pipe dream.” I took his lack of support as a challenge. His disregard made me realize if I wanted to pursue this dream, I had to give it over to God and his plan for me. I never let those words stop me from writing and learning. God provided all the encouragement and help I needed directly in my path. Once published, my ex-husband apologized for not supporting my dream.
Always remember that God has a plan for you and your writing. Let your heart and your calling to write lead the way.
I’ll thank you now on behalf of your readers for allowing God to move you beyond the negative. If someone wanted to make a movie of your book, who would you want to play the hero and heroine?
Such a fun question! My dream picks would be Emma Watson or Anna Kendrick for Liesl Schrader and Chris Pine or Chris Pratt for Kurt Hunter.
And now just a could quick and easy questions. Would you rather have to hand-write all your manuscripts or speak them into a recorder?
Speak them into a recorder. I do that now when I have an idea in the car. I’ll dictate an idea or a scene and then type it up when I’m back at my desk.
And our last one. Do you prefer physical books, eBooks, or audio books?
Physical books.
I want to thank you, Ellen, for visiting with me today. And thank you, readers, for joining me for this interview with Ellen E. Withers. Keep reading to find out more about Ellen, Show Me Skulduggery, and enter the giveaway.

Review of Where Grace Appears: First Line Friday

In this week’s First Line Friday, I’m giving my review of Where Grace Appears by Heidi Chiavaroli and published by Hope Creek Publishers. Where Grace Appears is a contemporary women’s fiction/contemporary romance. This book is part of a series, but it does not have cliffhangers. Though it is 308 pages, it isn’t a long or difficult read. I finished within a couple days, and the only reason it didn’t happen quicker was because I had to work.
Now, it’s time for our first line and my review of Where Grace Appears.
First Line Friday“The nature of secrets is that they long to be kept and long to be told all at the same time.”
Review of Where Grace AppearsWhat an amazing first line. Though the cover is beautiful and initially drew me to the book, that first line is a winner. It hooked me completely. Even without mystery concerning the secret, the author keeps the reader invested in finding out if and when the secret will be made known. And there are plenty of bumps along the way due to the keeping of the secret. As one who has grappled with the secrets of others and the power they have to change people’s behavior and thinking and put the secret keeper in a place of constantly questioning and fighting to keep hidden things hidden, I appreciate the efforts the author went through to portray the reality of living with a secret. She does a good job showing the constant inner battle.
I know the book is a modern take on Little Women, but as I have never read that book, I cannot speak to how closely the story mirrors that story. I recognize the names and the blatant (but not off-putting) references to similarities, but that’s as far as my understanding goes.
Whether closely resembling or not, the characters in Where Grace Appears are wonderfully written. I’d love to visit the town and the bed and breakfast. It sounds beautiful, and the people welcoming. While his troubles may not be as obviously life-changing as Josie’s, Tripp has struggles of his own that he must come to terms with. And Josie’s major issue is a catalyst for a deeper look at herself, her faith, and her dreams. The author has done a great job portraying the family as family, not perfect but in each other’s corner.
Whether you are a fan of Little Women or not, Heidi Chiavaroli has provided an enjoyable story that will make you want to read the rest in the series. I give this book four stars.

