G.B.H and Agnostic to Headline RUDE FEST, St. Louis, MO, April 1-3

For our dear readers living in the hardcore punk hotbed of the U.S. Midwest, here is a show for the books—specifically our recent releases NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980-1990 and City Baby: Surviving in Leather, Bristles, Studs, Punk Rock, and G.B.H.

Rude Fest in St. Louis will ignite the waters of the Mississippi River on April 1-3, featuring a snot-nosed lineup that reunites the long-ago players from the fierce G.B.H / Agnostic Front baseball rivalry.
Our author Ross Lomas will headline night...

NYHC Author Tony Rettman Hosts G.R.R.!: “Green Room Radio”

NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980–1990 author Tony Rettman has begun hosting a weekly podcast, “Green Room Radio”—or G.R.R.!— where he interviews hardcore punk legends both past and present. In the first episode, Rettman welcomes Ted Leo. The two fervently discuss: Ted’s early bands like Citizen’s Arrest and Animal Crackers; Aimee Mann’s involvement in the early Boston hardcore scene; and the greatness of the final Bold seven-inch.

Future episodes will bring Keith Morris, Roger Miret, Richie Birk...

SWEDISH DEATH METAL: Grainy 1990 Grotesque Rehearsal Footage Gets the Goat

Straight out of Göteborg circa 1990, here’s some footage of Grotesque at their most…well..grotesque! Disinterred from the beyond the crypts of time, this gritty and beautifully oversaturated video flows like altar blood from a time when black and death metal were still fused like conjoined twins.

The live portions are a total wall of pain, and the rehearsal footage puts you right in the hopped-up, foul-smelling room as half-naked Tompa “Goatspell” Lindberg savages his young voice and Kristia...

Harald Oimoen on Wax: New D.R.I. Recordings Coming at Goddamn Last

MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW author, Bay Area music scene fixture, and all-around madman Harald Oimoen has hammered the bass in D.R.I. for nearly two decades now, about half the span of the band’s existence. He’ll soon have more than a few seconds of new music to show for it. The band that broke the speed record in 1983 with its 22-song Dirty Rotten 7″ EP has ever-so-slowly gotten around to bashing out new recordings. As Kurt Brecht tells the Phoenix New Times: “It’s more old school hardcore…strai...

SWEDISH DEATH METAL: New Entombed A.D. Record DEAD DAWN Out Now

above: “The Winner Has Lost” track from Dead Dawn

L.G. Petrov’s band Entombed A.D. has gotten down to business, releasing its second album in as many years. Formed from the last surviving line-up of Entombed, the Anno Domini boys seem hellbent on revitalizing death ‘n roll. Dead Dawn is released Feb. 26, and comes appropriately awash in beer, BBQ sauce, flannel, and lust for life. Now bring on the HM2 pedal!

Catch the band on tour in North America this April with countrymen Amon Amarth, and...

WE GOT POWER!: HENRY ROLLINS Performs Acid Trip Essay “Everything Was Heavy” on Comedy Central

In the second season debut of Comedy Central’s This Is Not Happening, punk author/raconteur Henry Rollins performs “Everything Was Heavy,” his contribution to the mammoth anthology WE GOT POWER!: Hardcore Punk Scenes From 1980s Southern California. The tale concerns Rollins’ arrival in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, at which point a Black Flag bandmate encourages him to take an LSD trip: “You’re an asshole. It might help.”

As Rollins writes, that opportunity soon arrived in the form of...
