Wiccan Altar Setup Ideas for Beginners
A Wiccan altar is a sacred space with spiritual objects used for divination, spells, rituals, and prayers. Wiccan Altar Setup is an integral part of your meditation and connecting to deity.
According to Scott Cunningham, the left side of the altar should be considered the Goddess area; feminine or yonic symbols ( bowls, chalices, and Goddess representations and statues). The right side is designated for the God; phallic symbols (athame, wand, and God statuary and his candle). The left and right associations vary according to your personal preference, but the center area is always considered to be the working area. In the center of the altar are kept the main symbols of the Wiccan faith (pentacle).
Some Wiccans arrange their altars to represent all four elements and directions. In the North the Earth element is represented; in the East is Air, in the South is Fire, and in the West Water. When placing items on an altar or when “calling on the elements” (a practice involving inviting the elements to be a part of the circle and lend their power), a practitioner will move deosil (clockwise or sunwise) and when dismissing the elements, they will move widdershins (counter-clockwise).

Anything to do with fire has the potential to be dangerous. Having something under your candle holders for protection is essential. A metal tray may not look glamorous on an altar, but it is a necessary piece of equipment. Leaving candles or incense unattended can cause a fire, especially if there are flammable objects on the same altar. A small fire extinguisher is also a good idea.

Witches Circle of Protection – How Do You Cast It
The Witches Circle of Protection marks the perimeter of your sacred space where you will perform your candle magic. The circle acts as a portal to the realm of the deities, as a protection from evil forces. It is mostly a psychological tool to put you in the right state of mind.
Circle of Protection serves as a container for your personal energy
1. Find a safe place to cast your circle. It can be indoors or outdoors, at midnight or early in the morning. The best place is somewhere you’ll feel comforted and at ease. Where you can commune in a way you prefer, for whatever ritual or ceremony, you hope to perform. If that’s your bedroom, basement, or garage, so be it.
Make sure that the place is private and free for as long as you’ll need the ceremony. Being interrupted in the middle of a ritual is a frustrating and even dangerous experience.
2. Purify the place where you will cast your circle. First, purify your location physically by tidying up the spot and making things orderly. If you’re outdoors, clear the area of branches, leaves, and rocks. Next, cleanse the area spiritually. Meditating, use your hands (or a wand or broom) and push negative energy from the spot.
You could also try using a cleansing agent like witch hazel to cleanse the area – a couple of drops in each corner of the room and around the perimeter of the circle should be sufficient.
3. Physically determine the bounds of your circle, if you want. Do this by drawing a circle on the floor, sprinkling salt water in a circle, or by laying a cord in a circle (make sure you tie it). You may use masking tape on the floor to mark out a circle with a diameter of about seven feet. You might mark a white circle on a sheet of material, making a useful portable circle of protection.
Alternatively, if you’re in the outdoors, consider using the elements of nature to create your circle.
4. Place all the objects you will be using in your ritual inside the circle.
Make sure you will not be disturbed: aside from being uncomfortable, it can be dangerous to your psychic health. You can open the circle and close the circle at your will. Just say something like ‘I open this circle’, step out, then say ‘I close this circle’ and go on with what you wanted to do with your circle. Do not dismiss the circle, for all the energy you raised will be lost.
5. If you’re going to offer something to a spirit, remember to include that and everything you’ll need to prepare it.
Other favorite items to include in rituals include totems, black candles, crystals, knives, bells, small bowls of salt and bowls of water. Organize them, whatever they are, to form an altar. Bring a surface to set them on, like a box or crate with a small black tablecloth. The altar should face North, as should you when you’re in the circle completing your ritual.
6. Complete the circle. Place candles or other items at each cardinal direction. Do not light them yet. Some Wiccans will choose something that represents Earth in the North, Air in the East, Fire in the South, and Water in the West.
Salt, stone, or a green candle could represent Earth. Incense, broken glass, or a yellow candle could stand in for Air. Blue candle or water in any receptacle is an excellent representation of Water. A red candle does nicely for Fire.