Capture the Moment Review: On Tour with Celebrate Lit
Book: Capture the Moment
Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release date: May 6, 2025
Kate Cunningham is facing the opportunity of a lifetime. As a zoo photographer, she’s spent years photographing animals in carefully controlled environments, but now National Geographic has dangled an irresistible prize: If Kate can snag a unique photo of a legendary bear in Grand Teton National Park, they just might publish it. It’s the kind of challenge Kate has been waiting for, and she’s eager to prove herself in the wild.
With more enthusiasm than experience, Kate soon realizes that capturing an image of this bear isn’t as simple as she hoped. Fortunately, she crosses paths with Grant Cooper, a seasonal park ranger who knows the terrain–and the bears–better than anyone. His tracking skills could be exactly what Kate needs to succeed, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes. But they’re not the only ones with an interest in the park’s most famous bear. And his motives are far from innocent.
My Capture the Moment Review:
This book surprised me in the best possible way. The cover is intriguing on its own. Just enough color in the title and in the lens of the camera to capture your attention. I’m sure the image inside the lens doesn’t do justice to the beauty of the national park that is featured in the book, but don’t worry. The author does a great job of painting the scenery in words. The beauty, the way the scene can change in a moment, the wonder of seeing such vast views of creation for the first time. All of these are presented to the reader in words that have clarity and beauty all their own. Though I’ve never visited a national park, I could see it.
Though there are a lot of animal, photography, and historical facts sprinkled throughout the book, it’s not overwhelming. Because the information was usually delivered through an excitable girl on the verge of her teenage years while still really being little more than a child (though she doesn’t think so), it didn’t ever detract from the action or the story. It worked to enhance it, and I found myself excusing it along with the adult characters at times because Maisie was just being Maisie.
Without giving spoilers, there’s a lot more happening in the story than romance. Danger, both from natural and unnatural sources, is a reality for the rangers and some of the park’s guests. Experiences for drawing closer to God through His creation happen regularly and serve as a gentle reminder for all of us to do the same (without any preachiness or pushiness). Introspection and growth are witnessed in nearly every character. And the story even offers a few unexpected surprises.
I appreciated the wonder and inspiration Kate found through her time in the national park. It reminds me of times when I’ve found inspiration as I write even at local parks or simply outside on my back porch looking at the woods and wildlife. It added to my enjoyment of the story.
The characters were all enjoyable. I’d love to meet Grant Cooper and the other park rangers. Hiking a trail with them or Kate and her camera sounds like a perfect morning. Well, maybe not Kate, as she gets herself into less desirable situations more often than I would like!
To sum up my Capture the Moment review, I give the story five stars. I’ll be reading more books in this series.

A Spark that Lit a Story
By Suzanne Woods Fisher
Capture the Moment (Revell—May 6, 2025)
Inspiration can strike in the most unexpected places—like a gift shop in Grand Teton National Park. While browsing, I struck up a conversation with a college student who had never set foot outside Alabama until her mom dropped her off for a summer job in the park. One minute, she was home in the Deep South; the next, she was surrounded by towering peaks and moose crossings. Talk about a culture shock.
That conversation lit a spark that eventually became my National Parks Summers series. I couldn’t stop thinking about the fascinating mix of people who work seasonally in national parks. You’ve got fresh-faced college kids on their first big adventure, retirees finally living their bucket-list dreams, and everyone in between. These parks aren’t just natural wonders—they’re crossroads for people from all walks of life, all chasing something unique.
In Capture the Moment, I wanted to explore what happens when people and landscapes collide. Kate Cunningham, a determined zoo photographer, swaps enclosures for the wilds of Grand Teton, chasing an elusive bear and her own sense of purpose. Along the way, Kate meets Grant Cooper, a rugged park ranger with a knack for tracking and a talent for keeping her on her toes.
National parks are more than just beautiful backdrops—they’re places where people find themselves, lose themselves, and sometimes stumble into something extraordinary.
Maybe even love.

