Meet the Author Monday: Interview with Terri Wangard

Terri Wangard InterviewJoin me for Meet the Author Monday and my interview with Terri Wangard. Terri is the author of No Leaves in Autumn, the second in the Untold Stories of World War II series published by Scrivenings Press. I’ll talk more about the book after the interview. First, let’s get to know Terri. Welcome Terri. Please, tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, during the Lombardi Glory Years. I wasn’t a fan of the Packers. We’d have glorious fall Sunday afternoons and nobody would come out and play. They were all watching the Pack on TV.

Storytelling came early for me. My Girl Scout badge was the Writer. I wrote little stories in a notebook. Fortunately, it doesn’t survive. I also told ghost stories at a sleepover.

During my middle school years, I was a member of the Green Bay YMCA swim team and have several trophies and ribbons boxed up in the basement. I watch swimming in the Olympics. Those swimmers would leave me in their wake.

You say fortunately, but I’m sure there are several who might like to read your early stories. I have a few of mine, and it’s always fun. Do you give readers glimpses of yourself in the books you write?

Many of my female characters have talents I wish I had. In my first book, Heidi was a seamstress. I still have my mom’s PfaffTerri Wangard interview sewing machine (older than me), but we never became friends. Book two: Jennie was an artist. My father was disappointed I never took any art classes, but I must say, I draw a fairly good stick figure. WWI book: Maren worked in a library. Yes! I have a Master of Library Science degree and often wish I’d continued in the library field. In Seashells in My Pocket, Isabel was a seashell artist. I love collecting shells and have crafted a few pieces, but not on Isabel’s scale. In my new book, Marie grows plants. I kill them. Bought a mint plant and three weeks later, it’s dead.

I’m beginning to wonder if the sewing thing isn’t a writer thing. I can’t use a sewing machine either. And I also have only moderate success with plants. Maybe someone should do a study and see if writers are naturally bad at those things! If you could go anywhere to write for one month and money wasn’t an issue, where would you go?

The Florida Gulf Coast, but I wonder if I’d accomplish much writing. I’d be walking the beach every day, hunting for seashells.

That is the downside. You have to pick a place that inspires without distracting. What resources (books, podcasts, conferences, etc) would you recommend to someone just starting their writing journey?

Attend in-person conferences and join a critique group. Writing may be done in solitude, but it’s not a solitary endeavor. You need like-minded people in your life. By the end of the first conference I attended, I was feeling discouraged. Agent/editor appointments hadn’t turned out as I hoped. During worship, the author seated in front of me turned around and gave me a hug. I cannot describe how she buoyed me.

It’s amazing what support from a fellow-author can do to shift your mindset. What’s the biggest blessing you’ve ever received as an author?

My father hadn’t approved of all the fiction I read. And then I started writing it. After reading my Lusitania book, he sent me a note saying it was a very good book, engaging with emotion and concern to keep you reading, creating the illusion of the reader actually being there. I keep that note in my copy of the book.

That sounds like a treasure to keep forever. You write fiction, but what is the last nonfiction book (Bible not included) that you’ve read?

The Ride: Paul Revere and the Night That Saved America by Kostya Kennedy. Everyone knows who Paul Revere was, but it hadn’t been that way until Longfellow wrote “Paul Revere’s Ride.” This book made him come alive for me. I don’t write Revolutionary stories, but the era is fascinating.

Do you prefer physical books, eBooks, or audio books?

My preference is physical books. They’re less breakable than ereaders, easier to thumb through, and they’re loanable. Ebooks are handy when traveling. The biggest problem is they need to be continually plugged in.

I want to thank you for being with me today. I hope you’ve had a good time. Readers, here are some ways you can connect with Terri. I know she’d love to hear from you. And don’t forget, if you have questions or comments for Terri, leave them in the comments.

The Divine Proverb of Streusel Review: First Line Friday

The Divine Proverb of Streusel reviewFirst Line Friday: The Divine Proverb of Streusel Review

Welcome to another First Line Friday. Today I’m sharing my The Divine Proverb of Streusel review. But first, the details. I devoured this book, no pun intended. Seriously, I purchased it and had it finished the next day. It is that un-put-downable, even at 324 pages. Published by Revell and written by Sara Brunsvold, who I am quickly learning I enjoy a lot.

FIRST LINE:

“The message left little reason to believe Nikki Werner still held significance in her dad’s life.”

MY THE DIVINE PROVERB OF STREUSEL REVIEW:

Complete honesty. I bought this book because of streusel. I mean, who doesn’t love streusel on top of a piece of coffee cake or a muffin? I’m a fan of baking and reading. A story that can combine both of these automatically has my attention. While the title may have intrigued me and the streusel may have prompted my purchase, the story Sara Brunsvold stirs inside the pages is what kept me reading long past my bedtime and during hours when I should have been focusing on other things.