How to Perform a Wiccan Smudging Ceremony
Smudging ceremony is used for cleansing, purifying, and blessing the area around your altar and sacred space, or for your ritual tools. If you wish, you can also smudge people, animals, or your entire home and vehicle. With a smudging ceremony we can bless just about anything.
A smudge stick contains herbs, spices, or incense, tied up in a small bundle. The smoke is brushed over and around any areas that need a purification when is lit.
Traditional herbs for smudging are rosemary, sage, sweet grass, lavender, mugwort, and wormwood. Smudges have benefits for the modern Wiccan, as natural herbs didn’t cause difficulties for people who are sensitive to fragrances.
How to Make A Smudge StickYou can buy pre-made sticks, with a variety of plants in them. Most common are sage, and combinations of things like lavender, sage, and cedar.
Make your smudge stick. Tie your herbs in a small bundle with cotton thread, so that it resembles a large, fat cigar. Light one end and allow the sweet-smelling smoke to rise.
Move the smudge stick around to allow the smoke to spread.
You should not blow, as this is believed to create an opportunity for negative energies to enter the smoke.
You can also burn the herbs loosely, but this will create an incredibly hot mixture. Take special care and use a fireproof container for your herbs. Prepare a ceramic bowl containing sand to deposit the smudge stick. Remember that herbs continue to smolder for a long time after the fire has been put out. Smudging your altar before use is an excellent way to focus your mind on the task you are about to do.
How to perform a smudging ceremony?The goal with smudging is to have smoke that purifies and cleanses.
Once a Smudge Stick is lit, use your breath, or hand to blow the flame out.
Then wave with feather or group of feathers the smoke around whatever it is you’d like to purify.
As the smoke moves around and upward to the air, imagine clearing whatever is not in your best interests. Let it go on the smoke. The pure smoke will take these energies back to the Universe and transform them into positive energy.
You can sing or pray for the cleansing that you desire.
You will want to keep a bowl of sand or earth nearby. When you are done smudging, bury the hot end entirely and make sure it is out.
Smudging ceremony and fire safety concernsAnything to do with fire has the potential to be dangerous. Since you are burning things, be sure to use a fire-safe cauldron or another device and add sand in the bottom. Remove any flammable items nearby. Altar cloth underneath, or in a dangling sleeve, can ignite from the heat.
Be aware that sparks do fall off, and can burn clothing, altar cloths, floors, etc. So use with caution. If smudging indoors, excessive smoke will set off a smoke detector.

Leave the items and walk around the altar three times, then slowly walk the path back to your home. Listen for the sound of laughter and bells and know you are blessed. Beltane is the time when faeries return from their winter rest, carefree and full of mischief and delight. On the night before Beltane, in times past, folks would place rowan branches at their windows and doors for protection. If you do not wish the faeries to visit, do the same! This is also a perfect time for night or predawn rituals to draw down power to promote fertility in body and mind.
You can easily use these words for autumn as many crops are planted that will lay underneath the snow waiting for the world to turn so make this offering in the northern realms with your southern realms friends.

Wiccan Ceremony – Ritual Bath and Magic Preparation
There is an advantage when a Wiccan Ceremony has an opening and closing routine. The very essence of any Magic ritual is repeating the same routine. It helps you to slip into Wiccan ritual consciousness more quickly, as though it were second nature.
To be capable of creating the energy you need for the successful spell, you must be in good physical condition. Watch your diet and try to stick to natural foods. Cleanliness, before working Magic, is necessary. It is a good practice to cleanse the inner body by eating and drinking only water, honey, whole wheat bread and avoid drinking alcohol or smoking for twenty-four hours before the ritual. You’ll feel great if you are in good shape.
How to do a ritual bath?Before the ceremony, as a part of your ritual, take a bath with added salts, oils, or herbs to reach a level of harmony. Use fresh, clean water and if you can, use bath salts or herbs designated for your particular ritual’s outcome. For herb baths, gather a small bunch of the herb(s), tie them in a little muslin and put it into the tub itself. While in the water, focus your thoughts on the objective of the ritual ahead.
How to use essential magic oils and bath saltsOils can be used to dress the candles, in the ritual bath, and directly on the skin. You can buy them offline or online, the variety of available oils is exceptional. You could blend two or more and develop your oils.
One word of caution: buy from the same source to avoid possible incompatibility. Use a specially made glass container if you decide to combine oils and pour them slowly and gently, swirling clockwise. Oils are very complex and need careful handling, do not shake or stir. Measure them with a separate eyedropper for each to avoid pollution. Store them in dry and dark place, away from heat and light.
You have a good choice of ready-made bath salts, but making your own is fast and easy. The main ingredients are equal parts table or sea salt, Epsom salts, and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Mix thoroughly and concentrate on the purpose of the salts and the ritual.
The manner you dress would affect the way you feel and your success in most human activities. Some people do candle burning in their everyday clothes and enjoy a reasonable degree of success. I’m confident that they would have greater success if they were more concerned with what they wore. The reason is simple: when you put on distinctive clothing, used exclusively for Magic rites, your mind is much more open to the Magic itself. Many Wiccans strip naked while performing Magic rituals. To go through the process of removing all clothes can be as emotionally energizing as putting on distinctive garments.

