Decibel Tour Underway w/ABBATH, High on Fire, Tribulation, Skeletonwitch; See You in Philly!

On the eve of the Decibel Tour 2016 launch, headliner Abbath iced the U.S. highways by releasing his slick new video for “Winterbane,” a blizzard of wolves, goblins, and corpse paint. See above! While this crazy cabal —joined by grizzled High on Fire, upstarts Tribulation, and fist-banging maniacs Skeletonwitch— winds its way across the country, we will be waiting at Union Transfer in Philadelphia on April 15 with open arms and open kegs.

As previously posted, the final night of the Decibel...

Dark Phantom: “Kirkuk’s Only Metal Band Are Defying ISIS in Iraq”

Ten years ago, the paperback edition of Sound of the Beast emerged with a special section on metal in the Muslim world. Since that time, circumstances have degraded, to say the least. From Morocco to Afghanistan, headbangers persevere against difficulties ranging from jail time to threat of death. Most histories of metal bands from this region end up with the members fleeing to Europe or the United States.

The latest issue of Huck Magazine profiles Dark Phantom, a polished Kirkuk, Iraq-based...

SWEDISH DEATH METAL: New Vanhelgd Track “Rebellion of the Iniquitous” Streaming

Sweden lately seems to be on a real roll—specifically a kanelbullar, its dark, sticky native version of a cinnamon roll. This time, Pulverised Records (in Europe) and Dark Descent Records (in North America) bring us a relatively new band, not one unearthed after years in obscurity.

Vanhelgd’s debut Cult of Lazarus arrived to much fanfare in 2008, late to even the Swedish revival scene. (Repugnant formed in 1998, by comparison.) Very quickly, Vanhelgd’s crushing and depressive style of death m...

Formed in 1988 as Beyond, Interment released several demos in the 1990s before initially calling it quits. As Daniel Ekeroth writes in Swedish Death Metal: “It’s a shame these guys never made it, because they were so incredibly good. One of the best Swedish death...