Nikki flees to her late grandparent’s farmhouse when life crashes in on her. She needs answers, needs to understand who she is and what she wants. What she finds is a loving uncle with hurts of his own and a family cookbook/journal with wisdom from scripture and her family’s past. Driven to connect with those who’ve gone before, Nikki begins cooking the recipes.

Legacies, hurts, understanding, forgiveness, healing, and family all play central roles in this beautifully told story of one woman finding her heritage and choosing where her path should lead going forward. And like some of the included recipes, the best lessons take time and effort, and  the results aren’t always what’s expected.

The characters are wonderful and real. The town is a perfect portrayal of rural, small-town life. The problems, while they could bog down the reader, are countered with enough lightness to keep the story from being too heavy. The Divine Proverb of Streusel is a story that will give you the itch to know more about your own legacy and stay with you in the best way possible after you reach the end.

Main Character Monday: Interview with Addie Masters

Main Character Monday: Interview with Addie Masters

Main Character Monday interview with Addie MastersWelcome to another Main Character Monday! Today, I have the pleasure of hosting an interview with Addie Masters from Home Baked Bribery by Gina Holder. This is the second in the Addie Masters Mystery series. Let’s get right to my interview with Addie Masters. Welcome, Addie. Please tell us a little about yourself.

Let’s see, I’m almost thirty-years old, and I’ve lived in Rockport, Massachusetts my entire life. I still live in the farmhouse built by my great-grandparents in the early 1900s. I run a junk removal business that I inherited from my dad. White Elephant Junk Removal. On the side, I do handyman jobs around town and build DIY upcycling projects that I sell at the local farmer’s market. I love rescues and currently have Sherlock, a rottweiler, Miss Marple, a Great Dane, Nancy, a bullmastiff, Winston, a potbelly pig, and Friday, a Ragdoll cat.

Sounds like you run a zoo! Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I have no phobias. That’s not to say I don’t get scared. If a situation is frightening, like having a gun aimed at me, I’ll be afraid, but I have no specific phobias. I’m not afraid of closed in spaces, heights, snakes, mice, sharks, spiders, flying, germs, public speaking, the dark … and because I’m a Christian, I don’t fear death either.

I imagine in your line of work, not fearing mice, snakes, spiders, and things like that comes in handy. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ which stengtheneth me.

Great verse. Is there a person from the Bible that you relate to most?

Probably Martha. I have a hard time sitting still. I’m always on the move from one project to another. But, I am known for being a good listener.

Finding that balance is a good thing. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

Faithfulness. I’m loyal—like a dog.

From your earlier list, I’d say you are the expert on that! Is there one that is more challenging than the others?

That would be self-control. I tend to do things without thinking like eating too many cookies or rushing into a dangerous situation.

Ah, maybe that no fears thing coming into play. With the dangerous situations, not so much the cookies. If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

I know it’s hard to follow God’s principles for our lives, but it is so worth it. He makes it worth it.

That is a great message. Now, I’d like to have a little fun. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

To be perfectly honest, there’s no place like home. I have never wanted to go anywhere else.

If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

I’d love to be able to play a musical instrument—maybe the ukelele or the tuba. I have zero musical talents.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? Milk

Beach or Mountains? Beach

Sweet Tea or Lemonade? Sweet Tea

With only three words, how would you describe Gina Holder?

 Creative, Encouraging, and Stubborn

I want to thank Addie Masters (and Gina Holder) for this Main Character Monday interview. I always find it interesting how various characters see themselves and their stories. Now, I’d love for you to stick around and learn a bit more about our featured author, Gina Holder.

Truth Cursed Review on Tour with Celebrate Lit

Truth Cursed Review

About the Book

Book: Truth Cursed

Author: Angie Dickinson

Genre: YA Fantasy

Release date: February 18, 2025

Speaking the truth can be a dangerous thing.

Cressida Hoth is alone in the world. Orphaned and unwanted, she is inflicted with a peculiar curse by her mischievous aunts and banished to a finishing school in the secluded kingdom of Dernmont. Students train in every accomplishment suitable for young ladies: music, dancing, etiquette…and strangely, poison-making, fencing, and lock- picking.

The school is a front for a rebel spy ring, and when her training is complete, Cressida is selected to join a mission to infiltrate the kingdom’s royal court. She has been thrown unceremoniously into a world of ball gowns and espionage, but she is still under a curse, and it threatens to expose them all.

Defending her teammates and her secret, Cressida discovers that the kingdom’s buried history and the truth behind her curse run far deeper than she imagined.