Wicca Candle Magic – Dressing, Inscribing, Consecrating and Blessing
Wicca Candle magic is one of the simplest forms of spell casting. Anyone with a candle can cast a spell, but instead of just hoping, you’re declaring your intent.
Cleansing & Consecrating the candles is a crucial step; it removes all the negative energies that the candle has accumulated along the way. Your candles have to be as free of psychic detritus as possible. Subside the candle in sea salt, and ask The Lord and Lady to bless it with words and phrases coming from your own heart.
How to do a candle dressing?Dress the candle with any oil you prefer or with what a particular spell asks you to use. The direction candle is covered with oil is important. Rub it in a descending motion from the top to the middle of the candle and then from the bottom to the middle when you want to bring something to you.
Rub the oil from the middle of the candle out to the ends when you want to send something away from you. Be careful not to make a back and forth motion, because this will defeat the purpose. Tap the remaining oil from your fingers onto your third eye and on your breastbone. You could say the following, or modify it for your liking:
“I cleanse and consecrate this candle in the name of the Gods. May it burn with force with the light.”
Then declare your Wicca candle magic intent or what the spell you are planning to perform is about.
Inscribing the candlesUse your Athame to inscribe your candle. Write from the top to the middle, and then from the bottom to the middle to draw something to you. Write from the middle to the ends to repel things.
Wicca Candle Magic Rituals – Consecrating and BlessingThis ritual is suitable for any candle color, as for all your tools. The aim is to consolidate all positive energies and bless the candle, presenting it as a tool in the hands of your Goddess and God and inviting their spiritual power.
Before performing this rite, take a cleansing wash with herbs and essential oils to prepare yourself for the ceremony. Meditate for over 5 minutes in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed to ground yourself. Burn your favorite incenses, such as Cinnamon Powder, Hyssop, and Bay leaf.
On the center of the altar, set your candle on a black cloth, and arrange the rest of your ritual tools around. Facing South for the assistance of the Fire energies, use your index finger to trace a pentagram above the candle. Start chanting the following:
“Maiden Goddess, energy of youth and curiosity
I ask that you concentrate this candle with your purity
Mother Goddess, energy of maturity and protection,
I ask your watchful eye upon this tool to be.
Crone Goddess, energy of age and ancient wisdom,
I ask that you guide this tool so that I may see.
Horned God, energy of strength and will,
I ask that with this tool you guide the law through me.”
Place your hand over the candle and envision the purity, wisdom, protection, and strength of the Goddess and God charging the candle, then chant the following:
“Oh, Goddess of the Moon and Magick,
And God of the Sun and Forest,
I dedicate this tool to your will and wisdom,
Let it be source of no curse, no harm and no hate
As I bless this instrument, so shall it be!”
You have now dedicated the candle to the Goddess & God, also consecrated and purified it with their energies. The candle is no longer yours, but a tool of the Gods to manifest your requests. You are allowed to employ this tool in your spellwork as long as it is done without the intent of harm, negativity, or hate. As with all spellcraft rituals, if you are not completely sure of your intent, meditate and ask for guidance from the Goddess. If you listen, she will answer.
I love this Wicca candle magic chant very much, I learned it from the Magickwyrd and I use it the same way for Consecration of all my tools.

How to Get Spiritual Power Through Meditation
As you can see, magic is more than words or objects, since these things do not contain a power of their own. The power is within you, in your mind. Tools help us focus, but always remember that you are the magic, your personal power.
The key to magic is you being able to focus your intent. Without that skill, raising all the energy in the world won’t help you with your goal. This technique takes practice, but it’s not complicated.
If you meditate or even daydream a lot, you already have some understanding of the alpha state. These are the brainwaves produced when your mind is deeply relaxed.
Visualization can be part of the alpha state as well. We call it the theta state when slowing down the brainwaves as a result in deep sleep and trance. These altered states of consciousness are where magic is created. When you work magic, your mind must be relaxed and, at the same time, focused on your goal. Your mind will be clear of everything else, and you’ll hold your visualized goal in your mind like a light.
