The Spy Who Shoved Me

Back in the “dot com” days, I was US employee #3 at a small startup. We were one of the successful few, because our founders actually built a product before starting the company.
We opened our office at a complex in Scotts Valley, CA (near Santa Cruz), with an onsite gym where there was a futsal league.
Futsal is soccer played within the boundaries of a basketball court. A special ball is used that does not bounce.
The sport fit my skill set, except for one thing. I was about 15 years older than everyone in the league.
So coming in, I don’t think the others expected much from me.
One of my first games, I made a memorable impression.
With the score tied against the best team in the league, and less than a minute left I pulled off an almost silly but miraculous goal.
With the goalie coming right at me, and a defender on either side, I pumped faked a shot with my right foot. Instead of striking the ball, I put my foot on top of it, and rolled it to my left foot.
Normally, I would then plant my right foot and shoot with my left, but there was no time to get the right foot back on the ground.
So, with my right foot still airborne I leaped with my left foot, and used my toe to flick the ball with all my might towards a tiny space I thought I could get past the oncoming goalie.
Miraculously it worked. And we won.
I turned to our captain Paolo, probably the guy I was looking to impress the most, and he gave me a ” that was crazy” eye roll and then a hard friendly shove.
He was a great player and he was impressed. Turns out he was also a spy.
As I got to know everyone in my new environment, Paolo’s story was the most interesting.
Apparently, I was a little naive about how companies work in Silicon Valley.
Paolo worked for an information security company that sold their services to other businesses. His role?
He set up fictitious businesses, in order to have his real company’s competitors demo their products for him. He learned their tech specs, what their sales pitches were, how they sold against his company and so forth.
I remember saying I didn’t realize companies actually did this.
Turns out they do.
That is why I love online entrepreneurship. Those who might be competition in the real world are most likely potential partners for you in the digital business world. There are no need for spies (as cool as that may sound).

She called me a traitor, then asked me to speak at her live event

When I first started dipping my toe in the online business world, one of the first live events I attended was Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula Live.
It is hard describe how the energy and camaraderie of an event like that can motivate you. I was soaking it all up, and loved meeting all the other like-minded people who were there.
One friend I made at that very first event (this was the spring of 2017) was a gal named Thembi. We sat next to each other the last day of the event, in the front row to the left of the stage. There were likely 1500 people in attendance.
Just before lunchtime, Jeff starting talking about his 12k per year mastermind called Launch Club. There was a special lunch for anyone who was interested in hearing more.
Thembi, having more experience with Product Launch Formula than I did, leaned over and said, “You don’t need that mastermind, just follow the course you already have.”
Well, I went to lunch and decided otherwise.
I figured if I could accelerate my learning by being in that mastermind, I could easily make that investment back sooner than by figuring it all out myself.
So I joined. When I did, they changed out my event lanyard to one that said Launch Club on it.
When I returned to my seat next to Thembi after lunch, I sat down slowly and inconspicuously.
It didn’t work.
Thembi turned to greet me, saw the lanyard, and said… “You traitor!”
She was kidding (kinda…).
A year later, we saw each other at the same event and asked me how the mastermind was. I told her it was excellent and she would be a great addition.
She joined, and fast forward another year, she was standing on stage after winning the coveted Launch Club Spokesperson Award.
And Jeff told the audience she could be the next Tony Robbins if she wants to.
Needless to say, Thembi and I have been close friends ever since.
In fact, she just invited me to speak at her live virtual event next week. Her events are pretty amazing, and she has had guests like Jeff Walker, Tony Graziosi, among many others.
That is why I love attending events (live or virtual), speaking, and connecting with others.

It was a chilly fall night, back in the day (high school glory days).
I was a mere sophomore. At that time, our high school only consisted of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Freshman attended middle school.
It was a varsity soccer game, our first of the season. It was also a night game, under the lights. The crowd was always a little larger at night games, and things always felt a level or two more important.
It turned out to be very important for me. Sophomore’s didn’t normally get to play on varsity, our team had been pretty good for a few years.
Early in the first half, the coach shouted over, “Brehm go in for Kabay.”
I always warmed up and stretched well, but thank goodness I had this time. It would be my first appearance in a varsity match.
I sprinted onto the field to take my position on the front line (probably a little too fast, revealing my eagerness and youthful exuberance).
My best friend in the stands yelled, “Let’s go Brehm!!!!” That made me proud and nervous at the same time.
Then the whistle sounded, and the rest was history. I played well, and became an integral part of the team immediately. I played every game and more often then not started each game the rest of the season.
It is a little scary to think what might have happened had I not prepared myself for that moment. There were years of practice and then the real time stretching and keeping loose right up until the coach called for me to go in.
Being ready to jump into the game was the key.

