What to do with business cards after a conference

Ever wonder what to do with the pile of business cards you collect during a conference? Here's what I did:

1. Took a good, clear photo of each business card via a point-and-shoot or my iPhone 3GS (if you have an iPhone, you'll need something like Clarifi for good close-up shots of text).

2. Stored these card images in my Evernote app in a folder called "Business cards" with a tag called "scbwi".

3. Added a brief note to help me remember how I met the person and any relevant reminder notes.

SCBWI 2009 Notes: Who attends the conference?

SCBWI logo

I lack the time to do detailed session reports, so instead I've decided to post excerpts from my notes that I think would be of most interest. The SCBWI, by the way, is the hard-to-pronounce acronym for The Society Of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, a wonderful organization I discovered through Lee Wardlaw.

Which reminds me, I really need to renew my membership for CANSCAIP, the Canadian equivalent!

Anyway, the conference always begins with Lin Oliver telling us about the attendees. This

A Personal SCBWI Highlight: Meeting Kathleen Duey

KathleenDuey

I had a connecting flight through Calgary (with a 3 hour layover) from L.A. to Toronto yesterday, and didn't get to bed until around 2 a.m. this morning. HUGE thanks to hubby Jeff for picking me up at the airport!

I haven't had time to put together my own convention report, but the photo above represents one of my personal highlights from the SCBWI Summer Conference in L.A. this past weekend.

I've been wanting to meet Kathleen Duey ever since reading Skin Hunger and especially after getting to kno

SCBWI Conference: Friday

SCBWI 2009 Conference

Having a grand time at the annual summer conference of the Society Of Children's Book Authors and Illustrators.

Enjoyed talks by Sherman Alexie and David Wiesner, Betty Birney, Marietta Zacker, and the editor panel (Courtney Bongiolatti from Simon & Schuster, Jordan Brown from HarperCollins, Jennifer Hunt from Little, Brown and Ari Lewin from Disney Hyperion). My favourite talk so far: Sherman Alexie, author of The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which won the 2007 National Book Award. Sherman'

Get your query letter critiqued

Miss Snark's First VictimPosted in the blog of Miss Snark's First Victim:

Okay, all you whine-and-beg-Authoress-for-a-query-critique-rounders–we're going to do it! Announcing our first (and possibly last) Query Contest, featuring the kind but crusty-when-she-wants-to-be Jodi Meadows, irreplaceable Girl Friday to agent Jenny Rappaport.

That's right. Jodi's the one who sends out the sweetly worded rejection emails from Jenny's agency. I should know; I've received two of them.

The first 50 queries posted on Mon. July 27th ge

Writers' Conference Newbie Cartoons

My "Countdown" comics mainly focus on going to the Society Of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators conference in L.A. in two weeks, but I think could be appreciated by anyone new to writers' conferences.

I'm not posting all of them on Inkygirl, but feel free to browse the six I've posted so far.

B&N eReader App for the iPhone: A Review

As I mentioned in my publishing news blog on Writermarket.com this morning, B&N has launched a new e-book store as well as its own e-book reader.

Being a huge fan of both e-books and e-book readers for the iPhone, I immediately downloaded the app. I read e-books on my iPhone all the time and am constantly checking out the updated versions of e-book reader apps. Originally my favourite was Fictionwise's eReader but now I like Lexcycle's Stanza the best.

Although B&N's e-reader app for the iPhone b
