I don’t care what you call me. You can call me a...

I don’t care what you call me. You can call me a Christian, or you can call me a heathen. That’s your decision, not mine. Like your opinion about my beliefs, my connection to God is mine, and no amount of convenient labels can compromise that fact. I will never question your faith, but if you choose to see mine as misguided, that is your choice. I believe there is a universal presence in this world, and you can call it whatever the hell you want. I choose to call what I have found God, but you may wish to call it something else. It makes no difference to me what label you use, but if you’re not careful, it can hold you hostage.
If I tell you that I believe in God and that I go to church, you might label me a Christian. That’s ok with me, but as soon as you use this label, your perception of me changes into a belief that you hold about what it means to be Christian. It may have some truth, or it may be completely false. It’s mostly based on your own past experiences and no reflection on how I live my life. If I tell you I believe we are all connected through a universal mind, and I meditate every morning around 4:00 am, you might label me a spirit junkie and picture me sitting under a tree performing a two-hour meditation. I’m not sure I can even sit still for that long.
I’m not interested in your opinion of me even though my ego consistently tells me otherwise. The label you choose to put on my spiritual journey is not my concern. My only concern is continuing to strive to become the best version of myself. I cannot do that by walking in someone else’s shoes or trying to dissect the individual labels people cement into the ground along my path. It’s instinctive for human beings to be a part of a group, and I encourage you to find a group of like-minded individuals that share your values and beliefs. Just be careful how you label something that was never meant to be labeled.

The concept of heaven and hell has always made me question why...

The concept of heaven and hell has always made me question why so many people flock to church to pray to God just to make sure they are on the right side of the fence. I see so many men and women dressed in the most elegant clothes on a Sunday morning awaiting the time they can prove to God that they are worthy to walk through the gates of heaven. If their shirt is a little dirty, maybe God might question their faith and drop them to the back of the line.
Do get me wrong, I love Sundays just as much as the next guy and spend many of them at my church. I even read passages from the bible when my Reverend Calls my name, but I don’t think you can find a real relationship with God just because you put on your best suit or some fancy dress? God needs to be felt wherever you stand. I’m not trying to diminish what the church represents because I genuinely believe it has answers and beautiful people that can help God come alive. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. It may be hidden inside four walls, but if you look beyond the bells and listen with your heart, you will find a voice that has always been present.
However, if you can’t feel that voice sitting in a pew on a Sunday morning, don’t beat yourself up and think you are somehow less of a person. Don’t for a second think that someone who goes to church a couple of times a week is more worthy of God’s love than you. It is not a competition. I do recommend that you do go to church and see for yourself, but if you can’t feel God at church, don’t let that be your last stop. If anything, I believe it will give you a different perspective. You can find God anywhere if you’re looking for him, but don’t limit yourself to only one location, one hour a week. Gods everywhere if you know how to look for him.

If you were to ask me a few years ago about my concept of...

If you were to ask me a few years ago about my concept of heaven, I would remain silent. If you were to ask me about the idea of hell, I would change the subject. I would refuse to speak about both topics because I never saw the benefit of such a conversation. Why should I indulge in ideas that have no real-life meaning? What is the purpose of talking about two factious worlds that only exist in the minds of a bunch of church-going Christians? If you are a religious man, then heaven awaits you on the other side, but if you happen to take the wrong path, then all you will find is an everlasting fire from the world that lies beneath.
Listen, I have no idea what awaits me when I leave this world, but I finally understand how to see the beauty that surrounds this one. When I do find out what exists after I die, I won’t have a chance to write about that shit anyway, so I might as well get my thoughts on paper before my helicopter goes down. God did not put you on this earth to live forever, and he didn’t leave you here to figure out the meaning of life. He didn’t give you individual gifts, so you can use them after you die. God put you here to experience all the glory that this world has to offer and to design your own little piece of heaven. He even gave you unique gifts to help you grow and guide you to this place of peace and happiness.
My concept of heaven was not formulated in a pew, and I don’t drop to my knees to pray on a day that was designated to find God. I talk to God daily, and I choose to be with God and to seek happiness wherever I stand. You do not have to wait to feel the beauty of heaven or feel the fear of hell because you can experience it daily. You can feel heaven or hell the moment you rise. You have the choice which one you want to experience. These worlds exist now. Don’t wait to experience heaven when you are invited to walk through gates today. Your invitation is in your ability to choose freely.

If you don’t see God in the words you speak and the...

If you don’t see God in the words you speak and the thoughts you hold, then you are missing a big piece of the puzzle of life. I don’t claim to have all the parts to this puzzle, but I know that every day I rise is a new day with endless possibilities, and each day is a gift from God.
We might go to church to be closer to God and to feel his presence, but when the church bells become silent, does he stay seated on his imaginary throne in a land far far away, or does he walk with you? Does God exist in the words you speak and the actions you take?
The beautiful part of this question is you don’t have to decide. You only need to accept that the spirit of God exists within you, and also around you. You may not be able to turn water into wine, but I believe you can change the self-destructive talk and distorted self-image that doesn’t serve you.
The only question that remains is which words you will choose to speak and think when you find yourself behind closed doors. Through the gift of choice and the resurrection of a new day, you can reconstruct your words to build a better picture. I believe your connection to God is closer than you think because you are not separate from God; you are one.
