Shadow

Out of the corner of his eye, Declan sees it; a small, prowling black shape slinking across the floor in approach. Declan keeps his focus on the laptop screen in front of him determined not to show his awareness, just like he does with his own cat, Smudge, when he wants to practice stalking. This thing is even more skittish than Smudge is, which Declan hadn’t thought possible.

There definitely is a second cat here. There has to be. He’s lost count of how many times he’s caught a tail twit...

Raife and Dexter Are Getting Married

Raife and Dexter are one of those couples who make lonely people reach for a bucket of ice cream and watch Bridget Jones for the hundredth time. They also just happen to be getting married, in the most perfect of venues, surrounded by their closest family and friends. Life couldn’t be better for them. They have good careers, a beautiful house, and still make heart eyes at each other because they are so ridiculously, sappily in love. Doesn’t it make you sick?

They really do have it all. Ex...

Could Have Been

It wasn’t so much that he dashed her hope against the rocks,
Or let her down with a bunch of forget-me-nots,
He didn’t make promises formed of smoke and mist,
Or seal false hopes with secret kiss.
He just made her feel that she was okay
Just as she was: no grand things to say.
No changes to make, no acts to put on,
No fearing that somehow she’d get something wrong.
And the moment hope decided to rear its meek head
The truth came out. Hope once again dead.
Sometimes, it’s harder to climb out
...

A Wasted Evening

It’s time to give up.

This wasn’t meant for you, anyway, not really, wasn’t something you ever dreamed you’d get to experience. And look how right you were about that; nothing has happened between you at all. Not for all those looks, those lingering fingers that have pressed into your skin in passing, nor the whisper of a thousand unspoken words, that all of the holy sonnets would have paled in comparison to, if only you could hear them said out loud.

He doesn’t want you. Or in truth, ...

Plant

If a plant could free itself from soil shackles,
It would unpot itself, shake free from clinging dirt,
Find its balance on steady, strengthened roots,
And Ent-like, stride away, silent, alert.
But it relies on you for its source of water,
And it wilts towards you, no matter shade or sun,
And its leaves are parched, crumbling to dust,
And forgotten by you, its days are done.

Too Much

You said I worry too much.
I didn’t realise that meant I should let the world engulf me in its promises,
Then drop me at a moment’s notice.
You said I worry too much.
So I tried over and over and over again to trust,
To break down that wall that feels like an entire city built to exclude me.

You said I worry too much.
And so, I did it. I allowed myself to feel acceptance,
Only to have it snatched away and leave me feeling worthless.
You said. I worry too much.
Well. Look what a spectacular mess I’...

Smile

There’s something about him that’s not as it should be.

At first glance, he seems fine; untameable sticky-out hair, big, pale green eyes that look open and honest.

It’s the smile that doesn’t seem right. Not quite reaching the eyes, it appears as though it were a misplaced sticker over something you were never meant to see. The edges, ominous, protruding from underneath.

The steamed mirror reflects predator; eyes enticing in, smile seductive, poised to strike whenever he chooses.

Laboratory Tests

Every conversation with you is like a litmus test.
I, the wide, open beaker of liquid
And you, the paper dipped carelessly into my fears,
As I lie prone, wondering, what will happen next,

When paper finds liquid: am I blue?

Pale and insignificant? Merely neutral?

Or red, flaring and angry,

With little control over what’s ‘right’ to do?

I’d rather be a flame test.
A multitude of colours flaring up every shade and hue.
Unpredictable. But at least catching your eye.
Then, maybe, I could d...

Things I Like: Freerice

This site appeared to me one procrastinating morning while scrolling through Tumblr, by far the most interesting thing on my dash that day. If you feel the weight of the world and want to do something to help at least somewhere but are out of cash or already donating what you can, this site is a great way to give a little help – for free! So what is it?

What is Freerice?

Freerice is an ad-supported, free-to-play website that you can also download as an app for both Apple and Android. I...
