MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW: Brian Lew Talks Early Metallica Reissues

This morning, Metallica uploadeda video of frontman James Hetfield inspecting a production model of the band’s upcomingKill ‘Em All (Deluxe Edition) box set. The entire process takes several minutes, because, once the lid is open, the 1982–1984 era artifacts just keep coming and coming.Notable to our eyes is a full-page reproduction of a page from Bruce Pavitt’s SUB POP USA book, proving once again that Metallica’s early supporters came from all corners (and reaffirming Pavitt’s golden ears).

HATRED Is the Swedish Death Metal Band of the Week

What happens when former members of legendary Swedish hardcore bands Asocial and Svart Parad form a metal band named after a Manowar song? In the opinion of Daniel Ekeroth, Hatred rose from the crusted ground of Hedemora in 1987 and became “the best thrash metal band Sweden ever produced,” recordingthree essential demos between ’87and 1990.

Departing from the inspiration ofheavier NWOBHM bands, the debut “Winds of Doom” demo wasa guiding darknessfor the rise of Sweden’s fast-arrivingdeath met...

3/30–4/7, New York: IFC Center Screens WFMU Doc “Sex & Broadcasting”

Back in 1992, when Metallica’s Black Album and Nirvana’s Nevermind were still new albums, and AxCx, Mayhem, and Eyehategod all had zero full-length releases, Bazillion Points publisher Ian Christe moved to New York and right away started doing 3AM to 6AM shows on WFMU in East Orange, NJ. Sure, the old house was stuck on the corner of a rotting (now defunct) college campus, and late-night machine gun fire was common, but that place was a cathedral of music…and every druid who hosts a show on ‘...

SWEDISH DEATH METAL: Sweden Affirms Alex Hellid’s Right to Make ENTOMBED Beer

This beer doesn’t exist. But if you want a picture of Entombed with beer, just search Google for the word “Entombed”

As Entombed A.D. crushes forward on the strengths of new album DEAD DAWN, a new twist emerges in the bitter struggle between frontman L.G. Petrov and former guitarist Alex Hellid. Apparently, the Swedish Patent and Trademark Office was too enamored with the concept of Entombed-branded beer to put any restrictions on Hellid pursuing such enterprises. The ruling might seem a litt...
