I Fold
I’m no card player, but I fold.
This game has gone on for longer than eternity.
There’s nothing in the hand that I hold.
And the illusion shimmered back into reality.
This night has drawn in far too cold
And cracks are appearing on this poker face.
Not the first time, I have been told
That this was never mine, that someone’s in my place.
I’m no card player, but I fold.
This game has lost all meaning for me.
No ace up my sleeve, no flush do I hold,
I can’t gamble on just a memory.

Anger
Rhys’ anger when Ashley walks away is for himself as much as it is for him. How many times will they almost change things between them before one of them panics, taking a turn at being the first to look away. Two years they’ve been doing this dance. Getting close enough for others to notice and that attention then keeping them apart. Rhys is tired of hurting. And wanting. And constantly questioning himself.

In a perfect universe, we would all have the courage to say the exact words we needed to say to the people that needed to hear them at exactly the right moment. There would be no doubts, and no misunderstandings, and everything would go precisely and exactly to plan.