Interview with Shaen Layle: Meet the Author Monday

Welcome to an interview with Shaen Layle on this Meet the Author Monday. Shaen is a new to me author. So, I’m looking forward to this interview as much as all of you. Shaen is a USA Today Bestselling Author, and she’s featuring her book, Borrowed Trouble. Be sure to stick around after the interview for more on her book. Plus, there is a great giveaway opportunity! Now, let’s get to know Shaen Layle.
Interview with Shaen LaylI’ve mentioned you are a new to me author, and I’m sure there are some of my readers out there who you’re new to as well. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Sure, I’d love to. I live in the Midwest, homeschool my two boys, and have been writing cozy mysteries for the past six years. Prior to writing, I was a children’s librarian for ten years, and connecting readers with good books is a passion of mine. In my spare time, I enjoy running, cooking, organizing, serving in church nursery, and learning new languages, though my favorite thing is spending time with friends and family.
I can relate to a couple of those interest. However, running is not one of them. About your writing life, do you have any writing routines or habits you follow for a productive writing day?
I joke that writing while homeschooling my two sons has been like writer bootcamp! I can write with headphones or without, at a desk or on the couch, in the morning or in the evening. If I hit my daily word count, I consider it a productive day. That said, if I could choose my ideal routine, it would be a quiet morning tucked away in an office with a big picture window, a cozy blanket, and a cup of Lady Grey tea!
Your ideal day sounds wonderful. Your real day sounds a bit like a Dr. Seuss book (I do not like them here or there or do not like them anywhere!). But as an author who began writing when my nest wasn’t empty, I can totally relate. What prompted you to write Borrowed Trouble?
I have always enjoyed romances and Victorian history. When I got the green light from my editors to write both in my new book, I was ecstatic. I spent the next few months researching Prince Albert’s Crystal Palace and coming up with a twisty mystery for my sleuth couple, honeymooners Will and Harriet Knight, to solve. One of the highest compliments I’ve received from early readers is that they had trouble pinpointing the guilty suspect—mission accomplished!
For a mystery writer, that is a great compliment. And it’s always great when an author can mix in the things they enjoy into a story. Borrowed Trouble isn’t your first book. You’ve been writing for a few years. Will you share what you believe are the most fun, most feared, and most tedious parts of being an author?
The most fun part of being an author is definitely connecting with readers. A wonderful basis for relationship is having Jesus and books in common! The most feared part is trying to override that critical internal voice that all authors face at some point. The most tedious part is definitely edits!
I have to agree with you on these answers. Sometimes new authors don’t realize just how strong that negative internal voice can be. Knowing we’ve all been there can be an encouragement. So can great recommendations on materials for writers. What resources (books, podcasts, conferences, etc.) would you recommend to someone just starting their writing journey?
I love this question because one of my favorite things is to support aspiring authors. So many wonderful resources exist out there, but here are a few of the best:
Books: Plot and Structure by James Scott Bell, the Outlining Your Novel/Structuring Your Novel books and workbooks by K.M. Weiland, and Called to Create by Jordan Raynor
Podcasts: The Christian Publishing Show with Thomas Umstattd Jr. (because he’s amazing at staying ahead of the trends in publishing and passing along helpful info), Helping Writers Become Authors with K.M. Weiland (because nobody is better at breaking down the intricacies of story structure), and the Daily Bible Podcast with Tricia Goyer and Michelle Hill (because these ladies know their Bible and they help you get filled with the Word too)
Conferences: If you’re starting out as a Christian fiction author, the best conference to attend is the annual ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) conference. The conference offers opportunities to connect with other authors, as well as make appointments to pitch your work to various agents, editors, and publishers. When you add in the amazing worship and classes/panels from top CF talent, this conference is a no-brainer! Another great event to attend would be Read Write Rendezvous, which connects Christian Fiction authors with readers. It’s a wonderful chance to build community with your prospective reader base and geek out over the written word together!
We’ve talked about your writing day and your reasons for writing. We’ve talked about your passion to encourage up and coming authors. But let’s take a minute and find out more about your books specifically. What can readers expect when they pick up one of your books?
A reader of my books can always expect a clean, faith-affirming read, an engaging, multi-layered story, and characters who deal with real-world emotions, like love, fear, doubt, and grief. However, even though I don’t shy away from complex situations in my books, I always make sure to point toward the ultimate hope and comfort that we have in Christ.
Those are my kind of books! Thank you for joining me today. I look forward to reading Borrowed Trouble. Readers, keep reading. This interview with Shaen Layle may be over, but there’s more about Shaen and her book, Borrowed Trouble, including where you can purchase your copy.