My Truth Cursed Review

I want to say this story is Ella Enchanted meets Mission Impossible but that doesn’t begin to do Truth Cursed justice. While the main character, Cressida, is cursed with telling the truth and the story is set in a fictional medieval-type  kingdom, Truth Cursed is more serious than that movie came close to being. Plus, there are spies, lies, and people with hearts set on war, more like Mission Impossible. However, the intrigue and danger are portrayed more subtly than the in-your-face action movie could ever hope to be. And I say that in the best way possible. The author does a great job setting the stage and then giving the reader just the right amount of action in each chapter.

The author also does a good job of portraying the complicated relationships between teen girls, the first buds of romance, and the probable results of putting a group of teen girls in a vital yet deadly position they are no where near prepared for. I really enjoyed the relationships and growth of the characters through the book.

The setting created is given enough detail to clearly picture where the characters are and what they’re dealing with without becoming overwhelming for the reader. Looming war aside, Dernmont is a place that while completely foreign seems real and relatable.

I don’t want to say anything about the plot because spoilers would be hard to avoid. What I will say is that the author was able to keep the story moving and twisting enough to keep the reader engaged. And the contrast of a character who can’t keep from telling the truth who is fighting to find truth is beautifully done.

I give Truth Cursed four stars.

About the Author

Angie Dickinson is a lifelong lover of magical stories that point to truth, hope, and redemption. She received a B.A. in English Literature and is now a fantasy writer, living in the woods of Michigan with her husband and four children. Angie is saved by grace alone and is in awe of her Savior’s unrestrained love. She is blessed by her big, boisterous family and is fond of Earl Grey tea, reading too late at night, and taking every opportunity to share her passion for fantasy and fairy tales.

More from Angie

A few years ago, while I was pregnant with my third child and feeling an itch to write a story, a question popped into my mind. Could I write a relatable main character who is cursed with a peculiar impediment that affects every relationship and interaction? What would that look like and how challenging would it be? This was the beginning of my journey toward creating and learning to know and love Cressida, the main character of Truth Cursed.

This book became an ode to so many of my favorite things: girlhood friendships, mystery, fantasy, ballgowns, hidden weaponry (poisons! blades!!), court intrigue, an epic castle setting, sweet romance, and coming-of-age character growth that is anything but graceful. In many ways this story is old fashioned for this fast-moving publishing world, embracing an amalgam of the story types that I grew up reading and wishing to read.

As I wrote, I discovered my reader, and she was younger me. So I wrote for her, for my own future teens, and for every reader who loves to fall into a cozy, wholesome, and intriguing story. I’ve attempted to present my reader with a mirror and true hope as they unravel the mystery and adventure of Truth Cursed. I will forever be thankful to my Creator for the opportunity to share Cressida’s story.

Main Character Monday Interview with Riley Williams

Main Character Monday Interview with Riley Williams

Welcome to today’s Main Character Monday interview with Riley Williams. Riley is from Vengeance in Vienna by Sara L. Jameson. Vengeance in Vienna was first published in 2024 through Scrivenings Press. I had my first opportunity to meet Riley in Cruise to Death, Sara’s first book in the Troubled Waters series. Her story was intriguing and exciting, and I can’t wait to find out more about where life has taken her these days.

Without further ado, let’s get to the interview with Riley Williams. Riley, tell us a little about yourself.

Ever since I can remember, my twin sister Lacy and I wanted to be opera singers. As kids, we used to sing along with opera broadcasts and mimic the performers—gestures and all—on our back porch in Cuero, Texas. Bet the neighbors loved that! LOL

Unfortunately, Lacy died of childhood leukemia. Now I’m having the time of my life, fulfilling our dream, singing in European opera houses.

I bet she’d be pleased to know you’re living the dream for both of you. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

Sometimes I get a hankering for liver and onions cooked in olive oil and butter.

I can honestly say, I’ve never tried that particular dish, and I’m not sure I ever will. No offense. Now that we’ve introduced you to everyone, let’s get into some deeper questions. What is your favorite book of the Old Testament?

Wow, that’s a tough question. I LOVE the Old Testament; there’s so much to be learned through it. I find Psalms comforting during tough times. And there are loads of those when you’re a freelance creative artist, depending on God to open those professional doors for you. And with all those escapades escaping terrorists, Psalm 91 is my go-to psalm for protection. I couldn’t have survived my latest run-in with the baddies in Vienna, if I hadn’t had Psalm 91 zipping through my heart.

The fact that you have a “latest” run-in with bad guys is a bit alarming, but we’ll skip that for now. Is there a book of the Bible you have trouble getting through?

Hmm … have to say … maybe Deuteronomy?