The prior month, that number was 4.2 million. In fact, between April and September of 2021, over 24 million Americans quit their jobs.
The reasons for this are being spun in all different directions. The mainstream media says it is because “the economy is so good.” It actually may be because of “new job mandates.”
Regardless, I also suspect many are realizing they can do their own thing, and are taking the chance to do it now while they have a good reason.

Getting Off The Amazon Ads Hamster Wheel

When I was younger, I wondered whether or not I was lazy.
I suppose by most people’s standards, I was.
I just didn’t like doing lots of work for little gain. Hard work for large gains? Yes. Medium to hard work, for small gains? Not usually.
When I realized at my public school I could work all out at 100% to get grades of the A and B type, but work at about 50% effort to get all Bs on my report card…
…well, you can guess what I did (to my Mother’s dismay).
So, when I figured out the long term “effort versus outcome” ratio for selling books using Amazon Ads (and other types of ads), I decided to set it and forget it.
I am not saying not to publish or not to run ads. But there are far better ways to create income from your books than royalties.
As Nick Nanton says, “You make money by a book, not by having a book.” selling
The truth is all it takes is a little simple math.
If you are selling your Kindle Book at 99¢, Amazon will give you a 35% royalty. That is 34¢ a copy. Want to make 10k a month? You need to sell 29,412 copies a month. That is before ad spending which, if you are great at it, can come in at 50% ACOS (Average Cost of Sale). That simply means you need to sell 58,824 (each month). What if my book is $2.99?
Amazon gives you 70% royalty. You still need to sell 4,785 each month for 10k before ad spend.
These are doable for some, but probably not for most. The real problem is Online Ads Cartel makes you believe you can do it, and then when you don’t you feel like you failed.
Not true. There are over 6 million books on Amazon. If you are making 10k you have accomplished something amazing. Why all the doom and gloom, Ray?
This is actually a positive once you are aware of it. Because you can still accomplish amazing things with your book, by changing your perspective. Being a successful author is not about the number on your royalty check.
Back to Nick’s quote, you make money by having a book. The book is your introduction to someone. What you do next can have an even bigger impact on them and on your bank account as well.
It is all about building an online business around your book (this can be full or part time). When you help your readers take that next step, it is a win-win.
Heck, if you are like me, you are probably wondering at this point what to do next. I know I was.
And here is the great news, you will be one of the few that takes that step to the next level. Most won’t try. They would rather keep trying to siphon a few more cents per copy.

A Counterintuitive Way to Natural Immunity

10 or so days ago I sent out an email about the Rankin / Bass classic character the Burgermeister Meisterburger and how he banned toys in his town.
I then added that there appeared to be some cities in the US and around the world that seemed to be taking the Burgermeister’s lead.
To which I received the following rant:
You make your living from the US but cannot help but try to put us down. Please delete my email from your list! **sh*l*!

It reminded me how far I have come in my business life, that I not only welcome comments like that, I like adding commentary that flushes those types out.
If pointing out that there might be pockets of tyranny in the world triggers some people, there is not much I can do.
In the end, her and I both agree, she should not be on my list.
It wasn’t always easy to ignore trolls and the “triggered.”
But now I seem to have acquired this natural immunity to them. How?
Within a day or two from that reply, I received a text from Honorée Corder that said…
Happy New Year! PS I love your emails!

If you don’t know Honorée, she is an icon in the publishing industry. She is the author of a dozen books, notably many books in The Miracle Morning series with Hal Elrod. She also has high end courses, services and is high in demand as a publishing expert.
So, to get a text on my phone from her about my emails enhances my natural immunity to the negative stuff.
I also received some great unsolicited feedback recently from Derek Doepker and Rob Kosberg. Both are my heroes. Both added fuel to my natural immunity.
It is such a great feeling to have those kind of relationships. Each of them were built by hosting virtual summits.
You can have it too. Natural immunity to the haters, trolls, and negative reviews.