MCM: Interview with Clarisse Matthews
Welcome to today’s Main Character Monday interview with Clarisse Matthews. Clarisse is from Betty Woods’ newest release, A Troubling Suggestion. Bettys’ book is published by Scrivenings Press and releases on May 20th. Stick around after my interview with Clarrise Matthews for more information on author Betty Woods and A Troubling Suggestion.
Clarisse, to start our interview will you please share a little bit about yourself
I’m nineteen years old and live with my brother, his wife and my widowed mother on our family plantation that my brother runs. I lost my fiancé in a riding accident over a year ago. I’m not sure I’ll ever find another man like him.
You’re so young to be facing these kinds of circumstances and thoughts. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?
I’m an abolitionist. My late fiancé went to college at the North and returned home convinced slavery is wrong. I came to agree with him. A few months ago, I secretly helped my best friend elope with an abolitionist she fell in love with. I don’t voice my opinions to anyone. I wish I had the courage to do so. But I don’t know where I’d live or what I’d do if my views become known.
I can see where admitting your true feelings might be a risk for you. I feel like I may know the answer to this next question. But I’ll go ahead and ask anyway. If you could solve one world problem, which one would you solve?
I would end slavery.
The New Testament tells of Mary and Martha. Two sisters who react to a visit from Jesus in very different ways. Mary chooses to spend time with Him, while Martha chooses to take care of the physical needs. Are you more Mary or Martha?
I’m more like Mary. I don’t know how I’d endure the heartache of seeing my fiancé die without having Jesus to turn to.
I do imagine that kind of loss would be near impossible without Him. ”Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27 – Do you think living out this verse would make a difference in your life? How?
Yes. I’m making friends with a new neighbor who has also been through a lot of heartache. She’s a little younger than me. She’s now orphaned due to some tragic circumstances and living with her aunt and uncle.
Is there a verse of scripture that holds great meaning in your life?
Psalm 37:4, 5. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
I sincerely believe God can and will give me my heart’s desire if I delight in Him and commit my ways to Him. But patiently waiting for God to answer my prayers is proving difficult.
I think most of us can relate to that. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?
Turn to God no matter what happens in your life. He hasn’t stopped loving you even if you’re hurting or have been hurt. We all have hard times. God is the only one who will always see us through those difficult times.
Now, I know we’ve been fairly serious in our questions up to this point, but I’d like to ask a few just for fun. Nothing deep. If you could buy one thing, without worrying about the cost, what would you buy?
The best horse in the country.
What one hobby would you keep if you had to give up all other hobbies?
Horseback riding. I like to take a quiet trail and think without anyone else around.
Apples or Pears? Apples. I’ve never tasted a pear.
Indoors or Outside? Outside where I can think in peace.
Reading or Writing? Reading, especially poetry.
One final question. This one is about Betty Woods, your story’s creator. Using only three words will you please describe Betty Woods?
A hopeful encourager.
That is such a nice thing to say. I’m sure Betty would appreciate it. Thank you Clarisse for joining me today for this Main Character Monday interview. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, but for now, we’re going to find out a little more about your author. Readers, just because this interview with Clarisse Matthews is over, doesn’t mean we’re through. Stick around for more on Betty Woods and A Troubling Suggestion.
More About Betty WoodsBetty Woods writes heartwarming romance with a Southern accent. She’s an incurable history buff who was once mistaken for the tour guide at an historical site while answering her grandchildren’s questions. When not living in her make-believe nineteenth century world, she enjoys time with her family, especially vacations with children, grandchildren and sometimes great grands. Going on RV trips with her husband and Chihuahua to research information for books is another one of her favorite activities.

More About A Troubling SuggestionClarisse Matthews still grieves the tragic loss of her fiancé and doubts she’ll ever love anyone again. Particularly if she has to divulge the secret abolitionist ideas she keeps hidden deep inside that only her beloved knew.
After the lady Luke Williams loved spurned him and married another man, he will never risk giving his heart to another woman. Especially not to Clarisse who had to have known about her best friend’s ruse and helped the woman to conceal it from Luke. He doesn’t need a lady by his side to manage his family’s plantation or forge a path to become an attorney.
But when Luke’s cousin is deceived by a rogue, who only Luke and Clarisse know the whole truth about, they form a reluctant alliance to protect his cousin. Their feigned attraction grows into genuine love. But will the differences between them become a wall too tall to climb or can they find a way to go around?
Pre-order A Troubling Suggestion
I hope you enjoyed this Main Character Monday Interview with Clarisse Matthews. I invite you to leave any questions you may have for Clarisse or Betty Woods in the comments.