I can understand that completely. If you could meet anyone from scripture, excluding Jesus, who would it be?

Wow! Another zinger Q. There are so MANY people I’m looking forward to meeting in heaven. Do I really have to pick just one? Elisha, Mary, Jesus’s mother, Esther, John, David … Oh, I could go on and on.

I guess you did keep it under ten so we’ll let your over abundant answer pass. Jesus had twelve disciples. Which one are you most like?

Oh, most definitely Simon Peter. His impetuous nature, rushing into situations with spiritual consequences—yep. Definitely Peter. He learned from his mistakes. I’m not so sure about me, though.

I’ve always wondered how many of us might want to be a Paul but end up being more like Peter for those very reasons. Jesus says we are to be His light in the world. What does this mean to you?

Well, as a singer in the classical-music world, I try to treat others as I’d like to be treated. With respect. Not always easy when you’re dealing with some pretty self-centered, arrogant directors and performers. And my innate sense of justice has plopped me into some very dicey situations.

If only we could all perfectly live that ideal. If you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

Trust Jesus. He will NEVER let you down. Situations may seem hopeless, but He’s right there beside you, all the way.

Great message. Now, we’re going to do some just for fun and rapid fire questions. If you could have a superpower, what one would you choose?

The only superpower I’m interested in having, is the Holy Spirit.

No better one to have. If offered the opportunity, would you choose to travel in space?

Nope. No way. I like adventure, but that one’s waaaaay out of my want-to-do list.

Dark or Milk Chocolate?

Easy-peasy. Dark chocolate. Man, I had a terrible time dealing with my craving for Belgian chocolate in Cruise to Death, and especially in Death in High Places. Even now, I can smell that heavenly scent. Taste its satiny texture melting on my tongue … Anyone salivating?

Roses or Daisies?

Definitely roses. Jacob Coulter, the love of my life, ALWAYS sends me baskets of roses after my debuts. If he doesn’t quit, I’m not sure we’ll ever save up the money to get married. But I confess, I practically swoon every time I inhale those gorgeous, sweet-smelling blossoms.

Salad or Soup?

Soup. Love to make them from scratch. Great meal on a blustery European night.

And my last question is about your author, Sara L. Jameson. Given only three words, how would you describe her?

A REAL PAIN.  Honestly? What kind of friend tosses you into horrible disasters, page after page, book after book. You’d think she wants to kill me off or something.

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen! I think even without the “latest” bad guy stuff, you’ve got a pretty interesting life to live. Thank you Riley, for being with me today.

Readers this interview with Riley Williams may be over, but there’s still more for you. Keep reading for information about how to connect with Sara L. Jameson and where you can find Vengeance in Vienna.

Main Character Monday: Interview with Dr. Harry Morrison

Main Character Monday interview with Dr. Harry MorrisonWelcome to Main Character Monday and my interview with Dr. Harry Morrison. This is a first for me (I know that’s happened a lot lately) because this is my first Main Character Interview with a picture of the character I’m interviewing. Imagine my surprise when I opened my email and found an image included with the other requested materials.

Though I’ll share more details about Dr. Morrison’s book after the interview, I’ll give you the basics now. Where’s the Quetzal? is the newest in a series from author Jen Dodrill. It is the second in the cozy mystery series published by Scrivenings Press. And if you couldn’t tell from the name, the series deals with a few bird-loving, bird-watching characters. Where’s the Quetzal? releases tomorrow, February 25, 2025.

Interview with Dr. Harry Morrison

Now, on to my interview with Dr. Harry Morrison. To kick our time together off, why don’t you tell me a little about yourself. Things the readers may like to know about you.

My Ph.D. is in wildlife with a specialty in ornithology. In other words, I study birds. Currently, I’m working with quetzals at Watercolor image of character Dr. Harry Morrisonthe Bird Care and Rescue Center in Pensacola. My favorite room is my office at the Center with its thick dark curtains and paneled walls. They make it cave-like, and I like that. People talk about how many bird objects I have in there. As if that’s a bad thing. I even have stuffed birds hung on the walls and several dangling overhead. Let me know if you’d like a tour.

I will be sure to do that if I’m ever in Pensacola. You shared some of the basics, but can you tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I love to tell people exciting things about birds, but it’s hard for me to talk to people one-on-one. Most people don’t know that.

I’m happy you have something you’re passionate about to open those doors of communication. Now, as a lot of my blog followers are into faith-based reading, I have a couple questions along those lines for you. What is your favorite book in the New Testament and why?

