Author Interview: Rachel Bowdler

Check out Rachel Bowdler’s books!
1. Paperback, hardback, audiobook?
I’m a lover of all three but I do enjoy a nice floppy paperback that’s comfortable to hold (without breaking the spine!).
2. Pick a genre, any genre!
Fantasy.
3. What is the first book you remember reading?
The Story of Tracy Beaker by Jacqueline Wilson. My mum hated me for it and said she made me cocky, oops!
4. What book shaped your childhood most?
I’m not sure if there was eve...

Book Review: The Starlight Watchmaker (2019)

The Starlight Watchmaker by Lauren James
Hugo suddenly felt strange all over. He realised with a shock that he was happy. For the first time in ages, Hugo felt happy. It wasn’t terrible at all, talking to Dorian and getting to know him. It was actually nice.
Oh my goodness, what a gem of a find! I stumbled across the sequel story, The Deep-Sea Duke, on Scribd (what an entrancing cover, oh my gosh) and read a couple of pages before realising it was the second in the series, so I quickly...
Author Interview: Vicky Ball

1. Paperback, hardback, audiobook?
Paperback – hardback is too heavy to read in bed and I prefer to read rather than listen.
2. Pick a genre, any genre!
I love thrillers. I do read other genres but thrillers are what get me really excited. I love being surprised by the twists and being kept on the edge of my seat.
3. What is the first book you remember reading?
The first book I can actually remember is Five Go to Smugglers Top (Famous Five series). I loved the ...

Film Review: My Cousin Rachel (2017)

I love romantic costume dramas. I love, love, love, love them. North & South, Pride & Prejudice, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Far from the Madding Crowd, Kurt Seyit ve Şura, The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society – I will watch any and all sweeping epic romances. So of course I so excited when My Cousin Rachel popped up on my streaming service. I just watched The Exception, so I really wanted something cheerful. Alas, My Cousin Rachel is decidedly not cheerful. It is absolutely gorgeous...
Film Review: In Time (2011)

In Time is a retro-futuristic action movie written and directed by Andrew Niccol. One of my all time (heh) favourite science fiction films is Gattaca, but I didn’t realise it was the same director! I can’t believe I missed that the first time around. Andrew Niccol also directed The Host, which I quite enjoyed too (and it prompted me to read the book!).
In the same vein as Gattaca and The Host, In Time has a strong emphasis on science fiction and romance which to me is a perfect combinati...

Author Interview: Poppy Dale

Be sure to check out The End and the Beginning!
Paperback, hardback, audiobook?Noooo, I adore them all. I love reading paperbacks (so easy in the bath), but so far have only published an eBook. Once I’ve found a “forever home” I hope to begin collecting gorgeous hardbacks. And I’ve recently got super into audiobooks – the audiobook of Mariana Zapata’s The Wall of Winnipeg and Me is getting me THROUGH this month.
2. Pick a genre, any genre!
Literary fiction is my joy – is it a ge...

Book Review: Fear and Fury (2021)

Fear and Fury by Jamie Jackson
I can tell a hero from a non-hero. It’s in the strut.
I read a lot of superhero comics, but I haven’t read too many books with superheroes. I think the last one I read was Into The Dark: Book One of the Infinite Crossover Crisis, but I don’t know if I’ve actually read any others? But I definitely should! Especially after the fun of Jamie Jackson’s debut.
Fear and Fury is bursting with humour, wise-cracks, spunk, superheroes and villains (some more vill...

Cyberpunk Film Reviews: Blade Runner 2049 (2017) & Total Recall (2012)

Alas, I never watched the original Blade Runner growing up. I watched Star Wars and Indiana Jones and The Fugitive – and just about every other Harrison Ford movie available, but for some reason this way just slipped by me. So going into Blade Runner 2049, I had literally no context other than ‘cyberpunk’. After watching the sequel, I realised that film one is a Philip K. Dick book adaptation, which I may have known at one point but had definitely forgotten before starting? Oops. But I think...