Meet the Author Monday: Interview with Shirley Gould
Meet the Author Monday: Interview with Shirley Gould
Welcome to this week’s Main Character Monday where I’m pleased to host an interview with author, Shirley Gould. Shirley, it’s great to have you here on Meet the Author Monday. Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I’ve spent my life in ministry. As the wife of a pastor, I taught Sunday School, preached sermons, served as a minister of music, a women’s leader, and was a missionary in Africa. I’ve had an amazingly blessed life. Today, I’m a widow with three daughters, three sons-in-law, and seven amazing grandchildren, all of them in love with Jesus.
Being called to Africa, telling people who had never His name about Jesus was a thrill. We saw over fifty thousand converts in our years on the field. My husband built 127 churches and 3 Bible Schools. He and I started 48 churches by doing Good News Crusades. I travel to Africa every year to continue the mission work my husband and I started. While living in Kenya, I built an orphanage for street children. We’ve saved over four hundred orphans from the streets of Kenya so far.
Our many adventures evangelizing in Kenya left an imprint on my life. I love sharing my stories when I speak at church services, mission conventions, and ladies’ conferences. I travel to Africa every year to continue the mission work my husband and I started. Now I write Christian fiction as well as non-fiction books to share my experiences with the masses.
It sounds like an amazing life of ministry. And while I think we may know, at least in part, the answer to this next question, what prompted you to write your featured book?
Writing Escape From Timbuktu was a joy for me. It was an opportunity to take my readers to West Africa and give them a glimpse of the richness they can experience visiting the ancient city of Timbuktu. Interacting with the people, walking their dusty streets, eating their food, and riding their camels transports you back in time. It changes you. My worldview was stretched. So many have never traveled the world. I offer them a trip to Africa without leaving their chaise lounge.
As one of those who have never traveled the world, I do appreciate stories that let me experience what my budget does not. Do you give readers glimpses of yourself in the books you write?
I put many of our personal stories in my manuscripts. My characters fly long flights, have jet lag, contract malaria, walk through dangerous slums, and come face to face with African wildlife. From the beaches along the Indian Ocean to the sands of the Sahara Desert, they encounter the quips and characteristics of the many tribes we worked with along the way. Driving a five-speed on the wrong side of the road, with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the vehicle, in the chaos of traffic that resembles a demolition derby was quite a challenge.
Sharing my heart for Africa through stories is a joy for me. Allowing them to see it through my eyes, hear my heart for the street children, and experience making a difference in a third-world country without the price of a plane ticket.
It sounds like quite a bit of you and your experiences have made it to the page. Let’s talk the characters you create. Do you have visuals of your characters while you write?
I prepare a photo album of pictures of my characters. I gather these pics from magazines and sales papers. And have those images to look at as I write.
I’ve taken thousands of photos of people and places all over the continent that I use as I craft my stories. Viewing the pics makes it easy to describe, as each shot takes me back to the place it was taken. Mud huts on a hillside, giraffes on an escarpment, and herds of cattle in the middle of the road give a bird’s-eye view of everyday life. I use photos and my vivid memories to keep it authentic.
Having a visual is always great for an author. Having a visual of a place you’ve seen and can go deeper than the picture is even better. Now, I know you love Africa, but if you could go anywhere to write for one month and money wasn’t an issue, where would you go?
Back to Africa! I would visit different countries, take tons of notes, and thousands of photos to ignite future novel ideas, taking my readers to another part of the continent.
That sounds like a wonderful research trip! Speaking of stories, why do you write the stories you write?
I write Christian fiction to share the gospel with readers. By showing them how the Lord works in the lives of my characters through trials and heartache, loss and times of blessing, healing broken hearts and restoring relationships, it lets them see what our Lord can do. I want them to desire a relationship with Jesus. It’s part of …seeking and saving the lost.
You writing life really does sound like an extension of your African ministry. It’s great that God has blessed you with the opportunity to merge two very different interests into one ministry to use for Him. Shirley, thank you for being on my blog today. It was fun getting to know you and your heart as a writer a little more.
Readers, stay with me, because I’m going to share a bit more about Shirley and Escape from Timbuktu.
Shirley Gould’s Bio:Shirley Gould is an inspirational speaker, an African missionary, and an author. She’s the founder of Kenya’s Kids Home for Street Children, an orphanage in Kenya. Her passion for missions drives her to share her stories and adventures to inspire others toward fulfilling the Great Commission.
Shirley has written non-fiction for thirty years and is writing Christian Fiction novels. Her debut novel, The Sahar of Zanzibar, was released in May 2021. On July 25, 2023, Escape From Timbuktu, was released. The sequel, Sunset Over Swaziland hit the shelves on March 23, 2024. On November 19, 2024, The Kissing Ball was released. Her novels are sold on Amazon.com. She lives in the Nashville, Tennessee area enjoying her seven amazing grandchildren.
Escape From Timbuktu:Elliana Bendale can’t believe her first assignment as a photojournalist is in … well, Timbuktu.
Yes, it sounds remote, but it’s an enchanting ancient city in West Africa, and if she does this right, this project could open the door to a world of exotic assignments. And even better—her translator is a ruggedly handsome Frenchman. What could be more exciting?
Beau de La Croix is not who he says he is. But posing as an interpreter enables him to gather intel about the terrorists threatening Timbuktu. No one needs to know he’s a double agent—especially not Ellie.
Unfortunately, the number one enemy in the world has figured it out, and suddenly Ellie’s photojournalist adventure includes dodging bullets, traveling down a crocodile-infested river, and literally running for her life.
What has Beau gotten her into? And if they survive, can she say goodbye to her hunky hero? Or is his life as a double agent too much excitement for a feisty Texas girl?
When Beau’s worst fears come true, what will he do to save the feisty reporter he can’t seem to shake?