Well, to be honest, Peg has tried to tell me about Jesus and faith. You know Peg, right? She’s the one who started the Empty Nesters Birding Group. I have been helpful in teaching her more about quetzals. She quoted Proverbs 16:18 to me – “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” She tried to explain she had done something she shouldn’t have done, and it was the same as what I did. I didn’t really understand that. I’ve never read the New Testament, but I might give it a try.

You should. Jesus even talks about birds at different times. You might especially enjoy those passages. In the Old Testament God called a man named Gideon to lead his army. Gideon didn’t believe he could, but he trusted and did as God asked. Have you ever felt like you weren’t equipped to do what God asked you to do? What did you do?

I know I can do whatever needs to be done. I have all the education I need. But maybe that’s part of what Peg was telling me. The “haughty spirit” part. Hmm. I’ll have to think about that.

There’s a specific Old Testament verse that instructs us on the things God loves. Micah 6:8 says, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Is there one of these you find easier to accomplish? Is one harder?

I see a theme here about humility. I’ll look for a book on that and see what I can learn.

It sounds like you and Peg have had some wonderful conversations, both about birds and faith. I’m interested to find out the outcome of both from your story. I know you are passionate about your work. I can tell from just our short conversation. So, if you could leave readers with one message, what would it be?

Birds are your friends!

I’m not surprised at all by that answer. And I think it gives me a clue into your answer for the first question in our just for fun part of the interview. Though, I’ve not quite nailed down the specific answer yet. If you could have one exotic pet, what would it be?

I love the quetzals I’ve been working with. Did you know they were considered sacred, and their feathers are highly prized? Peg’s daughter, Cynthia found a feather. I’m a little jealous of that.

Okay. I should have guessed that one. But this next one, I have no idea how you’re going to respond. If you could travel through time, would you?

Absolutely not. I am a man of science. Why would I want to do that?

Sunrise or sunset? Sunset over Pensacola Bay

Chocolate or Vanilla? Hmm, strawberry?

No electricity or no plumbing? I live on a boat. I can do without either.

And my final question of the day. Many readers like a look behind the curtain, if you will. They love to know a character’s relationship with the author who wrote their story. If you, Dr. Harry Morrison, had only three words to describe Jen Dodrill, which three words would you use?

Hmm, I would say Jen Dodrill is methodical, kind, and friendly.

That’s a wonderful answer. I can tell you have a great relationship with your author. I want to thank you, Dr. Harry Morrison, for joining me today. I’d also like to thank author, Jen Dodrill, for allowing me the opportunity to speak with you. This Main Character Monday interview with Dr. Harry Morrison wouldn’t be complete without more information about Jen Dodrill and her (as of tomorrow) new book, Where’s the Quetzal?.

A Hundred Magical Reasons Review: First Line Friday

A Hundred Magical Reasons Review: First Line Friday

A Hundred Magical Reasons ReviewWelcome to this week’s First Line Friday where I’ll share my A Hundred Magical Reasons Review. First, the details. A Hundred Magical Reasons is a dual or split-time novel written by Laura DeNooyer and  released by Scrivenings Press on January 7, 2025.  This stand-alone novel took me a little longer to finish than usual, but I had a lot going on at the time, plus it is a bit longer than those I usually read.

The First Line:

“Two weeks after college graduation with no diploma to show for it, Carrie Kruisselbrink stormed from her house like a prairie gale.”

Already the reader is set up for a wonderful, Oz-worthy story. While it could have been overdone, using gale was the perfect touch. And I want to know, how does one go through college graduation without a diploma? Definitely going to keep reading.

My A Hundred Magical Reasons Review:

I’ve loved The Wizard of Oz since I was a kid, though my experience with the story was only through the movie until I finally read the first book in Mr. Baum’s series in junior high. Warm memories of watching the movie every Friday before Easter prompted my interest in reading this book. Plus, it has a beautiful cover adding to its appeal.

Not knowing much about the history of L. Frank Baum, I cannot speak to whether or not the fictional interactions he has with Charlotte in the story are true to his nature or not. The author may have used factual quotes from the author in conversations, but I do not know. What I will say is having experienced the world he created in his stories, I have no trouble believing the scenarios and conversations could have happened exactly as the author describes. And based on her own notes in the book, the author did due diligence in researching the life of Mr. Baum.

I’m drawn to books and movies that tap into the wonder of creating. I loved (though I know license was taken) the movies Finding Neverland and Saving Mr. Banks and even the wonderful episode of Doctor Who featuring Van Gogh. Each tap into the creative process of the one creating and those watching can feel the magic of it. A feeling that inspires one’s desire to live creatively. A Hundred Magical Reasons taps into that same feeling regarding the creative process of Mr. Baum.

The book is full of literary references, and for me, that’s another check in the positive column. And recipes. There are so many whimsical, story-inspired recipes in the book. The author even offers a sampling of them for those willing to click the link in the back of the book. I haven’t done it yet, but I’m not one to turn down book-inspired recipes.

