Classic Rewind: The Purpose Of Marketing
Do you sometimes get caught up on clickbait titles like, “The NEW Rules of Marketing,” or “Forget Everything You Learned About Marketing…?”
I get it. We’re all looking for any new ideas that will help us make more money. But there is also timeless wisdom, strategies, and tools that will always carry us to success. (Hint: offline marketing still works!).
I was playing in my own Wayback Machine, watching some of my older videos, when I found one from 2008. I talk about the definition and purpose of marketing. This stuff is as relevant today as ten years ago!

Why Is Monopoly a Bad Word?
I was recently interviewed for Dan Kennedy’s No B.S. Marketing Diamond Inner Circle. These are top marketers.
But Dan brought up an interesting question he felt they should hear.
I use the term “unfair advantage” in the title of my book. Dan compared it to the word “monopoly,” saying many people see those terms negatively. How did I feel about that?
My reaction was simple. Hogwash.
Look, we’ve been brainwashed to think having a “monopoly,” or an “unfair advantage” is a BAD thing. That’s hogwash.
Whether Ma Bell’s monopoly was really a bad thing is open to interpretation, but our desire to have a monopoly in the mind of our customer should be our top objective. I don’t want to have a fair fight…to be the best choice they can make.
I want to be the ONLY choice they can make. I want to be a category of one.

Do You Think Popular Science Magazine Will Survive 2 Years?
Whether you read Popular Science magazine or not, this is a story you need to study.
The publishing industry is STILL under siege. That’s no surprise. But how the different long-time players are reacting and responding to this makes for very interesting reading.
Take Popular Science magazine, for example. They’ve made some pretty big changes recently to improve circulation and ensure their future success.
But have they really? The fact is the most recent changes sound a lot like, well, changes made just two years ago.
Watch this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business episode #95 and decide for yourself. Will PopSci survive? Will it survive two more years?

5 Bad Mistakes in ONE Customer Experience
My Jeep Grand Cherokee needed service. The air conditioning stopped working, so I took it to Bud Clary Auburn Jeep in Auburn, WA.
Big mistake on my part! Turned into a major hassle…took a bunch of my and my smokin’ hot wife, Kay’s time.
And it’s STILL not fixed.
Bud Clary Auburn made FIVE bad customer service mistakes. Don’t make any of these with your customers.

The BIG Difference Between Service And Experience
I was recently interviewed by Aaron and Mayumi Muller on the Lifestyle Business Owner Show and we got into a discussion on why I don’t feel great customer service is enough to make you Uncopyable.
To be sure, there are places where great customer service can give you an advantage over competition, but in most cases, it’s temporary. Delivering great customer service is usually the choice of the supplier.
There’s a big difference between choosing to provide amazing customer service and choosing to create a customer experience that steps outside the traditional scope of service.
In this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business program, I share specific examples of both from Mattress Mack and Gallery Furniture in Houston, TX.
I’m testing a new system that delivers quizzes and assessments as lead magnets to prospects. You can have a little fun and help me out at the same time by taking a 10-question quiz. After you’ve taken it, please let me know if you had any difficulty or if there are any glitches. Contact me at stevemiller@theadventure.com. Here’s the link:

Steal This Idea From The Shanghai Kerry Hotel
I spoke in Shanghai last week and had a great trip. True, I got food poisoning and ended up in the hospital, but that’s another story.
The story I’m sharing this week is about how the hotel housekeeper went above and beyond my expectations and created a true WOW — an unexpected experience.
There is a powerful lesson here for all businesses, no matter what industry, no matter whether you sell services or products, and no matter whether you are B2B or B2C.

Episode #91: Will Facebook’s Death Hurt Your Business?
Facebook is in a world of hurt right now, and it’s not just because of the privacy issues. They’ve been losing users, participation time is way down, and the only category of growth is with those 55 and older.
This isn’t just a Facebook problem, though. It’s a social media problem and those of us who have relied on the “free” organic reach to communicate with our market place will find that spigot turned off.
Pay-to-play is the name of the game for businesses (it always was going to be that eventually) and the basic rules of marketing will once again prevail (it always was going to be that eventually).
Join me this week as I share THREE big lessons from Facebook’s decline.

Episode #90: Mattress Mack & Me
If you never heard of Mattress Mack (Jim McIngvale) down in Houston, well, you should.
Jim owns Gallery Furniture, a very large retail furniture store and has been a staple of the city, as a successful entrepreneur with wacky TV commercials and an active community philanthropist. He received national attention when he opened his stores to shelter and feed many people displaced during the recent Hurricane Harvey disaster.
Now Mack, I mean Jim, and I are connected. And there are several really great marketing lessons that can be learned.