Without losing her heart?
Just when Tam Rochester’s dreams of expanding her herb shop and being able to support her daughter are finally coming true, Patrick Butler arrives in town. She wasn’t counting on the single dad’s plans for a bakery right across the street or the competition it’ll bring. Tam’s not afraid to fight for her future, but going toe-to-toe with Patrick would be easier if she didn’t adore his kids—and if she could just ignore her growing feelings for the too-talented baker…

My Winning Over the Baker Review:I love stories that involve baking. I love stories that involve tea shops. With Winning Over the Baker including both, I knew I wanted to read this book by a new-to-me author. But as much as I like stories involving baking and tea shops, the story also has to be a good story with characters I can relate to or enjoy getting to know. Winning Over the Baker provided on both counts.
This story is a quick and enjoyable read. Very Hallmark in its delivery, and I say that in a positive way as I love a good Hallmark movie. It’s straightforward in the plot and you know you’re going to get that wonderful, happily ever after at the end. Though there was an unexpected twist that added a touch of drama to the enemies to more trope. Though I would say less enemies and more competition to more as the characters stood in each other’s way to achieving their livelihood goals and never really disliked each other.
Tam and Patrick are single parents with all the insecurities and parenting pitfalls that can come with that. They’re also both small business owners with overlapping businesses. While this is the avenue used to create tension in the story, it’s also where we get to see their true character as loving and giving people. Add in the kids, two of which are in those precarious junior high years, and the drama is taken up a notch, not only for the girls but for their parents as they navigate the successes and failures of their children.
The spiritual struggles and lessons are present throughout the book in an unobtrusive way even someone without a desire for an inspirational story wouldn’t be put-off by. Handled realistically and without preachiness, these glimpses into the characters’ faith and how they share that with their kids adds to the story.
With two cute shops I’d frequent, main characters I can see myself befriending, and a cast of kids as secondary characters (one being a cute toddler) I’d love to visit this town and enjoy a fresh peach hand pie and a cup of peach tea with Tam and Patrick. I give this story four stars.