While A Hundred Magical Reasons tapped into my love of the Wizard of Oz, the creative process, children’s books, and recipes, there was much more to enjoy in the story. The individual stories of Charlotte and Carrie, the paths they had taken and were on in life, were equally interesting. Watching their interactions and how their relationship in 1980 grew from using each other to friendship was enjoyable. The whimsy of Charlotte’s relationship with the Baum family in the early 1900s is both light-hearted fun and meaningful.  Both blended nicely in the end, giving the story a satisfying ending.

Each character’s faith in the story was complex. There were a couple characters whose faith was steady and true. While the characters were on a journey of self-discovery and being true to themselves, they were also defining their faith. It’s clear where Charlotte and Carrie end up in their quest for spiritual truth. I have a little less clarity with Mr. Baum’s. Though, with him being real and not simply a character, more clarity may not be available through research.

Whether you are a fan of The Wizard of Oz or simply the fan of a well-told story, you should check out A Hundred Magical Reasons. You won’t be disappointed. I give this story five stars.

More about A Hundred Magical Reasons

Most fairy tales have happy endings, but is it too late for this one? After all, Mrs. Charlotte Rose Gordon, the disgruntled town recluse, is eighty-eight and has grown weary of fighting the dragons of her past—including the desire to clear her husband’s name of a 1918 crime.

Dragons of a different kind pursue Carrie Kruisselbrink.

During 1980, the summer of her private rebellion, Carrie defies parental expectations and pursues her café dream. While waiting for funding, she takes a job with Mrs. Gordon.

As Mrs. Gordon unfolds the story of her oppressive childhood and delightful friendship with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz author, L. Frank Baum, Carrie never expects to encounter her own fears and soul-searching.

In this modern-day fairy tale that weaves between 1980 and the early 1900s, Mr. Baum’s influence impacts each woman’s personal quests on a hero’s journey neither anticipates. Can Carrie and Mrs. Gordon find common ground in battling their respective dragons?

Meet the Author Monday Interview with Helena Smrcek

Meet the Author Monday Interview with Helena SmrcekMeet the Author Monday interview with Helena Smrcek.

Welcome to today’s Meet the Author Monday interview with Helena Smrcek. Helena is one of four authors featured in the Love Blooms on Valentines novella collection that released, quite appropriately, on February 14, 2025. Helena’s novella, Million Likes, is one of my favorites of this collection. I reviewed Love Blooms on Valentines last Friday for my First Line Friday review. If you’d like to know my thoughts on the collection, you can find them here: First Line Friday Review

I first had the pleasure of meeting Helena Smrcek at a writers conference. We chatted a bit and shared about what we were working on. Her work in progress at the time was not this novella. I kept up with Helena’s writing the way most of us do, through social media. So, when I saw she was taking launch team applications for her Million Likes/Love Blooms on Valentines, I knew I wanted to take part. Her story, and the whole collection, were perfect for Valentine’s Day reading.

Now, without further ado, let’s meet Helena Smrcek. Helena tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a storyteller. Just ask my friends. Once I start, it’s hard for them to get a word in. But seriously, I love stories. Jesus told stories and we keep learning from those for millennia. I was saved in a refugee camp by missionaries. It was Christmas time, and I received not only a shoebox filled with gifts and friendships that lasted for decades, but also the gift of understanding of the greatest story ever told. I take my calling to tell stories seriously and I love what I do. My prayer is that the stories God intrusts me with will make a difference in people’s lives. It is a great privilege to have someone pick up one of the stories I have written and spend their time delving into the pages. Time is the most valuable commodity we have been given, and I do not want to waste anyone’s treasure. That is why I work really hard to get good at what I do.

I love that you seem to understand the joy and the gift of putting words on a page for someone else to enjoy and that you want those words to mean something for the reader. Also, that you let that knowledge fuel you to grow as a writer. I feel the same way. Now, every writer has their personal method for writing and way the process works for them. I, personally, use visuals to help focus me. So, I enjoy finding out if other writers do the same thing. Do you have visuals of your characters while you write?

I do, in truth, once the story download is finished in my head, it plays out like a movie and I type it out.

I like to think if we, as the authors, can clearly see that movie that our readers can too. What part of being an author is most enjoyable for you?

I love the moment I finish the story.

There is nothing like seeing the end typed on the page and knowing the story is complete. You’ve shared a little about your outlook on your writing in a previous question. But why do you write the stories you write?

They come to me, I believe it’s the Holy Spirit, the creative power of God who inspires artists, author, and creatives. That makes us different from any other creature on this planet. So, I can’t take the credit for the work I do. I believe it’s a gift. My only responsibility is to steward it.

I love that our creative God allows us to be creative as well. While it is a gift authors have been given, it isn’t always an easy path. Frustration, discouragement, and creative or mental exhaustion can create hurdles the writer must overcome to continue. I’ve found in those times, encouragement comes through my own personal cheering section. Who is your biggest cheerleader in your writing life?

Cec Murphey. It is a humbling experience to be mentored by him. He is one of the kindest, most loving people I have ever met, but he is tough, really tough.

Any cheering section is a gift, but one who pushes you to grow and improve, as you put it, a tough one, that’s a priceless gift. That kind of mentorship and encouragement show up in a person’s stories. What else can readers expect when they pick up one of your books?

A good story. And I say that with humility. I have been gifted with the ability to tell stories. The skill, and the craft—well, that is hard work, as any author will tell you. But what is really important is the connection between our storytelling and our readers. A good story touches souls, and my prayer is that God would grant me the ability to continue to do just that.

I agree. It’s a wonderful gift to write stories that impact people’s lives and faith. In creating those stories, would you rather have to hand-write all your manuscripts or speak them into a recorder?

Handwrite. I tried to record my manuscript. It doesn’t work for me. I feel speech engages a different part of my brain than when I type.

I love that answer. I can’t imagine trying to speak my books to create them, even though I know there are authors who use this method all the time. It’s great how no matter how similar we are, God still gave each of us a unique design with our own preferences on how to get things done. And those preference include not only our writing but also our reading choices. Do you prefer physical books, eBooks, or audio books?

I’m a busy person. We live on a farm; I love to garden, and you know, there is the household, cooking, and so on. Audio books are brilliant companions.

I admire anyone who can use audio books to dive into a story while doing other things. Maybe I’m wired differently, but I haven’t been able to do that. To be able to take care of the day-to-day and still enjoy a great book, have one as a “brilliant companion”, for those tasks that are sometimes less enjoyable would be great. I saw your new release earned that #1 Bestseller banner in religious short stories and anthologies. That is a wonderful blessing many authors never enjoy. I’m sure it was an exciting surprise for you too. But what’s the biggest blessing you’ve ever received as an author?

I have to go back to the day in 2001. I have met Cec Murpehy. I have attended his class, and as a new author, I was desperate for direction. He asked me what I wanted to do. I said I want to write fiction, and he invited me to send his three pages to look at. He returned them to me covered in red ink. And that is where the journey began. Not only did he coach me through those first months of my struggles to understand how to write fiction, but he also committed to pray for me every day, for one entire year. My life had changed that year so profoundly, words cannot describe it.

What a powerful blessing for you as an author. To have someone pour their time, their talent, and their prayers into your life as a writer is no small gift. And after reading your novella, Million Likes, I feel confident in saying you’re using that gift well in the creation of your stories. Thank you, Helena Smrcek, for being here with me today.

Love Blooms on Valentines Review: First Line Friday

Love Blooms on Valentines Review First Line FridayLove Blooms on Valentines Review: First Line Friday

Welcome to today’s edition of First Line Friday where I’m sharing my Love Blooms on Valentines review. Love Blooms on Valentines is a new four novella collection from Two Dogs Publishing. As it released today (Happy Valentine’s Day, by the way), this one is brand new. I was on the launch team for this collection, but as always, my reviews and opinions are given without expectation and are fully mine.

Being a novella collection, I find myself in a quandary. Do I share the first line of the first novella? The first line of each novella? I’m not sure the protocol on this one. Until I hear of a commonly accepted practice on this particular issue, I’m going with the first line of the first novella. But keep reading after my review for a blurb about each individual novella.

FIRST LINE of Be My Inspiration by Chautona Havig

“I think I’m doomed to a future of ramen noodles and boxed mac and cheese.”

Isn’t that a fun first line. Nothing speaks romance and Valentine’s like ramen and mac and cheese! Seriously, though, the next line makes it even better. And the whole first paragraph. And if you know me, you know I’m not a fan of first person fiction. So, enjoying this first paragraph so much means a little bit more.

My Love Blooms on Valentines review

I enjoyed all the stories in this collection, but my absolute favorite is Be My Inspiration by Chautona Havig. I’m not typically a fan of first person point of view, but this author’s way of writing drew me in immediately. I love her style of storytelling. And the story she tells this time is wonderful. I’m not a fan of a main character that I’m supposed to be cheering on using another one without their knowledge, but the way the author weaves this one, it works for me. And then, there’s the whole twist on the twelve days of Christmas Valentine’s Day gift giving. I laughed out loud more than once. As the recipient of a gift gone wrong (probably more than one), I get it. Gift-giving is hard, especially when you’re going for really meaningful. And these failed attempts are great. Not for the giver, of course. But for the reader, it’s perfect.

Two Wrongs to Right by Katy Lee is the next in the collection. This one has a unique premise. I’ve not read many Valentine’s Day stories involving mobsters and revenge. But it works. The author does a good job of showing the lovable side of a main character who could, because of deception, end up being a bad guy in the reader’s mind. He is conflicted, with good reason. And there’s a twist at the end that adds a redemptive arc to another character who you couldn’t be quite sure about through the rest of the story.

The third story in the collection is Be Mine, Again by Gina Conroy. Misunderstanding and heartbreak have fueled the main character’s negative outlook on love for several years. But the one who broke her heart also holds the key to successfully taking the next step in her writing career. I really enjoyed this story’s setting. And I’m a fan of any story that has cooking or baking as major part of one of the character’s lives. The author does a good job giving her characters distinct voices and personalities too.

Wrapping up this fun, Valentine’s Day novella collection is A Million Likes by Helena Smrcek. I’ve read a few stories that involve social media influencers, but I like the way this story handles the topic. The author does a great job showing the difference between what’s presented and reality, all while testing the influencers belief that what she presents is as real as reality. Those watching, or reading in this case, can’t help shaking their head along with the hero, who is a really lovable guy. The author also does a good job dealing with the idea that the heroine feels she has to hide behind the camera in her perfect online world because of scars (physical and emotional) she thinks no one can accept. There’s a good balance between the serious and the humorous in this story. In a story set around the world of fluff and all that is fake, there is a lot of sincerity and truth for the reader wrapped in a fun romance.

I found this collection an enjoyable read perfect to put you in the Valentine’s Day mood. I give it four stars.

Main Character Monday: Interview with Houdini

Main Character Monday interview with Houdini from Pets AmoreMain Character Monday: Interview with Houdini

Welcome to today’s Main Character Monday interview with Houdini from Out-of-the-Box Valentines by Amy R. Anguish. This story is one of four novellas included in the Pets Amore novella collection from Scrivenings Press. Pets Amore is four Valentine’s Day themed rom-coms in one book.

Welcome, Houdini. Usually those I interview have more than one name, interesting. Tell me a little about yourself?

I have tan hair, pink ears, and black eyes.

Again, a little unusual, but we’ll go with it. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?

I’m a hamster.

Ah, that makes a bit more sense now. I hope you’re an animal with enough world experience to answer the rest of my questions. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?

Proverbs 12:10 “The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” It says to be a good person, you have to take care of your pets.

I can see where that would be appealing to you. Is there someone from the Bible that you relate to most?

Maybe Balaam’s donkey. I’d love to be able to talk in real life. This bouncing around on the keyboard to type is hard for someone with short legs like mine.

Ha ha. I can see where that could be problematic. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?

I’m pretty gentle and patient unless you squeeze me too hard.

I bet kids love you, being gentle and all. But I can see where they might get a little too excited and not take the care they should. Is there a fruit of the spirit that is more challenging than the others?

Self-control. When I get on that wheel, I just have to run until I fall off. I can’t help it. It’s like an addiction.

I don’t think you’re alone in that. Well, maybe the wheel part. But I know a lot of people that pick up their phones and just scroll, scroll, scroll like they can’t help themselves. Maybe we all need a little more self-control. If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?

Just because hamsters are related to all the other rodents of the world doesn’t mean we’re evil. I refuse to be treated badly just because I’m a distant cousin to a rat. We’re much cuter.

I have to agree. Hamsters are super cute. I hope you are always treated well. Now, let’s have some light-hearted questions. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?

Hmm. I’ve already been to school, all over Rylan’s house, and to church (but don’t tell Rylan’s mom about that one because she doesn’t know). I guess I’d like to go to the store. Rylan says it has everything.

If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?

Well, I’m a good climber. And runner. And I’m amazing at staying up all night long. What would I want to do? Maybe to dance as well as Rylan does. Kid has some really great moves.

Dark or Milk Chocolate? I don’t think hamsters are supposed to have milk … or chocolate. How about a nice carrot? Or the end of a head of lettuce.

Beach or Mountains? Mountains. I don’t think the sand would feel good on my feet.

Sweet Tea or Lemonade? Same with above. What is it with humans needing all these choices for food?

If you had only three words, how would you describe Amy R. Anguish?  Sneaky, Funny, Sweet

Sounds like there’s a bit of a story in that description. Thank you, Houdini for joining us today. And thank you, readers, for joining me for this Main Character Monday interview with Houdini. Keep reading for more about Amy R. Anguish and Pets Amore.
